How Does External Referencing Define Sense Of Self And Link To Relational Well-Being?, Amber A. Price
How Does External Referencing Define Sense Of Self And Link To Relational Well-Being?, Amber A. Price
Theses and Dissertations
As individuals develop, it is natural to reference social situations to learn about the self. Even as adults, some learning about the self comes from interactions with others. However, when adults consistently allow others to define their sense of self, their focus may shift away from connection and intimacy toward external factors. No studies have examined how allowing others to define the sense of self is associated with intimacy and satisfaction in relationships. Using structural equation modeling, this study examined whether allowing others to define the self is associated with a decrease in emotional intimacy, relational satisfaction, and sexual satisfaction …
Effects Of Actual And Perceived Air Pollution On U.S. Twitter Sentiment, George R. Garcia Iii
Effects Of Actual And Perceived Air Pollution On U.S. Twitter Sentiment, George R. Garcia Iii
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Objective
This study examines the associations between actual and perceived air pollution (PM2.5, AQI, and ground visibility), weather information, and expressed sentiment via US Twitter. Heterogeneity in the associations across date and county characteristics are also explored.
Methods
A sentiment index was constructed using 27,827,828 geotagged U.S. tweets posted between May 31 and November 30, 2015. Associations between AQI category changes and the sentiment index were estimated using multi-cutoff regression discontinuity models. Associations between same-day and lagged PM2.5, ground visibility, and the sentiment index were estimated using weighted linear regression models. Models include weather variables and …
How Has Covid-19 Changed Consumer Participation In Value Co-Creation?, Katelynne Hinckley
How Has Covid-19 Changed Consumer Participation In Value Co-Creation?, Katelynne Hinckley
Student Works
This research documents value co-creative interactions between firms and consumers during the Covid-19 pandemic. I offer insights based on theory to explain how and why consumers are changing, especially in relation to service industries. The context of Covid-19 demands that both companies and consumers adapt by shouldering a greater burden of the value creation process in order to create value that is at least comparable to and, at most, exceeding that of pre-pandemic times. The extent to which a consumer or a firm becomes a greater participant than before is highly dependent on the industry and Covid-19 restrictions. While many …
Automated Cyber Ranges: Design Features, Architectures, Scenarios And Impacts, Dezhang Wen
Automated Cyber Ranges: Design Features, Architectures, Scenarios And Impacts, Dezhang Wen
Undergraduate Honors Theses
As cybersecurity becomes increasingly important in the digital world, the need for a virtual environment where security professionals can safely practice defending against real-life attacks is gradually rising. This thesis explores, participates in, and expands upon the design and implementation of such an environment, also known as a “cyber range”. We build a model where real-life attacks and defense can be successfully simulated, as well as further improving the process through automation. Ultimately, it proposes and experiments with the idea of an automated cyber range in order to enhance both the efficiency and effectiveness of a security testbed.
The Effect Of Selection Process On Judicial Behavior, Grant Baldwin
The Effect Of Selection Process On Judicial Behavior, Grant Baldwin
Student Works
Does the judicial selection process affect judicial behavior? In this paper I argue that the judicial selection process does affect the behavior and the character of the judiciary. Specifically, I argue that judges that are selected by executives in systems where no accountability to the people is present will mirror the ideological views of the executive in making their judicial decisions. I also argue that the competitive nature of elections influences judges to be more responsive to public opinion than those held accountable on non-competitive retention ballots. Lastly, I argue that judges that are elected or retained on non-partisan ballots …
Engineering Cell-Free Protein Expression Systems For Biotherapeutics And Biosensing, John Porter Hunt
Engineering Cell-Free Protein Expression Systems For Biotherapeutics And Biosensing, John Porter Hunt
Theses and Dissertations
Therapeutic proteins have become a cornerstone of modern medicine since the FDA approval of recombinant human insulin in 1982. Likewise, biosensors transform chemical detection and disease diagnostics by identifying biomarkers, chemical contaminants, and infective agents. Long-standing methods for creating therapeutics and biosensors employ whole cells such as Escherichia coli (E. coli). Alternatively, cell-free protein synthesis (CFPS) employs the enzymatic reactions necessary for protein production and biosensing within a cell, but in an engineered reactor environment facilitating unprecedented access to and control over biochemical machinery, preservation by cryodesiccation for portable deployment, and functionality in cytotoxic applications. This dissertation reports advances in …
