The Unfortunate Traveller And The Ramist Controversy: A Narrative Dilemma, Kurtis B. Haas Jan 2003

The Unfortunate Traveller And The Ramist Controversy: A Narrative Dilemma, Kurtis B. Haas

Quidditas

The narrative and rhetorical structure of Thomas Nashe's The Unfortunate Traveller has vexed its critics almost since its initial appearance in 1593. Most modern critics have followed a line something akin to that of G.R. Hibbard, who sees Nashe as a writer unable at times to distinguish his own voice from that of the narrator, Jack Wilton. Stephen Hilliard’s study of Nashe notes the critical tendency to see The Unfortunate Traveller as “a formless work, spun out by a careless author with no fixed purpose” and, though he chides such critics for ignoring its many virtues, grants that they likely …

The Marriage Of Adam And Eve: An Ancient Covenant, Roseann Benson Jan 2003

The Marriage Of Adam And Eve: An Ancient Covenant, Roseann Benson

Theses and Dissertations

The metaphorical marriage, as described by the Old Testament prophets beginning with Hosea, symbolized the relationship of God the bridegroom, to israel his bride. This covenant relationship between God and Israel also symbolized the relationship God ordained between husband and wife. Literary structures, ritual patterns, and the Hebrew word which means "know" are common to ancient Near Eastern treaties and Old Testament covenants; most importantly, the marriage covenant. The marriage covenant is under the umbrella of previous covenants which a man and woman have entered into as part of the house of Israel. The terms "help meet" and "ruler" are …

“Nothing Less Than Miraculous” The First Decade Of Mormonism In Mongolia, Steven C. Harper Jan 2003

“Nothing Less Than Miraculous” The First Decade Of Mormonism In Mongolia, Steven C. Harper

BYU Studies

The Latter-day Saints' assumption of Christ's great commission—the command to teach and baptize all nations—can hardly be overstated as a motivational force for sending missionaries to far-away places to testify of the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. An 1831 revelation authorized and empowered Joseph Smith to send missionaries "unto the ends of the world" and "to lay the foundation of this church, and to bring it forth out of obscurity" (D&C 1:23, 30). What better manifestation could be found of the power of these words than the events of the first decade of Mormonism in Mongolia, perhaps the most obscure …

Comparisons Of Local Infiltration-Excess, Overland Flow And Associated Erosion Behaviour With River Behaviour At The Catchment Scale Jan 2003

Comparisons Of Local Infiltration-Excess, Overland Flow And Associated Erosion Behaviour With River Behaviour At The Catchment Scale

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Modeling overland flow and erosional behaviour is a very important scientific task today to prevent environmental impacts from human activities as well as physical disasters such as floods and desertification. In the particular project the impacts from selective logging that occurred in Malaysia has been attempted to identify and quantify by comparing hydrological parameters both in local and catchment scale. Measurements of rainfall, overland flow and suspended sediment flux have been recorded for a year with a resolution of five minutes. A Databased Mechanistic (DBM) modeling approach has been applied to the data to facilitate physical interpretation of the results, …

Assessment Of The Impact Of Mining On Agricultural Land Using Erosion-Deposition Model And Space Borne Multispectral Data Jan 2003

Assessment Of The Impact Of Mining On Agricultural Land Using Erosion-Deposition Model And Space Borne Multispectral Data

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Since erosion of mine overburden and mine dump leads to its deposition down the slope in the catchment, an attempt was made to study the erosion-deposition pattern in a micro watershed in part of Goa state, south-western India using the erosion-deposition model proposed by Mitasova et al. (1996). Information on various parameters of the model, namely curve number, management factor, cover factor, slope, soil erodibility, etc. was derived from the Indian Remote Sensing satellite (IRS-IC) Linear Image Self Scanning sensor LISS-III and PAN-merged data in conjunction with the DEM, field check and topographic maps at 1:25,000 scale. While only 11.2% …

The Story Of A Disciple's Life: Preparing The Biography Of Elder Neal A. Maxwell, Bruce C. Hafen Jan 2003

The Story Of A Disciple's Life: Preparing The Biography Of Elder Neal A. Maxwell, Bruce C. Hafen

BYU Studies

The story behind my work on the biography of Elder Neal A. Maxwell actually began in 1976, when he invited me to take leave from Brigham Young University and work for two years under his daily direction in the new Correlation Department at Church headquarters. In later years, when I was an administrator and a teacher at Ricks College and then at BYU, I saw him often in Church Educational System meetings, where he was a key figure on the Church Board of Education.

