Introduction Remarks, Heinz K. Meier May 1977

Introduction Remarks, Heinz K. Meier

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

1) The core of the current issue of the SAHS Newsletter consists of a long article on Abraham Blumer, Swiss Reformed clergyman in the Lehigh Valley during the period of the American Revolution. Professor William T. Parsons, the author, writes "Blumer and his contemporary Swiss and German church leaders" are "universally overlooked" even in specialized words on the independence era. The article thus opens a window into a little known aspect of Swiss emigration to this country. Blumer was a man of many qualities with a wide variety of interests. The reader wishes he would learn even more about him …

Book Review: Die Eigenart Der Zurcher Auswanderer Nach Amerika 1734-1744, Walter D. Kamphoefner May 1977

Book Review: Die Eigenart Der Zurcher Auswanderer Nach Amerika 1734-1744, Walter D. Kamphoefner

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

This book, a Swiss doctoral dissertation which owes much to the guidance of Prof. Leo Schelbert, is a model case-study of emigration in a restricted area and time-period. Taking the Canton Zurich during the decade of heaviest emigration in the 18th century, it attempts to reconstruct the social, economic, and religious milieu from which the emigrants came, and seeks to determine the characteristics which set them apart from those who remained behind.

"Der Glarner": Abraham Blumer Of Zion Reformed Church, Allentown, Professor William T. Parsons

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Up in the Lechadaal Pennsylvania Dutch Country, people tend to credit origins and you will often hear them say of virtues and of foibles, "he came by it honestly." They mean that children inherit characteristics, or that a new generation often mirrors the traits of its predecessor. So it was, surely, with Abraham Blumer, Ministre du Sancte Evangile, heir to family traditions of leadership in local church, business and civic affairs.

Quo Vadis?, Alice H. Finckh May 1977

Quo Vadis?, Alice H. Finckh

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Is the time approaching when members of the SAHS might wish to modify its charter of its purpose? The question has arisen in conversations and at meetings, and the next two or three years might provide an opportunity to make a decision. Shall we continue to concentrate on Swiss-American history and related fields, or shall we try to broaden our purpose (and possibly change our name) to include other disciplines, and other activities beyond the publication of three Newsletters a year, occasional grants-in-aid, and regional and annual meetings?

Sex-Linked Mental Retardation Without Physical Stigmata (Martin-Bell Or Renpenning Type) : A Genetic And Psychometric Approach, Craig L. Hanis Apr 1977

Sex-Linked Mental Retardation Without Physical Stigmata (Martin-Bell Or Renpenning Type) : A Genetic And Psychometric Approach, Craig L. Hanis

Theses and Dissertations

Screening the Utah State Training School (a resident institution for the mentally retarded) for kindreds having at least two institutionalized sibs generated 54 sib groups. Of these, 20-male only sibships had histories compatible with sex-linked mental retardation without physical stigmata (Martin-Bell or Renpenning type). Affected males had no characteristic physical stigmata (an appreciable number did have speech problems and/or seizure disorders) and exhibited IQs ranging from 5 to 74 with a mean of 34.2. Obligate carrier females had a mean IQ score of 91.9 (range, 79 to 106), which is as would be predicted due to random X-inactivation. Carrier females …

Atomic Simulation Of The Al2 (111) (110) Edge Dislocation In Alpha-Iron, Brent L. Adams, P. C. Gehlen, J. P. Hirth, R. G. Hoagland Apr 1977

Atomic Simulation Of The Al2 (111) (110) Edge Dislocation In Alpha-Iron, Brent L. Adams, P. C. Gehlen, J. P. Hirth, R. G. Hoagland

Faculty Publications

The authors are pleased to acknowledge: the support of this research by the National Science Foundation under Grant DMR 74-21243 and by the provision of computer time by The Ohio State University and by Battelle Columbus Laboratories; and helpful comments on the manuscript by V Vitek. Computer simulation is used to obtain the plane strain and non-plane strain equilibrium core structures for the a/2 <111> {110} edge dislocation in alpha-iron as modelled by the Johnson potential. The methods of the integral formulation of anisotropic linear eleasticity theory are employed in the analysis. Flexible core boundary methods reveal that positive volume expansions …

Environmental Interaction In Summer Algal Communities Of Utah Lake, Mark C. Whiting Apr 1977

Environmental Interaction In Summer Algal Communities Of Utah Lake, Mark C. Whiting

Theses and Dissertations

Utah Lake is a shallow eutrophic lake located in central Utah. It is characterized by high nutrient and silt loads and by large algal blooms in late summer and early fall. Phytoplankton samples and environmental data were taken from June through August 1974. Phytoplankton species were identified and then quantified in a Palmer counting cell. Environmental continuum theory was employed to describe algal succession and regression analysis was used to discover interactions between algal communities and the environment. Phytoplankton communities in June were characterized by high species diversity. As the lake environment became stressed in late summer due to higher …

Accumulation And Metabolism Of Triphenyltin Hydroxide (Du-Ter) In Channel Catfish, Hal B. Jenson Apr 1977

Accumulation And Metabolism Of Triphenyltin Hydroxide (Du-Ter) In Channel Catfish, Hal B. Jenson

Theses and Dissertations

The fate of ring-14C labeled triphenyltin hydroxide was studied in a model ecosystem consisting of soiI, water, and channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). Two initial levels of triphenyltin hydroxide concentration in soiI, 1.0 and 0.010 ppm, were compared. The soiI showed a gradual loss of 20 to 30% of the total 14C residues. Only about 33% of the remaining soil residues could be extracted and almost all of these were triphenyltin hydroxide. Total residues in the water were very low. Catfish muscle and viscera accumulated 14C residues continually throughout the treatment portion of the experiment. When the catfish were transferred to …

Canopy Influence As A Factor In Determining Understory Community Composition, Richard B. Wilcox Apr 1977

Canopy Influence As A Factor In Determining Understory Community Composition, Richard B. Wilcox

Theses and Dissertations

Four tree species (i.e. Pinus ponderosa, Juiperus scopulorum, Quercus Gambelii, and Ceanothus velutinus were chosen for this study. Ten individuals of each species were selected and their associated understory communities and adjacent non-understory communities sampled. Data taken included biotic and abiotic parameters. The data was subjected to similarity index analysis, cluster analysis, discriminant analysis, and x^2 analysis. The results were confirmed by all tests. The forest canopy was shown to directly influence the understory community. The understory community is a shrub-grass dominated type while the non-understory community is an annual-forb dominated type. The different tree species were also shown to …

The Dependence Of The Apparent Pk Of Ion Exchange Celluloses Of Ionic Strength, Paul Cyril Gillespie Apr 1977

The Dependence Of The Apparent Pk Of Ion Exchange Celluloses Of Ionic Strength, Paul Cyril Gillespie

Theses and Dissertations

Diethylaminoethyl cellulose was titrated with acid and base in various concentrations of NaCl. The pK values were determined from titration curves using a graphical technique. Two titratable groups were observed from the acid titration curve, a major and a minor group. The minor group, which represented 20% of the acid titration, was barely detectable in the base titration curve and had a salt-independent pK of 6.0. The pK of the major group was strongly salt-dependent and was approximately a linear function of log N NaCl. An equilibrium shift caused by the counter ion may explain the salt dependence. Hydrogen bonding …
