Life Cycle And Incidence Of Diplostomum Spathaceum Rudolphi (1819) (Trematoda: Diplostomatidae) In Utah, James R. Palmieri, Richard A. Heckmann, R. Scott Evans
Life Cycle And Incidence Of Diplostomum Spathaceum Rudolphi (1819) (Trematoda: Diplostomatidae) In Utah, James R. Palmieri, Richard A. Heckmann, R. Scott Evans
Great Basin Naturalist
Diplostomum spathaceum (Trematoda: Diplostomatidae) causes a disease known as diplostomatosis (eye fluke disease) and has been found to be widespread throughout the fish of Utah. Totals of 756 snails (5 species), 893 fish (21 species) and 6 species of birds were examined for the presence of larval and adult D. spathaceum from 17 collecting sites throughout Utah. Pathologic effects such as blindness, subacute inflammatory reactions, cornea perforation, and ruptured globe due to diplostomatosis upon the fish host are listed. Fish host and parasite infection data of D. spathaceum for the major lakes of Utah are given.
The Effects Of Leech Behavior On Penetration And Localization Of Apatemon Gracilis (Trematoda: Strigeidae) Cercariae And Metacercariae, James R. Palmieri, Hugo A. James
The Effects Of Leech Behavior On Penetration And Localization Of Apatemon Gracilis (Trematoda: Strigeidae) Cercariae And Metacercariae, James R. Palmieri, Hugo A. James
Great Basin Naturalist
Metacercariae of Apatemon gracilis (Rudolphi 1819) (Trematoda: Strigeidae) were found to encyst primarily in the posterior half of their leech hosts (Helobdella stagnalis, Placobdella parasitica, Erpobdella punctata) in numbers of from 1 to 13 larvae per cyst. Presumably the posterior localization of these larvae in their leech hosts is determined by the host's behavior in response to cercarial penetration. It is possible also that leeches may become infected by ingesting snail tissues containing mature cercariae.

Peat Depth Of Sierra Nevada Fens, And Profile Changes From 1958 To 1972 In Mason Fen, Don C. Erman
Peat Depth Of Sierra Nevada Fens, And Profile Changes From 1958 To 1972 In Mason Fen, Don C. Erman
Great Basin Naturalist
Peat cores along transects of seven minerotrophic peatlands (fens) in the Sagehen Creek basin were made in 1972. The areas were all shallow, sloping peatlands from 67 to 206 cm in maximum depth. Cores from one fen contained layers of charcoal and clay that suggested fire followed by fen regeneration. Profiles from Mason Fen suggested that the peat mass was moving downslope, creating splits and ridges with surface pools at right angles to the slope. Comparison of a profile made in 1958 with 1972 showed further evidence of downslope mass movement and expansion of the surface area.
Implications Of Symbiotic Nitrogen Fixation By Desert Plants, R. B. Farnsworth, E. M. Romney, A. Wallace
Implications Of Symbiotic Nitrogen Fixation By Desert Plants, R. B. Farnsworth, E. M. Romney, A. Wallace
Great Basin Naturalist
There is little information available regarding symbiotic nitrogen fixation by desert plants, particularly with respect to the group of nodulated non-legumes. Early investigations of nodules on non-legumes were contemporary with early studies of the Leguminoseae; however, comparatively little is known even now regarding the extent to which non-legumes fix nitrogen.
A review of literature regarding changes in concepts of nitrogen fixation by legumes and nodulated non-legumes is presented.
Evidence from recent studies on nodulated non-legumes, including those in desert areas, indicates some 31 species of 21 genera in 12 new or previously unrecognized plant families show nodulation with implications of …
Hard And Soft Nucleophilic Substitution Patterns In Amino-Methylsulfonylazines, Calvin Wilson Mccausland
Hard And Soft Nucleophilic Substitution Patterns In Amino-Methylsulfonylazines, Calvin Wilson Mccausland
Theses and Dissertations
The selectivity observed with 2,4,7-triamino-6-methylsulfonyl-pteridine when reacted with "hard" aliphatic amines and "soft" aryl-thiols resulting in amine exchange at the 2-, 4-, and 7-positions and displacement of the 6-methylsulfonyl moiety, respectively, was further investigated in other ring systems. The substrates tested were disubstituted with amino- and methylsulfonyl- moieties, and included the benzene, pyridine, pyrazine, quinoxaline, quinazoline and pteridine ring systems. The methylsulfonyl moiety is preferentially displaced by both thiols and amines with quinoxaline and quinazoline substrates, and is more reactive towards displacement by thiol than amine nucleophiles. Amine exchange occurs with the quinoxaline substrate subsequent to displacement of the methylsulfonyl …