Why Did They Emigrate? An Examination Of Five Danish Farming Periodicals During The Period From 1860 To 1900 To Determine What Motivated Farm Laborers To Emigrate., Jette Mackintosh Jan 2003

Why Did They Emigrate? An Examination Of Five Danish Farming Periodicals During The Period From 1860 To 1900 To Determine What Motivated Farm Laborers To Emigrate., Jette Mackintosh

The Bridge

One question in emigration research has always intrigued me: Why did Peter Jensen find conditions in Denmark so unbearable that he could stand them no longer or why was he so tempted by the prospects on the other side of the Atlantic that he emigrated, while his neighbor, Jens Petersen, who apparently had exactly the same conditions, stayed at home and put up with things? Unfortunately it can probably never be answered satisfactorily. It may be possible to find reasons for some of the emigrations in letters and diaries, but we have no basis for comparison in the form of …

Israel, Historical Background Of, Dana M. Pike Jan 2003

Israel, Historical Background Of, Dana M. Pike

Faculty Publications

Israel, historical background of Familiarity with the historical background of ancient Israel is beneficial, even essential for students of the Book of Mormon for many reasons , including the following: (1) so readers can appreciate the historical context in which the Lehites and Mulekites originated ; (2) because the Book of Mormon prophets presupposed that their people (and latter-day readers of their records) were familiar with the Hebrew scriptures (the Ch1istian Old Testament) and Israelite. history as they refer to the Israelite Exodus from Egypt, the existence of ten "lost tribes" of Israel, and so on 1 Ne. 17) ;

Data Mining Of Forensic Association Rules, James V. Hansen, Paul Benjamin Lowry, Rayman D. Meservy Jan 2003

Data Mining Of Forensic Association Rules, James V. Hansen, Paul Benjamin Lowry, Rayman D. Meservy

Faculty Publications

Data mining offers a potentially powerful method for analyzing the large data sets that are typically found in forensic computing (FC) investigations to discover useful and previously unknown patterns within the data. The contribution of this paper is an innovative and rigorous data mining methodology that enables effective search of large volumes of complex data to discover offender profiles. These profiles are based on association rules, which are computationally sound, flexible, easily interpreted, and provide a ready set of data for refinement via predictive models. Methodology incorporates link analysis and creation of predictive models based on association rule input.

Stjernen--A Danish Or An American Paper?, Karsten Kjer Christensen Jan 2003

Stjernen--A Danish Or An American Paper?, Karsten Kjer Christensen

The Bridge

On October 8, 1936, The Dannebrog News printed a special issue celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of Dannebrog's incorporation as a town. The first Danish immigrants arrived in Howard County in 1871 and founded the settlement of Dannebrog the following year. But it would be another fourteen years before Dannebrog received official status and could establish its first town council. First appearing in 1898, the English-language The Dannebrog News became the longest persevering publication in the Dannebrog area. It was not the town's first, however, as two other newspapers preceded it. In the spring of 1874, an attorney by the name …

The market study will provide various data showing the effectiveness of these ads, including how often students read the Daily Universe, how often students notice the "Did you know?" ads, what students think about the ads, how students feel the ads would be more effective, and what products and services the students know are at the bookstore. In addition to the effectiveness of the ads, we also will be identifying preferences, opinions, and possible misconceptions the students have that would help the bookstore know how to better market its products and services. DayChak Consulting is comprised of Serhiy Dutchak, Matthew …

Automated Grammatical Tagging Of Language Samples From Children With And Without Language Impairment, Deborah Millet Jan 2003

Automated Grammatical Tagging Of Language Samples From Children With And Without Language Impairment, Deborah Millet

Theses and Dissertations

Grammatical classification ("tagging") of words in language samples is a component of syntactic analysis for both clinical and research purposes. Previous studies have shown that probability-based software can be used to tag samples from adults and typically-developing children with high (about 95%) accuracy. The present study found that similar accuracy can be obtained in tagging samples from school-aged children with and without language impairment if the software uses tri-gram rather than bi-gram probabilities and large corpora are used to obtain probability information to train the tagging software.

