High-Temperature Battery Calorimeter, L. D. Hansen, R. H. Hart, D. M. Chen, H. F. Gibbard Apr 1982

High-Temperature Battery Calorimeter, L. D. Hansen, R. H. Hart, D. M. Chen, H. F. Gibbard

Faculty Publications

A battery calorimeter was built for the measurement of thermal energy generation of high-temperature lithium–aluminum/iron sulfide battery cells, which are under development for electric vehicle propulsion and other energy storage applications. The calorimeter was designed with a temperature range of 400˚–500˚C, a detection limit of 1 mW, and an upper limit of heat flow of 50 W. The results of measurements on 200-Ah LiAl/FeS cells were in excellent agreement with the predictions of thermodynamic calculations based on precise measurements of the total cell polarization and the temperature coefficient of the emf. Details of the construction and operation principles of this …

Testing Theories Of Behavior With Scripture, Stephen L. Brower Apr 1982

Testing Theories Of Behavior With Scripture, Stephen L. Brower

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

This paper suggests procedures for testing behavioral theory with scripture. A theory of self-betrayal (Warner, et. al., 1979) is examined against the series of self-betrayal "strategies" Cain used to avoid the consequences of killing his brother Abel. The theory fits and explains well the behavior of Cain. A second example of testing theory with scripture deals with guidelines for assessing fundamental assumptions upon which theories of behavior are constructed.

Vegetation And Soil Factors In The Relation To Slope Position On Foothill Knolls In The Uinta Basin Of Utah, Miles O. Moretti, Jack D. Brotherson Mar 1982

Vegetation And Soil Factors In The Relation To Slope Position On Foothill Knolls In The Uinta Basin Of Utah, Miles O. Moretti, Jack D. Brotherson

Great Basin Naturalist

Vegetation and soil differences with respect to slope position were studied on foothill knolls in the Uinta Basin of Utah. Plant communities on windswept ridges (top of slope) exhibited several unique characteristics when compared to the other slope communities. These communities at the top and base of slopes were sufficiently different in respect to plant life form composition, plant cover, wind-adapted growth forms, and percent exposed rock that they should be considered separate community types. Mineral concentrations in plant tissue and soil samples declined downslope in some cases and increased in others. Diversity decreased downslope as shrubs became dominant over …

Weather Conditions In Early Summer And Their Effects On September Blue Grouse (Dendragapus Obscurus) Harvest, Joy D. Cedarleaf, S. Dick Worthen, Jack D. Brotherson Mar 1982

Weather Conditions In Early Summer And Their Effects On September Blue Grouse (Dendragapus Obscurus) Harvest, Joy D. Cedarleaf, S. Dick Worthen, Jack D. Brotherson

Great Basin Naturalist

Relationships of temperature and precipitation to the reproductive success of Blue Grouse (Dendragapus obscurus) were investigated. Maximum and minimum temperatures followed similar patterns during the years 1976–1981 and showed no patterns relative to hatching success. Precipitation data, however, was variable. When significant amounts of precipitation fell during the last three weeks of the hatching period, chick survival and, therefore, recruitment were adversely affected. We suggest that precipitation occurring at the end of the hatch period reduces the September harvest of birds.

First Record Of Pygmy Rabbits (Brachylagus Idahoensis) In Wyoming, Thomas M. Campbell Iii, Tim W. Clark, Craig R. Groves

Great Basin Naturalist

Pygmy rabbits are reported for the first time in southwestern Wyoming. The range for this species is thus extended 240 km and 145 km from the nearest records in Idaho and Utah, respectively.

Local Floras Of The Southwest, 1920–1980: An Annotated Bibliography, Janice E. Bowers

Great Basin Naturalist

Local floras, that is, plant lists for relatively small areas, are widely scattered, often unpublished, and difficult to locate. Over 100 local floras from the southwestern United States (Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, New Mexico, and Utah) are listed and briefly annotated.

The Relation Between Species Numbers And Island Characteristics For Habitat Islands In A Volcanic Landscape, Steven H. Carter-Lovejoy Mar 1982

The Relation Between Species Numbers And Island Characteristics For Habitat Islands In A Volcanic Landscape, Steven H. Carter-Lovejoy

Great Basin Naturalist

Within the Craters of the Moon Lava Flow in southeastern Idaho are kipukas, islands of sagebrush habitat isolated by relatively barren lava. In 1979 I counted the number of species of plants, small mammals, and reptiles for a series of kipukas. The degree of isolation of a kipuka was not related to numbers of species found there; thus, these data do not support the equilibrium theory of island biogeography. For most of the study organisms lava is not a significant barrier to dispersal. Larger kipukas support larger numbers of species. For plants this relationship likely is a result of the …
