No Man Knows My Psychology: Fawn Brodie, Joseph Smith, And Psychoanalysis, Charles L. Cohen Jan 2005

No Man Knows My Psychology: Fawn Brodie, Joseph Smith, And Psychoanalysis, Charles L. Cohen

BYU Studies

Anyone (like me) approaching the study of Mormon history wet behind the ears soon confronts Fawn McKay Brodie's famous (or, in certain LDS circles, infamous) biography of Joseph Smith. Quickly fulfilling Herbert Brayer's prophecy that it "will probably of be one of the most highly praised as well as highly condemned historical works of 1945," No Man Knows My History elicited both wholesale acclaim ("the best book about the Mormons so far published," Bernard De Voto enthused; a "definitive treatment," seconded her friend Dale Morgan) and whole-hearted condemnation ("the statement made by Joseph Smith that "no man knows my history," …

Religious Tolerance In Sixteenth-Century Switzerland, Edmund J. Campion Jan 2005

Religious Tolerance In Sixteenth-Century Switzerland, Edmund J. Campion

Swiss American Historical Society Review

People do not generally associate the sixteenth century in Europe with religious tolerance and such an attitude is understandable, but it overlooks the small but relatively tolerant country of Switzerland. Elsewhere in Europe there was then, in fact, a great deal of religious intolerance and persecution. A few examples will illustrate very nicely how intolerant other European countries were at that time toward other religions.

Spatial Distribution Of Land Type In Regression Models Of Pollutant Loading Jan 2005

Spatial Distribution Of Land Type In Regression Models Of Pollutant Loading

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

This paper proposes a method to improve landscape-pollution interaction regression models through the inclusion of a variable that describes the spatial distribution of a land type with respect to the pattern of runoff within a drainage catchment. The proposed index is used as an independent variable to enhance the strength, as quantified by R2 values, of regression relationships between empirical observations of in-stream pollutant concentrations and land type by considering the spatial distribution of key land-type categories within the sample point’s drainage area. We present an index that adds a new dimension of explanatory power when used in conjunction …

Early Mormon And Shaker Visions Of Sanctified Community, J. Spencer Fluhman Jan 2005

Early Mormon And Shaker Visions Of Sanctified Community, J. Spencer Fluhman

BYU Studies

Polly Knight's health was failing as she and her family trudged toward western Missouri. Having accepted Joseph Smith Jr. as God's prophet on earth, the Knights left heir Colesville, New York, farm and joined with other Mormon converts at Kirtland, Ohio, in 1831. Finding a brief respite there, they again set out, this time for the city of "Zion" that Joseph Smith said they would help build in Jackson County, Missouri. Worried that Polly was too ill to complete the trek, her family considered stopping in hopes she might recover. But "she would not consent to stop traveling," recalled her …

Spatial Modelling For Hydrological Response Behaviour Of An Arid Watershed, India – Remote Sensing And Gis Approach Jan 2005

Spatial Modelling For Hydrological Response Behaviour Of An Arid Watershed, India – Remote Sensing And Gis Approach

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

The paper discusses the applications of satellite remote sensing and GIS on characterization and spatial modeling of runoff and soil erosion of Birantiya Kalan, an arid watershed in the district of Pali, western Rajasthan. The watershed, with plains on the west and low to medium hills on the east, is among the watersheds selected under the National Watershed Development Project for Rainfed Areas by the Government of India in 1988. Indian Remote Sensing Satellite Data (IRS 1A/1B LISS II sensor) corresponding to pre-treatment (1988) and post-treatment (1996) periods were used to study changes in the land use/ land cover and …

Metabolic Profile And Live Weight Of Male Llamas (Lama Glama) Fed With Barley Hay, Alfalfa, And Quinoa Scrub, Karla Coaquira Arratia Jan 2005

Metabolic Profile And Live Weight Of Male Llamas (Lama Glama) Fed With Barley Hay, Alfalfa, And Quinoa Scrub, Karla Coaquira Arratia

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years llamas have attracted great national and international interest for their qualities of human food production, fiber production for high-quality textiles, and for being an ecological animal. These qualities have allowed a resurgence of cultivating them for commercial ends. One of the principal limits is secure food for allowing a constant, sustainable growth. The objective of this study was to evaluate the metabolic profile and live weight of male llamas (Lama glama) fed with barley hay, alfalfa hay, and quinoa scrub. The fieldwork occurred in metabolic chambers in a closed environment at the demonstration farm of the Benson …

