Uses Of The Five Elements In East Asia, Spencer J. Palmer Oct 1965

Uses Of The Five Elements In East Asia, Spencer J. Palmer

BYU Studies

The author suggests that the Chinese theory of Wu-hsing, or The Five Elements, combined with the Yin-Yang theory, has had as great an influence on Eastern cultures as Greco-Roman culture has had upon the West. The theory of the Five Elements-fire, earth, metal, water, and wood-has impacted everything from children's games to the days of the week to the naming of babies throughout Asia. Perhaps the greatest influence has been on politics and theories of history.

Politics And Religion On China's Mongolian Frontier, Paul V. Hyer Oct 1965

Politics And Religion On China's Mongolian Frontier, Paul V. Hyer

BYU Studies

Japanese imperialists believed that religion was an effective way to control and influence the peoples they conquered. This article traces one example: the Japanese attempt to re-establish a Mongolian Jebtsundamba Khutukhtu, a religious and temporal sovereign who would appear in subsequent incarnations. After the Soviets forbid a search for a new Jebtsundamba in 1824, the Japanese suggested the search be renewed as they moved to take control of Mongolia. This move was ultimately unsuccessful but serves as a classic example of the role of religion in the struggle for power.

The Postwar Appeal Of Communism In Malaya, Vietnam, And The Philippines, Ray Cole Hillam Oct 1965

The Postwar Appeal Of Communism In Malaya, Vietnam, And The Philippines, Ray Cole Hillam

BYU Studies

Communism seemed to offer solutions to the frustrated citizens of postwar Malay, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Setting itself up opposite Western imperialism, Communism became a vehicle for nationalism. It also provided a way for seizing power and encouraging industrialization. Those interested in Communism included students, intellectuals, and the peasant and working classes. The aspects that appealed to each group varied, but all saw Communism as a way to escape from their individual and societal problems.

Summer Soil And Air Temperatures In Four Plant Communities, Paul W. Conrad Sep 1965

Summer Soil And Air Temperatures In Four Plant Communities, Paul W. Conrad

Theses and Dissertations

Temperature, one of the most influential factors controlling the growth and distribution of plants, was measured during a three month summer period within several stands of vegetation. The stands represented four distinct plant communities: sagebrush-grass, mountain brush, aspen, and conifer. Measurements were obtained by a sucrose inversion method which gave exponential average or effective mean temperature (eT) values. Registerants, small glass vials filled with a sucrose-buffer solution, were placed in the air 10 decimeters above the ground level and in the soil 1, 5, and 10 decimeters below the ground level. The sites were carefully described with respect to plant …
