To Be Or Not To Be Ideophonically Impoverished, Janis B. Nuckolls Apr 2003

To Be Or Not To Be Ideophonically Impoverished, Janis B. Nuckolls

Faculty Publications

This paper addresses a current debate over the universality of ideophones, a class of expressions that are used to simulate, through performative foregrounding, the salient processes and perceptions of everyday life experience. Using data from Quechua-speaking Runa in Amazonian Ecuador, I argue for a view of ideophones as a type of cultural discourse through which speakers align themselves with nonhuman life forms and forces of nature. This alignment is suggested by the special performative properties of ideophones, which collapse the distinction between a speech event and a narrated event, thus compelling a speaker to become an action, event, or process, …

Interaction Energy Surfaces Of Small Hydrocarbon Molecules, Richard L. Rowley, Jukka-Pekka Jalkanen, Tapani A. Pakkanen, Yan Yang Mar 2003

Interaction Energy Surfaces Of Small Hydrocarbon Molecules, Richard L. Rowley, Jukka-Pekka Jalkanen, Tapani A. Pakkanen, Yan Yang

Faculty Publications

Nonbonding interactions of small alkane molecules were studied with ab initio methods. Previously reported energy data for ethane and propane dimers were supplemented with 1747 new configurations of dimers involving slightly larger hydrocarbons. The completed work provides interaction energy surfaces for all combinations of dimer pairs involving ethane, propane, isobutane, and neopentane and thus contains information of all chemical groups found in acyclic alkanes. The strongest attraction of the studied molecule pairs was encountered in isobutane C2h dimer, where an energy minimum of -1.784 kcal mol^-1 at 4.28 Angstroms separation of centermost carbon atoms was observed. The composite data set …

An Analysis Of The Influence Of Lesson Study On Preservice Secondary Mathematics Teachers' View Of Self-As Mathematics Expert, Julie Stafford Mar 2003

An Analysis Of The Influence Of Lesson Study On Preservice Secondary Mathematics Teachers' View Of Self-As Mathematics Expert, Julie Stafford

Theses and Dissertations

This research seeks to investigate the influence of lesson study on preservice secondary mathematics teachers' view of self as mathematics expert. The study acknowledges the commonly held belief that prospective mathematics teachers have that they know and understand secondary mathematics. The purpose in engaging the preservice teachers in lesson study is to dislodge this belief. In particular, this research report focuses on one preservice teacher and her experiences during lesson study. Using the data collected, the researcher reports on the baseline beliefs that the preservice teacher held toward her knowledge of secondary mathematics, her mathematical experiences during the actual lesson …

High-Resolution Measurements With A Spaceborne Pencil-Beam Scatterometer Using Combined Range/Doppler Discrimination Techniques, David G. Long, Michael W. Spencer, Wu-Yang Tsai Mar 2003

High-Resolution Measurements With A Spaceborne Pencil-Beam Scatterometer Using Combined Range/Doppler Discrimination Techniques, David G. Long, Michael W. Spencer, Wu-Yang Tsai

Faculty Publications

Conically scanning pencil-beam scatterometer systems, such as the SeaWinds radar, constitute an important class of instruments for spaceborne climate observation. In addition to ocean winds, scatterometer data are being applied to a wide range of land and cryospheric applications. A key issue for future scatterometer missions is improved spatial resolution. Pencil-beam scatterometers to date have been real-aperture systems where only range discrimination is used, resulting in a relatively coarse resolution of approximately 25 km. In this paper, the addition of Doppler discrimination techniques is proposed to meet the need for higher resolution. The unique issues associated with the simultaneous application …

The Word Of God, Leslie A. Taylor Jan 2003

The Word Of God, Leslie A. Taylor

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

The term word of God is used in rich and varied ways in the Book of Mormon. The word of God is of great worth and is clearly identified with Christ, or the Logos. The word of God is often portrayed as a two-edged sword, is associated with creation and power, provides both comfort and discomfort, is nourishing and enlightening, and plays a role in the last days. The fundamental characteristics of the word of God are constant throughout scripture.

