Sending States’ Transnational Interventions In Politics, Culture, And Economics: The Historical Example Of Italy, Mark I. Choate Oct 2007

Sending States’ Transnational Interventions In Politics, Culture, And Economics: The Historical Example Of Italy, Mark I. Choate

Faculty Publications

This article uses archival evidence to study in depth the historical policies of Italy, as a classic sending state. Most of the mass migrations of a century ago came from multinational empires, but Italy was a recently formed independent state. Ambitious to benefit from emigration while assisting and protecting emigrants, Italy reached out to “Italians abroad” in several ways. For example, the state opened a low‐cost channel for remittances through a non‐profit bank; promoted Italian language education among Italian families abroad; supported Italian Chambers of Commerce Abroad; and subsidized religious missionary work among emigrants. Italy’s historical example of political innovation …

Desert Rodents Reduce Seedling Recruitment Of Salsola Paulsenii, William S. Longland Sep 2007

Desert Rodents Reduce Seedling Recruitment Of Salsola Paulsenii, William S. Longland

Western North American Naturalist

Heteromyid rodents in the deserts of North America have been shown to harvest large quantities of seeds of both native and introduced plants from soil seed banks, but rarely has the impact of this seed removal been demonstrated experimentally. I used a series of fenced plots (some of which excluded rodents) to demonstrate that heteromyids at a western Nevada study site can measurably reduce seed banks and subsequent seedling establishment of Salsola paulsenii, an introduced invasive weed that has become a significant problem over much of the desert Southwest. The frequency of S. paulsenii seedlings in both 2004 and …

Polymorphic Indian Ricegrass Populations Result From Overlapping Waves Of Migration, T. A. Jones, M. G. Redinbaugh, S. R. Larson, Y. Zhang, B. D. Dow Sep 2007

Polymorphic Indian Ricegrass Populations Result From Overlapping Waves Of Migration, T. A. Jones, M. G. Redinbaugh, S. R. Larson, Y. Zhang, B. D. Dow

Western North American Naturalist

Indian ricegrass (Achnatherum hymenoides [Roem. & Schult.] Barkworth) is a rangeland species native to western North America with populations that may exhibit distinct seed-size morphs borne on separate plants. These morphs are often associated with very different levels of seed dormancy. We compared RAPD profiles of the relatively infrequent and highly dormant jumbo seed morph to its more germinable small or large (non-jumbo) companion seed morphs collected from 9 sites where they were sympatric. Jumbo seed accessions from 9 additional sites that did not exhibit seed polymorphism were included to better sample this seed morph across the species' range. …

Aquatic Vertebrate Assemblages Of The Upper Clear Creek Watershed, California, Larry R. Brown, Jason T. May Sep 2007

Aquatic Vertebrate Assemblages Of The Upper Clear Creek Watershed, California, Larry R. Brown, Jason T. May

Western North American Naturalist

We sampled streams in the Upper Clear Creek Watershed in northwestern California in fall 2004 and fall 2005 to document assemblages of aquatic vertebrates and to provide resource managers with information on the importance of these assemblages in terms of regional biodiversity. We used single-pass backpack electrofishing to sample 15 sites in fall 2004 and the same 15 sites plus 4 new sites in fall 2005. We captured 10 fish taxa and 2 species of larval amphibians. Seven of the fish taxa were native species. Of the exotic species, only brook trout (Salvelinus fontinalis) occurred at more than …

Parallel Pso Using Mapreduce, Andrew Mcnabb, Christopher K. Monson, Kevin Seppi Sep 2007

Parallel Pso Using Mapreduce, Andrew Mcnabb, Christopher K. Monson, Kevin Seppi

Faculty Publications

In optimization problems involving large amounts of data, such as web content, commercial transaction information, or bioinformatics data, individual function evaluations may take minutes or even hours. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) must be parallelized for such functions. However, large-scale parallel programs must communicate efficiently, balance work across all processors, and address problems such as failed nodes. We present MapReduce Particle Swarm Optimization (MRPSO), a PSO implementation based on the MapReduce parallel programming model. We describe MapReduce and show how PSO can be naturally expressed in this model, without explicitly addressing any of the details of parallelization. We present a benchmark …

Development Of The Characteristics Of Science Questionnaire (Csq): Assessing Student Knowledge Of The Utah State Secondary Science Core Intended Learning Outcome 6 On The Nature Of Science, Bradford N. Talbert Sep 2007

Development Of The Characteristics Of Science Questionnaire (Csq): Assessing Student Knowledge Of The Utah State Secondary Science Core Intended Learning Outcome 6 On The Nature Of Science, Bradford N. Talbert

Theses and Dissertations

Teaching students about the nature of science is an important and necessary part of secondary science curricula. The Utah State Office of Education has provided specific guidelines called intended learning outcomes (ILOs) to teachers in the state. The ILOs are based on the national standards presented in the Project 2061 publications of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1990 and 1993. The ILOs are not tied to any one scientific discipline such as biology or chemistry, but are intended as global statements describing what scientists do and how scientific knowledge is gained. ILO 6 prescribes that students …

Irish Emigration And Immigration To North America, David S. Ouimette, David E. Rencher Sep 2007

Irish Emigration And Immigration To North America, David S. Ouimette, David E. Rencher

BYU Family Historian

Irish immigration to the United States and Canada has been marked by peak periods of mass migration in history. Major historical events have triggered the influx of large numbers of Irish immigrants seeking better wages, more comfortable lifestyles, and political or religious freedom. Careless stereotypes have been attached to the immigrants and their methods of travel and lifestyles, but there were numerous ways to immigrate to North America and each course had the potential to create the records needed to identify a home county or parish. Irish emigration across the Atlantic began in the early 1600s. Emigration patterns mirrored the …

Trade-Offs Between Social And Financial Performance, Gary Woller Sep 2007

Trade-Offs Between Social And Financial Performance, Gary Woller

Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review

True or False: Trade-offs occur between social performance and financial performance in microfinance. Conventional wisdom says true. Extending formal financial services to poor and hard-to-reach clientele necessarily entails higher costs and lower per unit returns and is, subsequently, harder to scale up. The trade-off inherent in this relationship creates incentives for microfinance institutions (MFIs) to move up-market and away from their traditional poor clientele—a phenomenon known as mission drift.

Researching Huguenot Settlers In Ireland, Vivien Costello Sep 2007

Researching Huguenot Settlers In Ireland, Vivien Costello

BYU Family Historian

This study is a genealogical research guide to French Protestant refugee settlers in Ireland, c. 1660–1760. It reassesses Irish Huguenot settlements in the light of new findings and provides a background historical framework. A comprehensive select bibliography is included. While there is no formal listing of manuscript sources, many key documents are cited in the footnotes. This work covers only French Huguenots; other Protestant Stranger immigrant groups, such as German Palatines and the Swiss watchmakers of New Geneva, are not featured.
