Geographical Characteristics Of Early Mormon Settlements, John Haws Baum Jan 1967

Geographical Characteristics Of Early Mormon Settlements, John Haws Baum

Theses and Dissertations

Considerable literature has been written about the Mormons and their settlement of the lands within the Great Basin; yet no one has produced a systematic study which analyzes the following geographical factors: What pattern of land occupancy was actually used by these early pioneers? Which physical characteristics determined the selection of a site for the Mormon village? What type of city survey pattern was instigated as towns were established along the eastern margin of the Great Basin? What was the relationship between the forts and the settlements in their lay-out patterns? As these questions were systematically analyzed new findings were …

Sources Of The American And Swiss Constitutions In Ancient Greek Political Thought, Thomas C. Gelzer Jan 1967

Sources Of The American And Swiss Constitutions In Ancient Greek Political Thought, Thomas C. Gelzer

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

Looking for a suitable subject for the Swiss-American Historical Society within the reach of a classicist, I found the question of the Ancient Greek Sources in the American Constitution. Although not a historian, I thought that would mean treating matters of historical significance as well as of unbroken continuance of the effects of classical thinking. In addition to that the Constitution is one of the living connections which links the mighty United States of America with the tiny Swiss Confederation. But, big or small, both nations have drawn continuously vital forces from the order of life which is shaped by …

Joys Of Discovery- Historical Research And Writing, Leroy R. Hafen Oct 1966

Joys Of Discovery- Historical Research And Writing, Leroy R. Hafen

BYU Studies

Brigham Young University history professor LeRoy Hafen lauds the merits of pursuing expertise in history, citing the thrill of discovery that historians feel when they uncover the facts. Hafen defines history as a cross between science and art—science because historians seek to find facts, art because the study of human behavior cannot always result in completely accurate discoveries. Additionally, history is an art because a historian must organize and retell the facts in an appealing way, striving for literary excellence as well as accuracy. Hafen describes the process of historical research, including making use of both primary and secondary sources …

Reminiscences Of A Trip To Cedar Breaks, G. Homer Durham Oct 1966

Reminiscences Of A Trip To Cedar Breaks, G. Homer Durham

BYU Studies

Reflecting on a time when automobile and horse-drawn travel overlapped, the Arizona State University president shares in this personal essay his memories of Mormon childhood growing up in southern Utah, particularly his reminiscences of taking trips up Parowan Canyon to get out of the summer heat. He describes unsuccessful attempts to summit Brian Head Peak in a Ford touring car, the trip being interrupted by herds of sheep blocking the road, and he reflects on a camping trip made by covered wagon. He compares his awe at seeing Cedar Breaks for the first time to Brigham Young’s inspiration when he …

Image And Generation: A Social-Psychological Analysis Of The Sino-Soviet Dispute, Stan A. Taylor, Robert S. Wood Apr 1966

Image And Generation: A Social-Psychological Analysis Of The Sino-Soviet Dispute, Stan A. Taylor, Robert S. Wood

BYU Studies

When this article was published in 1966, China and the Soviet Union were experiencing political friction, despite their previous friendship under Communism. Here the authors explain that to understand any international conflict, one must understand the perceptions and attitudes of those nations’ decision-makers. The authors reach into the past, examining the political atmospheres in each country at the time China’s and the Soviet Union’s leaders came of age. By doing so, they illustrating how China’s leaders developed an extremely xenophobic view of the world and why the Soviets did not. The authors also explain why the Soviets viewed their Chinese …

The Bridge, William L. Knecht Jan 1966

The Bridge, William L. Knecht

BYU Studies

This article examines a little-remembered piece of history that connects early members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints with Abraham Lincoln. In 1856, the steamboat Effie Afton crashed into a much-contested and newly completed railroad bridge over the Mississippi River. A lawsuit ensued, and Abraham Lincoln, who at the time was one of the premiere lawyers on the frontier, along with Norman Judd and Joseph Knox, defended the bridge owners. This, one of Lincoln’s most celebrated cases, had an impact on immigrating Mormons, for whom railroad bridges made westward travel considerably easier.

Meadow, Millard County, Utah: The Geography Of A Small Mormon Agricultural Community, Richard H. Jackson Jan 1966

Meadow, Millard County, Utah: The Geography Of A Small Mormon Agricultural Community, Richard H. Jackson

Theses and Dissertations

The agricultural village was the basis of the original economy of Utah established by the Mormon settlers, but it has since been supplanted in importance by the industrial and commercial activities of the large centers of the Wasatch Front counties of Salt Lake, Weber, and Utah. This study was conducted in an attempt to determine the future of those communities removed from industrialized northern Utah. The village of Meadow, Millard County, was chosen as an example and it was subjected to a detailed geographic analysis. From this analysis conclusions have been drawn regarding its future.

Estaunie's Naturalistic Period And Spiritual Period, Bertrand Logan Ball Jr. Jan 1966

Estaunie's Naturalistic Period And Spiritual Period, Bertrand Logan Ball Jr.

