De Novo Genome Assembly And Snp Marker Development Of Pyrenophora Semeniperda, Marcus Makina Soliai
De Novo Genome Assembly And Snp Marker Development Of Pyrenophora Semeniperda, Marcus Makina Soliai
Theses and Dissertations
Pyrenophora semeniperda (anamorph Drechslera campulata) is a necrotrophic fungal seed pathogen of a variety of grass genra and species, including Bromus tectorum, an exotic grass that has invaded many natural ecosystems of the U.S. Intermountain West. As a natural seed pathogen of B. tectorum, P. semeniperda has potential as a biocontrol agent due to its effectiveness at killing dormant B. tectorum seeds; however, few genetic resources exist for this fungus. Here, the genome assembly of a P. semeniperda isolate using 454 GS-FLX genomic and paired-end pyrosequencing techniques is presented. The total assembly is 32.5 Mb and contains …
Chemical Potential Perturbation: A Method To Predict Chemical Potentials In Periodic Molecular Simulations, Stan G. Moore, Dean R. Wheeler
Chemical Potential Perturbation: A Method To Predict Chemical Potentials In Periodic Molecular Simulations, Stan G. Moore, Dean R. Wheeler
Faculty Publications
A new method, called chemical potential perturbation (CPP), has been developed to predict the chemical potential as a function of density in periodic molecular simulations. The CPP method applies a spatially varying external force field to the simulation, causing the density to depend upon position in the simulation cell. Following equilibration the homogeneous (uniform or bulk) chemical potential as a function of density can be determined relative to some reference state after correcting for the effects of the inhomogeneity of the system. We compare three different methods of approximating this correction. The first method uses the van der Waals density …
Automated Delay Estimation At Signalized Intersections: Phase I Concept And Algorithm Development, Taylor R. Forbush
Automated Delay Estimation At Signalized Intersections: Phase I Concept And Algorithm Development, Taylor R. Forbush
Theses and Dissertations
Currently there are several methods to measure the performance of surface streets, but their capabilities in dynamically estimating vehicle delay are limited. The objective of this research is to develop a method to automate traffic delay estimation in real-time using existing field traffic data collection technologies. This research has focused on method and algorithm development that can be applied to existing technologies. Two algorithms were developed to run automatically using Microsoft Excel and Visual Basic to calculate traffic delay from data collected from existing vehicle detection. The algorithms were developed using computer modeling software to simulate different lane configurations. The …

A New Policy In Church School Work: The Founding Of The Lds Supplementary Religious Education Movement, 1890-1930, Brett David Dowdle
Theses and Dissertations
The following thesis is a study of the founding years of the Mormon supplementary religious education between 1890 and 1930. It examines Mormonism's shift away from private denominational education towards a system of supplementary religious education programs at the elementary, high school, and college levels. Further, this study examines the role that supplementary religious education played in the changes between the nineteenth and the twentieth centuries. During the 1870s and 1880s, Utah's territorial schools became an important part of the battles over polygamy and the control of Utah. As the Federal Government began to wrest control of the schools from …
Learning Languages Through The Media: Toward An Understanding Of The Mediated Language Acquisition Process And The Motivation Cycle Of Mediated Language Acquisition, Kenneth F. Trent
Theses and Dissertations
Utilizing in-depth interviews and constant comparative analysis through a qualitative approach, this research study examined the development of second language acquisition of US immigrants via the mass media as a part of the acculturation process. Nine international students (or international spouses of students) of a major midwestern university participated in 25-60 minute interviews. Based on participant responses, the author formulated the mediated language acquisition process, or the process by which the participants acquired English as an additional language with the help of the mass media. Additionally, motivation was found to be the primary indicator of the rate of language acquisition. …
Let Me See My Feedback: A Phenomenological Exploration Of The Feedback-Receiving Process At A University Counseling Center, David Doty Dayton
Let Me See My Feedback: A Phenomenological Exploration Of The Feedback-Receiving Process At A University Counseling Center, David Doty Dayton
Theses and Dissertations
This study is a phenomenological investigation of psychotherapists' experience receiving quantitative and evaluative feedback on job performance. Participants were licensed psychologists working at a university counseling center. They were given feedback reports that compared their clients' psychotherapy outcomes with the outcomes of their colleagues' clients. Psychotherapy outcomes were measured using the Outcome-Questionnaire 45 (OQ-45), a self-report outcome instrument designed for tracking client progress through repeated measurement. Feedback reports included data about where psychotherapists' outcomes ranked (in quartiles) in comparison to the rest of the counseling center. Interviews were conducted with participants to gain a deeper understanding of their experience receiving …
Valuing And Defending: A New Natural Law Approach To The Family, Stephen Wade Francis
Valuing And Defending: A New Natural Law Approach To The Family, Stephen Wade Francis
Theses and Dissertations
Social science theories applied to the family make certain assumptions in the analytic categories of value-neutrality vs. value-ladenness, positivism vs. hermeneutics, and determinism vs. moral agency. New natural law, a different theory from the body of classical forms of natural law, provides a unique approach to the study of the family. New natural law provides a defense for the traditional conjugal family as well as provides difference conclusions and implications for empirical research.
