A Comparison Of Meteorologic Measurements From Irrigated And Non-Irrigated Plots, Provo, Ut, 1970–1972, Ferron L. Andersen, Phil D. Wright, J. Carl Fox

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

A comparative study of micrometeorologic conditions on irrigated and non-irrigated pasture plots was conducted at Provo, Utah, from 1970 to 1972. Daily measurements were taken of the following: precipitation cither as rain or snow, new snowfall and total snow depth during the winter; relative humidity in a standard weather shelter; number of hours at maximum relative humidity; cloud cover each morning; potential evaporation; total wind 1 m above ground level; temperature extremes in a standard weather shelter; and temperatures both on irrigated and non-irrigated plots with sensing devices located 5 cm beneath soil surface under grass cover, at soil surface …

A Taxonomic Study Of The Western Collared Lizards, Crotaphytus Collaris And Crotaphytus Insularis, Nathan M. Smith, Wilmer W. Tanner Apr 1974

A Taxonomic Study Of The Western Collared Lizards, Crotaphytus Collaris And Crotaphytus Insularis, Nathan M. Smith, Wilmer W. Tanner

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

The heterogeneous nature of the collared lizards west of the Colorado River prompted this study. Samples from known populations of C. c. auriceps, C. c. baileyi, and C. c. fruscus were used as a base for defining the western populations. External morphology and cranial morphology were compared by cluster, canonical, and discriminant analyses.

Results of these analyses show a western complex of four populations which are distinct from the three base populations of the collaris complex. Members within the western complex are distinguishable with at least 90 percent reliability by discriminant analysis. Because of intergradation patterns seen in western Sonora, …

Macrocyclic Polyether Sulfide Syntheses, The Preparation Of Thia-Crown-3, 4, 6, And 7 Compounds, Yau-Kwong Joseph Hui Apr 1974

Macrocyclic Polyether Sulfide Syntheses, The Preparation Of Thia-Crown-3, 4, 6, And 7 Compounds, Yau-Kwong Joseph Hui

Theses and Dissertations

Macrocyclic polyether sulfides have been prepared by reacting an oligoethylene glycol dichloride with a dithiol or sodium sulfide in ethanol. The following new compounds were prepared: 1-thia-(9-crown-3), 1,4-dithia-(9-crown-3), 1,4-dithia-(12-crown-4), 1,4,7-trithia-(12-crown-4), 1-thia-(18-crown-6), I,4-dithia-(18-crown-6), 1,7-dithia-(18-crown-6), 1,4,7-trithia-(18-crown-6), 1,7-dithia-(21-crown-7), 1,4,7-trithia-(21-crown-7). Four other previously reported macrocyclic polyether sulfides were also prepared. The symmetry of the nmr spectra of these compounds give added evidence for the proposed ring structures. The following subjects were presented and discussed: studies of cyclization by-products, dependence of cyclization yield on the size of the rings, high dilution principle and its application, medium-sized rings, effect of hetero-atoms on cyclization and melting point …

The Solution Photochemistry Of Benzaldehyde In Benzene, Ethanol, And 1-Hexyne, Ronald Douglas Knudsen Apr 1974

The Solution Photochemistry Of Benzaldehyde In Benzene, Ethanol, And 1-Hexyne, Ronald Douglas Knudsen

Theses and Dissertations

The photoreactions of benzaldehyde in benzene, ethanol, and 1-hexyne have been studied. Irradiation of benzaldehyde in benzene produces benzoin (I), hydrobenzoin (II), and deoxybenzoin (III). Irradiation of benzoin (I) in this solvent results in benzaldehyde formation as well as small amounts of (II) and (III). The ethanol irradiation of benzaldehyde resulted, predominantly, in the formation of (II) with (I) formed in small amounts. The photolysis of benzaldehyde in 1-hexyne produces (I), (II), (III) cis-2-heptenophenone (VII), trans-2-heptenophenone (VIII), heptanophenone (IX), and 2-(n-butyl)- 1,4-diphenyl-1,4-butanedione (X). Mechanistic pathways for the formation of these photoproducts are discussed. Separation and characterization of cis- and trans-2- …

Light And Electron Microscopy Of Resistant And Susceptible Alfalfa Roots Infected By Meloidogyne Hapla, Bernard Al Tait Apr 1974

Light And Electron Microscopy Of Resistant And Susceptible Alfalfa Roots Infected By Meloidogyne Hapla, Bernard Al Tait

Theses and Dissertations

Resistant (65-410 and 65-393) and susceptible (breeders Lahontan) alfalfa seedlings were infected with the Northern root-knot nematode, Meloidogyne hapla. Infected roots were fixed, stained, and embedded in plastic for ultrastructural investigations. Sections of plastic embedded tissue, cut at 0.5-1.5 microns for light microscopy investigations, were stained with various histochemical stains to determine the chemical composition of the nematode-altered tissues. In the susceptible cultivar, giant cells were formed by enlargement of nematode-stimulated cells without cell wall lysis. The giant cells became multinucleate by karyonkinesis without cytokinesis. Proplastids in the giant cells became structurally altered to form tubular complexes. The resistant plants …

A Calorimetric Study Of Metal Binding In Carboxypeptidase, Carbonic Anhydrase And Concanavalin A, Gary E. Hatch Apr 1974

A Calorimetric Study Of Metal Binding In Carboxypeptidase, Carbonic Anhydrase And Concanavalin A, Gary E. Hatch

