Exploratory Factor Analysis Of Human Infant Temperament In The Rhesus Monkey, Daniel B. Kay, Michael Marsiske, Stephen J. Suomi, James Dee Higley Feb 2011

Exploratory Factor Analysis Of Human Infant Temperament In The Rhesus Monkey, Daniel B. Kay, Michael Marsiske, Stephen J. Suomi, James Dee Higley

Faculty Publications

The triadic model of human infant temperament, involving Negative Affectivity, Orienting/ Regulation, and Surgency/Extraversion factors, was applied to the rhesus neonate using exploratory factor analysis (EFA). Replicating and expanding earlier work in rhesus monkeys, the three factor solution produced latent constructs comparable to human neonatal temperament.

Parallel Particle Swarm Optimization And Large Swarms, Andrew W. Mcnabb Jan 2011

Parallel Particle Swarm Optimization And Large Swarms, Andrew W. Mcnabb

Theses and Dissertations

Optimization is the search for the maximum or minimum of a given objective function. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is a simple and effective evolutionary algorithm, but it may take hours or days to optimize difficult objective functions which are deceptive or expensive. Deceptive functions may be highly multimodal and multidimensional, and PSO requires extensive exploration to avoid being trapped in local optima. Expensive functions, whose computational complexity may arise from dependence on detailed simulations or large datasets, take a long time to evaluate. For deceptive or expensive objective functions, PSO must be parallelized to use multiprocessor systems and clusters efficiently. …

A Correlation-Based Method To Detect Weak Dependence, Yabing Luo Jan 2011

A Correlation-Based Method To Detect Weak Dependence, Yabing Luo

Theses and Dissertations

The focus of this thesis is an investigation of ways to detect weak dependence between two random variables X and Y. Our approach is to design tests for correlation rather than testing for dependence directly, since X and Y are not independent if they are not uncorrelated. We examined the magnified Pearson correlation after the Box-Cox transformation to determine whether X and Y are dependent. The results indicated that our approach not only has the potential to detect and evaluate the weak dependence cases that have previously been intractable, but also is conceptually simple and easy to implement.

Bats Of Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado: Composition, Reproduction, And Roosting Habits, Thomas J. O'Shea, Paul M. Cryan, E. Apple Snider, Ernest W. Valdez, Laura E. Ellison, Daniel J. Neubaum Jan 2011

Bats Of Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado: Composition, Reproduction, And Roosting Habits, Thomas J. O'Shea, Paul M. Cryan, E. Apple Snider, Ernest W. Valdez, Laura E. Ellison, Daniel J. Neubaum

Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist

We determined the bat fauna at Mesa Verde National Park (Mesa Verde) in 2006 and 2007, characterized bat elevational distribution and reproduction, and investigated roosting habits of selected species. We captured 1996 bats of 15 species in mist nets set over water during 120 nights of sampling and recorded echolocation calls of an additional species. The bat fauna at Mesa Verde included every species of bat known west of the Great Plains in Colorado, except the little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus). Some species showed skewed sex ratios, primarily due to a preponderance of males. Thirteen species of bats …

Shattered Glass: The Traditions Of Mormon Same-Sex Marriage Advocates Encounter Boyd K. Packer, Gregory L. Smith

Review of Books on the Book of Mormon 1989–2011

President Boyd K. Packer's October 2010 general conference address met with criticism from people opposed to the stance of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on same-sex marriage and homosexual acts. Critics portrayed President Packer's printed clarification of his words as backing down under pressure. Six of his past addresses are reviewed here demonstrating that the clarification matches his past teachings. Critics' claims about President Packer's views are also shown to be inconsistent with his published views over many years. The reaction of Mormons for Marriage (M4M), a group of Latter-day Saints dedicated to opposing the church's stance …

