The Aquatic Plants Of Central Utah And Their Distribution, Gerald E. Bessey May 1960

The Aquatic Plants Of Central Utah And Their Distribution, Gerald E. Bessey

Theses and Dissertations

It was the purpose of this study to determine what aquatic plants were common to central Utah and to outline the ecological factors that control their distribution. The main emphasis throughout has been upon the more macroscopic aquatic plants. Such algae were included as was warranted by their size,, abundance and importance in the various habitats in which they grew. As this study progressed it became evident that there was a need for a broad survey-type study of the aquatic plants that would include essentially all of the wet lands of the central Utah region. The area of study closely …

Blanco-Fombona And Hispanic Cultural Unity, Ernest J. Wilkins

BYU Studies

The Venezuelan Blanco-Fombona championed the Hispanic cause. A writer of novels, short stories, poetry, essays, and editorials, and a critic, Blanco-Fombona worked for unity among the Hispanic nations and fought against "yankee imperialism." Reply To Professor Madsen's Critique, Sterling M. Mcmurrin Apr 1960

Reply To Professor Madsen's Critique, Sterling M. Mcmurrin

BYU Studies

Professor McMurrin responds to Truman G. Madsen's critique of his essay on Mormon metaphysics (found in BYU Studies 2:1 (1960):101-105). This is a continuation of the debate between Sterling M. McMurrin and Truman G. Madsen regarding Mormon theology. Here McMurrin defends his statements: that Mormonism contains both realistic and nominalistic tendencies on priesthood, that Mormon value philosophy exhibits platonic character, that Mormonism is tritheistic, and that foreknowledge and free will are not contradictory.

The Political Kingdom Of God As A Cause For Mormon-Gentile Conflict, Klaus Hansen Apr 1960

The Political Kingdom Of God As A Cause For Mormon-Gentile Conflict, Klaus Hansen

BYU Studies

One cause for the problems between Mormons and their Gentile neighbors in the early Church was the political kingdom of God. Early members of the Church of Jesus Christ felt a responsibility to establish a temporal kingdom in preparation for the kingdom Christ would establish at his second coming. Misunderstandings about the nature of the kingdom of God on earth between Church members and those outside the Church contributed to the persecutions and eventual expulsions from Missouri and Illinois as well as to the martyrdom of Joseph Smith. Those outside the Church suspected Church leaders of plotting to overthrow the …

The Dead Sea Scrolls–Qumran Calmly Revisited, Lewis M. Rogers Apr 1960

The Dead Sea Scrolls–Qumran Calmly Revisited, Lewis M. Rogers

BYU Studies

At the time of their discovery, the Dead Sea scrolls, like any major archeological find, were a cause for controversy. This article briefly discusses the history of the scrolls' discovery and outlines the contents of the Qumran library. Scholars agree that the authors of the scrolls were probably Essenes, a group that saw themselves as the new Israel in the desert, teaching a pure form of Judaism and awaiting the imminent end of the world. A number of parallels exist between the Qumran community and the early Christian church, including their name, organization, ordinances, and teleological language. However, there are …

Joseph Smith And The West, Hyrum L. Andrus Apr 1960

Joseph Smith And The West, Hyrum L. Andrus

BYU Studies

As early as 1834, Joseph Smith saw the Church's eventual settlement in the Rocky Mountains. Many contemporary accounts, from members of the Church and others including Governor Ford of Illinois, tell of Joseph's prophecies and plans to move westward. In March 1844, Joseph organized a General Council, or the Council of Fifty, whose immediate responsibility was to plan the Saints' exodus. In the last few months of his life, Joseph was increasingly focused on the journey to the Great Basin. After the martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith, the General Council, led by Brigham Young, made preparations for the Saints' …

A Study Of The Doctrinal Significance Of Certain Textual Changes Made By The Prophet Joseph Smith In The Four Gospels Of The Inspired Version Of The New Testament, Robert J. Matthews Jan 1960

