Iris Von Roten As A Feminist: Observations, Interpretations, And Impact Of Frauen Im Laufgitter, Regina Wecker
Iris Von Roten As A Feminist: Observations, Interpretations, And Impact Of Frauen Im Laufgitter, Regina Wecker
Swiss American Historical Society Review
PART ONE
ASPECTS OF AN IDENTITY
When Iris von Roten published her book Frauen im Laufgitter. Offene Worte zur Stellung der Frau (Women in the Playpen. Plain Words About the Situation of Women) in 1958, it caused a scandal. Her analysis of women's present social status and their political and economic situation in Switzerland was repudiated, von Roten and her book were showered with scorn, hatred, and ridicule, and even made the subject of a carnival farce in Basel (Kochli 1992: 101-118). Frauen im Laufgitter and its author were called "cold" and soulless, though it was rumored that …

Swiss Women's Suffrage Debated: Two Examples, Leo Schelbert
Swiss American Historical Society Review
PART TWO: HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES
To provide a taste of the thinking of Swiss people before Iris von Roten published her seminal work Frauen im Laufgitter in 1958 in Bern's Hallwag Verlag, some primary documents shall be presented. A first set reflects the parliamentary debate that was held on 12 December 1945 in the Swiss National Council, composed of the elected representatives of the cantons or member states of the Confederation. A second document is a statement of the theologian Arthur Rich (1910-1992) published in the Neue Zurcher Zeitung in November 1966. It responded to a circular which Zurich's anti-suffrage women …
The Architecture Of Instructional Theory, Andrew S. Gibbons, Clint P. Rogers
The Architecture Of Instructional Theory, Andrew S. Gibbons, Clint P. Rogers
Faculty Publications
This chapter joins a discussion of instructional theory that has been ongoing for nearly a century. It departs in some ways from prior discussions: (1) it considers instructional theory as a species of technological theory rather than as a type of scientific theory, a view expressed more fully elsewhere (Gibbons, 2003a), (2) it adopts the viewpoint articulated in earlier chapters of this book that there are multiple distinct bodies of technological theory that pertain to the work of instructional designers, (3) it attempts to articulate a particular view of the nature of two of those bodies of theory by describing …

Swiss American Historical Society Review
PART TWO: HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVES
A methodical perusal of biographical entries in encyclopedic works such as the Schweizer Lexikon ( 1998) or the Historische Lexikon der Schweiz (HLS), now in progress, brings to light a great many Swiss women who were active in the advocacy of women's equality, but who are far too little known. Some dedicated themselves to a specific issue, others were driven by a comprehensive vision of existing inequality to be remedied. They fought on a broad front against varied forms of male dominance. They hailed from the political right, center, and left, from the working class …

Long-Distance Interval Training Following Pre-Cooling With An Ice Vest, Ronald L. Hager, Iain Hunter, Gary W. Mack, Andrew R. Tegeder
Faculty Publications
This study evaluated how preparing for an interval workout, while wearing a cooling vest, affects core temperature (Tc), heart rate (HR), and interval time in long-distance runners. Nineteen male collegiate cross-country runners exercised under two different conditions: (a) wearing a Nike PreCool™ ice vest for one hour prior to the workout (30 minutes resting with the vest and 30 minutes while performing their warm-up); and (b) a control condition utilizing a traditional warm-up. Subjects performed 8 x 1000 m intervals. HR and Tc were measured prior to warm-up, immediately before the first interval, and after each interval. Tc measured before …

Or Best Offer: A Privacy Policy Negotiation Protocol, Eric G. Mercer, Kent E. Seamons, Daniel D. Walker
Faculty Publications
Privacy policy languages, such as P3P, allow websites to publish their privacy practices and policies in machine readable form. Currently, software agents designed to protect users’ privacy follow a “take it or leave it” approach that is inflexible and gives the server ultimate control. Privacy policy negotiation is one approach to leveling the playing field by allowing a client to negotiate with a server to determine how that server collects and uses the client’s data. We present a privacy policy negotiation protocol, “Or Best Offer”, that includes a formal model for specifying privacy preferences and reasoning about privacy policies. The …

Aims. We assess the evolutionary status of the intriguing object Walker 90/V590 Mon, which is located about 20 arcmin northwest of the Cone Nebula near the center of the open cluster NGC 2264. This object, according to its most recent optical spectral type determination (B7), which we confirmed, is at least 3 mag too faint in V for the cluster distance, but it shows the classical signs of a young pre-main sequence object, such as highly variable H emission, Mg II emission, IR excess, UV continuum, and optical variability. Methods. We analyzed a collection of archival and original data on …
Unamunian Microcosms: Four Short Stories In A New Translation Into English, Emily A. Davis
Unamunian Microcosms: Four Short Stories In A New Translation Into English, Emily A. Davis
Theses and Dissertations
Spanish writer Miguel de Unamuno's short fiction is neglected in both the academic and nonacademic communities, and it is especially underrepresented in English-language translation. This thesis constitutes a comprehensive approach to four short stories: "El que se enterró," "La manchita de la uña," "Mecanópolis," and "Batracófilos y batracófobos." A detailed exploration of thematic resonances among them, and between these and other works by Unamuno, precedes side-by-side translations of all four texts, of which only "Mecanópolis" has been previously published in English translation.