Nibley And The Environment, Terry B. Ball Jan 2011

Nibley And The Environment, Terry B. Ball

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Hugh Nibley cared deeply about creation and was passionate about our stewardship over the earth. His arguments in defense of the environment were informed by the disciplines he knew best: history, philosophy, and theology. From his study, research, and reasoning, Nibley drew several principles that seem to have directed his thoughts and crafted his sense of environmental stewardship. Four of these principles are discussed in this paper: (1) humankind has a divine mandate to properly care for creation; (2) humankind’s spiritual health and environmental heath are linked; (3) creation obeys, reverences, and provides for humankind, as humankind righteously cares for …

A Text-Critical Comparison Of The King James New Testament With Certain Modern Translations, Lincoln H. Blumell Jan 2011

A Text-Critical Comparison Of The King James New Testament With Certain Modern Translations, Lincoln H. Blumell

Studies in the Bible and Antiquity

This article renders a text-critical comparison of the King James New Testament and select modern translations of the New Testament. Specifically, it surveys twenty-two passages in the King James New Testament that have been omitted in most modern translations. The article then clarifies and explains why these verses have been omitted and asks whether such omissions ought to be accepted. While this study demonstrates that in most cases the readings in the King James Version are inferior in a text-critical sense and that they likely represent interpolations into the biblical text, there are a few cases where the King James …

Descriptions Of Old Laie, 1871-1921, Riley Moffat Jan 2011

Descriptions Of Old Laie, 1871-1921, Riley Moffat

Mormon Pacific Historical Society

Along with the few photographs of La’ie during the early plantation era from about 1865 to 1920, several people made verbal sketches of La’ie. La’ie and Hawai’i always have been considered exotic, and before photographs were common in newspapers, magazines and books, a verbal description was a highly developed means of sharing with readers what a place was like. It was meant to help a reader visualize a place the way we now use photographic images. We’ve all heard that a picture is worth a thousand words; here follows some examples of people using words in the place of a …

On Christ And Covenants: An Lds Reading Of Isaiah's Prophetic Call, David E. Bokovoy Jan 2011

On Christ And Covenants: An Lds Reading Of Isaiah's Prophetic Call, David E. Bokovoy

Studies in the Bible and Antiquity

This article illustrates that for Latter-day Saints, the Book of Mormon can function as an interpretive guide to Isaiah’s writings. The analysis explores some ways in which the Book of Mormon can aid in identifying textual meaning in the story of Isaiah’s prophetic commission, especially on the topic of Christ and covenants. Lehi’s call narrative in the Book of Mormon shares much in common with Isaiah 6. Based on analogy with Lehi’s comparable dream, LDS readers can connect the seraph that interacts personally with Isaiah to Jesus Christ—that is, the Being with great luster who descends out of heaven to …

Constructing Metaphoric Models Of Salvation: Matthew 20 And The Middle English Poem Pearl, Miranda Wilcox Jan 2011

Constructing Metaphoric Models Of Salvation: Matthew 20 And The Middle English Poem Pearl, Miranda Wilcox

Studies in the Bible and Antiquity

The parable of the laborers in the vineyard in Matthew 20:1–6 demonstrates the possibilities and limitations of constructing metaphoric models of salvation. It also exposes the inadequacy of applying human economic analogies to divine relations and invites its audience to consider the function and purpose of using metaphors to understand spiritual concepts. An anonymous fourteenth-century Middle English poem called Pearl retells this parable and questions whether terrestrial concepts of value and exchange should frame salvation as a transaction based on merit. The poem demonstrates in metaphoric models that heavenly relationships, particularly salvation and grace, operate on a different scale, not …

Reading Diderot's La Religieuse As An Evangelical Novel, Muriel Schmid Jan 2011

Reading Diderot's La Religieuse As An Evangelical Novel, Muriel Schmid

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

D enis Diderot's novel, La Religieuse, has traditionally been read as a diatribe against convent life. Diderot's critique is then described as twofold: first, he strongly condemns the common practice of forced vows; and second, he describes life in a convent as fundamentally unnatural, leading individuals to perverse behaviors. Suzanne Simonin, the third daughter of a Parisian lawyer, is the main character of the novel, and her fate illustrates Diderot's critique. As the reader discovers in the course of the narrative, her birth is the result of an affair, and her mother regards her illegitimate daughter as a source …