Feed Conversion Index In Two Populations And Two Lines Of Guinea Pigs For Meat Production, Kathia Jordán Vargas Jan 2005

Feed Conversion Index In Two Populations And Two Lines Of Guinea Pigs For Meat Production, Kathia Jordán Vargas

Theses and Dissertations

The guinea pig (Cavia aperea porcellus) is an alternative to improve human nutrition because its meat is of excellent taste and quality. Thus, it is an important nutritional source. The feed conversion index was determined under the basic (forage) and mixed (forage and concentrate) diets during the growth phase. This was done with both sexes located in the Tamborada and MEJOCUY populations, using the AUQUI, and San Luis lines. This was done in order to quantify how many kilograms of feed an animal must eat to gain one kilogram of live weight. The animals were randomly distributed into individual pools …

Coordination Variables, Coordination Functions, And Cooperative Timing Missions, Randal Beard, Timothy W. Mclain Jan 2005

Coordination Variables, Coordination Functions, And Cooperative Timing Missions, Randal Beard, Timothy W. Mclain

Faculty Publications

Sponsorship: AFOSR, DARPA. This paper presents a solution strategy for achieving cooperative timing among teams of vehicles. Based on the notion of coordination variables and coordination functions, the strategy facilitates cooperative timing by requiring acceptably low levels of communication and computation. The application of the coordination variable/function approach to trajectory planning problems for teams of unmanned air vehicles with timing constraints is described. Three types of timing constraints are considered: simultaneous arrival, tight sequencing, and loose sequencing. Simulation results demonstrating the viability of the approach are presented.

Maternal Education And Child Nutritional Status In Bolivia: Finding The Links, Michelle Bellessa Frost, Renata Forste, David W. Haas Jan 2005

Maternal Education And Child Nutritional Status In Bolivia: Finding The Links, Michelle Bellessa Frost, Renata Forste, David W. Haas

Faculty Publications

This study models various pathways linking maternal education and child nutritional status in Bolivia, using a national sample of children. Pathways examined include socioeconomic status, health knowledge, modern attitudes towards health care, female autonomy, and reproductive behavior. The data come from the 1998 Bolivia Demographic and Health Survey. Logistic regression results suggest that socioeconomic factors are the most important pathways linking maternal education and child nutritional status, and that modern attitudes about health care also explain the impact of education. Health care knowledge accounts for less of the effect of maternal education on child nutritional status, with autonomy being the …

Property Taxation Of Multifamily Housing: An Empirical Analysis Of Vertical And Horizontal Equity, Gary C. Cornia, Barrett A. Slade Jan 2005

Property Taxation Of Multifamily Housing: An Empirical Analysis Of Vertical And Horizontal Equity, Gary C. Cornia, Barrett A. Slade

Faculty Publications

This paper analyzes the uniformity of the property appraisal outcome for multifamily apartment complexes in Phoenix, Arizona. Specifically, it investigates vertical and horizontal equity and equity across assessment methods. Apartment transactions and assessed valuations are examined over a fiveyear period (1998–2002). Once possible bias in model specification is accounted for, no evidence of vertical inequity in the sample is found. However, there is modest evidence of horizontal inequity: the results suggest that complex size and geographic location are more difficult for the assessor to value uniformly. There is also inequity between small and large properties, as represented by two different …

Creating Breadth In Business Education Through Service-Learning, Paul C. Godfrey, Louise M. Illes, Gregory R. Berry Jan 2005

Creating Breadth In Business Education Through Service-Learning, Paul C. Godfrey, Louise M. Illes, Gregory R. Berry

Faculty Publications

We argue service-learning pedagogy and the associated educational experiences provide a partial solution to the significant problem of narrowness in business education. Servicelearning pedagogy seeks to balance academic rigor with practical relevance, set in a context of civic engagement, which furnishes students with a broader and, we argue, richer, educational experience. We present four specific critiques of business education: (1) the business curriculum focuses on functional and discrete rather than cross-functional and holistic knowledge; (2) coursework emphasizes practical problem-solving “tool kits” rather than deep theoretical knowledge; (3) the underlying paradigm of business education views humanity and human interactions in purely …

