Values-Based Clinical Ethics: A New Model Of Health And Ethics Consultation For Patients Suffering In Extremis, Adam Trainer May 2026

Values-Based Clinical Ethics: A New Model Of Health And Ethics Consultation For Patients Suffering In Extremis, Adam Trainer

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation argues that contemporary clinical ethics is inadequately equipped to support patients suffering in extremis because it relies on an insufficiently discriminating account of health and a constrained model of moral reasoning. Drawing on Bernard Lonergan, it reconceives health as an emergent, multi-layered, heuristic notion shaped by biological, psychological, social, and existential goods. On that basis, it critiques principlism’s global applicability thesis and the undergirding claim that its principles form part of the common morality, arguing that this justificatory structure is philosophically insufficient and practically limited for clinical ethics in cases marked by profound suffering, moral plurality, and normative …

Identifying Novel Gene Dysregulation Associated With Opioid Overdose Death: A Meta-Analysis Of Differential Gene Expression In Human Prefrontal Cortex, Javan K Carter, Bryan C Quach, Caryn Willis, Melyssa S Minto, Dana B Hancock, Janitza Montalvo-Ortiz, Olivia Corradin, Ryan W Logan, Consuelo Walss-Bass, Brion S Maher, Eric Otto Johnson May 2026

Only recently have human postmortem brain studies of differential gene expression (DGE) associated with opioid overdose death (OOD) been published; sample sizes from these studies have been modest (N = 40-153). To increase statistical power to identify OOD-associated genes, we leveraged human prefrontal cortex RNA-seq data from four independent OOD studies and conducted a transcriptome-wide DGE meta-analysis (N = 272). Using a unified gene expression data processing and analysis framework across studies, we meta-analyzed 20, 098 genes and found 335 significant differentially expressed genes (DEGs) by OOD status (false discovery rate <  0.05). Of these, 66 DEGs were among the list of 303 genes reported as OOD-associated in prior prefrontal cortex molecular studies (e.g., genes/gene families OPRK1, NPAS4, DUSP, EGR). The remaining 269 DEGs were not previously reported (e.g., NR4A2, SYT1, HCRTR2, BDNF). There was little evidence of genetic drivers for the observed differences in gene expression between opioid addiction cases and controls. Enrichment analyses for the DEGs across molecular pathway and biological process databases highlight an interconnected set of genes and pathways linked to orexin and tyrosine kinase receptors through MEK/ERK/MAPK signaling to affect neuronal plasticity.

Lived Experiences Of Homebound Adults With Health Access Needs, Margaret Henderson-Lee May 2026

Lived Experiences Of Homebound Adults With Health Access Needs, Margaret Henderson-Lee

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Homebound adults represent a medically vulnerable and rapidly growing population at heightened risk for unmet healthcare needs. Although quantitative studies document disparities in utilization and outcomes, less is known about how homebound individuals experience healthcare access. Grounded in Husserlian transcendental phenomenology, this qualitative study explored the lived experiences of homebound adults facing healthcare access barriers and examined how those experiences align with Levesque et al.’s patient-centered conceptual framework of access. Twenty homebound adults were recruited from a single residential care setting in the southeastern United States. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using an inductive phenomenology approach. Initial …

Oxytocin And Vasopressin Receptors Mediate Dopamine Release In The Nucleus Accumbens, Rebecca Chari Crenshaw May 2026

Oxytocin And Vasopressin Receptors Mediate Dopamine Release In The Nucleus Accumbens, Rebecca Chari Crenshaw

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Oxytocin (OXT) is a potential therapeutic target for substance use disorders due to its modulatory effects on mesolimbic dopamine function. While OXT activity in the nucleus accumbens (NAc) influences dopamine release, the receptor mechanisms underlying these effects remain unclear. Oxytocin receptors (OXTRs) and vasopressin 1A receptors (V1aRs) are both expressed in the NAc and may differentially regulate dopamine function. This study examined how selective activation and blockade of OXTRs and V1aRs within the NAc modulate phasic and tonic dopamine release using in vivo amperometry in male and female mice. Intra-NAc OXT decreased phasic, but not tonic, dopamine release. Similarly, activation …

Enhancing Psychiatry Residents’ Knowledge And Comfort With Clozapine Prescribing Through Educational Interventions, Christopher Stewart, Alexander Hunter, Faith Franzwa, Quan Huynh, Jennifer Stettler, Nauman Ashraf, Dawny M. Barnhart

Student Publications

Introduction: Clozapine is the most effective antipsychotic for treatment-resistant schizophrenia but remains underutilized due to safety concerns and monitoring complexity. Recent discontinuation of the Clozapine Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS) program reduced regulatory barriers but shifted responsibility for monitoring to clinicians. Psychiatry residents may lack adequate training and confidence to prescribe clozapine safely in this new context. The goal of this study is to evaluate the impact of a structured educational intervention on psychiatry residents’ knowledge of clozapine prescribing and management.

