Estaunie's Naturalistic Period And Spiritual Period, Bertrand Logan Ball Jr.

BYU Studies

French novelist Edouard Estaunie, popular in his country in the 1920s, is still of interest today. His career began with highly naturalistic novels, but by the end of his life, he was writing spiritual or metaphysical works. The author shows examples of these themes in Estaunie's writings, demonstrating that Estaunie's writings do showcase a change from emphasizing determinism to individual agency.

The Expanding Gospel, Hugh W. Nibley Jan 1966

The Expanding Gospel, Hugh W. Nibley

BYU Studies

When dealing with apocryphal texts, scholars can discount doctrines and themes that appear once or twice. However, themes that run consistently through many or most of the texts should be seriously considered. One such theme is that of a council in heaven in which a plan was presented and the opposition toward that plan. This article details the presence of these themes in ancient texts among various cultures.

The Trial Of Captain Henry Wirz, 1865: An Attempt Of Rehabilitation, Heinz K. Meier, Lukas F. Burchardt

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

The paper read by Dr. A. Maissen at the New York meeting of the SAHS dealt with the interesting subject of Captain Henry Wirz . Although one of the best known Swiss participating in the Civil War, he is not listed among the subjects of the book Prominent Americans of Swiss Origin. This probably was no oversight, for he was and is a controversial figure.

Hermann Hesse And The Notion Of The Ful Entity Of Man In The Literature Of Our Century, Albert Bettex

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

In 1929, four years before Hitler came to power in Germany, C.G. Jung published an essay on "Women in Europe". In this essay the Swiss psychologist , no doubt a shrewd observer, also deals with a few general aspects of the human situation of that time. He discovers tendencies in the minds of many of his contemporaries . First "a growing disgust at one sided attitudes which do not make sense" . He was thinking, among other things, of the increclible chaos of doubtful, dogmatic philosophies of the late 1920's, many of which were offered as promises of salvation to …

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches that there are several estates through which man must pass on his way to exaltation in the celestial kingdom. These estates consist of man as: (1) a pre-mortal spirit being, a literal offspring of God; (2) a mortal being having physical as well as spiritual parents; (3) a post-mortal spirit being, his spirit having withdrawn from his physical body at death; and (4) an immortal resurected personage over which physical death has no more power. The teachings concerning these estates form a goodly portion of the gospel plan as taught by …
