Johannes Knudsen As An Educator: A Conversation With Harry Jensen, Thorvald Hansen Jan 1989

Johannes Knudsen As An Educator: A Conversation With Harry Jensen, Thorvald Hansen

The Bridge

In the fall of 1927 Johannes Knudsen began what was to be a lifelong teaching career. For the next eight years he was to teach at Grand View College and in the theological seminary there. He taught courses in Danish as well as in Scandinavian literature. In the Seminary his specialty was Church History. It was far from his first contact with Grand View. He had lived there as a youth, from 1912 until 1915, while his father was president of that institution. Later he attended the high school department there. In 1920, when his parents returned to Denmark, he …

The Theological Contributions Of Johannes V. Knudsen, Axel Kildegaard Jan 1989

The Theological Contributions Of Johannes V. Knudsen, Axel Kildegaard

The Bridge

"The glory of God is man fully alive." That quotation attributed to lreneus, Church father and first systematic theologian, is about 1800 years old. It affords a clue in my search for the common thread that runs throughout the seemingly diverse theological interests of Johannes V. Knudsen. The Celt, lreneus, Bishop of Lyons, who lived in the volatile second century when the Christian tradition was taking shape, wrote two significant works. One defined the basic Christian teachings, and the other, Against the Heresies, answered false teachings. These works spoke also to the interests of Bishop N.F.S. Grundtvig in 19th century …

Prophetic Messages Or Dogmatic Theology? Commenting On The Book Of Mormon: A Review Essay, Louis Midgley

Review of Books on the Book of Mormon 1989–2011

Review of Doctrinal Commentary on the Book of Mormon, Volume I: First and Second Nephi (1987), and Volume II: Jacob through Mosiah (1988), by Joseph fielding McConkie and Robert L. Millet.

The faith of the Nephites and the language of the Book of Mormon tends to be harmonized with certain contemporary statements about Mormon beliefs. The Book of Mormon should be more than a resource for theology. Rather than seeking confimation for what we already know, we should search for the meaning and message of the text.

Intertextuality In The Anglo-Norman Lyric, Carol J. Harvey Jan 1989

Intertextuality In The Anglo-Norman Lyric, Carol J. Harvey

Quidditas

The rhetorical formulae that permeate the poetry of the Middle Ages are not always used in a conventional or consistent manner. On the fringes of the main literary movements are works that raise doubts as to the very nature of medieval poetics. Some texts challenge accepted criteria with respect to genre, tone, or interpretation; others appear unfamiliar and heterogeneous in comparison with accepted poetic concepts; still others use the language and imagery of established poetics as a polemic strategy. Such problematic texts are found among the lyric poems composed in England during the Anglo-Norman era, particularly among the macaronics. These …

Treasonous Criticisms Of Henry Iv: The Loyal Poet Of Richard The Redeless And Mum And The Sothsegger, Diane A. Facinelli Jan 1989

Treasonous Criticisms Of Henry Iv: The Loyal Poet Of Richard The Redeless And Mum And The Sothsegger, Diane A. Facinelli

Quidditas

The merit of the Middle English alliterative poems Richard the Redelesss and Mum and the Sothsegger can be judged accurately only if they are approached as individual compositions. Ever since the Early English Text Society published the Mabel Day and Robert Steele edition of Mum and the Sothsegger in 1936, most scholars have uncritically accepted the single-poem theory these editors posited, regardless of how this adversely affected their analyses of the works. The argument for regarding Richard and Mum as fragments of one composition, begun in 1299 and finished sometime between 1403 and 1406, is, however, far less conclusive than …

Sir Thomas Heneage Of Hainton: A Henrician Gentleman, Narasingha P. Sil Jan 1989

Sir Thomas Heneage Of Hainton: A Henrician Gentleman, Narasingha P. Sil

Quidditas

The obscurity of Sir Thomas Heneage (c. 1480-1553) in early Tudor history presents a sharp contrast to the relative prominence of his nephew and namesake who served Queen Elizabeth as the vice-chamberlain of her household. Sir Thomas Heneage the Younger (c. 1532-1595), who left a fuller record of his activities, has naturally been given a more extensive treatment in the Dictionary of National Biography, which devotes less than half a column to the senior Heneage. The uncle can further boast of one printed page in Rev. Mr. Oates's account of the Heneage family. One of his letters was published …

Brigham Young's Indian Superintendency (1851-58): A Significant Microcosm Of The American Indian Experience, Wayne Miles Eckman Jan 1989

Brigham Young's Indian Superintendency (1851-58): A Significant Microcosm Of The American Indian Experience, Wayne Miles Eckman

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis provides a detailed study of Brigham Young's Indian superintendency within a framework of the federal Indian policy of his era. It focuses on Brigham Young's personal challenges and successes in instituting a conciliatory policy with the natives of the Great Basin. Experience taught Brigham Young that it was "cheaper to feed the Indians than to fight them." Brigham Young pursued his policy in spite of opposition from some Mormon constituents until finally his determination overruled pleas to forcibly remove the Indians from their lands.

