A Place Called Dana The Centennial History Of Trinity Seminary And Dana College 1884-1984, Gail Q. Unruh, Reviewer, Peter L. Petersen
The Bridge
Blair, Nebraska, located some twenty miles north of Omaha, is the home of Dana College and Trinity Seminary. Together, these companion institutions formed one of the focal points of Danish immigrant efforts to establish themselves in their new homeland and to preserve elements of their cultural heritage. In the opening pages of his A Place Called Dana, Peter L. Petersen declares his desire to accomplish four interrelated goals: to write a history of the two associated institutions of Dana College and Trinity Seminary; to illuminate some of the accomplishments of Danish-Americans; to highlight the significant contribution to higher education of …
A Pale Reflection: American Indian Images In Mormon Arts, P. Jane Hafen
A Pale Reflection: American Indian Images In Mormon Arts, P. Jane Hafen
Theses and Dissertations
American Indians in Mormon arts suffer from the imposition of the white man's traditional ideas, images and stereotypes. An examination of Mormon literature since 1941, Mormon hymns and music, and Mormon visual arts reveals little consideration of Native American values: tribal affiliation, significance of place and community, myth and ritual. While the mainstream of American art has incorporated Native American values into Indian representations, and even found a place for Native American artists, Mormon arts adhere to historical misinterpretations, despite a number of fine Mormon Native American artists.

How I Spent My Summer Vacation: Three Essays On Place And Meaning, Reed Evan Richards
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis consists of three personal essays and a postface, in part experiments in genre, mode, and structure, and in large part explorations of the meanings of specific places in culture and on the self-definition of the observer-writer, the first essay being set in Florida and centered at Disneyworld; the second consisting of fragments of observations along the route from St. Augustine to Washington, D.C., and ending with a brief fiction; the third, a speculative/anti-speculative rumination over many things, including meaning, death, faith, and enshrinement, and set in Illinois, Missouri, and South Africa; and the postface a theoretical/descriptive theoretical defense …

A Descriptive Analysis Of The Current Status Of Paid Religious Broadcasting On National Television, Wayne R. Bills
A Descriptive Analysis Of The Current Status Of Paid Religious Broadcasting On National Television, Wayne R. Bills
Theses and Dissertations
In examining the use of paid television by various evangelical organizations (the "Electronic Church") as contrasted with its use by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS), several important differences were discovered. First, the programs of the electronic church are usually designed much like a normal Sunday service with a "preacher" and "congregation" (the T.V. viewers). The LDS approach has been to communicate religious principles through the use of a story. Their productions are attractive to a large audience because they often feature a well-known television or motion picture celebrity, and are aired during prime-time viewing hours.

Selected Aspects Of Family Change In Provo, Utah: A Replication Of Canning's 1955 Survey, Richard B. Miller
Selected Aspects Of Family Change In Provo, Utah: A Replication Of Canning's 1955 Survey, Richard B. Miller
Theses and Dissertations
This study is a replication of Canning's 1955 survey of family life in Provo, Utah. The original sample consisted of 239 couples who were married and currently living there. The replication was a 1983 mail survey that used many of Canning's original questions and included a sample of 255 Provo families.
This study measured changes in several courtship and family variables using the companionship family as an ideal type. Findings included increases in the emphasis on the role of romantic love in mate selection, handsomeness as an attractive quality that women seek in a spouse, family members seeking recreation outside …

The breathlessness gathered until he was drowning again. He reached for the mask-translucent rubber, green-attached by a rubber umbilical to an ugly green cylinder which rose from behind the end table like some leafless prehistoric plant. He placed the mask over mouth and nose, snapped the elastic into his hair, grasped the handle at the top of the cylinder. He shut his eyes, braced himself, and concentrated on being full. But for all their ballooning, for all their assaulting of other organs, his lungs' appetite wouldn't quell. He screwed the handle all the way counter-clockwise. The supposedly tasteless stuff tasted …

