A Survey And Assessment Of The Rare Vascular Plants Of The Idaho National Engineering Laboratory Site, Anita F. Cholewa, Douglass M. Henderson

Great Basin Naturalist

A two-year study of the rare vascular plants of the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory generated new data on the abundance, distribution, and habitat features of eight taxa presently under review at either the federal or state level, or recently proposed for such review. Astragalus ceramicus Sheld. var. apus Barneby is common on the INEL and adjacent areas and will be recommended for removal from further consideration at the federal level and placed on Idaho's Federal Watch List. Coryphanta missouriensis (Sweet) Britt. & Rose is common throughout east central Idaho, but will be recommended for retainment on the State Watch List. …

"Use And Abuse" In Romeo And Juliet, Maurice Hunt Jan 1984

"Use And Abuse" In Romeo And Juliet, Maurice Hunt

Quidditas

Near the midpoint of Romeo and Juliet, Friar Laurence formulates an authoritative-sounding concept which seemingly lends itself to interpreting tragedy. Gathering "baleful weeds" and "precious juiced flowers," the Friar states that everything earthly has a virtuous use and a potential abuse:

O, mickle is the powerful grace that lies

In plants, herbs, stones, and their true qualities.

For naught so vile that on the earth doth live

But too the earth some special good doth give;

Nor aught so good but, strain'd from that fair use,

Revolts from true birth, stumbling on abuse.

Virtue itself turns vice being misapplied, …

The Auction, Darrin Cozzens Jan 1984

The Auction, Darrin Cozzens

Inscape

The people came early on a cold day to look over the belongings of Elmer and Verna Turnitt. City husbands and wives walked the aisles of old household articles by a tar-papered shed, lingering and nodding when they found a antique for their collections. Farmers who came to buy kicked at the tires of the machinery or checked piles of chain for broken links or looked at the engine hour-meters of the tractors lined up. Older farmers in overalls and denim oats, there for the ritual of the thing, stood in small groups, smoking and spitting tobacco juice, clapping their …

Infitah And The Modernization Of Egypt, Chris Monson Jan 1984

Infitah And The Modernization Of Egypt, Chris Monson

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

At the secondary school, I came to realize for the first time what city dwellers were and what class officers meant. . . . My classmates were naturally better dressed than I was but I never suffered because of this. Many of my friends came from wealthy families and lived in luxurious houses, yet I cannot recall ever wishing to possess what they had. --Anwar el-Sadat

Hopping A Train, John Snyder Jan 1984

Hopping A Train, John Snyder

Inscape

Call me a vagrant. I think that's what Melville really wanted to say when he started Moby Dick. Conviction left him though , and he settled on "call me Ishmael," which is actually just another way of saying the same thing; if you are an Ishmael, likely you have been cast out and have little means of making a living. Whether for the original biblical figure or a Roger Williams , the situation can be difficult. ''He is a dangerous Ishmael," a leader of the Puritan community said of Williams after he had departed into the wilderness; "He turns all …

The Nonconformists Of Leeds In The Early Victorian Era: A Study In Social Composition, Susan L. Fales Jan 1984

The Nonconformists Of Leeds In The Early Victorian Era: A Study In Social Composition, Susan L. Fales

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examined the Nonconformist denominational membership in the Borough of Leeds during the early Victorian era to determine the social composition of its members. The chapel goers of Old Dissent, represented by the Unitarians, Baptists, Independents, and the Society of Friends, and New Dissent, represented by the Wesleyan Methodists, Methodist New Connexion, Primitive Methodists and the Mormons were the basis for this study. The results of the occupational, residential, family, and migration analysis revealed a surprisingly high percentage of working classes (72) represented among the Dissenters. This fact flys in the face of contemporary observation and historical investigation, which …

Marcus Lee Hansen: America's First Transethnic Historian, Moses Rischin Jan 1984

Marcus Lee Hansen: America's First Transethnic Historian, Moses Rischin

The Bridge

In a world in flux, the historian must strike a balance between change and tradition. The historian of American immigration and culture particularly sits poised on the knife's edge, seeking universal categories of analysis and understanding while immersing himself in a loving study of distinct peoples, places, and ways of life in disarray. He is the boomer engineer committed to democracy and equality, progress and growth, mobility and technology, science and medicine, individualism and freedom. But he is also the artist, priest, and guardian of culture, the admirer of fragile arts and crafts and tastes perfected over generations, of customs, …

Two-Dimensional Computer Modeling Of Joints And Fractures In Continua, Royd R. Nelson Dec 1983

Two-Dimensional Computer Modeling Of Joints And Fractures In Continua, Royd R. Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis presents a numerical formulation which incorporates the effects of joints, cracks, and fractures into a mathematical mode used to in an existing finite element code. Two separate crack definitions were incorporated, one involving a discrete crack model, and the other a continuum approach defining a new material with regularly spaced joints. Several examples are also presented demonstrating the use of this capability.

