Book Review: Zwingli, Heinz K. Meier
Book Review: Zwingli, Heinz K. Meier
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
G. R. Potter, Emeritus Professor of Medieval History, University of Sheffield, has written what is probably the best one-volume biography of the great Swiss humanist and reformer Huldrych Zwingli (1484-1531) in any language. This achievement was possible because Potter, at the height of a long and distinguished career, immersed himself in the mass of available materials and came up with a product that is scholarly and at the same time eminently readable. The scholarship is reflected in the numerous footnotes on every page as well as in the bibliography. Potter is at home in the libraries and archives of Zurich …

Book Review: The United States In Norwegian History, Max Silberschmidt Zurich
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
This book is significant for a number of reasons. It is not generally known that after Ireland Norway "is the European nation which has sent the largest percentage of its population to America." The number of emigrants is not impression as such because Norway is, in population today four million, a very small country. "Norwegian America," however, is a factor in Norway's history, of more weight and of greater importance than Swiss-America is Swiss history, for the simple reason that the United States was the land of emigration for Norwegians. Naturally enough, because it is, transatlantically speaking, its direct neighbor!

Gertrude M. Eckhardt, a member of our society, has produced a handsome volume on a small New Jersey community which her grandfather helped found back in the late 1840s. The community was then called New Germany and consisted of a few doxed German immigrants. They founded their Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1853 and went about earning a living out of the abundant forest lands of their neighborhood. Later in the century a small group of Italian immigrants joined the original group, bringing with them new flavors and new skills. The borough never grew into a big settlement but stayed a …

Guest Workers As An "Automatic Stabilizer" Of Cyclical Unemployment In Switzerland, W. E. Kuhn
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
In the early 1970's, in excess of 5 percent of the total population of France, Germany, Britain, and Switzerland were immigrants, The extreme case was Switzerland, where one person in six had come from a foreign country. Between them, the four mentioned countries had nearly 10 million immigrants; this accounts for more than nine-tenths of the West European total of nearly 11 million. This estimate may be on the low side; Feurer indicates that in 1972 some 8 million guest workers lived in Europe who together with their families comprised about 13 million people, contributing some Sfr. 80 billion (about …

What makes a hero? Do heroes exist in themselves, or only insofar as they are valuable in the folk mythology of their time? What criteria are used to label one man as an important historical personage, whose name and rank are to be noted and memorize, while a contemporary of greater personal achievement is consigned to oblivion?

The Algal Flora Of The Campus Of Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, Cheng Mou-Sheng, Samuel R. Rushforth
The Algal Flora Of The Campus Of Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, Cheng Mou-Sheng, Samuel R. Rushforth
Great Basin Naturalist
The algal flora of the Brigham Young University campus is more diverse than previously thought. Sixty-eight genera containing 160 species of Chlorophyta, Euglenophyta, Chrysophyta, and Cyanophyta were collected and identified. The greatest number of species was obtained from a small pond in the arboretum, with progressively fewer species obtained in the irrigation canal partly surrounding the campus and in specialized habitats in the greenhouses.

Host-Induced Morphological Variations In The Strigeoid Trematode Posthodiplostomum Minimum (Trematoda: Diplostomatidae). Iii. Organs Of Attachment, James R. Palmieri
Great Basin Naturalist
A variety of amphibian, reptilian, avian, and mammalian hosts were used in experimental development of Posthodiplostomum minimum. As a result of this study much host-induced morphological variation was noted in several organs of attachment. Variations in the oral sucker ranged from a well-developed muscular organ to a weakly developed oral slit. Acetabular development ranged from well-developed to reduced forms lacking apical musculature, tegumental spines, and sensory structures. The holdfast organ showed marked reduction in most poikilothermic hosts.
Occurrence Of Ticks On Mule Deer In Central Utah, Jordan C. Pederson
Occurrence Of Ticks On Mule Deer In Central Utah, Jordan C. Pederson
Great Basin Naturalist
Two species of ticks were collected from mule deer and identified as Dermacentor albipictus (Packard) and Ixodes sp. The rate of occurrence of these ticks was found to be 99.6 percent and 0.4 percent, respectively. The infestation rate increased from 18.2 percent in January, to 87.5 percent in February, to 100.0 percent in March.
Biomass Of Fifty Conifer Forests And Nutrient Exports Associated With Their Harvest, T. Weaver, F. Forcella
Biomass Of Fifty Conifer Forests And Nutrient Exports Associated With Their Harvest, T. Weaver, F. Forcella
Great Basin Naturalist
Biomasses of climax Rocky Mountain forests studied ranged from less than 50 to more than 300 tons/ha. Total biomass was approximately 1.5 times the biomass of normally merchantable boles. When compared with conventional bole harvest, the nutrient exports associated with harvest of all aboveground parts in these stands would apparently be at least three times higher for nitrogen, six times higher for phosphorus, four times higher for potassium, and three times higher for calcium.

