Community Savings Funds: Providing Access To Basic Financial Services In Marginalized Rural Areas Of Mexico, Gabriala Zapata Sep 2002

Community Savings Funds: Providing Access To Basic Financial Services In Marginalized Rural Areas Of Mexico, Gabriala Zapata

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

The Community Savings Funds (CSFs) promoted by the Ministry of Agriculture in Mexico seek to provide marginalized community groups with a simple mechanism that allows them to save and administer their own funds securely, efficiently, and profitably, according to their own needs and priorities. Specially trained promoters help set up CSFs for a period of one year—using a standardized Toolkit—after which they are expected to work autonomously. There are 540 CSFs in 12 states with over 12,800 members and savings totaling 4.45 million pesos (US 5445,000). This paper describes the characteristics of the CSF model and the results to date. …

Pact's Women's Empowerment Program In Nepal : A Savings- And Literacy- Led Alternative To Financial Building, Jeffrey Ashe, Lisa Parrott [email protected]

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

Pact's Women's Empowerment Program (WEP) in Nepal operated through 6,500 groups with 130,00 women members. These groups mobilized nearly $2,000,000 of assets in less than three years with 94% on loan to 45,000 group members. By mid 2001, WEP had as many outstanding loans as CARD in the Philippines and Compartamos in Mexico, two very well known "credit-led" microfi-nance institutions, while working through three times as many groups. In addition, 65,000 group members learned to read through Pact's innovative curriculum that focused exclusively on managing a group, starting a business, and women's empowerment. WEP was implemented by 240 partners (most …

Captain Moroni's Wartime Strategies: An Application For The Spiritual Battles Of Our Day, Richard J. Mcclendon Sep 2002

Captain Moroni's Wartime Strategies: An Application For The Spiritual Battles Of Our Day, Richard J. Mcclendon

Faculty Publications

As Mormon abridged the Nephite record he included what he deemed most relevant for latter-day Israel including stories of war. The so-called war chapters provide a rich resource of modern-day spiritual applications for teachers and students of the gospel (see Alma 43-62). One way to apply these chapters is to draw a parallel between the physical and the spiritual between Moroni's physical battles on the field and the spiritual battles that we face in our own lives today. To be more specific we might ask these questions: (1) What strategies did Captain Moroni use to prepare and protect himself and …

Legislating Citizenship In The United States: The Impact Of State Building On Woman Sufferage Legislation, 1848-1918, Eric C. Dahlin Aug 2002

Legislating Citizenship In The United States: The Impact Of State Building On Woman Sufferage Legislation, 1848-1918, Eric C. Dahlin

Theses and Dissertations

This is a state-level analysis of the impact of state building on woman suffrage legislation in the United States. This study examines all states in which state legislatures were conferred the power to submit a constitutional amendment to the electorate for approval. I use a sequential random-effects logistic regression model to estimate the effects of state building on legislative outcome. Legislative outcome is measured in three stages: whether or not a bill is introduced in either the House or the Senate during a legislative session, whether or not a bill is voted on in either the House or the Senate …

A Third Jaredite Record: The Sealed Portion Of The Gold Plates, Valentin Arts Jul 2002

A Third Jaredite Record: The Sealed Portion Of The Gold Plates, Valentin Arts

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

In the Book of Mormon, two records (a large engraved stone and twenty-four gold plates) contain the story of an ancient civilization known as the Jaredites. There appears to be evidence of an unpublished third record that provides more information on this people and on the history of the world. When the brother of Jared received a vision of Jesus Christ, he was taught many things but was instructed not to share them with the world until the time of his death. The author proposes that the brother of Jared did, in fact, write those things down shortly before his …

Traduit De L'Anglais: The First French Book Of Mormon, Richard D. Mcclellan

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

When the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was first organized in the year 1830, the Book of Mormon had been published in only one language: English. But the church was growing quickly and spreading to other parts of the world. One of the first publications of the Book of Mormon in another language was in French. This article gives an account of the French translation from 1850 to 1852, when Elder John Taylor, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, presided over a newly opened mission in France. Elder Taylor oversaw the translation process, which was …