Development Of A Computer-Aided Graphics Capability To Display Field Test Data, L. Allen Adams

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis develops an interactive computer-aided graphics package for the display of experimental and field test data. EXPERT was developed to be used in conjunction with MOVIE.BYU and DISSPLA, utilizing a bivariate interpolation scheme to create a full field of data using the "sparse" field data as pivotal points. The usefulness and practicality of the program is demonstrated by graphically displaying the data from the Air Force Weapons Laboratory's CHEAT test.

Comparative Life History And Floral Characteristics Of Desert And Mountain Floras In Utah, Patrick D. Collins, Kimball T. Harper, Burton K. Pendleton Jul 1983

Comparative Life History And Floral Characteristics Of Desert And Mountain Floras In Utah, Patrick D. Collins, Kimball T. Harper, Burton K. Pendleton

Great Basin Naturalist

Life forms and floral characteristics of plants at Arches National Park (desert communities), the Mt. Nebo complex, and a subalpine meadow in the Uinta Mountains (montane and subalpine communities) were compared. Characteristics observed were (1) life form, (2) longevity, (3) pollination system, (4) flower structure, (5) flower symmetry, and (6) flower color. Common families in each flora were also compared. Results showed that there is a significant overrepresentation of shrub species at Arches, and an underrepresentation of perennial forbs. Relative number of perennial forb species was significantly higher at Mt. Nebo and the subalpine meadow than at Arches National Park. …

Plant And Soil Relationships In Two Hydrothermally Altered Areas Of The Breat Basin, N. M. Milton, T. L. Purdy Jul 1983

Plant And Soil Relationships In Two Hydrothermally Altered Areas Of The Breat Basin, N. M. Milton, T. L. Purdy

Great Basin Naturalist

In two areas of hydrothermally altered rocks in the Great Basin, the native vegetation differs in composition and areal cover from unaltered to altered sites on the same geologic formations. Analysis suggests that physical rather than chemical factors may be the cause of the vegetation differences, especially permeability of bedrock, depth and texture of soils, and, possibly, amounts and types of clay minerals present. These characteristics influence the ability of soils to absorb and retain water.

In the East Tintic Mountains, Utah, the soils from argillized or mixed argillized and silicified parent materials have more characteristics associated with dryness and …

Development Of A Computer-Aided Analysis Package For Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics, William E. Warkentin Apr 1983

Development Of A Computer-Aided Analysis Package For Linear Elastic Fracture Mechanics, William E. Warkentin

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis develops an interactive computer-aided analysis package for solving linear elastic fracture mechanics problems. CHILES 2 (an existing finite element fracture mechanics program) was modified to be interactive. The modified program is named CHILES.BYU and is used in conjunction with QMESH.BYU and MOVIE.BYU to form the total software package. An analysis of glass ceramics and glass ceramic/metal interfaces was performed demonstrating the capabilities of the package. This study demonstrates the usefulness of an interactive package of computer programs to allow an engineer to rapidly investigate different crack configurations.

Scrubs.Byu A Two Dimensional Finite Element Package For Continuum Analysis Using Quadratic Isoparametric Elements, Michael Glenn Long

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis develops a two dimensional, axisymmetric finite element package for solving continuum problems including rubbleization subsidence and nonlinear fracture mechanics. This package includes both a user friendly preprocessor, PRESCRUBS.BYU, and a versatile analysis code SCRUBS.BYU. PRESCRUBS.BYU systematically creates the data file necessary to run SCRUBS.BYU. SCRUBS.BYU provides many options of nonlinear static analysis using either linear or quadratic isoparametric finite elements. Sample problems are presented that demonstrate the capabilities of this package.

Pronghorn Responses To Hunting Coyotes, Timothy D. Reynolds Jan 1983

Pronghorn Responses To Hunting Coyotes, Timothy D. Reynolds

Great Basin Naturalist

Six accounts of pronghorn antelope (Antilocapra americana) chasing or attacking coyotes (Canis latrans) are described: three chases by individual pronghorn does, two by herds of antelope, and one joint effort by a pronghorn doe and a Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus). Modifications of Berger's (1979) ungulate antipredatory defense model are proposed.