Comparative Phylogeography Of Codistributed Species Of Chilean Liolaemus (Squamata: Tropiduridae) From The Central-Southern Andean Range, Byron J. Adams, Pedro F. Victoriano, Juan Carlos Ortiz, Edgar Benavides, Jack W. Sites
Faculty Publications
In this study, we used a recently developed supertrees method to test for shared phylogeographical signal in partially overlapping geographical ranges of lizards of the genus Liolaemus from the Andean Range in south-central Chile. We reconstruct mtDNA gene trees for three partially codistributed species (Liolaemus tenuis, L. lemniscatus and L. pictus), and our sampling effort is sufficient to allow statistical tests of shared signal between the combinations L. tenuis-L. pictus, and L. tenuis-L. lemniscatus. For both combinations, standardized maximum agreement subtrees scores showed statistically significant signal for shared pattern in regions of overlap, as evaluated by randomization tests (P < 0.001 and < 0.05, respectively). The matrix representation with parsimony tree obtained from the combination of the three different gene trees revealed concordant phylogeographical associations of all species, and was consistent with the geographical association of intraspecific haploclades with three Chilean bioclimatic zones. A multidimensional scaling analysis of several climate variables showed highly significant differences among these zones, which further suggests that they may have contributed to similar patterns of intraspecific divergence across all three species. In the mesomorphic zone in Central Chile, the species L. tenuis and L. lemniscatus may have codiverged in response to shared orogenic vicariant events, which likely predominated over climatic events associated with cycles of glacial advance and retreat. In the hygromorphic zone in southern Chile, however, glacial cycles likely predominated in structuring the phylogeographical histories of L. tenuis and L. pictus, although important ecological differences between these two caution against broad generalizations at this point.
Automating Mini-Ontology Generation From Canonical Tables, Stephen G. Lynn
Automating Mini-Ontology Generation From Canonical Tables, Stephen G. Lynn
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis work we develop and test MOGO (a Mini-Ontology GeneratOr.) MOGO automates the generation of mini-ontologies from canonicalized tables of data. This will help anyone trying to organize large amounts of existing data into a more searchable and accessible form. By using a number of different heuristic rules for selecting, enhancing, and modifying ontology elements, MOGO allows users to automatically, semi-automatically, or manually generate conceptual mini-ontologies from canonicalized tables of data. Ideally, MOGO operates fully automatically while allowing users to intervene to direct and correct when necessary so that they can always satisfactorily complete the translation of canonicalized …
Real-Time Implementation Of Vision Algorithm For Control, Stabilization, And Target Tracking For A Hovering Micro-Uav, Beau J. Tippetts
Real-Time Implementation Of Vision Algorithm For Control, Stabilization, And Target Tracking For A Hovering Micro-Uav, Beau J. Tippetts
Theses and Dissertations
A lightweight, powerful, yet efficient quad-rotor platform was designed and constructed to obtain experimental results of completely autonomous control of a hovering micro-UAV using a complete on-board vision system. The on-board vision and control system is composed of a Helios FPGA board, an Autonomous Vehicle Toolkit daughterboard, and a Kestrel Autopilot. The resulting platform is referred to as the Helio-copter. An efficient algorithm to detect, correlate, and track features in a scene and estimate attitude information was implemented with a combination of hardware and software on the FPGA, and real-time performance was obtained. The algorithms implemented include a Harris feature …
Exploring The Common Design Space Of Dissimilar Assembly Parameterizations For Interdisciplinary Design, Brady M. Larson
Exploring The Common Design Space Of Dissimilar Assembly Parameterizations For Interdisciplinary Design, Brady M. Larson
Theses and Dissertations
The use of parametric CAD models in engineering, analysis, and optimization has greatly enhanced the effectiveness and efficiency of the product development process. Parametric models provide an attractive avenue for expansive design exploration. There still exists, however, a great challenge for products requiring design input from multiple disciplines. The collaboration of engineering disciplines can be hampered by many factors including: competing design objectives, communication of design changes, the use of different design and analysis software, and different geometry definitions. These obstacles become compounded when developing products at the assembly level. The use of solid parametric assembly models is not readily …
How Soviet Russia Liberated Women: The Soviet Model In Clara Zetkin's Periodical 'Die Kommunistische Fraueninternationale', Liberty Peterson Sproat
How Soviet Russia Liberated Women: The Soviet Model In Clara Zetkin's Periodical 'Die Kommunistische Fraueninternationale', Liberty Peterson Sproat
Theses and Dissertations
Clara Zetkin was celebrated in both Germany and the Soviet Union before World War II because of her active involvement in the communist movement. She wrote prolifically and preached the virtues of socialism. She concerned herself particularly with women's needs, arguing that women would respond best to a different form of agitation than that used among men. Zetkin asserted that communism was the only way to respond to women's concerns as mothers and that only state involvement in domestic life would allow women to be fully emancipated. Women needed freedom from household work and increased training and support to aid …
Identifying Factors That Produce Blame For Sexually Harassing Behavior, Colin W. Key
Identifying Factors That Produce Blame For Sexually Harassing Behavior, Colin W. Key
Theses and Dissertations
This research investigated how individual differences impact ratings of blame for sexual harassers and their victims and whether or not any relationships could be explained by defensive attribution theory. This theory claims that blame is a product of the relevance of the situation and the actors within that situation. Participants completed an online questionnaire in which they read hypothetical cases of sexual harassment. They rated the relevance of the situation and the individuals in the scenarios, attributed blame to hypothetical harassers and victims, as well as other information expected to predict ratings of blame. Results suggested that 1) defensive attribution …

What Is Economic Self-Reliance?, Paul C. Godfrey
Journal of Microfinance / ESR Review
Editor's Note: This issue begins our third year under the banner ESR Review. ESR stands for economic self-reliance, and we have published a number of themed issues addressing particular issues of development and self-reliance. When I first became involved in this project, my task was to define what we mean by economic selfreliance and to create a theory-based model of how individuals and families can become more self-reliant. The next four issues will center on the different elements of the model. This issue focuses on the role of human capital in economic development and self-reliance.
