Bombing The Sister Republic: The United States And Switzerland During World War Ii, James H. Hutson Feb 1995

Bombing The Sister Republic: The United States And Switzerland During World War Ii, James H. Hutson

Swiss American Historical Society Review

At 11:10 A.M., April 1, 1944, American military authorities in London received the following "strike message" from aircraft attacking a target in Europe: "392 Group bombed Last Resort with poor results at 10:50 hours. " This terse communication described the "gravest violation " of Swiss neutrality during the Second World War--in fact, during the entire twentieth century: the bombing of the city of Schafthausen by planes of the 2nd Division of the American 8th Army Air Force.

The "Isaiah Problem" In The Book Of Mormon, Sidney B. Sperry Jan 1995

The "Isaiah Problem" In The Book Of Mormon, Sidney B. Sperry

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Doubts as to the literary unity of the book of Isaiah are fairly recent. The late nineteenth century saw a division of Isaiah into three parts by critics, who categorized only 262 of the 1292 verses as the genuine product of Isaiah. These critics deny the prediction element of prophecy and highlight different literary forms and theological ideas. The Book of Mormon attributes two of these three sections to Isaiah by quotation; ancient scriptures as well give no hint of a division. Christ and the apostles themselves attribute the book to Isaiah. Internal evidences of the unity of the book …

The Book Of Mormon As Literature, Sidney B. Sperry Jan 1995

The Book Of Mormon As Literature, Sidney B. Sperry

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

What constitutes great literature? What is it about the literature of the Book of Mormon that has such a profound effect upon its readers? Although perhaps not beautifully written, the Book of Mormon’s message or theme justifies its classification as great literature and accounts for its profound effect on the lives of millions.

The Isaiah Quotation: 2 Nephi 12-24, Sidney B. Sperry Jan 1995

The Isaiah Quotation: 2 Nephi 12-24, Sidney B. Sperry

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Nephi quotes from the book of Isaiah because of its relevance to his people and to all men. He highlights the message of Christ’s appearance and atonement. The latter-day prophecies, both those which have been fulfilled and those that are yet to be fulfilled, are cited and explained. Israel will be restored in the latter days, but warnings accompany this glorious prophecy. The enemies of Zion will be confounded.

Types Of Literature In The Book Of Mormon: "The American Gospel", Sidney B. Sperry Jan 1995

Types Of Literature In The Book Of Mormon: "The American Gospel", Sidney B. Sperry

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The American Gospel, found in 3 Nephi, differs from the Gospels of the New Testament in that Jesus is teaching as a resurrected, glorified, and exalted person. It includes details of the cataclysmic events at the time of the crucifixion and of the multiple appearances of the Savior to the Nephites. Jesus delivers sermons to the Nephites in general and also to the Nephite twelve. He heals the sick and institutes the sacrament. The depiction of prayer is perhaps the most powerful in all scripture. The Savior quotes the prophecies of Isaiah and Micah with regard to the New Jerusalem …

Moroni Expounds Old Testament Scriptures, Sidney B. Sperry Jan 1995

Moroni Expounds Old Testament Scriptures, Sidney B. Sperry

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The prophecies given by Moroni to Joseph Smith come from Malachi, Isaiah, and Joel. The Malachi prophecies deal with the rise and restoration of the church, preparation for the millennium, and the significance of the sons of Levi. The Isaiah prophecies, explained in the Doctrine and Covenants, give a direct explanation of the millennium and Joseph’s own role in the preparation for it. The Joel prophecies have to do with the events just prior to the “great and terrible day of the Lord.”

Rangeland Alpha Diversities: Harvey Valley, Lassen National Forest, California, Raymond D. Ratliff Jan 1995

Rangeland Alpha Diversities: Harvey Valley, Lassen National Forest, California, Raymond D. Ratliff

Great Basin Naturalist

Monitoring diversity usually begins by estimating alpha diversity of a plant community on a specific site. The objectives of this study were to provide alpha diversity benchmarks and to determine whether rangeland community basal cover characteristics explained variation in diversity estimates. Plant and surface component cover percentages were estimated on 51 plots (representing four vegetation types) on the Lassen National Forest, CA. Each plot was sampled with 30 random, 102 basal point transects. Jackknife procedures were used to compute means and standard errors for Margalef's diversity index (Dm), which stresses species richness, and Simpson's index (Ds), …