A Study Of The Doctrinal Significance Of Certain Textual Changes Made By The Prophet Joseph Smith In The Four Gospels Of The Inspired Version Of The New Testament, Robert J. Matthews

Theses and Dissertations

The several versions and revisions of the Bible in existence precipitate questions concerning the reliability of many Biblical texts. Each of these versions has an amount of variation from the others, yet all were done my men of accepted scholarship.
Joseph Smith also made a Bible revision, or as he termed it, a "translation," using a King James Version printed in 1828 as the basis. This amended King James Version, although not fully completed, has been published under the title of the Inspired Version of the Holy Scriptures, by the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
This thesis …

A Study Of Selected Factors Which Influence Latter-Day Saint And Non-Latter-Day Saint Students To Attend The Church College Of Hawaii, Daniel G. Witt

Theses and Dissertations

The object of this study is to examine some of the influences associated with the decisions of Latter-day Saint and non-Latter-day Saint students to attend The Church College of Hawaii. Social scientists have found that an important aspect of any decision situation is a person's orientation to that situation. Such orientations may often have their basis in the child's early relationships with his parents.

Fred T. Dubois, Foe Of The Mormons: A Study Of The Role Of Fred T. Dubois In The Senate Investigation Of The Hon. Reed Smoot And The Mormon Church, 1903-1907, Jay R. Lowe Jan 1960

Fred T. Dubois, Foe Of The Mormons: A Study Of The Role Of Fred T. Dubois In The Senate Investigation Of The Hon. Reed Smoot And The Mormon Church, 1903-1907, Jay R. Lowe

Theses and Dissertations

In the year of 1903, the right of Reed Smoot to take his seat in the United States Senate was challenged in a protest signed by nineteen prominent citizens from Utah. The protest was submitted to the Senate Committee of Privileges and Elections, a member of which was Fred T. Dubois, Senator from Idaho. The protest charged that the Mormon Church was still practicing polygamy and exercising political domination of its members and that therefore Reed Smoot, an Apostle and leader of this church, was unfit for senatorial obligations. Dubois, believing the worst concerning these charges, took it upon himself …

The Role And Function Of The Seventies In Lds Church History, James N. Baumgarten Jan 1960

The Role And Function Of The Seventies In Lds Church History, James N. Baumgarten

Theses and Dissertations

Joseph Smith organized a group called Seventies in the Mormon Church early in 1835. They are one of three primary groups in the Higher or Melchizedek Priesthood. They were said to be Elders with a special calling to preach the Gospel among the nations of the earth. Their calling was said to be apostolic because they were to assist the Twelve Apostles in preaching the Gospel and administering Church affairs under their direction. They were a general Church Quorum, and not considered a part of stake organization.

The Seventies were established in their calling as missionaries in the time of …

Hebrew Idioms In The Small Plates Of Nephi, E. Craig Bramwell

Theses and Dissertations

The problem of this thesis is: To determine whether there are Hebraic idioms in the Small Plates of Nephi in the Book of Mormon that have been retained in translation. An idiom is defined as any peculiar genius of the language: grammatical, syntactical, or verbal imagery. Non-Hebraic idioms were not considered.
The assumptions underlying the problem are:
1. The Book of Mormon is a record of the Nephites whose cultural, social, and lingual milieu originated in Israel.
2. The Book of Mormon was originally written according to a Hebrew pattern of thought and communication.
3. Joseph Smith, as a young …

A History Of The Manti Temple, Glen R. Stubbs Jan 1960

A History Of The Manti Temple, Glen R. Stubbs

Theses and Dissertations

The history of the Manti temple, in a sense, began the first winter the Mormon Pioneers spent in Sanpete Valley. Because of the extreme cold they move to "temple hill" for protection. This same hill later became the site of the temple.

It had been predicted by Heber C. Kimball that a temple would someday be built on this spot. By 1873 plans were being made to this end. Preparations for construction were soon in progress and on April 25, 1877, the site was dedicated by President Brigham Young.

