A Provably Convergent Dynamic Training Method For Multi-Layer Perceptron Networks, Timothy L. Andersen, Tony R. Martinez Sep 1995

A Provably Convergent Dynamic Training Method For Multi-Layer Perceptron Networks, Timothy L. Andersen, Tony R. Martinez

Faculty Publications

This paper presents a new method for training multi-layer perceptron networks called DMP1 (Dynamic Multilayer Perceptron 1). The method is based upon a divide and conquer approach which builds networks in the form of binary trees, dynamically allocating nodes and layers as needed. The individual nodes of the network are trained using a genetic algorithm. The method is capable of handling real-valued inputs and a proof is given concerning its convergence properties of the basic model. Simulation results show that DMP1 performs favorably in comparison with other learning algorithms.

Spiritual Interventions In Psychotherapy: A Survey Of The Practices And Beliefs Of Amcap Members, P. Scott Richards, Richard W. Potts Apr 1995

Spiritual Interventions In Psychotherapy: A Survey Of The Practices And Beliefs Of Amcap Members, P. Scott Richards, Richard W. Potts

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Three hundred members of the Association of Mormon Counselors and Psychotherapists (AMCAP) were randomly selected and asked about their use of spiritual interventions in their professional work. Two hundred and fifteen (72%) AMCAP members responded to the survey and indicated that they use a wide variety of spiritual interventions. Praying silently for clients, teaching spiritual concepts, encouraging forgiveness, using the religious community as a support, and encouraging clients to pray were used much more frequently than were priesthood blessing by therapists, praying with clients, and asking clients to memorize scriptures. Critical incident case examples provided by the therapists revealed that …

Youth Gang Violence: Community Interventions, Dale F. Pearson Apr 1995

Youth Gang Violence: Community Interventions, Dale F. Pearson

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

The rise of gang activity and crime--such as homicides, drive-by shootings, drug trafficking, burglary, and graffiti--poses a serious threat to many communities, including Utah. While juvenile homicides are relativety rare and constitute a fraction of all juvenile crime, its prevalence at all is a serious concern to parents, schools, and families in general. Some core problems which have given rise to the increase in violent gangs in society are discussed. Strategies and community interventions are recommended for this escalating social concern.

Spiritual “Reddyness”, Thomas W. Draper Apr 1995

Spiritual “Reddyness”, Thomas W. Draper

BYU Studies

My professional and spiritual identities were nurtured by a home that had its share of troubled water. Some of the trouble percolated from the inevitable miscombinations of a blended family; some flowed from children with difficult personalities. My family's strong commitment to the gospel of Jesus Christ made my parents, both of whom valued intellect, unwilling to make their reasoning or anyone else's valued intellect, unwilling to make their reasoning or anyone else's the final arbiter of life's goodness. I was grateful for my parents' reservations about reason, for their hesitation left a space for our family to be continually …

Factors Affecting Selection Of Winter Food And Roosting Resources By Porcupines In Utah, Dave Stricklan, Jerran T. Flinders, Rex G. Cates Jan 1995

Factors Affecting Selection Of Winter Food And Roosting Resources By Porcupines In Utah, Dave Stricklan, Jerran T. Flinders, Rex G. Cates

Great Basin Naturalist

Ecological and phytochemical factors potentially affecting winter dietary discrimination by porcupines (Erethizon dorsatum) in the mountain brush zone of Utah were studied. Porcupines utilized gambel oak (Quercus gambelii) as their primary winter food and roosting resource. Big-tooth maple (Acer grandidentatum) was the most common tree species in the study area but was rarely utilized by porcupines. Conifer species were used as a food and roosting resource significantly less often than they occurred in the study area, despite thermal advantages provided by their relatively dense canopies. Oak feed trees were successfully separated from conifer feed …

The Development And Validation Of The Missionary Language Performance Test, Blair E. Bateman Jan 1995

The Development And Validation Of The Missionary Language Performance Test, Blair E. Bateman

Theses and Dissertations

Performance tests are an effective way of assessing examinees' ability to perform specific job-related tasks. This thesis details the development and validation of a performance test designed to measure LDS missionaries' ability to perform missionary tasks in a foreign language, the Missionary Language Performance Test (MLPT).