Il Libro Di Mormon: Anticipating Growth Beyond Italy's Waldensian Valleys, Michael W. Homer

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

In the year 1850, Elder Lorenzo Snow of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles arrived in Italy as a missionary. He and his companions spent much of their time with a Waldensian community. Elder Snow soon began sending missionaries to Switzerland to preach the gospel to French speakers there and began publishing church materials into French. The new materials caused a lot of opposition from Swiss Protestants and Italian Catholics. Elder Snow then went to England, where he solicited the help of an anonymous translator, and together they completed the translation of the Book of Mormon into Italian. Elder Snow …

A Reader's Library, Martin H. Raish, C. Gary Bennett Jul 2002

A Reader's Library, Martin H. Raish, C. Gary Bennett

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Two critics evaluate the book By the Hand of Mormon: The American Scripture That Launched a New World Religion. Raish opines that Givens’s book effectively explains why a person might accept the Book of Mormon and facilitates a reader’s desire to better understand the Book of Mormon. Bennett adds that Givens approaches his discussion of the Book of Mormon as a scholar, resulting in a more accepting readership. Givens also studies the Book of Mormon with respect to its role in promoting the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as a worldwide religion.

A Systematic Approach To Assess Highland Resource Management Options In Northern Thailand, K. Trisophon, V. Punyawadee Jul 2002

A Systematic Approach To Assess Highland Resource Management Options In Northern Thailand, K. Trisophon, V. Punyawadee

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Problems that have emerged from the ongoing highland development schemes in northernThailand indicate the need for better understanding of resource management issues in the region. Particularattention has been paid to land and water management. An integrated modelling system has been developedto address this issue based on a multidisciplinary approach. The components of the system include a cropsimulation model, a hydrological model and a set of linear programming models. The modelling systemenables users to simulate farmers’ decision making process concerning farmland and water resourcemanagement. Conditions for farmers’ decisions are adjusted seasonally and annually, by an embeddedfeedback mechanism, according to the simulated …

Environment Explorer: Spatial Support System For The Integrated Assessment Of Socio-Economic And Environmental Policies In The Netherlands, Guy Engelen, Inge Uljee, Roger White

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Environment Explorer is a system developed to support spatial scientists, planners and decision makers at the regional and national level in the Netherlands to analyse a wide range of social, economic and environmental policies and their associated spatial patterns. The core of this system consists of linked dynamic spatial models operating at both the micro- and the macro-geographical scales. At the macro scale, the modeling framework integrates several component sub-models, representing the natural, social, and economic sub-systems. At the micro level, cellular automata based models determine the faith of individual parcels of land based on institutional, physical and environmental factors …

Ideas For Assessing The Sustainability Potential Of Human- Environmental Auxiliary Systems - The Case Of Municipal Solid Waste Landfills -, D. J. Lang, Claudia R. Binder, B. Stäubli, Roland W. Scholz Jul 2002

Ideas For Assessing The Sustainability Potential Of Human- Environmental Auxiliary Systems - The Case Of Municipal Solid Waste Landfills -, D. J. Lang, Claudia R. Binder, B. Stäubli, Roland W. Scholz

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Although sustainability is a widely accepted guiding idea for the development of our planet, only a few concepts exist on how to specify this idea in the context of human-environmental systems. We understand sustainability as a combination of system limit management with ethical allegiances. Uncertainties given by large timeframes and vague definitions present a major problem when assessing if an object or circumstance is sustainable or not. However, a sound standing assessment is indispensable if sustainability is to be more than a buzzword. In this paper, we present a systemic method for assessing the sustainability potential of anthropogenic systems. This …