Historic Expansion Of Juniperus Occidentalis (Western Juniper) In Southeastern Oregon, Richard F. Miller, Jeffery A. Rose Jan 1995

Historic Expansion Of Juniperus Occidentalis (Western Juniper) In Southeastern Oregon, Richard F. Miller, Jeffery A. Rose

Great Basin Naturalist

The chronology of Juniperus occidentalis (western juniper) expansion in eastern Oregon, the effect of plant canopy and interspace on J. occidentalis seedling establishment and growth rates, and the age of J. occidentalis maximum reproductive potential were determined. Measurements were recorded in twenty-two 0.4-ha plots established in sagebrush-grassland communities and six 0.1-ha plots in Populus tremuloides (quaking aspen) communities. J. occidentalis began increasing during the 1880s in stands containing > 130 yr old. Relatively steady establishment ensued into the 1950s and then began to progress at a geometric rate in the 19602. J. occidentalis encroachment into aspen stands began between 1910 and …

Local Distribution And Foraging Behavior Of The Spotted Bat (Euderma Maculatum) In Worthwestern Colorado And Adjacent Utah, Jay F. Storz

Great Basin Naturalist

This study investigated local distribution and foraging behavior of the spotted bat (Euderma maculatum) in Dinosaur National Monument, Colorado-Utah, by monitoring audible echolocation calls. The occurrence of this species was verified in a variety of habitat types in canyon bottoms and other relatively low elevation sites, indicating that the animals were widely distributed and locally common in the area. Foraging spotted bats concentrated flight activity in the open-air space above meadows occasionally exploited near-canopy habitat (within 8 m of foliage). Bats began to forage shortly after dark, and activity levels were relatively constant throughout the night. Foraging spotted …

"Pleasing Passages": Style In The Old English Pastoral Care, Ray Moye Jan 1995

"Pleasing Passages": Style In The Old English Pastoral Care, Ray Moye

Quidditas

The Old English Pastoral Care, a translation of Gregory the Great's Liber Regula Pastoralis which King Alfred completed sometime in the first few years of the 890s, was the first in a series of translations of Latin Christian works in English that would serve as the foundation of Alfred's program of cultural and educational reform aimed at restoring England's preeminence as a leading Christian intellectual center. This reputation that the land had enjoyed during the glory days of Bede and Alcuin had been lost as a consequence of continual Viking invasions in the eighth and ninth centuries, with the …

Leonardo's Virtuvian Man: A Renaissance Microcosm, Charles Carman

Quidditas

Human nature is that nature which...elevated above all the works of God...enfolds intellectual and sensible nature...so that the ancients were right in calling it a microcosm, or a small world. Hence, human nature is that nature which, if it were elevated unto a union with Maximality, would be the fullness of all the perfections of each and every thing.

The Development And Validation Of The Missionary Language Performance Test, Blair E. Bateman Jan 1995

The Development And Validation Of The Missionary Language Performance Test, Blair E. Bateman

Theses and Dissertations

Performance tests are an effective way of assessing examinees' ability to perform specific job-related tasks. This thesis details the development and validation of a performance test designed to measure LDS missionaries' ability to perform missionary tasks in a foreign language, the Missionary Language Performance Test (MLPT).

The development of the test involved identifying a set of relevant missionary tasks, specifying the criteria to be evaluated, designing test items, devising a procedure for sampling tasks and for administering and rating the test, and training raters to administer the test. Three separate studies were conducted to validate the test: (a) both the …

Edwards V. Aguillard: Court History And Implications For Legislation, Wendy Call Jan 1995

Edwards V. Aguillard: Court History And Implications For Legislation, Wendy Call

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

An affirmative chorus rose in the 1981 Louisiana Legislature to enact the "Balanced Treatment for Creation-Science and Evolution-Science in Public School Instruction" Act. This statute, which required public school teachers to give equal time to creation- and evolution-science, set in motion a chain of litigation with the momentum to reach the Supreme Court of the United States as Edwards v. Aguillard. Rooted in more than a century of religious controversy surrounding Darwin's The Origin of Species, the threat of religious-educational enmeshment brought Edwards to the threshold of First Amendment interpretation. Although Louisiana's Balanced Treatment Act was not upheld as constitutional …