The development of the test involved identifying a set of relevant missionary tasks, specifying the criteria to be evaluated, designing test items, devising a procedure for sampling tasks and for administering and rating the test, and training raters to administer the test. Three separate studies were conducted to validate the test: (a) both the …

1996 Allen D. Breck Award Winner: Narration And Quattrocento Annunciation Paintings, Joseph D. Parry

Quidditas

Quattrocento Annunciation paintings are particularly useful in offering us a better understanding of the nature of narration in Renaissance art. When we describe the narration in Renaissance art. When we describe the narrative construction of the Annunciation in the work of quattrocento painters, a Fra Angelico, a Fra FIlippo Lippi, or a Sandro Botticelli, we know, of course that the Annunciation as a narrative ultimately resides in the language of St. Luke's Gospel; though in being told and retold, it easily takes on a life of its own in oral transmissions, in paraphrasings in sermons, in elaborations in scriptural commentaries, …

Bowers V. Hardwick: Diverging Interpretations, Warren D. Leishman Jan 1995

Bowers V. Hardwick: Diverging Interpretations, Warren D. Leishman

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

Rarely does the serving of a simple misdemeanor warrant result in a case tried before the highest court in the land, but this is what happened to Michael Hardwick in August, 1982. Police officers arriving at his house were let in by a houseguest who led the policemen to the bedroom. At this point they stumbled upon Hardwick engaged in a sexual act with another man, an act which, under Georgia Code 16-6-2, constituted sodomy and was thus punishable "by imprisonment for not less than one nor more than twenty years." Michael Hardwick was arrested and charged, the first such …

Using Spiritual Interventions In Psychotherapy: Practices, Successes, Failures, And Ethical Concerns Of Mormon Psychotherapists, P. Scott Richards, Richard W. Potts Jan 1995

Using Spiritual Interventions In Psychotherapy: Practices, Successes, Failures, And Ethical Concerns Of Mormon Psychotherapists, P. Scott Richards, Richard W. Potts

Faculty Publications

Two hundred and fifteen (out of 300) randomly selected Mormon psychotherapists were surveyed and asked to indicate how frequently they use various spiritual interventions in psychotherapy and to describe successful and unsuccessful spiritual intervention case examples. The therapists indi- cated that they use a wide variety of spiritual interventions, including praying silently for clients, teaching spiritual concepts, encouraging forgiveness, and using the religious community as a sup- port. Many spiritual interventions were perceived by the therapists as potentially therapeutic. Pro- cess guidelines for using spiritual interventions were offered by the therapists, and ethical concerns (e.g., dual relationships, imposing values) were …

Organizing Tax Instruction: Evidence Regarding The Way Students Organize Tax Knowledge, Stephen T. Limberg, Michael S. Schadewald, Brian C. Spilker Jan 1995

Organizing Tax Instruction: Evidence Regarding The Way Students Organize Tax Knowledge, Stephen T. Limberg, Michael S. Schadewald, Brian C. Spilker

Faculty Publications

An important part of accounting curriculum reform is a movement away from traditional methods of organizing accounting courses toward improved organization schemes. Two basic approaches to organizing the content of tax courses are a transaction-based scheme and an entity-based scheme. This paper reports the results of an experiment that investigates which scheme is more consistent with how incoming masters in tax students organize tax knowledge and how different schemes affect the manner in which graduating students organize tax knowledge. Ninety students drawn from two full-time masters in taxation programs participated in the study. Subjects individually completed three separate tasks that …

The Psychological Relevance Of Phonological Generalizations In Spanish: An Experiment, David Eddington Jan 1995

The Psychological Relevance Of Phonological Generalizations In Spanish: An Experiment, David Eddington

Faculty Publications

A psycholinguistic experiment aids in determining if the phonological generalizations which appear in the literature on Spanish phonology are psychologically significant for Spanish speakers. The experiment focuses on whether common phonological alternations play a role in native speakers' perceptions of whether two words share a morpheme. The results indicate that they are a significant factor in speakers' perceptions of morphemic relatedness. Therefore, these findings provide some evidence that these phonological generalizations are psychologically valid, and not merely descriptive in nature.

Case-Based Reasoning: Application Techniques For Decision Support, James V. Hansen, Rayman D. Meservy, Larry E. Wood Jan 1995

Case-Based Reasoning: Application Techniques For Decision Support, James V. Hansen, Rayman D. Meservy, Larry E. Wood

Faculty Publications

Decision-support systems can be improved by enabling them to use past decisions to assist in making present ones. Reasoning from relevant past cases is appealing because it corresponds to some of the processes an expert uses to solve problems quickly and accurately. All this depends on an effective method of organizing cases for retrieval. This paper investigates the use of inductive networks as a means for case organization and outlines an approach to determining the desired number of cases-or assessing the reliability of a given number. Our method is demonstrated by application to decision making on corporate tax audits.