Bionomics Of Culex Tarsalis Coquillett In Utah County, Stanley K. Taylor

Theses and Dissertations

This paper presents information concerning the bionomics of Culex tarsalis Coquillett in Utah County. Observations indicate that rock piles and talus slides are typical hibernation sites. The spring emergence from hibernation occurred between 28 March and 7 April 1959. Larvae breed in a great variety of habitats, including street-gutters, animal tracks, marshes and waste water from irrigation systems. The peak population density for both larvae and adults occurred during the first week in August. Charts, graphs, drawings and photographs are used in the presentation of data.

An Approach To Modernity In Art, Gerrit De-Jong Jr. Apr 1959

An Approach To Modernity In Art, Gerrit De-Jong Jr.

BYU Studies

Writing to defend modern art, the author first discusses some of the prejudiced and false assumptions made by people when they hear the word modern in connection with artistic expression. Every artistic age, whether in regard to painting or music, dance or literature, interior design or architecture, has been modern to those who experienced it, and even today's classics were often met with skepticism in their time. Accustomed to established norms, audiences and consumers of art are not certain how to respond to new conventions set forth in modern artistic works. Looking at the beauty of form rather than the …

The Second American Revolution: Era Of Preparation, Hyrum L. Andrus

BYU Studies

An Analysis Of The Development And Use Of Objectives For The Seminary Teachers In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, John Paul Fugal Jan 1959

An Analysis Of The Development And Use Of Objectives For The Seminary Teachers In The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, John Paul Fugal

Theses and Dissertations

The literature on educational problems and procedures gives considerable emphasis to objectives. Sometimes called aims, goals, or values, the objectives have been variously formulated according to the philosophy and environment of their authors. Great variation is found in the many codes of objectives which have existed and which now are used in education.

In examining the code of general objectives which has been published and circulated throughout the Latter-day Saint Seminary System since 1943, the writer was of the opinion that these objectives were not fully used by the seminary teachers and that they may not be those really desired …

Brigham Young's Philosophy Of History, H. Carleton Marlow Jan 1959

Brigham Young's Philosophy Of History, H. Carleton Marlow

Theses and Dissertations

"Brigham Young's Philosophy of History" attempts to describe how Brigham Young gave order and unity to the hubbub and confusion in which man lived. The laws which gave form and pattern to the baffling, diverse phenomena of and around man receive major attention. This thesis is an expository type of writing rather than an evaluation of Brigham Young's ideas and principles or laws in reference to other philosophies of history, Latter-day Saint theology, the modern natural exact sciences, or in reference to the current views of his times. This thesis is limited to a digestion of Brigham Young's works in …

The Theory And Practice Of The Political Kingdom Of God In Mormon History, 1829-1890, Klaus J. Hansen Jan 1959

The Theory And Practice Of The Political Kingdom Of God In Mormon History, 1829-1890, Klaus J. Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

The history of Mormonism reveals that almost from its beginning, the new church was to be not only a basis for an ecclesiastical Kingdom of God but for a temporal Kingdom as well. This temporal Kingdom, never fully realized, was to develop into a political state preparatory to the inauguration of the Apocalyptic Kingdom. Ultimately, this Kingdom was to rule the whole world.

Theory and practice did not always merge in the organization and administration of this Kingdom. When Joseph Smith organized the nucleus of a political government for the Kingdom of God in 1844 it became rather obvious that …

A Comparative Study And Evaluation Of The Latter-Day Saint And "Fundamentalist" Views Pertaining To The Practice Of Plural Marriage, Dean C. Jessee

Theses and Dissertations

Since the issuance of the Manifesto by President Wilford Woodruff on September 25, 1890, discontinuing the practice of plural marriage by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, intensive efforts have been made by dissenters to show that authority to practice polygamy has secretly continued to the present day. Claiming that the Church departed from its original teachings when it discontinued the practice of plural marriage and that the Manifesto was adopted merely as an act of appeasement, "fundamentalists" have attempted to show that the doctrine of plural marriage was revealed to the Latter-day Saints as an irrevocable decree, …
