A Taxonomic And Ecologic Study Of The Riverbottom Forest On St. Mary River, Lee Creek, And Belly River In Southwestern Alberta, Canada, Robert K. Shaw
A Taxonomic And Ecologic Study Of The Riverbottom Forest On St. Mary River, Lee Creek, And Belly River In Southwestern Alberta, Canada, Robert K. Shaw
Great Basin Naturalist
The riverbottom forest community of St. Mary River, Lee Creek, and Belly River in southwestern Alberta, Canada, is a unique ecological entity characterized by poplar species having their major Alberta distribution along these streams. Stands in the community are dominated by three tree species, six shrub species, and nine herb species. Establishment of the community is dependent on climate and substrate; destruction is the result of progressive lateral stream-flow erosion. Soils are sandy loams above gravel, with pH values of 7.7 to 8.0 and soluble salt concentrations of 176 to 458 parts per million. Trees in mature stands averaged 23.0 …

The concept of topological or structural stability is introduced and its importance in the magnetic confinement of plasmas is discussed. Topological stability requires the presence of a pair of limit cycles in the magnetic field configuration. This paper deals with the design of an experimental device possessing limit cycles. The design includes a high beta (b=1), high density (10^16), hot (100 eV) hydrogen plasma which is to be compressed by a factor of about 5 in a torodial device of 25 cm average major radius with a capacitor bank rise time of less than 2 µsec. Two shaped toroidal coils …
Behavior Of A Manganin Coil At Elevated Temperatures And Pressures, Jonathan D. Weiss, Daniel L. Decker, H. B. Vanfleet
Behavior Of A Manganin Coil At Elevated Temperatures And Pressures, Jonathan D. Weiss, Daniel L. Decker, H. B. Vanfleet
Faculty Publications
We have determined the temperature dependence in the first-order pressure coefficient of a manganin coil to be dBetaB/dT= (4.2±0.8) ×10^-7 (kbar degrees C)^-1 in the equation R (T,P) =R (T,0)(1+BetaP+GammaP2), where R (T,P) is the coil resistance at temperature T and pressure P. The measurements were performed by simultaneously measuring the coil resistance and temperature at the transitions of mercury and bismuth, which were observed by differential thermal analysis.
Esr Study Of Free Radicals In Irradiated Single Crystals Of Potassium Hydroxylamine Disulfonate, B. J. Wilson, Robert W. Holmberg
Esr Study Of Free Radicals In Irradiated Single Crystals Of Potassium Hydroxylamine Disulfonate, B. J. Wilson, Robert W. Holmberg
Faculty Publications
Two free radicals formed when single crystals of potassium hydroxylamine disulfonate are irradiated with gamma rays at 77degrees K were studied by ESR. The ESR spectra result from a predominant center (radical A) exhibiting large 14N and 1H hyperfine splittings and from lesser amounts of Fremy's radical [O-dotN(SO3)2-2]. The g and hyperfine tensors of these radicals have been evaluated and are discussed. Radical A, whose identity remains in doubt, may be regarded as the precursor to Fremy's radical; on warming its lines decay and those of Fremy's radical are formed. Lines from radical A decrease in strength and those of …
The Intermolecular Potential And Vibrational Relaxation Of The Ar-Co System, Gregory Allen Parker
The Intermolecular Potential And Vibrational Relaxation Of The Ar-Co System, Gregory Allen Parker
Theses and Dissertations
The angle, distance and vibration dependence of the Ar-CO intermolecular potential is calculated using the electron gas model to obtain the short range interaction which is smoothly joined onto the long range van der Waals tail which is obtained from accurate C_6, C_7, and C_8 coefficients. Our calculated second interaction virial coefficients are compared with experiment and with a simple adjustment of the Ar-CO potential an excellent agreement is obtained. Our spherically averaged potential is also in excellent agreement with a spherical potential inferred from high energy scattering data. Simplified expressions for the scattering amplitude and differential cross section are …

A Comparison Of Free Radical Detection Methods, Danny Kiang-Wah Pan
Theses and Dissertations
The methods used for free radical detection are chemical titration, spectrophotometry, Gouy magnetic measurements and NMR shift technique. The free radicals chosen for this study are Fremy' s salt (ON(SO_3 )K_2),2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) 3-carbamoyl-2,2,5,5-tetramethylpyrrolidin-1-yloxy (CTM-pyrrolidin), 3-carbamoyl-2,2,5,5-tetramethyl-3-pyrrolin-1-yloxy (CTM-pyrrolin), 4-acetamido-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidino-1- oxyl (ATMP) and galvinoxyl. The detectable range for each method is given. The NMR method is a fast and convenient method for the magnetic susceptibility determination of a sample in solution, with. accuracy up to ± 1%.
A Potentiometric Method, A Convenient And Rapid Technique For Determination Of The Thermodynamics Of Ionization Reactions For Water, Weak Acids, And Some Slightly Soluble Salts In Aqueous Organic Mixed Solvents, Charanai Panichajakul
Theses and Dissertations
A potentiometric method which is devised to be rapid and convenient for determining ionization constants for water, weak acids (or bases), and certain solids in mixed solvents is described. The method has been applied to the determination of ionization for water, acetic acid, benzoic acid, and phenol and the solubility product constant for silver chloride in mixtures of water with methanol, ethanol, acetone, tetrahydrofuran, and p-dioxane containing from 0 to 70 mass percent organic co-solvent at several temperatures between 10 and 40°C. Results are used to study the thermodynamics of ionization in each mixture which is discussed relative to various …
Solid-Liquid Phase Equilibria In Systems Of (I) Para-Xylene, (Ii) Mesitylene, And (Iii) N,N-Dimethylformamide ; Excess Volume Determination In Systems Containing Cyclohexane ; Calculations Of Activities For The N-Hexane + Cyclohexane System, John F. Moellmer
Theses and Dissertations
Solid-liquid phase equilibria studies were used to investigate possible compolllld formation in solutions of (i) para-xylene, (ii) mesitylene, and (iii) N,N-dimethyl-formamide (DMF) with mono- and di- halobenzenes that were selected to give a wide range of acceptor properties. Solid 1:1 intermolecular compounds were identified from solutions of p-C_6H_4F_2 with mesitylene, p-C_6H_4Br_2 with p-xylene, and p-C_6H_4Cl_2 with p-xylene. The results suggest that compound formation occurs because of favorable geometry rather than a charge transfer process. A vibrating tube densimeter was used to determine, with high precision, the densities and subsequently excess volumes of mixing of the n-hexane plus cyclohexane system. Temperature …