Conceptually-Based Multivariate Simulation Of Monthly Runoff, P. Claps Jul 2002

Conceptually-Based Multivariate Simulation Of Monthly Runoff, P. Claps

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

This paper presents a multivariate extension of a parsimonious conceptually-based AutoRegressive-Moving Average (ARMA) stochastic model for monthly runoff. The multi-station model is aContemporaneous-ARMA (CARMA), which considers separately the serial and space correlation of runoff.Serial correlation is reproduced in individual series by an ARMA model. The ARMA model residuals areuncorrelated in time but correlated in space. Spatial correlation of runoff is then reproduced by generatingcorrelated series of residuals and using them to generate runoff through the individual ARMA models. In theconceptual framework, stochastic ARMA parameters are related to the parameters of a linear system, whichrepresents the watershed filter that produces runoff. …

Lpv Approximation Of Distributed Parameter Systems In Environmental Modeling, G. Belforte, F. Dabbene, P. Gay Jul 2002

Lpv Approximation Of Distributed Parameter Systems In Environmental Modeling, G. Belforte, F. Dabbene, P. Gay

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Environmental systems often involve phenomena that are continuous functions not only of time, but also of other independent variables, such as space coordinates. Typical examples are transportation phenomena of mass or energy, such as heat transmission and/or exchange, humidity diffusion or concentration distributions. These systems are intrinsically distributed parameter systems whose description usually requires the introduction of partial differential equations (PDE). Therefore, their modeling can be quite complex, both for what concerns the model construction and its identification. Indeed, a typical approach for the simulation of such systems is the use of finite element techniques. However, this kind of description …

Fuzzy Prediction Of The Algal Blooms In The Orbetello Lagoon, Stefano Marsili-Libelli, G. Pacini, C. Barresi Jul 2002

Fuzzy Prediction Of The Algal Blooms In The Orbetello Lagoon, Stefano Marsili-Libelli, G. Pacini, C. Barresi

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The Orbetello lagoon is a shallow brackish waterbody subject to intense and diverse eutrophication (phytoplancton, macroalgae and macrophytes). Periodically a large amount of algae must be artificially removed, their collection and disposal representing a considerable management cost. This paper describes the design of a bloom predictor based on the daily fluctuations of simple water quality parameters such ad dissolved oxygen, oxidation-reduction potential, pH and temperature. The task of the fuzzy predictor is to recognise the possibility that a bloom of the macroalgae population is about to occur based on the changing daily pattern of these variables. The fuzzy predictor is …

A Mysterious Image: Brigham Young With An Unknown Wife, Richard Neitzel Holzapfel, Robert F. Schwartz Jul 2002

A Mysterious Image: Brigham Young With An Unknown Wife, Richard Neitzel Holzapfel, Robert F. Schwartz

BYU Studies

Of the hundreds of images of Brigham Young, until recently only two were known that show Brigham posing with one of his wives. While rumors of a third such images have existed for some time, no one could find a copy of it until this year. What we found was a photograph of the original daguerreotype (fig. 1); the original itself, printed on a small coper plate, is still missing. This rumored image was mysterious not only because it had disappeared but also because the wife's face on the daguerreotype had been completely obliterated. Unanswered questions regarding its damage make …

Putting The Decision In Decision Support, David Swayne Jul 2002

Putting The Decision In Decision Support, David Swayne

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

We consider a novel approach to developing multi-objective environmental decision support applications. We propose using causal probabilistic networks (CPN) to subsume one or more engineering process models, together with CPN implementations of specific decisions and utility measures. So-called decision nodes are set to prior probability assignments of 1/N (where the particular decision has N possible values) and utility nodes are based upon the standard lottery principle give a value for that decision choice. The decisions can be so-called "one-shot" or sequential (time-dependent or at least seasonal). In the latter case maximization of the utility is calculated by gaming to optimize …

Modelling Intervention Strategies For Cooperative Environmental Management, Jim Doran Jul 2002