Indigenous Australian Latter-Day Saint Dot Art: A Convergence Of Tradition And Faith, Katie Loveless
Indigenous Australian Latter-Day Saint Dot Art: A Convergence Of Tradition And Faith, Katie Loveless
Student Works
This research documents the female Indigenous Australian artists in the Northern Territory of Australia who are creating Latter-Day Saint narratives using the method of traditional dot art. These pieces of art are visually mesmerizing and filled with important symbolism- both from the perspectives of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints’ and Indigenous Australian culture. Dot art is a sacred method of communication for Indigenous people and traditionally reserved for male tribal members for the purpose of creating symbolic ancient "dream" narratives only to be understood by indigenous Australians. Church narratives have only recently started to be depicted in …
The Communicative Effects Of Anonymity Online: A Natural Language Analysis Of The Faceless, Caleb Johnson
The Communicative Effects Of Anonymity Online: A Natural Language Analysis Of The Faceless, Caleb Johnson
Undergraduate Honors Theses
An ever-increasing number of Americans have an active social media
presence online. As of March 2020, an estimated 79% of Americans were active
monthly users of some sort. Many of these online platforms allow users to
operate anonymously which could potentially lead to shifts in communicative
behavior. I first discuss my compilation process of the Twitter Anonymity
Dataset (TAD), a human-classified dataset of 100,000 Twitter accounts that are
categorized by their level of identifiability to their real-world agent. Next, I
investigate some of the structural differences between the classification levels
and employ a variety of Natural Language Processing models and …
Milk-Fat Intake And Differences In Abdominal Adiposity And Bmi: Evidence Based On 13,544 Randomly Selected Adults, Klarissa Rae Wilkinson
Milk-Fat Intake And Differences In Abdominal Adiposity And Bmi: Evidence Based On 13,544 Randomly Selected Adults, Klarissa Rae Wilkinson
Theses and Dissertations
The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between milk-fat intake and obesity, particularly abdominal obesity, in 13,544 U.S. adults. A secondary objective was to determine the extent to which the association was influenced by multiple potential confounding variables. This cross-sectional study used data from the 2011–2016 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Level of milk-fat content regularly consumed was the exposure variable. Body mass index (BMI) and sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD), a measure of abdominal obesity, were the outcome variables. SAD correlates strongly with visceral fat, when measured by computed tomography, and has been shown …
Historic Methods Of Trapping Plains Spotted Skunks: Implications For Modern Survey Methodology, D. Blake Sasse
Historic Methods Of Trapping Plains Spotted Skunks: Implications For Modern Survey Methodology, D. Blake Sasse
Western North American Naturalist
Plains spotted skunks (Spilogale putorius interrupta) were once common over a wide range, but at present they are much less abundant and infrequently captured. Therefore, it can be difficult to assess the efficacies of capture techniques in the field. I gathered data on the baits, lures, and types of trapping locations recommended in trapping manuals and in articles from trapping magazines published in the early 1900s. A total of 43 trap site recommendations, 42 bait recommendations, and 9 lure recommendations were gleaned from 36 historic articles or books. Seven of 43 trap sites (16.3%) were described simply as …
Lymphocyte Proteomics For Monitoring Long Term Immune System Dynamics, Michaela Mccown
Lymphocyte Proteomics For Monitoring Long Term Immune System Dynamics, Michaela Mccown
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Time dependent change in lymphocytes provides a necessary background for monitoring the development of Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia from asymptomatic to malignant. Several bulk proteomics studies characterize differences between tumor cells and healthy B cells, yet the transition to symptomatic disease is not well understood. This could be shown by a longitudinal study beginning with asymptomatic patients if the rare tumor cells in early stages can be isolated from small volume blood draws and effectively characterized with few cells, such as was done here using healthy B cells to provide a baseline for such studies to discriminate routine fluctuation from pathogenic …
En Torno Al 'Lenguaje Inclusivo', Orlando Alba
En Torno Al 'Lenguaje Inclusivo', Orlando Alba
Faculty Publications
Nonlinear Trajectory Tracking Control For Winged Evtol Uavs, Jacob Willis, Randal W. Beard
Nonlinear Trajectory Tracking Control For Winged Evtol Uavs, Jacob Willis, Randal W. Beard
Faculty Publications