Late Pleistocene–Early Holocene History Of Coniferous Woodlands In The Lucerne Valley Region, Mohave Desert, California, Thomas Jackson King Jr.
Late Pleistocene–Early Holocene History Of Coniferous Woodlands In The Lucerne Valley Region, Mohave Desert, California, Thomas Jackson King Jr.
Great Basin Naturalist
The composition of four radiocarbon-dated, late Pleistocene woodrat middens is reported and analyzed. A date of 11,850 ± 550 BP records the first reported macrofossil occurrence in this region of late Pleistocene Pinus monophylla-Juniperus osteosperma woodlands. A 7,800 ± 350 BP date documents the most recent J. osteosperma woodlands in this presently coniferless desert area, while a date of 12,100 ± 400 BP is the oldest record of juniper woodlands among the four middens. Other juniper and creosote bush desert flora radiocarbon dates along with six pollen profiles were obtained. The research suggests that as recently as 7,800 BP this …

SWITZERLAND AND HAWAII, at first glance, seem to have little to do with each other and any connection appears coincidental. A high government official in Honolulu recently was of that opinion and many would have readily corroborated his notions.

A Study Of Historical Evidences Related To Lds Church As Reflected In Volumes Xiv Through Xxvi Of The Journal Of Discourses, Terry J. Aubrey
Theses and Dissertations
The material in this study is a follow-up of a thesis done by Paul C. Richards entitled, "A Study of Evidences Related to LDS Church History as Reflected in Volumes I through XIII of the Journal of Discourse." That same basic format has been employed in treating the last thirteen volumes of the Discourses.
The Discourses contains addresses delivered by General Authorities of the LDS Church and others from 1854 to 1886. Until Richards did his thesis, no one had compiled an index of those volumes that dealt exclusively with history related to the LDS Church. This study …

Correlations Between Plant Species Diversity And Flower Characteristics In The Wasatch Mountains Of Utah And Idaho, William Kent Ostler
Correlations Between Plant Species Diversity And Flower Characteristics In The Wasatch Mountains Of Utah And Idaho, William Kent Ostler
Theses and Dissertations
An analysis of the relative abundance of the prevalent species in 25 major plant communities of the Wasatch Mountains demonstrates that variation in species diversity is significantly correlated with many floral characteristics. Wind pollinated flowers decrease in abundance while animal pollinated flowers increase along the diversity gradient. Both relationships are highly significant statistically. Color diversity and species diversity are significantly and positively correlated in open communities but are not correlated in forest communities. The percent sum frequency of yellow and pink-magenta flowers decreased with increasing species diversity while blue and whitish flowers increased. Also, zygomorphic flowers and flowers in which …

Fixation Of Dormant Tilletia Teliospores For Thin Sectioning, John Scott Gardner
Fixation Of Dormant Tilletia Teliospores For Thin Sectioning, John Scott Gardner
Theses and Dissertations
Dormant Tilletia caries teliospores in fixative solution or distilled water were frozen onto specimen chucks of an FTS Sorvall- Christensen frozen thin sectioner and cut or fractured at various temperatures (-20 to -75 C) and thickness settings (10, 15, 20, and 25 um). Cytoplasm of dormant spores was well preserved and organelles were found to differ from those of germinated spores in morphology. Irregular electron dense and electron opaque areas of lipid bodies were sometimes evident in dormant and germinating Tilletia caries teliospores. When dormant teliospores were sectioned in buffered fixative, lipids had an appearance similar to lipids in thin …

Steady-State Fluidics: Computer-Aided Analysis Of Analog Fluidic Circuits By Use Of Experimentally Determined Characteristic Curves, Raymond P. Martin Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
One of the fundamental tasks confronting engineers is the transmission and control of energy. The engineer, faced with this requirement and influenced by details of a specific, situation, his education and experience, and the customer's desires, will probably select a mechanical, electrical, or electro-mechanical system. Often a better choice exists—the use of a fluid power system. Fluid power systems employ pressurized fluids, liquids and/or gases, to transmit and control energy. Hydraulic systems use liquids, usually special oils or treated water. Pneumatic. systems use air or other gases. Both types are versatile and find a wide range of application.