Another important emphasis of the thesis is the personal interaction between Brigahm Young and …

The Relevance Of Our Heritage, Johannes Knudsen Jan 1989

The Relevance Of Our Heritage, Johannes Knudsen

The Bridge

Are the traditional fellowship values of the American Evangelical Lutheran Church of America, of Grand View College and the Folk Schools, viable today? This is the most important question facing us as a group, and it is expressed in our theme through the term "relevance." We must therefore ask what relevance means. According to the dictionary it means that something is "lifted up again" or that it "bears upon the matter at hand." When this definition is applied to personal or group values, it means that these values continue to be alive and important or that they are lifted out …

Competitive Fire: An Historical Descriptive Analysis Of Adherence To Traditional Journalistic Tenets In Television News Coverage Of The Mark Hofmann Salt Lake City Bombings, B. William Silcock

Theses and Dissertations

Television news contains factors of time constraints and deadlines that add pressures to the underlying rules of objectivity, fairness, and bias. This study seeks to determine if the elements of "responsible journalism" dissipate in television news coverage of a highly significant, developing news story. In other words, how well do the rules hold up under pressure? The momentous story selected for observation was the Mark Hofmann bombings in Salt Lake City, Utah. The focus centered on the coverage by local stations rather than the network television news operations.

A Key For Evaluating Nephite Geographies, John E. Clark Jan 1989

A Key For Evaluating Nephite Geographies, John E. Clark

Review of Books on the Book of Mormon 1989–2011

Review of Deciphering the Geography of the Book of Mormon (1988), by F. Richard Hauck.

The first question in dealing with Book of Mormon geography should be whether the geography first the facts of the Book of Mormon. Clark reconstructs an elemental geography and examines internal clues for distances between locations and the surrounding terrain. To evaluate geographies, Clark summarizes ten simple points having to do with the narrow neck of land, the coastlines, the wildernesses, the valleys, the rivers, a lake, and the relative locations of Zarahemla, Bountiful, Nephi, and Cumorah. Using these criteria, he evaluates the Sorenson and …

Frederick Barbarossa And The Lombard League: Imperial Regalia, Prescriptive Rights, And The Northern Italian Cities, David R. Carr Jan 1989

Frederick Barbarossa And The Lombard League: Imperial Regalia, Prescriptive Rights, And The Northern Italian Cities, David R. Carr

Quidditas

The struggle between Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and the Lombard League illustrates conflicts between not only imperial and municipal ambitions but also regalian and customary rights. The ability of the emperor to assert and to profit from regalian rights reflected the efficacy of imperial power. Conversely, the power of the Lombard city-states lay in the recognition of the validity of customary rights. While this conflict centers on the differing principles of Roman and "Germanic" law, the present study argues that the purported devotion of Barbarossa to Roman law and of the Italian communes to customary law misrepresents their positions. The Lombards' …

An Incentive-Based Wild Horse Management System On Public Rangeland, Ray G. Huffaker, James E. Wilen, B. Gardner Delworth Jan 1989

An Incentive-Based Wild Horse Management System On Public Rangeland, Ray G. Huffaker, James E. Wilen, B. Gardner Delworth

Faculty Publications

This paper explores an incentive-based management system to induce federal grazing permittees to choose sustained cattle stocking strategies which accommodate government-set wild horse numbers and nongrazing uses. Particular attention is paid to constraints imposed by federal grazing statutes. The proposed system employs increased livestock grazing fees to induce permittees to provide increased vegetation for consumption by wild horses and nongrazing uses. The negative impact of increased fees on permittee wealth is counterbalanced with compensatory transfer payments. Taken together, grazing fees and compensation payments induce multiple-use compliance by permittee-stewards and keep their discounted livestock profits intact at some predetermined level.

Creating A Shared History: Serial Narratives In The Young Woman's Journal, 1889-1894, Sherry Baker Dec 1988

Creating A Shared History: Serial Narratives In The Young Woman's Journal, 1889-1894, Sherry Baker

Faculty Publications

"Creating a Shared History: Serial Narratives in The Young Woman's Journal, 1889-1894" is a cultural press history and textual analysis of contemporary indigenous serial literature in a nineteenth-century Mormon young women's periodical. It tests press historian Catherine Covert's assertions that some of the functions of the press are (1) to be a conservator of values, and (2) to engender harmony and affiliation among community members. The investigator places the Journal within the historical/ cultural context from which it was written, and identifies specific messages in the serial narratives that encouraged the preservation of Mormon values and Mormon community affiliation. The …