Redemption Of The Dead: Continuing Revelation After Joseph Smith, David L. Paulsen, Kendel J. Christensen, Martin Pulido, Judson Burton Jan 2011

Redemption Of The Dead: Continuing Revelation After Joseph Smith, David L. Paulsen, Kendel J. Christensen, Martin Pulido, Judson Burton

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

After Joseph Smith’s death, the Saints still had many questions regarding the soteriological problem of evil and the doctrines about redeeming the dead. This paper details what leaders of the church after Joseph Smith have said in response to these previously unanswered questions. They focus on the nature of Christ’s visit to the spirit world, those who were commissioned to preach the gospel to the departed spirits, the consequences of neglecting the gospel in mortality, and the extent and role of temple ordinances for those not eligible for celestial glory. This paper focuses on both the early and the late …

Enlightenment Sermon Studies: A Multidisciplinary Activity, Bob Tennant Jan 2011

Enlightenment Sermon Studies: A Multidisciplinary Activity, Bob Tennant

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

The past two decades have seen a collective reconsideration of the positions occupied by religion in the eighteenth century, amounting to a fundamental shift in historiography. The revived study of the period's sermon literature seems to contribute to this. The present essay suggests the need for more interdisciplinary cooperation in better defining sermon studies and presents four questions about sermons to scholars working on the British Enlightenment, and, more generally, the Long Eighteenth Century, which will be referred to as "our period": What are the characteristics of the corpus? What is distinctive about the relationship of sermons to theological and …

Religion In The Age Of Enlightenment: Putting John Wesley In Context, Jeremy Gregory Jan 2011

Religion In The Age Of Enlightenment: Putting John Wesley In Context, Jeremy Gregory

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

Wesley's long life ( 1703-91) spanned almost the whole of the eighteenth century, and any attempt to understand him undoubtedly needs to include some sense of the period in which he lived. There have, of course, been many attempts to evoke Wesley's context, whether broadly defined-as in the thousands of books and scholarly articles that have been written about the era in general, ranging from the economy, politics, and society to cultural, intellectual, and religious matters (and much else besides), or in the various studies that have more directly positioned Wesley, and early Methodism, within his, and its, time. Most …

Accounting For Instream Lakes When Interpolating Stream Water Chemistry Observations Jan 2011

Accounting For Instream Lakes When Interpolating Stream Water Chemistry Observations

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Direct monitoring of stream water chemistry is an increasingly important tool for securing stream water quality and assessing stream ecological functioning as it relates to overall ecosystem health. Such monitoring is often discontinuous in spatial extent and, thus, needs to be interpolated at unsampled locations if the desired end product is a continuous map of stream water chemistry. Recently there have been major advances in the use and development of geostatistical methods (such as kriging) for interpolating between observations of stream water chemistry within stream networks. This study investigated the influence of distance definition on interpolation of synoptically collected stream …

Much Ado And Pride And Prejudice: Twin Characters And Parallel Plots, Ace G. Pilkington Jan 2011

Much Ado And Pride And Prejudice: Twin Characters And Parallel Plots, Ace G. Pilkington

Quidditas

Much Ado About Nothing and Pride and Prejudice are telling a similar story which centers on Beatrice and Benedick in the first case and Darcy and Elizabeth in the second. The article also argues that Jane Austen had Much Ado in mind while writing Pride and Prejudice, but this second proposition is not readily provable (as such borrowings often are) by direct quotation and comparison. Jane Austen’s familiarity with Shakespeare and the similarity of her plot suggest the truth of this second proposition, but more important for this paper are the comparisons between the narratives themselves since they tell important …