Methods: This study was a single-institution quality improvement study using a pre-post design. Participants were psychiatry residents from …

Agnosticism and atheism are often grouped simply as nonreligious identities, yet emerging research highlights their distinct psychological profiles and social implications. Among these distinctions, collective narcissism–characterized by strong attachment to one’s group, exceptionalism, and grievance for recognition–offers a framework for understanding identity processes in both nonreligious groups. We examined whether agnostics and atheists exhibit collective narcissism and its forms (agentic–focused on exceptional effectiveness; communal–focused on exceptional morality) similarly to believers. We explored cross-denominational variance in agentic and communal collective narcissism levels relying on data from 77 countries (N = 3,570; 1227 agnostics, 2343 atheists). Agnostics and atheists from secular countries …

Conscientiousness And Collegiate Athletes: An Item Response Theory Analysis, Tyler Hall May 2026

Conscientiousness And Collegiate Athletes: An Item Response Theory Analysis, Tyler Hall

College Honors Program

The purpose of this study is to examine how the facets (Kitchenham, L. et al., 2019) and aspects (Roberts et al., 2005) of conscientiousness influence collegiate athletes and how this understanding can be applied to the development of athletes and coaches. Like everyone else, student-athletes face daily stressors that can hinder their performance both in the classroom and on the field. Personality traits play a significant role in an individual's ability to manage these stressors (Lopes Dos Santos, M., 2020). This study examined conscientiousness, one of the Big Five Personality Traits defined by McCrae and Costa (1986), which is characterized …

Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations and analyzed using thematic …

Nature As The Foundation: A Shift In Pedagogy, Mary Moroney-Fernandez May 2026

Nature As The Foundation: A Shift In Pedagogy, Mary Moroney-Fernandez

The Cicadian

Somewhere in the United States right now, a child is sitting beneath fluorescent lights while the world outside continues without her. This paper argues that her confinement is not accidental, but rather theoretical. Examining the divergent frameworks of Friedrich Fröbel and Jean Piaget, it traces how American public schooling absorbed a vision of learning organized around cognitive individualism while displacing Fröbel's relational vision of child and nature. Drawing on reflection, historical analysis, and research, this paper contends that lasting reform requires confronting the foundational assumptions that built the classroom in the first place.

The Nexus Between Sustainable Banking, Customer Trust, And Bank Loyalty In The Bangladeshi Banking Industry: A Structural Equation Modelling Approach, Rashed Mahmud Shakil, Md. Ashfikul Islam, Md Raihatul Islam Hridoy

Business Review

The increasing customer demand for environmentally-friendly practices makes adoption of sustainable banking (SB) strategies a great opportunity for banks wanting to ensure greater loyalty among their customers. However, the impact of SB on bank loyalty (BL) of customers in the Bangladeshi banking sector is limited in the scholarly literature. Thus, the present research investigates the association between SB and BL and the intervening influence of customer trust (CT) in this association. The proposed research model was developed based on the Social Exchange Theory. The research utilized a purposive sampling technique and employed data obtained through 230 questionnaires distributed amongst customers …

Breaking The Cycle: The C.A.R.E. Manager Model To Address Intergenerational Incarceration, Amber Pelan, Miranda Jacobsen May 2026

Breaking The Cycle: The C.A.R.E. Manager Model To Address Intergenerational Incarceration, Amber Pelan, Miranda Jacobsen

Criminology and Criminal Justice Theses and Dissertations

Generational incarceration is a significant social problem in which criminal justice involvement is repeated across multiple generations of the same family. Children of incarcerated parents face elevated risks of trauma, poverty, educational disruption, mental health challenges, and later justice system involvement. These patterns demonstrate that incarceration often harms the entire family rather than only the individual offender. This project examines why generational incarceration occurs and identifies strategies to interrupt the cycle. The project uses a literature review methodology to integrate criminological 4 theory, sociological research, and policy analysis. These theories explain how parental incarceration disrupts child development, weakens family bonds, …

Proactive Violence Prevention: A Universal Bi-Annual Violence-Needs Assessment Tool For Grades K-12, Millie Fritzler, Emily Linehan May 2026

Proactive Violence Prevention: A Universal Bi-Annual Violence-Needs Assessment Tool For Grades K-12, Millie Fritzler, Emily Linehan

Criminology and Criminal Justice Theses and Dissertations

“Violence prevention begins in the high chair, not the electric chair” (Reiner, as cited in Davis et al., 2002). Two elements are essential to successful violence prevention: interventions that start early and interventions that are consistent (Davis et al., 2002; Dodge et al., 2015). The first five years are crucial for development; therefore, violence prevention needs to happen as early as possible to identify and address potential risk factors before harmful behaviors become reinforced (Davis et al., 2002). Despite this knowledge for the need for early violence prevention, schools still lack a truly proactive, universal system for identifying violence-related risk …

Crowding, Capacity, And Reform: Exploring The Dynamics Of Correctional Policy, John Ursino May 2026

Crowding, Capacity, And Reform: Exploring The Dynamics Of Correctional Policy, John Ursino

Criminology and Criminal Justice Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines the dynamic mechanisms that drive correctional population change and evaluates strategies for sustainable decarceration. Despite widespread calls for evidence-based corrections, methodological tools such as time series analysis remain underutilized for understanding population management. This dissertation addresses this gap through a three-paper design that applies advanced time-series methods to key stages of the correctional continuum. Chapter Two uses interrupted time-series analysis to evaluate the impacts of both proactive (policy-driven) and reactive (COVID-19 and court mandate-related) decarceration events in Washington State on admissions, technical violations, and recidivism outcomes, clarifying how policy design affects prison admission flows. Chapter Three employs …

Carrying The Dream Forward: Intergenerational Hope And Academic Persistence Among Historically Underserved Caregiving Graduate Students, Deborah D. Gaspard

Educational Leadership Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

This qualitative study examined the lived experiences of eight graduate students who serve as caregivers, including those raising children and supporting elderly family members, and how these responsibilities complicate traditional forms of academic engagement. Despite a growing proportion of students with overlapping academic and caregiving roles, institutional structures remain largely oriented toward traditional students with minimal external obligations. Drawing on in-depth narratives, this study explored how caregiving demands shape students’ academic and social integration as well as how institutional policies and practices influence their persistence. Other research has shown that caregiving responsibilities significantly impact students’ time, energy, and access to …
