In 1847 the Mormon pioneers arrived in the Salt Lake valley, bringing with them their own court system, which was to be their main resource for litigation for the next two years. The Church courts which were set up after 1847 proved insufficient, and in 1849 a need was felt for civil courts which could be used in the litigation with Gentile emigrants that were passing through the valley. To solve this problem, the State of Deseret was formed on March 12, 1849, giving the valley a civil authority. This was to last less than two years, for on September …

The Photoreduction Of Indigo Carmine Flavin Mononucleotide And Diphosphopyridine Nucleotide, By Illuminated Chloroplasts, M. Odell Hobbs

An investigation was made of the photoreduction of indigo carmine dye and flavin mononucleotide (FMN) by an illuminated sugar beet leaf homogenate in the presence of 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol dye (DPIP) and ascorbic acid. DPIP and ascorbate were absolutely required for the reaction. Reconstitution experiments indicated a requirement for a heat-labile factor present in the supernatant fluid following centrifugation of the leaf homogenate. This factor activated the photoreduction of indigo carmine more than 20 times. The photoreduction of FMN was activated 2 times by this factor. Studies on the stoichiometry of indigo carmine photoreduction revealed that one mole of ascorbate was photooxidized …

It is the writer's opinion that deviation from temple marriage in the Mormon culture brings to bear a direct and indirect social pressure so strong that it effects deviation in other areas of the culture. This contention is partly borne out by a tested hypothesis that "Members within the Latter-day Saint Church who were married in the temple would have characteristic patterns of behavior which would differ from patterns of behavior of those members who were married by a Church official or by a civil authority". This hypothesis was tested mainly with respect to behavior after marriage.

No formalized philosophical system has officially represented the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to this time. Some claim there is need for one while others believe that none is forthcoming or necessary. Let the question be argued elsewhere. It is to be observed that metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, aesthetics, and science are all essentially represented in mormonism and should at least be recognized in comparison with their kind.

The majority of critics who have opposed the Book of Mormon have claimed the book is the product of one man because of the uniformity of style throughout. If these charges were true, Joseph Smith's claim of divine origin for the book and its contents would be in jeopardy.

Studies have shown Semitisms, enallage, and constructions amidst the Book of Mormon writings which seem to indicate that it is a fairly literal translation. If it is such, style differences among the writers should be evident to some degree.

From earliest days, Utah Territory was the scene of violent disagreement between federal officers and Mormon citizens. By 1857 returning officers reported that a rebellion existed in Utah. On the strength of these reports, President Buchanan appointed Alfred Cumming as Governor and dispatched Albert S. Johnston's army to install the new executive. Johnston's army started late and had not arrived in Salt Lake City by autumn. The Mormons further delayed the expedition until winter snows forced Johnston to encamp at Fort Bridger.

During the years 1950-51 work was begun on a study of the Coleoptera by the author. In 1955, due to the lack of a workable set of keys to the Coleoptera of Utah, a study was undertaken to find a way to more easily classify the beetles of the state to their respective families. The collection of Brigham Young University was used as the basis for determining the families of beetles actually found in Utah. After making a study of the pre-railroad Utah mail service, I have found it appropriate to categorize certain broad elements. This thesis is divided into eight parts, each part following in chronological order except for the one dealing with the Pony Express and the telegraph. Which covers approximately the same period of time as the chapter entitled "Resumption of the Mail." Though there was a most definite overlapping of time for these two historical phases, it would seem that there was adequate justification for making two chapters.

The objectives of this study were: (1) to make a detailed study of the distribution of the genus Parognathus in Utah; (2) to determine if any species or races not now recorded occur in the state; (3) to bring together notes on life histories of this genus, both from the literature and field studies; and (4) to determine habitat preferences of the species represented. This paper lists 14 subspecies belonging to 7 species of Perognathus occurring in Utah. A study of the photo-oxidation of the 2,6-dichlorophenol indophenol-ascorbic couple was undertaken with a view to investigating the postulated mechanism of oxidation by a component of the oxygen evolving sequence operative in photosynthesis. A spectrophotometric method for the measurement of the progress of photo-oxidation was developed. Temperature and pH dependence were determined and the effect of various common inhibitors and physiological substances tested. None of the common Hill reaction inhibitors were effective in the ascorbic acid photo-oxidation in the system used. KCN and catalase as well as a few other high molecular weight proteins were able to inhibit dark auto-oxidation …

The purpose of this study was to determine the kinds, population, distribution, and general habits of the mammals of the Lynndyl sand dune area. Only one article concerning the dunes was found, but several have been written on other dunes; however, none was found concerning mammals. Two quantitative studies, plot and transect trappings, were made and general observations were taken within the study area. Three types of plots; Russian thistle, juniper, and baren moving dunes; were trapped and revealed the following species: Dipodomys ordii, Peromyscus maniculatus, Reithrodontomys megalotis, Onychomys leucogaster, and Neotoma lepida. An observation of literature extant regarding the revelations accepted by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as being divinely given through Joseph Smith, discloses that the field has not been probed very thoroughly. Many are the sermons and discourses preached from the pulpit by exegetes of Mormonism vindicating the book of Doctrine and Covenants as being authentic. Few, however, have made a study of the history, origin, and development of this book.