Modelling Intervention Strategies For Cooperative Environmental Management, Jim Doran

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Central to sustainable natural resource management is the achievement of cooperation and collective action amongst stakeholders with initially conflicting short and long-term goals. It is argued that automatically generated agent-based computer models may be used to explore the ways in which external intervention can bring about effective stakeholder cooperation in environmental resource management contexts. The potential advantages of the agent-based modelling approach in this context include objectivity, and the discovery of currently unrecognised intervention strategies of practical value. An experimental procedure is proposed, and, by reference to a detailed design for a class of agent-based models, the technical obstacles that …

A Distributed Simulation System For Irrigation Planning At The Catchment Scale, C. Gandolfi, A. Facchi, B. Ortuani, D. Maggi Jul 2002

A Distributed Simulation System For Irrigation Planning At The Catchment Scale, C. Gandolfi, A. Facchi, B. Ortuani, D. Maggi

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

The paper presents the prototype of a simulation system which reproduces all the hydrological processes relevant in alluvial irrigated plains. It allows the evaluation of the distribution of crop water consumption in space and time, as well as the simulation of the interaction between irrigation and groundwater resources. The simulation package is based on the coupling of two hydrological models - a submodel of the unsaturated soil layer and a sub-model of the aquifer system- with a Geographical Information System (GIS). The prototype has been applied to a large irrigation district, of approximately 700 km2, located in the densely-settled Lombardia …

Development Of An Intelligent Data Analysis System For Knowledge Management In Environmental Data Bases, Miquel Sànchez-Marrè, Karina Gibert, Ignasi Rodríguez-Roda, Eva Bueno, Lidia Mozo, Aleix Clavell, Mario Martína, Philippe Rougé

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

In this work, the goals of the ongoing research project “Development of an Intelligent Data Analysis System for Knowledge Management in Environmental Data Bases” are presented. This project started in 2000, and the Spanish Government will finance it until 2003. Its main goal is to design and develop a prototype of a tool for intelligent data analysis and implicit knowledge management of databases, with special focus on environmental databases. It is remarkable the high quantity of information and knowledge patterns implicit in large databases coming from the monitoring of any system or dynamical environmental process. For instance, historical data collected …

Optimization Of A Model To Predict Salinity Intrusion In San Francisco Bay Estuary Using A Genetic Algorithm, T. Rajkumar, David E. Thompson Jul 2002

Optimization Of A Model To Predict Salinity Intrusion In San Francisco Bay Estuary Using A Genetic Algorithm, T. Rajkumar, David E. Thompson

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

Salinity intrusion is a significant issue in the San Francisco Bay Delta because this estuarycontributes substantially to fresh water supply for much of northern California. Traditionally, salinity alongthe estuary has been measured using monitoring instruments installed at various locations within theSacramento-San Joaquin River Delta system, and these measurements are used to predict future conditionsand evaluate the water management alternatives. The California Department of Water Resources DeltaSimulation Model (DWRDSM) is used for this type of analysis. DWRDSM is an unsteady one-dimensionalhydrodynamic and salt transport model. It can provide estimates of salinity at almost any location within theBay-Delta system. However, like many …

Agland Decision Tool: A Multicriteria Decision Support System For Agricultural Property, J. Parsons Jul 2002

Agland Decision Tool: A Multicriteria Decision Support System For Agricultural Property, J. Parsons

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software

From sustainability to productivity, agricultural land use issues involve complex multiobjective decision making problems. The Agland Decision Tool is an Excel based decision support system designed to help agricultural property managers make informed production decisions. Using the Agland Decision Tool, managers can build and compare up to five different production alternatives on the basis of: landlord returns, tenant returns, weather reduction risks, flexibility, capital outlay, labor requirements, and erosion control and sustainability. The alternatives are ranked using the multi-criteria decision making methods: PROMETHEE and weighted average. The ability to compare results using two different ranking methods provides the decision maker …
