Factors In The Acceptance And Adoption Of Family Home Evening In The Lds Church: A Study Of Planned Change, Robert Ernest Larson Jan 1967

Factors In The Acceptance And Adoption Of Family Home Evening In The Lds Church: A Study Of Planned Change, Robert Ernest Larson

Theses and Dissertations

In an effort to cope with forces which would remove the home from its place of influence, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently inaugurated the Family Home Evening Program. Emerging out of a fifty year history of efforts to institute the home evening practice, it is one of the most systematic and comprehensive efforts to date to implement change within the structure of its member families.

Such a deliberate and predetermined effort toward improving the family system constitutes what applied social scientists call "planned change." Home evening, when adopted, has many of the elements of a behavior …

The Beehive House: Its Design, Restoration And Furnishings, Judy Butler Anderson Jan 1967

The Beehive House: Its Design, Restoration And Furnishings, Judy Butler Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

This study has been an attempt to examine the design, restoration and furnishings of the Beehive House to determine the degree to which the home was accurately restored, and to learn more about the key furnishings within the home.
The answers to four questions have formed the body of the thesis:
1. What was the historical background of the Beehive House to the times of its restoration?
2. To what extent is the structural restoration authentic to the time of Brigham Young?
3. What items were originally found in the Beehive House?
4. To what extenet are the furnishings appropriate …

Geographical Characteristics Of Early Mormon Settlements, John Haws Baum Jan 1967

Geographical Characteristics Of Early Mormon Settlements, John Haws Baum

Theses and Dissertations

Considerable literature has been written about the Mormons and their settlement of the lands within the Great Basin; yet no one has produced a systematic study which analyzes the following geographical factors: What pattern of land occupancy was actually used by these early pioneers? Which physical characteristics determined the selection of a site for the Mormon village? What type of city survey pattern was instigated as towns were established along the eastern margin of the Great Basin? What was the relationship between the forts and the settlements in their lay-out patterns? As these questions were systematically analyzed new findings were …

A Comparative Osteological Study Of Two Species Of Colubridae: (Pituophis And Thamnophis), Robert E. Bullock, Wilmer W. Tanner Dec 1966

A Comparative Osteological Study Of Two Species Of Colubridae: (Pituophis And Thamnophis), Robert E. Bullock, Wilmer W. Tanner

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

The complete skeletal anatomy of Pituophis catenifer deserticola Stejneger is described in detail. The osteology of this species is compared with that of Thamnophis radix haydeni Kennicott in the following areas: atlas, axis, first thoracic, other thoracic lumbar, anterior caudal, middle caudal, and posterior caudal vertebrae, as well as the skull and hyoid apparatus.

Many structural similarities exist in these two species of colubrids. The more important structures or aspects in which similarities were observed are: (1) the natural division of the vertebral column into regions and subregions, (2) the gross morphology of the various types of vertebrae, (3) the …

Equation Of State Of Sodium Chloride, Daniel L. Decker Dec 1966

Equation Of State Of Sodium Chloride, Daniel L. Decker

Faculty Publications

Because of many requests, I wish to publish the following numerical table of results for the equation of state of NaCl as calculated in an earlier paper1 along with a few comments on various proposed equations for NaCl. Table I gives the pressure in kilobars at the corresponding values of t.a/ao and temperature in the appropriate row and column. The parameter t.a/ao is the fractional compression of the lattice parameter where the standard value ao is the appropriate lattice parameter at zero pressure and 25°C. The increments between the values given in the table were chosen such that one can …

Charles The Bold, De Lamar Jensen Oct 1966

Charles The Bold, De Lamar Jensen

BYU Studies

Brigham Young University history professor De Lamar Jensen lived in France in 1965, when this essay was written. Jensen gives a brief sketch of Charles the Bold, Duke of Burgundy, who craved a loftier title and a united empire stretching from the Mediterranean to the North Sea, encompassing France and Germany. Fearless and power hungry, Charles the Bold lacked diplomacy. He angered his European neighbors and suffered defeat at their hands. The author daringly asserts that Charles the Bold and Charles de Gaulle have much in common, including ambition, policies, and obstinacy. Jensen concludes that de Gaulle would benefit from …

Tristram Shandy And The Comedy Of Context, George P. Landow Oct 1966

Tristram Shandy And The Comedy Of Context, George P. Landow

BYU Studies

Columbia University literature professor George P. Landow uses Laurence Sterne’s 1750s series of novels, The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, to illustrate how communication takes place. Refuting the idea that language can only convey ideas between two people when both speakers agree on what a word denotes, Landow highlights the comedy—and communication—that takes place in Sterne’s novels when characters infer meaning by what words connote. Landow writes that literature “often communicates not by denotation but by the indirect definition the context of a dramatic situation provides.”