Benthic Insect Fauna Of A Clean-Water Stream On Utah's Colorado Plateau, Usa, C. A. Brammer, J. F. Macdonald Jan 2003

Benthic Insect Fauna Of A Clean-Water Stream On Utah's Colorado Plateau, Usa, C. A. Brammer, J. F. Macdonald

Western North American Naturalist

Extensive collecting using a variety of methods was conducted in 1994 and 1995 in association with Pleasant Creek in south central Utah, USA, in an effort to inventory the aquatic insects. Collecting efforts yielded 133 insect taxa from 12 sample sites in 8 study areas from near the headwaters of Pleasant Creek and downstream to where it flows out of Capitol Reef National Park. Applying Protocol III methodology of Plafkin et al. (1989), we determined species assemblages of benthic insects and calculated selected ecological indices based on monthly collections from March through August 1994. Richness, equitability index, and mean diversity …

Genetic Structure In Striped Skunks (Mephitis Mephitis) On The Southern High Plains Of Texas, Leslie A. Hansen, Nancy E. Mathews, Richard W. Hansen, Bruce A. Vander Lee, R. Scott Lutz Jan 2003

Genetic Structure In Striped Skunks (Mephitis Mephitis) On The Southern High Plains Of Texas, Leslie A. Hansen, Nancy E. Mathews, Richard W. Hansen, Bruce A. Vander Lee, R. Scott Lutz

Western North American Naturalist

Genetic variation within populations reflects population-level social and demographic processes and influences how a population behaves as an evolutionary unit. We examined partitioning of genetic variation in striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis) from the Southern High Plains of Texas during 1994–1995. Sixty-nine male and 35 female skunks were sampled on four 12.8-km2 study plots. Plot centers ranged from 17.6 to 61.6 km apart. We used multi-locus DNA fingerprinting with 2 probes, pV47 and CTTxAGG, to test 3 hypotheses: (1) females are more genetically similar to other females than males are to other males on the same plot (indicating …

Small Mammals Within Riparian Habitats Of A Regulated And Unregulated Arid Land River, Miles J. Falck, Kenneth R. Wilson, Douglas C. Andersen Jan 2003

Small Mammals Within Riparian Habitats Of A Regulated And Unregulated Arid Land River, Miles J. Falck, Kenneth R. Wilson, Douglas C. Andersen

Western North American Naturalist

In northwestern Colorado, flow regulation on the Green River has created a transitional plant community that features encroachment by upland vegetation into cottonwood (Populus fremontii)-dominated, riparian forest on topographically high floodplain sites and reduced cottonwood regeneration on low floodplain sites. To assess how these changes might have affected small mammal distributions, in 1994 and 1995 we live-trapped during periods surrounding spring flooding at 3 sites: above and below the confluence of the regulated Green River and at the ecologically similar, but unregulated, Yampa River (reference site). More species were captured at the most regulated site along the Green …

Foot Loadings And Pad And Track Widths Of Yellowstone Grizzly Bears, David J. Mattson Jan 2003

Foot Loadings And Pad And Track Widths Of Yellowstone Grizzly Bears, David J. Mattson

Western North American Naturalist

I used measurements of grizzly bears (Ursus arctos horribilis) from the Yellowstone region, USA, to investigate relationships between widths of foot pads and widths of tracks, foot loading and pad size, incidence of tracks and type of activity, and widths of front-foot pads and gender and age-class. Track width was affected by substrates and increased relative to pad width as sizes of both pads and tracks increased. Foot loading (kg · cm−2) did not vary substantially with foot size and so did not explain the proportionately larger tracks of larger animals. Tracks were most commonly associated …