Equilibrium Underdiversification And The Preference For Skewness, Todd Mitton, Keith Vorkink Jan 2005

Equilibrium Underdiversification And The Preference For Skewness, Todd Mitton, Keith Vorkink

Faculty Publications

We develop a one-period model of investor asset holdings where investors have heterogeneous preference for skewness. Introducing heterogeneous preference for skewness allows the model's investors, in equilibrium, to underdiversify. We find suppport for our model's three key implications using a dataset of 60,000 individual investor accounts. First, we document that the portfolio returns of underdiversified investors are substantially more positively skewed than those of diversified investors. Second, we show that the apparent mean-variance inefficiency of underdiversified investors can be largely explained by the fact that investors sacrifice mean-variance efficiency for higher skewness exposure. Furthermore, contrary to the asset-pricing predictions of …

Perspectives On Curriculum Construction At The Postsecondary Level: Contexts, Approaches, Principles, Heidi Byrnes Jan 2005

Perspectives On Curriculum Construction At The Postsecondary Level: Contexts, Approaches, Principles, Heidi Byrnes

Russian Language Journal

A curriculum is an attempt, wrote Stenhouse three decades ago (1975, 4), to communicate the essential principles and features of an educational proposal in such a form that it is open to critical scrutiny and capable of effective translation into practice.

If one applies that notion of curriculum to the foreign language field in general, and to second- or foreign-language learning in U.S. colleges and universities in particular, one is immediately confronted with a dilemma: how can we speak of a foreign-language curriculum at the college level when a principled approach that is open to scrutiny and that builds on …

Globalization, Internationalization, And Language Learning In Russia, Liudmila Verbitskaya Jan 2005

Globalization, Internationalization, And Language Learning In Russia, Liudmila Verbitskaya

Russian Language Journal

In reviewing international trends over the last few decades, two words— globalization and internationalization—inevitably come to mind. Thinkers around the world are pondering these processes, which are rooted in the technological and social changes of the last quarter of the twentieth century.

The notions of globalization and internationalization are obviously related, but exactly what do they mean? In The Globalization of Higher Education, Peter Scott (1998a) concludes that not only are the words not synonyms, but the processes they denote are radically different and even dialectically opposed.

Learners And Teachers: The Application Of Psychology To Second-Language Acquisition, Madeline Ehrman Jan 2005

Learners And Teachers: The Application Of Psychology To Second-Language Acquisition, Madeline Ehrman

Russian Language Journal

The successful acquisition of second languages depends as much on good psychology as it does on sound linguistics. Both teaching and learning can be enriched by understanding and applying basic psychological principles.

The speaking and reading performance of second-language learners has received a great deal of attention in areas of applied linguistics such as conversation analysis, speech production analysis, oral testing research, classroom interaction analysis, and task-based learning research.(Ellis, 1994). In addition to linguistic variables, researchers have examined psychological determinants of learner achievement in speech performance, among them “individual difference variables.” These relatively stable learner characteristics—including language aptitude, motivation, and …

Individual Difference Theory In Faculty Development: What Faculty Developers Should Know About Style, Betty Lou Leaver, Rebecca L. Oxford Jan 2005

Individual Difference Theory In Faculty Development: What Faculty Developers Should Know About Style, Betty Lou Leaver, Rebecca L. Oxford

Russian Language Journal

Over the past three decades and more, growing attention has been paid to the need to tailor instruction to meet the differing learning and affective styles of students. However, little has been written about doing the same for faculty.

Typically, the purpose of faculty development is to empower new and experienced teachers by providing information, enhancing self-confidence, and developing attitudes and beliefs favorable to effective teaching. Such empowerment usually requires teachers to change their teaching behaviors— and change does not come automatically or identically to all teachers. Rather, “teachers change in areas [in which] they are already primed to change, …

Change Agents And Change Agencies In Language Education: Implications For Langnet, Richard D. Brecht Jan 2005

Change Agents And Change Agencies In Language Education: Implications For Langnet, Richard D. Brecht

Russian Language Journal

Educational innovation is a richly satisfying enterprise, particularly in an age of rising demands and expanding technology. But unless the innovators have an explicit strategic plan and a dedicated system for diffusing their work, innovation is destined to have little or no impact on the teachers and learners for whom it is intended. That truth lies at the heart of the literature on the diffusion of innovation.