The Effectiveness Of Consuming Fortified Foods (Api) With Iron On The Anemia Ferropriva In Resident Students To Great Altitude Of The Rural Area Of The Departemento Of La Paz, Beatriz Julia Ramirez Copa

Theses and Dissertations

In many countries, the health and the development of a great number of people are compromised by the insufficient distribution of micro-nutrients. The deficiency of iron is one of the things that to a large extent contributes to the high rates of death and maternal and childhood mortality, affecting also a great percentage of school aged children. Bolivia, along with the majority of underdeveloped countries, presents high prevalence of anemia in the students. Recent studies confirm that anemia nutrients are a problem of public health of great magnitude to rural and urban level (Fernández et al, 1994). Before this situation …

Departments that harvest tomato are Santa Cruz, Cochabamba and La Paz, Santa Cruz being the department that shows the highest rates of production with 40653 TM in comparison with La Paz which has a production of 3109 TM and Cochabamba of 2420 TM. The principle factors in affect are, the best climatic conditions in Santa Cruz, while Cochabamba and La Paz have differences in seasonal changes (National Institute of Statistics, 1998). The importance of the tomato harvest lies in consumption …

Concealing And Confounding Adverse Signals: Insider Wealth-Maximizing Behavior In The Ipo Process, James S. Ang, James C. Brau Jan 2003

Concealing And Confounding Adverse Signals: Insider Wealth-Maximizing Behavior In The Ipo Process, James S. Ang, James C. Brau

Faculty Publications

We study a known negative signal, the sale of insider shares in an IPO and find that insiders adopt two concealment strategies consistent with wealth-maximizing behavior. First, insiders underreport the number of personally owned shares in the prominent original prospectus and use an obscure amendment to communicate the true higher level of shares to be offered. Second, when insiders increase shares in a later amendment, they tend to either increase secondary shares disproportional to primary share increases, or to reduce primary shares to wholly or partly conceal the increase in secondary shares offered. Insiders confound the negative secondary share signal …

“Save The Emigrants” Joseph Clewes On The Mountain Meadows Massacre, Ronald W. Walker Jan 2003

“Save The Emigrants” Joseph Clewes On The Mountain Meadows Massacre, Ronald W. Walker

BYU Studies

Occasionally a major, previously published document such as this one falls between the historical cracks and becomes virtually forgotten. Although Joseph Clewes's statement on the Mountain Meadows Massacre was published in 1877 and was widely discussed at the time, current scholars have made little or no use of it. Their omission is unfortunate.

Edward Partridge In Painesville, Ohio, Scott H. Partridge Jan 2003

Edward Partridge In Painesville, Ohio, Scott H. Partridge

BYU Studies

For a short period in the 1830s, the town of Painesville, Ohio, played an important part in the development of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The town was a place of success for Mormon missionaries; it was a religious battlefield in which the Campbellites resisted the encroachments of the missionaries; it was the home of the Painesville Telegraph, one of the most virulent critics of Mormonism; and, finally, it was the home of Edward Partridge, a man who would play a critical role as the first bishop of the Church (fig. 1).

Mormons And The Media, 1898-2003: A Selected, Annotated, And Indexed Bibliography (With Suggestions For Future Research), Sherry Baker, Daniel Stout

Print, electronic, and other forms of communications media have been consistently perceived and characterized by leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as tools to assist in spreading the gospel message throughout the world. Given this perspective, the Church from its earliest days has used various forms of media as vehicles of communication. It has produced or been affiliated with the production of numerous newspapers and magazines in the United States and in several countries worldwide. In the twentieth century, the Church embraced electronic media technologies promptly. Our goal as mass communications scholars was to compile a …

Trust And The Decision To Outsource: Affective Responses And Cognitive Processes, Mark Hansen, J.L. Morrow Jr. Jan 2003

Trust And The Decision To Outsource: Affective Responses And Cognitive Processes, Mark Hansen, J.L. Morrow Jr.

Faculty Publications

Many of the various forms of cooperative strategy that firms are pursuing in today’s economy entail the placing of important business functions in the hands of a partner. This paper examines the role of trust in the decision by a producer to place the marketing function in the hands of another entity, namely a cooperative. Although others have studied the effect of what may be termed general trust on inter-organizational relationships, few have examined the antecedents of that trust. We propose a model in which affective responses and cognitive processes are precursors to a sense of general trust, which, in …