Typhlodromus Mcgregori Chant (Acarina: Phytoseiidae) And Its Control Of Phytophagous Mites In Utah And Southern California Apple Orchards, B. A. Croft, C. D. Jorgensen
Great Basin Naturalist
A review of published and unpublished data for the predatory mite Typhlodromus mcgregori in Utah and southern California apple growing areas is presented to summarize its role. Typhlodromus mcgregori was not found resistant to pesticides and, although usually present with Bryobia rubrioculus, only when Aculus schlechtendali was also present was there significant predation on B. rubrioculus. Aculus schlechtendali was considered the primary host and B. rubrioculus secondary for T. mcgregori. Typhlodromus occidentalis was always found associated with Tetranychus spp. and often with Eotetranychus and Pronematus ubiquitus in unsprayed orchards.

The Use Of Nuclear Reactions And Sims For Quantitative Depth Profiling Of Hydrogen In Amorphous Silicon, David D. Allred, G. J. Clark, C. W. White, B. R. Appleton, C. W. Magee, D. E. Carlson
Faculty Publications
Depth profiles for hydrogen in amorphous silicon have been determined by the use of resonant nuclear reactions [1H(15N,αγ)12C and 1H(19F,αγ)16O] and by secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS). Independent calibration procedures were used for the two techniques. Measurements were made on the same amorphous silicon film to provide a direct comparison of the two hydrogen analysis techniques. The hydrogen concentration in the bulk of the film was determined to be about 9 at % H. The SIMS results agree with the resonant nuclear reaction results to within 10%, which demonstrates that quantitative hydrogen depth profiles can be obtained by SIMS analysis …

The Accumulation And Metabolism Of Triphenyltin Hydroxide (Du-Ter) In Crayfish (Procambarus Clarkii) In A Model Ecosystem, John Gary Hollingshaus
Theses and Dissertations
Triphenyltin hydroxide (TPTH) appears to be relatively stable in soil. Only minor partitioning into water occurred because of the insolubility of TPTH in water and its adsorption to soil. Residues in the water were also relatively stable. The concentration. of TPTH in the tissues of crayfish exposed to 1.0 ppm of TPTH in the soil was 0.1 ppm or 10% that of the environment. Crayfish exposed to 0.01 ppm of TPTH in the soil had 0.005 ppm TPTH in their tissues or 50% that of the environment. Greater than 80% of the residue in the muscle tissue appeared to be …

Ethionine-Resistant Mutants Of The Filamentous Blue-Green Alga Plectonema Boryanum /|Cby Wayne M. Hentsche, Wayne M. Hentschel
Theses and Dissertations
Ethionine-resistant mutans of Plectonema boryanum have been isolated and partially characterized. The mutant strains exhibit at least 100-fold increase in resistance to L-ethionine. The nature of the change which confers ethionine resistance is not known, but appears to result from the inability of the resistant strains to incorporate ethionine into acid-precipitable material. Initially, ethionine has no effect on the growth rate of the wild-type or the resistant strains, but several hours of exposure to the analog at a concentration greater than 0.5 μg/ml causes a marked inhibition of growth and bleaching in the wild-type cells. The onset of bleaching precedes …