Phytoseiid Predators Of Mite Pests In Utah Apple Orchards, Vichitra Mongkolprasith
Theses and Dissertations
Recent efforts to integrate certain Phytoseiid predators in pest (mite) management programs for apples have been somewhat successful and economical in many fruit growing areas. Convenient descriptions and reviews of the literature for species which have been collected from the state are provided to stimulate further work with Utah Phytoseiids. Seven species of Amblyseius and five Typhlodromus are described and notes provided concerning their respective geographic distributions and biologies.
Tissue Chromium Levels :|Bautopsy Study In Diabetic And Non-Diabetic American (Pima) Indians, Leslie O. Hansen
Tissue Chromium Levels :|Bautopsy Study In Diabetic And Non-Diabetic American (Pima) Indians, Leslie O. Hansen
Theses and Dissertations
Tissues (liver, spleen, pancreas, and aorta) and hair taken at autopsy from diabetic and non-diabetic southwestern Indians (mainly Pima) were analyzed for chromium (Cr) using flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry. The Cr levels in both tissues and hair from diabetic subjects were consistently lower than in those from non-diabetic individuals. There were so few individuals in each group that it was not possible to accurately correlate a given tissue either with any other tissues or hair.

Van Der Waals Interactions Of Ii-State Linear Molecules With Atoms. C6 For No(X 2Π) Interactions, Glen C. Nielson, Gregory A. Parker, Russell T. Pack
Faculty Publications
Formulas are derived for the van der Waals Cn coefficients for the interaction of a diatomic molecule in a II electronic state with an S-state atom. Two triatomic states arise from the degenerate IIstate. The average of the two energies has the usual Legendre polynomial (PL) angular dependence, but the difference in energies of the two states is shown to have associated Legendre polynomial (PML with M=2) angular dependence. Procedures for including spin orbit coupling are included, and the extension to interactions of Delta- and Phi-state molecules is discussed. Values of the spherical part of the C6 coefficients for the …
The Comparative Toxicity Of Developmental Inhibitors And Organophosphates On Mosquitoes, Richard L. Orr
The Comparative Toxicity Of Developmental Inhibitors And Organophosphates On Mosquitoes, Richard L. Orr
Theses and Dissertations
Four developmental inhibitors (Altosid, Altozar, ZR-619 and ZR-777) and two organophosphates (Parathion and Abate) were tested on Aedes aegypti under laboratory conditions. When applied to fourth-instar larvae, the organophosphates were more toxic than the developmental inhibitors. Concentrations required for standard kills (LC50 and LC95) were lower for Altosid and ZR-619 than for Altozar and ZR-777. Field applications of Altosid SR-10 controlled Culiseta inornata for two weeks at 4 ounces per acre. With the exception of Dolichopodidae, most non-target aquatic organisms showed little response to Altosid SR-10. Although the developmental inhibitors Altosid and ZR-619 require higher concentrations for mosquito control, they …

It is argued that conflicting approximations in a recent paper [J. R. Stallcop, J. Chem. Phys. 61, 5085 (1974)] render the resulting theory invalid.

