Removing Impediments To Water Markets, B. Delworth Gardner
Removing Impediments To Water Markets, B. Delworth Gardner
Faculty Publications
A few years ago it was mostly economists, notably those of a libertarian stripe who were advocating voluntary market exchanges of water in the West. Now these exchanges, or transfers as they are sometimes referred to, are being unabashedly recommended by water users, politicians, bureaucrats, and even environmental organizations, who have come to see their value for achieving a more efficient water allocation. Water markets are an idea whose time has finally arrived.

Making It At The Smithsonian, Walter Angst

Once I had a job at the Smithsonian Institution, I had to wait a whole year until my position opened, in January of 1968, and even then my position had first to be approved by Congress as at that time there was a hiring-freeze. I got hired as a "specialist for restoration" with Exhibits. We were a department of two people out of about 800. In order to justify my grade, I passed a mid-level exam, which was rather tough, as it was meant to be administered to generals, admirals, high level administrators, and Ph.Ds. Gordon, my supervisor, had difficulties …

My very first job was with a cabinet-maker called Marx, who had a tiny shop on 6th and K streets in Washington, D.C. He had three other young fellows working for him, one of whom spoke French. He could explain things to me. But coming from precision-minded Switzerland, I was not used to the sloppy ways these guys were doing cabinet work. And when I witnessed how they felt perfectly at ease banging an actual nail between the fence on a circular saw and the body of its grooved (metal) table, I was horrified. After three days I quit.
A Letter Of Johann Grob Of St. Imier To His Parents, Written In Jersey City On June 10, 1866, Johann Grob
A Letter Of Johann Grob Of St. Imier To His Parents, Written In Jersey City On June 10, 1866, Johann Grob
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
Ms. Elisabeth Fowler of Oak Park, Illinois, found Johann Grob's letter among her family papers. "I have never heard how we got the copy over here," she wrote, "but we did have a cousin (in my father's generation or maybe a bit older) who used to go back and forth to Switzerland." Although it is not known who has translated the 3 document nor where the original might be, the letter sounds authentic and reports valuable details about Grob's ocean crossing and his first weeks in the United States.

Tomorrow's Research Library: Vigor Or Rigor Mortis?, Richard Hacken
Faculty Publications
The gamut of futuristic visions in library literature—from optimistic to pessimistic, from realistic to fanciful. Contradictory answers to recurring questions are found: Can we finally say goodbye to Gutenberg? Will the library card be replaced by the telephone credit card? Will book ownership give way entirely to information access. Will "books without pages" and "libraries without walls" necessarily lead to librarians without jobs? Is it possible to set timetables? After past crystal ball gazers are compared, contrasted, and critiqued, positive plans for progress are suggested.

Foods And Weights Of The Rock Ptarmigan On Amchitka, Aleutian Islands, Alaska, William B. Emison, Clayton M. White
Great Basin Naturalist
We examined the crop contents from 129 Rock Ptarmigan (Lagopus mutus) collected between 1967 and1971 on Amchitka, Aleutian Islands, Alaska. On a yearly basis two plant species, Empetrum nigrum and Equisetum arvense, made up 87% of the diet. Only in July and August were they less than 90% of the diet, and in those months they constituted 65% of the diet. During the warmer months (May-October) when a variety of plant species were available, the Amchitka ptarmigan fed upon growth forms of plants high in nutritive value (particularly Equisetum strobili). Its main winter food was the …

Genus Flexamia: New Species, Phylogeny, And Ecology, Robert F. Whitcomb, Andrew L. Hicks
Genus Flexamia: New Species, Phylogeny, And Ecology, Robert F. Whitcomb, Andrew L. Hicks
Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs
Eight new species of Flexamia DeLong are described, and two Mexican species previously synonymized are reinstated. Species are assigned to 13 species groups; keys are presented for the groups and for the 44 recognized species. Host data, in many cases with oligophagy coefficients, are presented for 37 of the species. Many species specialize on native, dominant, perennial, choridoid or panicoid grasses; some are monophagous. Seven sister species pairs specialize on the same (or a closely related) grass species; in addition, four closely related species appear to be restricted to Bouteloua curtipendula. Few if any specialists colonize their host throughout …

Dynamic Display And Quantitative Analysis Of Three-Dimensional Left Ventricular Pathology, William A. Barrett, Jayaram K. Udupa
Dynamic Display And Quantitative Analysis Of Three-Dimensional Left Ventricular Pathology, William A. Barrett, Jayaram K. Udupa
Faculty Publications
Techniques have been developed for automated extraction and dynamic interactive display of three-dimensional (3D) left ventricular (LV) surface anatomy from Cine CT images using a PC-based image display architecture. Images of both endocardial and myocardial surface anatomy are generated from multiple views at multiple time instances to demonstrate various LV pathologies including apical akinesis, apical and posterior aneurysms, LV Failure, IHSS, and a left atrial myxoma. Surface generation requires interpolation between scans, surface tracking, and rendering. Generation of 60 views corresponding to a single time instance requires approximately 15 minutes. LV dimensions are measured between two or more surface points …

Arboreal Arthropod Community Structure In An Early Successional Coniferous Forest Ecosystem In Western Oregon, T. D. Showalter, S. G. Stafford, R. L. Slagle
Great Basin Naturalist
This study was designed to characterize arboreal arthropod community structure in an early successional coniferous ecosystem. We sampled six-year-old snowbrush (Ceanothus velutinus Dougl. ex Hook) and Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) at the H. J. Andrews Experimental Forest in western Oregon during 1982. The arthropod fauna was dominated in terms of densities by psyllids and aphids on snowbrush and by adelgids and cecidomyiids on Douglas-fir. Significant associations among taxa, e.g., positive correlation between aphids and ants, indicated trophic interactions or similar responses to host conditions. Significant seasonality was observed for individual taxa and for the community, reflecting the …

Rozella Pearl Beverly Blood Smith, 1911–1987, Hobart M. Smith
Great Basin Naturalist
The life, activities, and contributions of an energetic, catholic woman scholar, Rozella B. Smith, are reviewed. Her pioneer innovations in bibliographic data retrieval and mapping by use of the computer, creating a permanent niche for her in the annals of herpetology, are emphasized. A list of her publications is included.
A Fourth New Sauropod Dinosaur From The Upper Jurassic Of The Colorado Plateau And Sauropod Bipedalism, James A. Jensen
A Fourth New Sauropod Dinosaur From The Upper Jurassic Of The Colorado Plateau And Sauropod Bipedalism, James A. Jensen
Great Basin Naturalist
The new sauropod, Cathetosaurus lewisi, is named and assigned to the Camarasauridae; it was collected from the Upper Jurassic Morrison Formation in western Colorado in 1967. Novel structural features of the skeleton in this genus, particularly in the axial skeleton, enabled it to assume and function to an unknown degree in a bipedal posture. Comparisons are made between C. lewisi and previously described sauropods. The following problems of sauropod locomotion are discussed; (1) sauropods lack two elements, sesamoids and patella, present in titanotheres; (2) sauropod limb and foot musculature, lacking leverage, is very inferior to that of titanotheres; (3) …
