Book Review: A Very Civil War: The Swiss Sonderbund War Of 1842., Sabine Jessner Nov 1994

Book Review: A Very Civil War: The Swiss Sonderbund War Of 1842., Sabine Jessner

Swiss American Historical Society Review

The Sonderbund war of 1847 was, as the author convincingly demonstrates, "a very civil war." Unlike the later North American sectional conflict, Switzerland's regional strife lasted but twenty-five days and cost fewer than a hundred lives. Yet these statistics belie the rancor that divided the opposing parties, the more than 150,000 men under arms on both sides, and the very imminent danger of international involvement.

Soil And Vegetation Development In An Abandoned Sheep Corral On Degraded Subalpine Rangeland, James O. Klemmedson, Arthur R. Tiedemann Oct 1994

Soil And Vegetation Development In An Abandoned Sheep Corral On Degraded Subalpine Rangeland, James O. Klemmedson, Arthur R. Tiedemann

Great Basin Naturalist

Vegetation and soils inside and outside an abandoned sheep corral on degraded subalpine range of the Wasatch Plateau were studied to determine the influence of approximately 37 years' use of the corral on soil and plant development. Vegetal and surface cover were estimated. Herbage, litter, and soils were sampled inside and outside the corral and analyzed for Corg, N, P, and S. Soil pH, bulk density, and CO3–C also were measured. Storage (mass/unit area) of Corg, N, P, and S was determined for each component. Yield and vegetal composition were significantly affected inside the …

Habitat Preference And Diurnal Use Among Greater Sandhill Cranes, Donald E. Mcivor, Michael R. Conover Oct 1994

Habitat Preference And Diurnal Use Among Greater Sandhill Cranes, Donald E. Mcivor, Michael R. Conover

Great Basin Naturalist

We examined patterns of habitat use by Greater Sandhill Cranes (Grus canadensis tabida) in the Intermountain West, April–October 1991–92, to determine whether cranes exhibited a specific preference for crops, fields, and areas within a field. This information will help farmers and wildlife managers direct nonlethal control methods to the sites where crane damage is most likely to occur. We conducted surveys along two 37-km transects weekly in Cache Valley, Utah, and biweekly in Bear River Valley, Rich County, Utah, and Lincoln County, Wyoming. We recorded 5814 cranes in 662 separate groups. Most were located in pasture/hay (34%), small …

Thomas Hobbes's "A Discourse Of Laws", Noel B. Reynolds Sep 1994

Thomas Hobbes's "A Discourse Of Laws", Noel B. Reynolds

Faculty Publications

The recent discovery that an anonymously published 1620 essay was an early writing of Thomas Hobbes invites investigation of his early thinking. Hobbes relied on mostly classical sources to advance a basically conventionalist theory of law and to anticipate twentieth century analyses of the principles of rule of law such as that made famous by F. A. Hayek.

Observations On Double-Crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax Auritus) At Sportfishing Waters In Southwestern Utah, Michael J. Ottenbacher, Dale K. Hepworth, Louis N. Berg Aug 1994

Observations On Double-Crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax Auritus) At Sportfishing Waters In Southwestern Utah, Michael J. Ottenbacher, Dale K. Hepworth, Louis N. Berg

Great Basin Naturalist

Counts of Double-crested Cormorants (Phalacrocorax auritus) were made at 13 reservoirs and lakes in southwestern Utah during 1989–91 to determine current abundance of that species. Food habits of cormorants were studied at three of the reservoirs in 1989. Data were also collected on trout abundance during standardized gill-netting to make comparisons between cormorant numbers and trout abundance. Cormorants were observed at all waters studied except one and were generally most numerous during the spring as they migrated through the area. Estimated cormorant abundance ranged from 0 to 34 bird-days per ha and was highest at the larger, lower-elevation …

Hubris And Atē: A Latter-Day Warning From The Book Of Mormon, Richard D. Draper Jul 1994

Hubris And Atē: A Latter-Day Warning From The Book Of Mormon, Richard D. Draper

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Civilizations fall due to complex pressures, but the Book of Mormon points to one sin which assisted if not drove the demise of both the Nephite and Jaredite peoples. This sin was pride. This essay ties pride to the Old World concepts of hubris and at? as a means of revealing the dynamic nature of this sin and exploring its deadly character. It shows that pride leads to hubris, the attempt by individuals and nations to become a law unto themselves, and that the consequence of hubris is at?, a spiritual blindness that impels the individual or society …

A Chronological Setting For The Epistles Of Mormon To Moroni, Alan C. Miner Jul 1994

A Chronological Setting For The Epistles Of Mormon To Moroni, Alan C. Miner

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Although chapters 8 and 9 of the book of Moroni (Mormon’s epistles to Moroni) were placed with Mormon and Moroni’s abridgment by Moroni sometime between the years ad 401 and 421, these chapters were not written at that time. The insertion into the text of these epistles was done for doctrinal reasons; however, mixed in with the doctrinal message are certain facts and phrases that deal with their historical-chronological setting. By analyzing the specific chronological clues contained within Mormon’s epistles and comparing them with his abridged record of the final years of the Nephite nation, we can create a set …

Brood Habitat Use By Sage Grouse In Oregon, Martin S. Drut, John A. Crawford, Michael A. Gregg Apr 1994

Brood Habitat Use By Sage Grouse In Oregon, Martin S. Drut, John A. Crawford, Michael A. Gregg

Great Basin Naturalist

Habitat use by Sage Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus hens with broods was examined at Jackass Creek and Hart Mountain, Oregon, from 1989 through 1991. Sage Grouse hens initially selected low sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) cover types during early brood-rearing, big sagebrush cover types later in the brood-rearing period, and ultimately concentrated use in and near lakebeds and meadows. Areas used by Sage Grouse broods typically had greater forb frequency than did random sites. Hens at Jackass Creek selected sites with forb cover similar to that generally available at Hart Mountain, but home ranges were larger at Jackass Creek because of …

Tacit Cooperation Between Enemies: Two Case Studies, Kristina Handy Apr 1994

Tacit Cooperation Between Enemies: Two Case Studies, Kristina Handy

Theses and Dissertations

This research details a point of reference to understand two case studies of cooperation that developed among lower-level, or non policy-making bureaucrats during times of conflict or war. Using components of game theory, I propose that when an international conflictual relationship occurs that resembles an iterated Prisoners' Dilemma, and that meets certain conditions, tacit cooperation can emerge. Tacit cooperation consists of illicit or implied cooperation that is not sanctioned at the national policy level.

In this research I develop a framework of tacit cooperation, relying heavily upon Robert Axelrod's theory of evolutionary cooperation. With the framework in place, I then …