Current control methods for winged eVTOL UAVs consider the vehicle primarily as a fixed-wing aircraft with the addition of vertical thrust used only during takeoff and landing. These methods provide good long-range flight handling but fail to consider the full dynamics of the vehicle for tracking complex trajectories. We present a trajectory tracking controller for the full dynamics of a winged eVTOL UAV in hover, fixed-wing, and partially transitioned flight scenarios. We show that in low- to moderate-speed flight, trajectory tracking can be achieved using a variety of pitch angles. In these conditions, the pitch of the vehicle is a …
Evaluation Of Concrete Bridge Decks Comprising Twisted Steel Micro Rebar, Aubrey Lynne Hebdon
Evaluation Of Concrete Bridge Decks Comprising Twisted Steel Micro Rebar, Aubrey Lynne Hebdon
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this research was to investigate the effects of twisted steel micro rebar (TSMR) fibers on 1) the mechanical properties of concrete used in bridge deck construction and 2) the early cracking behavior of concrete bridge decks. This research involved the evaluation of four newly constructed bridge decks through a series of laboratory and field tests. At each location, one deck was constructed using a conventional concrete mixture without TSMR, and one was constructed using the same conventional concrete mixture with an addition of 40 lb of TSMR per cubic yard of concrete. Regarding laboratory testing, the conventional …
Initial Effects Of Subchapter V Of Chapter 11 Bankruptcy During Covid-19, Denise Han
Initial Effects Of Subchapter V Of Chapter 11 Bankruptcy During Covid-19, Denise Han
Undergraduate Honors Theses
On February 19, 2020, the Small Business Reorganization Act of 2019 went into effect, ushering in the use of Subchapter V by small business debtors. Lawmakers crafted Subchapter V with the intent to make the reorganization process more streamlined and cost effective than the standard Chapter 11 was for these debtors. With features such as the Subchapter V trustee, cramdown provisions, filing deadlines, lack of a creditors’ committee, and relaxed disclosure requirements, small business debtors should in theory be better positioned to emerge from bankruptcy as viable entities. Through quantitative analysis and qualitative research, this Article explores initial observations on …

Connected: A Return To Ecological Awareness In Traditional And Modern Media, Jacob Reese
Connected: A Return To Ecological Awareness In Traditional And Modern Media, Jacob Reese
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This thesis responds to the claim that traditional literary forms and narrative structures have contributed to the global climate crisis by perpetuating anthropocentric viewpoints and reinforcing the modern fixation on progress in industrial cultures. Ecocritics argue that by creating an unrealistic separation between humans and their environment in their narratives, artists are allowing the ecologies and spaces which create a cohesive world to become a mere setting for the social or psychological human drama rather than serving as an integral part of the narrative. With these criticisms in mind, this thesis provides an analysis of three pieces of traditional and …

This work details a model for evaluating the relative ash deposition propensity of various solid fuels without the complicated spatial considerations included in CFD modeling. Four deposition mechanisms are included, namely: inertial impaction, thermophoresis, condensation, and eddy impaction. This model has been validated and shown to effectively predict ash deposit rates for a wide range of solid fuels including coal, biomass, and their blends, burned in a 100 kW rated downflow combustor. Specifically, this work presents and compares two separate models for the sticking efficiency of impacting ash particles on a coupon surface: the melt fraction stickiness …

Many computerized tools for comparing phonetic transcriptions have been proposed and shared in the past; however, previous tools are relatively difficult to access and incorporate into clinical and research practice, or require users to learn additional phonetic symbol systems. The purpose of this project was to develop and test a readily available web-based application for quantitatively comparing phonetic transcriptions that are input using International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) symbols. A web-based computer application was developed to allow for IPA phonetic transcription comparison. A point-and-click keyboard was developed to provide support for character input of the full IPA, as well as most …

Group Gender Composition: A Field-Experiment Evaluating Individual Levels Of Group Satisfaction And Perceived Group Effectiveness, Jacob Davis
Undergraduate Honors Theses
Group collaboration is commonly used in educational and professional settings. This paper will identify whether female-majority groups are more likely to see positive group dynamics than female-minority groups. Group dynamics in this project will be measured as individual levels of group satisfaction and group effectiveness. I use data from a field experiment where university students who took a weekly study group class had their experience evaluated with monthly surveys. My results find no statistically significant relationship between female-majority group conditions and perceptions of group satisfaction or group effectiveness.