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to perfect a new calorimetric method for identifying and counting ionizable chemical groups on proteins. To do this, calorimetric and electrometric titrations were performed (using HCl and NaOH as titrant) on native carboxypeptidase, carbonic anhydrase and concanavalin A plus their apo and organic ligand bound derivatives. Readily identifiable endpoints were seen in the calorimetric titrations and general agreement was found between ΔH values obtained in this study and literature ΔH values of model compounds undergoing the same reaction. Imidazole groups were those most easily counted. Many assumptions had to be made, however, in concluding …

Nesting Ecology Of The Double-Crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax Auritus Auritus) On Utah Lake, Ronald M. Mitchell Apr 1974

Nesting Ecology Of The Double-Crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax Auritus Auritus) On Utah Lake, Ronald M. Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations

Research on the nesting of the Double-crested Cormorant (Phalacrocorax auritus auritus) was undertaken to determine the nesting ecology of the bird on Utah Lake, Utah County, and the possible effects that diking Provo Bay would have on the cormorants breeding there. In 1973, two colonies in Provo Bay were visited weekly to determine laying dates, incubation period, clutch size, and hatching dates. Another colony, located on the dike of the Geneva Steel Reservoir, was visited daily during the spring and summer of 1973. At this colony, egg-laying occurred from 13 April to 17 May. The average clutch size was 3.8, …

Pathological Changes In Tissues Collected From Kangaroo Rats At The Nevada Test Site, Michael Scott Fisher Apr 1974

Pathological Changes In Tissues Collected From Kangaroo Rats At The Nevada Test Site, Michael Scott Fisher

Theses and Dissertations

Structural aberrations induced in chromosomes by irradiation have been described and classified in great detail (Bender, 1969; Arena, 1971). According to Bender (1969), these aberrations appear after exposure to ionizing irradiation following cell division, or persist unmodified and unrecognizable in interphase cells for many years. In either case, these aberrations persist and can be seen years after radiation exposure.

Aspects Of Salt Tolerance Of Salicornia Pacifica Standl. Var. Utahensis (Tidestrom) Munz, Dennis J. Hansen Apr 1974

Aspects Of Salt Tolerance Of Salicornia Pacifica Standl. Var. Utahensis (Tidestrom) Munz, Dennis J. Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

Aspects of salt tolerance of Salicornia pacifica were investigated. Survival of this plant in a saline environment is due to many interacting factors. A soil pH of 7.5 to 8.0 +- 0.2 and a constant sub-surface soil moisture level of 25 to 35% are necessary for plant survival. A fluctuating lower soil moisture leevel and higher pH favor etablishment of Distichlis stricta. The ion content in S. pacifica remained constant despite increased moisture stress throughout the growing season due to accumulation of salts which were significantly higher in the surface soil layers than in the subsurface layers around the roots. …

Trace Metal Analysis Of Hair By Charged Particle X-Ray Fluorescence, George M. Allison Apr 1974

Trace Metal Analysis Of Hair By Charged Particle X-Ray Fluorescence, George M. Allison

Theses and Dissertations

A method for the trace element analysis of hair by charged particle X-ray fluorescence is presented. The validity of the method is shown by the analysis of NBS SRM 1577--Bovine Liver, obtained from the National Bureau of Standards. Excellent correlation is obtained between results from the analysis by the X-ray method and those certified by NBS. Hair samples are ashed by a low temperature oxidation process and analyzed by the X-ray method. The results from the analysis by the X-ray method are compared to those obtained from the analysis of the same hair samples by atomic absorption. Good correlation is …

Substrate Color Matching In The Grasshopper, Circotettix Rabula (Orthoptera: Acrididae), George W. Cox, Darla G. Cox Mar 1974

Substrate Color Matching In The Grasshopper, Circotettix Rabula (Orthoptera: Acrididae), George W. Cox, Darla G. Cox

Great Basin Naturalist

Mechanisms important in maintaining substrate color matching in the grasshopper, Circotettix rabula, were studied near Aspen, Colorado, during the summers of 1968–70. Studies concentrated on populations on gray shale and red sandstone substrates. In both areas, collections revealed appreciable numbers of mismatched phenotypes among all age groups. The possibility of developmental homochromy was examined by observation of nymphs held in rearing boxes on matching and contrasting soil colors. The behavioral selection of matching substrate colors was tested by preference experiments. While not negating the possibility of these mechanisms, results suggested that they were of minor importance. Predation experiments, using Sceloporus …

The Generic Name Of The North American Musk Turtles, Hobart M. Smith, Kenneth R. Larsen Mar 1974

The Generic Name Of The North American Musk Turtles, Hobart M. Smith, Kenneth R. Larsen

Great Basin Naturalist

Although several recent workers have used the name Sternothaerus for the North American musk turtles, the rules of priority render Sternotherus the correct name for them. The generic type fixation by Stejneger of S. odoratus is accepted.

Studies On The Tolerance Of Aquatic Insects To Low Oxygen Concentrations, Arden R. Gaufin, Robert Clubb, Robert Newell Mar 1974

Studies On The Tolerance Of Aquatic Insects To Low Oxygen Concentrations, Arden R. Gaufin, Robert Clubb, Robert Newell

Great Basin Naturalist

Acute, short-term (96-hour) tests were conducted to determine the relative sensitivity of low oxygen concentrations to 20 species of aquatic insects. In addition, the longer-term effects of low oxygen levels on the survival, molting, growth, and emergence of 21 species were studied. This paper encompasses work conducted at the University of Montana Biological Station from 1968 to 1970 and at the University of Utah from 1966 to 1972.

An evaluation of the average minimum dissolved-oxygen requirements of the different groups of aquatic insects tested indicates that the mayflies are the most sensitive, that the stoneflies are next, and that the …
