Secondary Reactions And Partial Rate Factors In The Sulfonation Of Chlorobenzene And Toluene, Ernest Arthur Brown

The sulfonation of chlorobenzene, chlorobenzene-benzene, and toluene-benzene mixtures by sulfur trioxide in liquid sulfur dioxide at -12.5° C. was studied to obtain isomer distribution and relative rate data. The isomer distribution for the reaction on chlorobenzene was determined by an isotope dillution technique. Relative rate experiments were conducted by sulfonating C14 labeled benzene in competition with nonradioactive chlorobenzene and toluene and the count rate of the products was used to determine product composition. Ultraviolet spectrophotometry was also used to investigate variations in isomer distributions as a function of sulfur trioxide concentration. Predation by thrips was referred to as early as 1882 when Pergande discussed their habits. Later, Plank (1936) found Leptothrips mali (Fitch) to be predaceous on lepidopterous eggs, and Sharp (1938) cited it as a being a predator of the pecan nut caseborer, Acrobasis caryae Grote. Bailey (1939) stated that the six-spotted thrip, Scolothrips sexmaculatus (Pergande), is predaceous on Tetranychus telarius (L.), Tetranychus pacificus McG., Bryobia praetiosa Koch, Paratetranychus citri McG., Paratetranychus pilosus (C & F.), Paratetranychus indicus Hirst, Paratetranychus yothersi (McG.), Paratetranychus ilicis (McG.), and Phyllocoptes oleivorus Aschm. and in 1943 Bailey and Keifer noted that L. mali fed …

The effect of the fusion welding process upon the metals being welded is a matter of great interest and has been the subject of much investigation, both theoretical and experimental. The properties of metals are determined by the structure of their crystals (within limits for any given metal), and the crystalline structure is determined by heating and cooling rates. Thus the knowledge of temperatures, and heating and cooling rates, becomes the key to understanding these effects of heating. This study attempts to trace the efforts of the Mormon people to obtain redress from the national government for the losses of life and property which they had suffered and the hardships which they had endured while residing in the state of Missouri during the 1830's. The Mormon appeals to Congress and the President are considered and an evaluation is made of the Mormon view of the national government's responsibility for the protection of individual rights.

Whenever a public school modifies its scheduling program it has a direct effect upon any released-time program affiliated with the school. The purpose of this study was to test the follow null hypotheses:
1. There are no differences between boys and girls in religious attitudes and religious activity.
2. There are no differences in students' religious attitudes related to the priesthood and religious activity status of the fathers.
3. There are no differences in students' religious activity related to the priesthood and religious activity status of the fathers.
4. There is no relationship between a student's religious attitudes and his religious activity.

In an effort to cope with forces which would remove the home from its place of influence, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently inaugurated the Family Home Evening Program. Emerging out of a fifty year history of efforts to institute the home evening practice, it is one of the most systematic and comprehensive efforts to date to implement change within the structure of its member families.

Such a deliberate and predetermined effort toward improving the family system constitutes what applied social scientists call "planned change." Home evening, when adopted, has many of the elements of a behavior …

This thesis contains an analysis of the concept of Zion as reflected in the songs sung by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The following definitional areas within Zion concept are considered:
1. Zion: A personal spiritual condition.
2. Zion: A perfect society.
3. Zion: Various geographical locations.
4. Events included in the concept of Zion.

Each of the above areas is analyzed first, from a historical and doctrinal viewpoint and finally, as to how it is reflected in the songs of the Mormons.

After having been elected to Congress from Idaho's Second Congressional District in 1960 by a record vote, and re-elected in 1962, Democrat Ralph Harding was defeated in 1964 by Republican George Hansen in the face of a national Democratic landslide. The objective of this thesis was to analyze the Harding-Hanson contest and attempt to identify the factors which produced the Hansen victory. Tristram Shandy And The Comedy Of Context, George P. Landow

Columbia University literature professor George P. Landow uses Laurence Sterne’s 1750s series of novels, The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman, to illustrate how communication takes place. Refuting the idea that language can only convey ideas between two people when both speakers agree on what a word denotes, Landow highlights the comedy—and communication—that takes place in Sterne’s novels when characters infer meaning by what words connote. Landow writes that literature “often communicates not by denotation but by the indirect definition the context of a dramatic situation provides.”

A Geographic View Of The Sino-Soviet Dispute, Alan H. Grey, Russell N. Horiuchi

This article looks at the impact geographical area has on the Sino-Soviet conflict. Although China and the Soviet Union have similar ideologies, both countries’ imperialist drives makes expanding borders inevitable. In addition, China’s geographical deficiencies—the small proportion of land suitable for agricultural development—and its growing population put pressure on the Chinese government to look elsewhere for resources to sustain its people. In this context, border conflicts are inevitable despite common ideologies.