Theses and Dissertations
This thesis traces the history of the restoration and development of the Aaronic Priesthood and its offices of priest, teacher, and deacon, from 1829 to the middle 1840s in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The major areas of emphasis include the organizational structure of the Aaronic Priesthood, the responsibilities assigned to priests, teachers, and deacons, and the relationship of the functions of the Aaronic Priesthood which are first given in Section 13 of the Doctrine and Covenants, namely the ministering of angels, the preparatory gospel, and the offering of the sons of Levi. Also included is the …
The Japanese Translation Of The Book Of Mormon: A Study In The Theory And Practice Of Translation, Jiro Numano
The Japanese Translation Of The Book Of Mormon: A Study In The Theory And Practice Of Translation, Jiro Numano
Theses and Dissertations
English and Japanese are very different from each other in tems of their structures. And consequently no one would call the present translation of the Japanese Book of Mormon a low rank-bound translation.
However, a substantial amount of grammatical categories of English such as number, redundant subject for Japanese, pronominal expression, and the passive voice which is not used so often in Japanese as in English, are introduced in the translation. The improper placement of subject, verb and object also serves as a cause of foreign tones. Thus the present translation has more factors of Formal-Equivalence translation than those of …
The Southern States Mission And The Administration Of Ben E. Rich, 1898-1908: Including A Statistical Study Of Church Growth In The Southeastern United States During The Twentieth Century, Ted S. Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
Although The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sent numerous missionaries to labor in the South prior to the Civil War, a formal mission organization did not exist until the etsablishment of the Southern States Mission of the Church in 1875 at Shady Grove, Tennessee. This thesis details the significant events in the mission during the eventful years of the Ben E. Rich administration, 1898 to 1908. Following his courageous example, hundreds of missionaries taught the message of the Restored Gospel to the people of the South during a renewed period of persecution and hatred as the acceptance of …
The Pioneer Chinese Of Utah, Don C. Conley
The Pioneer Chinese Of Utah, Don C. Conley
Theses and Dissertations
With the single exception of a survey of Chinese history in the Western United States written by the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, there exists no other documented history of the Chinese experience in Utah.
This paper offers an overview of Pioneer Chinese life in Utah territory from the Chinese railroad laborers in Box Elder County to the Chinatown settlement in Silver Reef mining camp in Washington County. Old Chinese customs, individual Chinese personalities and communities are rediscovered through the use of census data, newspaper editorials, and oral interviews. Chinese religion is analyzed from available data about pioneer Chinese funeral …
Missionary Activities And Church Organizations In Pennsylvania, 1830-1840, V. Alan Curtis
Missionary Activities And Church Organizations In Pennsylvania, 1830-1840, V. Alan Curtis
Theses and Dissertations
During most of the 1830's, the Church was headquartered at Kirtland, Ohio. The thrust of her missionary effort toward the populous east came from that center. The impact of that proselyting work on Ohio's neighboring state, Pennsylvania, is the subject of this thesis. This study is concerned with the background and history of the missionary work in Pennsylvania as a part of the greater history of the Church in the 1830's. This thesis is also concerned with the results of that missionary work. Pennsylvania provided missionaries to teach in New York, New England, Canada and elsewhere and laid the foundation …

The purpose of this study is to present the origin and development of the San Juan Mission in southeastern Utah in its work with Indian people, principally since 1940. One of the responsibilities of the San Juan Mission was to teach the Indian people the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. It is also the purpose of this study to show what has been accomplished in regard to the original call and also determine what remains to be completed. The history of the San Juan Mission has been indexed under the following chapter headings: Introduction to San Juan and the Call …
A History Of Female Missionary Activity In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, 1830-1898, Calvin S. Kunz
A History Of Female Missionary Activity In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, 1830-1898, Calvin S. Kunz
Theses and Dissertations
Latter-day Saint female missionary activities informally began in the early 1830's, remaining numerically unconstant until 1879, when a significant increase began. Between 1830 and 1898 over two hundred women had been involved in missionary work, laboring mostly in California, New York, Hawaii and England.
Before 1865, Latter-day Saint women did not have any official missionary status. After 1865, Church officials began the practice of setting them apart. Finally, in 1898 women were "certified" as missionaries which placed them on an equal status with their male counterparts.
Some lady missionaries performed household chores, taught school, preached sermons and presided over female …