BYU Studies

French novelist Edouard Estaunie, popular in his country in the 1920s, is still of interest today. His career began with highly naturalistic novels, but by the end of his life, he was writing spiritual or metaphysical works. The author shows examples of these themes in Estaunie's writings, demonstrating that Estaunie's writings do showcase a change from emphasizing determinism to individual agency.

Drag Forces On Magnetically Accelerated Particles, Darrell Winterton Walker Sep 1965

Drag Forces On Magnetically Accelerated Particles, Darrell Winterton Walker

Theses and Dissertations

The object of this investigation was to determine the effect of acceleration on the drag of spheres as it differs from the steady state case. Steady state drag applies to the force acting on a single sphere moving at constant velocity through an infinite, continuous, incompressible, turbulence free fluid. Extensive experimentation has quite thoroughly documented the steady state drag characteristics of spheres. A dimensionless parameter associated with the drag force is sometimes used to correlate drag characteristics.

Heat Transfer In Shock Boundary Layer Interaction Regions, Rex W. Shumway Aug 1965

Heat Transfer In Shock Boundary Layer Interaction Regions, Rex W. Shumway

Theses and Dissertations

The interest in aerodynamic heating problems has been increasing rapidly in the last decade. This interest is no longer concentrated on the heating of simple shapes for which adequate heat transfer theory has been developed« Because of the increasing Mach number ranges of aircraft, the need for information on the aerodynamic heating of various components has become imperative. Only when the magnitude of the problem has been exposed can the design for reducing the severity of local heating be optimized. Definition of these problems is of interest, not only because of the flow phenomena, but because of possible design limitations …

The Investigation And Design Of A Powered, Single-Man Parawing Aircraft, Calvin J. Merrell Aug 1965

The Investigation And Design Of A Powered, Single-Man Parawing Aircraft, Calvin J. Merrell

Theses and Dissertations

During the last few years there has been an increasing interest in a high-lift wing configuration known as the flex-wing, or parawing. The parawing consists basically of a flexible membrane such as cloth, attached to two leading edges (or booms) and a keel as shown in Figure 1. At angles of attack () greater than the billowing angle (). the air impinges on the under side of the membrane and forces it into a double-arch shape at each cross-section. When straight leading edges are used, each arch approximates the shape of a conical section. A cylindrical section is obtained by …

Turbulent Flow In The Entry Region, Chin-Hsiu Li Aug 1965

Turbulent Flow In The Entry Region, Chin-Hsiu Li

Theses and Dissertations

When entering into the subject of turbulent flow, it is essential to understand that the kind of flow with which we deal belongs to a particular class known as shear flow. These types of flow comprise flow fields in which relative velocities have been induced by shear stresses rather than by the action of pressure forces. In pipe flow, when the fluid enters through the well-rounded bell from a reservoir or from the calm open air, a uniform velocity distribution occurs at the pipe entrance. Immediately down stream from the entrance of the pipe, the flow is structured with a …

The Vibration Response Of Laminated Orthotropic Plates, Max E. Waddoups Jr. Aug 1965

The Vibration Response Of Laminated Orthotropic Plates, Max E. Waddoups Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The behavior of anisotropic materials has been the object of much recent research® The high strength to weight ratio needed by aerospace structures has necessitated the use of exotic, composite materials which generally exhibit anisotropic behavior® These materials cannot be fully utilized unless analytical techniques are used which take maximum advantage of their anisotropic behavior.

Liquid Particle Interaction With A Normal Shock Wave, Victor George Forsnes Jul 1965

Liquid Particle Interaction With A Normal Shock Wave, Victor George Forsnes

Theses and Dissertations

The atomization of a liquid by an air stream has been an item of much concern in the past, and there have been numerous experimental studies of the process made in an effort to correlate liquid and air- stream physical properties into a general model which will predict the degree of and the time required for atomization for a given physical situation. The breakup of liquid drops, a major portion of the atomization process, finds application in the field of meteorology, where the formation, breakup, and shape of raindrops is an item of much concern; in the field of internal …

Residual Stresses And The Bauschinger Effect, Raymond M. Huebner Jun 1965

Residual Stresses And The Bauschinger Effect, Raymond M. Huebner

Theses and Dissertations

Within the last ten years there has been much interest in the field of elasto-plastic behavior of engineering materials. Hie recent popularity of the low-cost light-weight plastically designed structures has added a great deal of impetus to this interest. This thesis deals with one of the aspects of elasto-plastic behavior, namely, the distribution of the residual stresses in a simple member which has been plastically deformed in tension and/or compression,. In particular, an attempt has been made to relate these residual stresses to the well-known but little understood Bauschinger effect.

Residual Stress Distribution Changes During Dynamic Unidirectional Tensile Loading, Henry Swan Todd Jun 1965

Residual Stress Distribution Changes During Dynamic Unidirectional Tensile Loading, Henry Swan Todd

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years there has been much engineering effort channeled toward obtaining higher strength, lower weight and cost product designs. In pursuit of this goal some carefully designed and tested parts have catastrophically failed after a long history of repeated successful service, even though the load at the time of failure was no higher than the part had repeatedly carried previously. These mechanical failures are commonly classified as fatigue failures.