Who Are The Children Of Lehi?, D. Jeffrey Meldrum, Trent D. Stephens Jan 2003

Who Are The Children Of Lehi?, D. Jeffrey Meldrum, Trent D. Stephens

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

By covenanting with Abraham, God promised him that through his seed all the families of the earth would be blessed—his seed would be as leaven within bread. This metaphor can likewise be applied to the children of Lehi, who introduced the Abrahamic covenant to the much larger indigenous Mesoamerican population. The larger gene pool with which the children of Lehi assimilated makes it very likely that no genetic evidence will ever substantiate an American–Middle Eastern link, although Native American populations show a strong affinity with Asian populations. The assumption that all modern-day Native Americans are descended exclusively from Book of …

Before Dna, John L. Sorenson, Matthew Roper Jan 2003

Before Dna, John L. Sorenson, Matthew Roper

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Critics of the Book of Mormon often cite genetic evidence in their attacks on the historicity of the text, saying that the lack of any Near Eastern–American Indian DNA links conclusively proves that no emigration ever occurred from the Near East to the Americas. Their simplistic approach—that the Book of Mormon purports to be a history of the entire American Indian race—is not supported by archaeological or Book of Mormon evidence. The authors pose and respond to questions about the geographical scene, the spread of Book of Mormon peoples, Latter-day Saint traditions about the scenes and peoples of the Book …

Dna And The Book Of Mormon: A Phylogenetic Perspective, Michael F. Whiting Jan 2003

Dna And The Book Of Mormon: A Phylogenetic Perspective, Michael F. Whiting

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

This paper debunks the myth that the Book of Mormon has been proved false by modern DNA evidence. Critics have tried to apply American Indian DNA-based research to the Book of Mormon without designing a study specifically for that purpose. It is extraordinarily difficult to use DNA sequence information to track the lineage of any group with such a complex lineage history as the Nephites and Lamanites. Possible hypotheses about the populations from the Book of Mormon include the global colonization hypothesis (in which the three colonizing groups came to a land void of humans) and the local colonization hypothesis …

Secret Combinations And Flaxen Cords: Anti-Masonic Rhetoric And The Book Of Mormon, Paul Mouritsen Jan 2003

Secret Combinations And Flaxen Cords: Anti-Masonic Rhetoric And The Book Of Mormon, Paul Mouritsen

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Some critics of the Book of Mormon claim that Joseph Smith drew certain terminology from his nineteenth-century environment. In particular, they suggest that terms such as secret society and secret combination may reflect anti-Masonic rhetoric from the period or even that the term flaxen cord has Masonic overtones. This article traces many varied uses of secret combination in nineteenth-century writings that have nothing to do with the Masons. The appearance of these terms in the Book of Mormon does not weaken the historical claims of the Book of Mormon.

Moroni: The Final Voice, Mark D. Thomas Jan 2003

Moroni: The Final Voice, Mark D. Thomas

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Moroni, the final writer and compiler of the Book of Mormon, provides three endings to the book. His first ending, in Mormon 8–9, can be called a “signature ending”—the primary purpose here is to state that the writing is finished and to identify the author and his father and nation. Moroni, yet alive, provides a second ending, a “farewell ending,” in Ether 12. This type of ending both concludes the work and wishes the reader well but then warns or rejoices that the narrator will meet the reader at the final judgment. In the final farewell ending (in Moroni 10), …

Effects Of Habitat Disturbance On Diets Of Great Horned Owl (Bubo Virginianus) In A Cold Desert, Shelly R. Kremer, Mark C. Belk Jan 2003

Effects Of Habitat Disturbance On Diets Of Great Horned Owl (Bubo Virginianus) In A Cold Desert, Shelly R. Kremer, Mark C. Belk

Western North American Naturalist

To determine the potential effect of habitat disturbance, Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) diets were quantified in disturbed and undisturbed habitats over a 2-year period at Dugway Proving Ground in the Great Basin Desert of Tooele County, Utah. Invertebrates were the most abundant prey by count, whereas mammals constituted the majority of diet by biomass. Species richness in the diet did not differ between habitats or among seasons after correcting for the number of pellets in each sample. However, the number of vertebrate species was greater than the number of invertebrate species in the diet, and this ratio …