Chaucer's Physicians: Their Texts, Contexts, And The Canterbury Tales, Elizabeth Penley Skerpan
Chaucer's Physicians: Their Texts, Contexts, And The Canterbury Tales, Elizabeth Penley Skerpan
Quidditas
In the Canterbury Tales, the pilgrim Chaucer lists an impressive series of medical authors whom his fellow pilgrim the Physician is supposed to have read. As we continue past the General Prologue, we discover that these writers do not merely embellish the PHysician's claims to a well-rounded medical education: two are actually mentioned in the course of story-telling, though, oddly, not by the Physician, but by the Pardoner and Parson. These two pilgrims' references appear in tales more concerned with spiritual than physical healing and health, and indeed the Parson preaches on the "cure" of sins as a necessary …
Medieval Materials And Methods For Teaching French In England, Carol J. Harvey
Medieval Materials And Methods For Teaching French In England, Carol J. Harvey
Quidditas
Following the Conquest of England in 1066, the Norman dialect oof French was in use as both a spoken and a literary language of England. Immigration continued sporadically for over two centuries, facilitated by the fact that the kings of England were also dukes of Normandy. Indeed, when Henry II married Eleanor of Aquitaine in 1152, the whole of western France form Normandy to the Pyrenees was for a time under the sway of the English kings. Although John Lackland lost many French possessions in 1204, migration may actually have intensified as he encouraged the many Frenchmen whoo disliked conditions …
Where And Why Are Misreporters Misreporting?, Rick Malmgren
Where And Why Are Misreporters Misreporting?, Rick Malmgren
Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies
Survey researchers are, of necessity, perennially concerned about the validity of survey questions. It is often difficult, if not impossible, to establish conclusively the validity of many attitudinal and behavioral questions, but sometimes invalidity is blatant. For example, in every National Election Study conducted by the University of Michigan Survey Research Center (SRC) there has been a consistent over-report of voting behavior. When the SRC's turnout rate is compared with the official election returns, the survey derived data continually exceeds the actual results, usually by more than 10 percent. In 1968 Aage Clausen said "the consistency, as well as the …

Beyond Teaching Correct Principles (Some Thoughts On Mormon Youth And The Development Of Free Agency), Grant Owen
Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy
It is alleged that families that have not made adequate preparation for coping with the developing agency of their teenage children seek to contain that growth. As in other religious families under similar stress, LDS parents may attempt to enhance their power and credibility by aligning their authority with that of the church. The natural movement of the adolescent away from parental control may thus be complicated and result in the unnecessary disruption of church ties as well as familial bonds by the confused and frustrated youth. Measures intended to foster parental confidence and adolscent competence are discussed.

The Chadha Decision: A New Light In The Constitutional Balance, Murray Snow

In the past decade, there has been an interesting argument in American legal circles concerning the constitutionality of the legislative veto. This type of veto is a provision included in legislation (and in some cases making up the legislation itslef) which allows Congress to cancel executive actions. Soem scholars argue that since such vetoes take place and have the force of law without recieving the signature of the President, nor in many cases the approval of the other House of Congress, they are unconsitutional. Others oint out, however, that for the Congress to exercise a legislative veto both Houses of …

Electoral Revision In Japan--1982, Ray Christensen
Electoral Revision In Japan--1982, Ray Christensen
Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies
The revision of an election system is one of th touchiest issues in a western-style democracy. Every politician knows that a proposed reapportionment scheme might affect his chances for reelection. Thus, many accuse politicions of not considering the merits of a revision proposal, but only ther personal consequences. This phenomenon is seen at regular 10-year intervals in the United States. With each new census, some states are required to redraw their congressional district boundaries, and, invariably, some of the disputes that ensue have to be settled by the courts or a nonpartisan panel. This kind of action is by no …
The Extended Republic And The Control Of Majority Faction: A Contrast And Comparison Of De Tocqueville And The American Lawgivers, Anne Rowley
Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies
The French political philosopher, Alexis de Tocqueville, saw the endurance of American democracy as a possible model that would enable his contrymen to temper the illl effects of their own democratic system. Although he did not advocate that every aspect of the American model should be strictly adhered to, he worte about the goodness of American laws and the wisdom of the Americna Founding Fathers. Furthermore, as he described the practical application of their ideology, de Tocqueville appeared to align himself with most of their beliefs.

I didn't want to go home, but the nagging beeps sounding from my wristwatch reminded me l could delay it no longer. Flicking the switch on the terminal I had stared at all afternoon, I reluctantly broke away from my research. A part of my mind seemed connected to the computer, for when I turned it off, the stacks of equations broke apart and drifted away into some dark corner of my memory. I dropped a few papers into the briefcase on the floor, then donning my coat, headed for the door beneath the green glow of the exit sign. …

Marcus Lee Hansen: America's First Transethnic Historian, Moses Rischin
The Bridge
In a world in flux, the historian must strike a balance between change and tradition. The historian of American immigration and culture particularly sits poised on the knife's edge, seeking universal categories of analysis and understanding while immersing himself in a loving study of distinct peoples, places, and ways of life in disarray. He is the boomer engineer committed to democracy and equality, progress and growth, mobility and technology, science and medicine, individualism and freedom. But he is also the artist, priest, and guardian of culture, the admirer of fragile arts and crafts and tastes perfected over generations, of customs, …
