Joys Of Discovery- Historical Research And Writing, Leroy R. Hafen
Joys Of Discovery- Historical Research And Writing, Leroy R. Hafen
BYU Studies
Brigham Young University history professor LeRoy Hafen lauds the merits of pursuing expertise in history, citing the thrill of discovery that historians feel when they uncover the facts. Hafen defines history as a cross between science and art—science because historians seek to find facts, art because the study of human behavior cannot always result in completely accurate discoveries. Additionally, history is an art because a historian must organize and retell the facts in an appealing way, striving for literary excellence as well as accuracy. Hafen describes the process of historical research, including making use of both primary and secondary sources …
Growing Union Power- A Subject Revisited, J. Kenneth Davies
Growing Union Power- A Subject Revisited, J. Kenneth Davies
BYU Studies
In 1966, when this article was published, special interest groups argued that labor unions were increasing in monopolistic power and that their influence should be curbed by anti-union legislation. Here the author argues that if unions were exerting too much influence, then both corporate profits and market prices would be affected, union membership would be increasing, and strike activity would be on the rise. The author concludes that the evidence does not paint a picture of unchecked growth of union power.

Reminiscences Of A Trip To Cedar Breaks, G. Homer Durham
Reminiscences Of A Trip To Cedar Breaks, G. Homer Durham
BYU Studies
Reflecting on a time when automobile and horse-drawn travel overlapped, the Arizona State University president shares in this personal essay his memories of Mormon childhood growing up in southern Utah, particularly his reminiscences of taking trips up Parowan Canyon to get out of the summer heat. He describes unsuccessful attempts to summit Brian Head Peak in a Ford touring car, the trip being interrupted by herds of sheep blocking the road, and he reflects on a camping trip made by covered wagon. He compares his awe at seeing Cedar Breaks for the first time to Brigham Young’s inspiration when he …

Model Of Electron Correlation In Solids, Everett G. Larson, Walter R. Thorson
Model Of Electron Correlation In Solids, Everett G. Larson, Walter R. Thorson
Faculty Publications
The usual Hartree-Fock model (energy-band theory) does not always give an adequate description of electronic structure in a solid, because it ignores the effects of electron correlation. It was shown first by Wigner that such a situation always develops in an electron ''gas'' at sufficiently low density; a solid structure described by ''resonance'' of Heitler-London pair bonds between electrons localized on neighboring atoms is then a good model of the system. The transition from a Bloch-type state to such a highly correlated state as a function of electron density (lattice parameter) is a problem of considerable interest for the theory of …

Twentieth Century Monuments To Mormonism, Larry C. Porter
Twentieth Century Monuments To Mormonism, Larry C. Porter
Theses and Dissertations
During the course of the Twentieth-Century, considerable emphasis had been generated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and various service organizations relative to the acquiring of and/or proper designation of historical sites leagued with the rise of "Mormonism." Perhaps the spirit behind this desire is registered in the expression of Joseph Howe:
A wise nation preserves its records, gathers up its monuments, decorates the tombs of its illustrious dead, repairs its great structures and fosters national pride and love of country by perpetual reference to the sacrifices and glories of the past.
Ecological Relationships Of The Aquatic Macroinvertebrates Of The Cascade Springs Area, Eugene Clark Devenport
Ecological Relationships Of The Aquatic Macroinvertebrates Of The Cascade Springs Area, Eugene Clark Devenport
Theses and Dissertations
The U.S. Forest service, recognizing the scenic, scientific, and educational value of the Cascade Springs area near Mount Timpanogos, has set aside and begun development of this spot for the use of the general public. As part of their preparatory work they have asked that examination be made of the flora, fauna 9 and physical features which may in part be incorporated into public informational facilities being constructed at the springs.
Small Mammal Invasion Of A Trapped-Out Habitat, Lester Dennis Flake
Small Mammal Invasion Of A Trapped-Out Habitat, Lester Dennis Flake
Theses and Dissertations
Small mammals, with their numerous adaptations, have successfully inhabited most biotic communities. Interactions arising from competition among small mammals in these communities may lead to a rather complex social organization with poorly defined boundaries which limit the movement of individuals. Important among these are territorial boundaries sometimes established by small mammals to protect all or part of their home range.