The Origins Of The Maya: A Comparative Analysis Of Narratives, Thomasina Ilene Morris
The Origins Of The Maya: A Comparative Analysis Of Narratives, Thomasina Ilene Morris
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis is to document the changes in archaeological origin narratives concerning the lowland Preclassic Maya. This was accomplished by tracking the changes in four major narratives over several decades. These narratives include Herbert J. Spinden's Ancient Civilizations of Mexico and Central America; The Ancient Maya written by Sylvanus G. Morley, with additional editors, George Brainerd, Robert J. Sharer, and Loa Traxler; Michael D. Coe's The Maya, and Richard E.W. Adams's Prehistoric Mesoamerica. The specific parts of the narratives analyzed were the origins of agriculture, ceramic technology, writing, and monumental architecture. Changes in metaphorical language …
The "Crafting" Of Austen: Handicraft, Arts And Crafts, And The Reception Of Austen During The Victorian Period, Natalie Quinn
The "Crafting" Of Austen: Handicraft, Arts And Crafts, And The Reception Of Austen During The Victorian Period, Natalie Quinn
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis addresses the significant but often overlooked relationship between Jane Austen's works and the body of criticism about them and the two major craft movements of the nineteenth century: the Handicraft Movement and the Arts and Crafts Movement. The connections occur at two important moments during that century—first, at the moment of Austen's career during the Regency/Romantic period, and second, at the Victorian moment of the years surrounding the 1869 publication of James Edward Austen-Leigh's Memoir about Austen. In both of these moments, critics and reviewers repeatedly respond to Austen's life and works by using craft-related diction. This diction …
Variable Selection And Parameter Estimation Using A Continuous And Differentiable Approximation To The L0 Penalty Function, Douglas Nielsen Vanderwerken
Variable Selection And Parameter Estimation Using A Continuous And Differentiable Approximation To The L0 Penalty Function, Douglas Nielsen Vanderwerken
Theses and Dissertations
L0 penalized likelihood procedures like Mallows' Cp, AIC, and BIC directly penalize for the number of variables included in a regression model. This is a straightforward approach to the problem of overfitting, and these methods are now part of every statistician's repertoire. However, these procedures have been shown to sometimes result in unstable parameter estimates as a result on the L0 penalty's discontinuity at zero. One proposed alternative, seamless-L0 (SELO), utilizes a continuous penalty function that mimics L0 and allows for stable estimates. Like other similar methods (e.g. LASSO and SCAD), SELO produces sparse solutions because the penalty function is …
"A Considered Conversion": The Conscious Choice To Accept Christianity By The Populace Of Iceland And Greenland In The Era Of Scandinavian Conversion, Robert A. Burt
Theses and Dissertations
A Considered Conversion: The Conscious Choice to Accept Christianity by the Populace of Iceland and Greenland in the Era of Scandinavian Conversion Robert A. Burt Department of History, BYU Master of Arts Most studies of the Christianization of Scandinavia attribute the phenomenon to the influence of powerful kings. However, many times the conversion experiences of Iceland and Greenland are either ignored, or tied to the influence of these distant kings. This thesis unites sociological ideas relating to conversion along social and familial lines, ideas introduced by Roger Stark and Rodney Finke, with historical details of Icelandic and Greenland family genealogies …
The Hapsburg And The Heretics: An Examination Of Charles V'S Failure To Act Militarily Against The Protestant Threat (1519-1556), Christian R. Kemp
The Hapsburg And The Heretics: An Examination Of Charles V'S Failure To Act Militarily Against The Protestant Threat (1519-1556), Christian R. Kemp
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines Charles V's inability to take decisive military action against the Protestant threat in Germany before 1546. It treats modern historiography on Charles V in Germany. The thesis offers a new theory concerning religious motivation for the delay. Charles was a man of deep and devoted faith in the Catholic Church and consequently, was unable to accept the possibility that any individual would doubt or abandon that persuasion without calculated intention or gross error. Charles was influenced by the Humanistic cries for reform in his age. As a result, Charles, a strong advocate for reform, declined military action …
Emulating Gossip Girl: Aggressive And Prosocial Material In Adolescent Novels And Associations With Behavior, Laura Ann Stockdale
Emulating Gossip Girl: Aggressive And Prosocial Material In Adolescent Novels And Associations With Behavior, Laura Ann Stockdale
Theses and Dissertations
Decades of researchers have found that exposure to aggressive content in multiple forms of media is associated with both physically (Bushman & Anderson, 2001) and relationally (Coyne, Nelson, Graham-Kevan, Keister, & Grant, 2010) aggressive behavior. Similarly, other researchers have found that exposure to prosocial content in multiple forms of media is associated with increased prosocial behavior (Mares & Underwood, 2008). While these associations have been studied in a variety of media, books as a form of media have received less research attention. The current study examined the associations between the content of adolescents' favorite novels and their normative beliefs about …
Reciprocal Communication As A Form Of Nonverbal Communication: A Qualitative Approach, John Christian Penrod
Reciprocal Communication As A Form Of Nonverbal Communication: A Qualitative Approach, John Christian Penrod
Theses and Dissertations
The current state of psychological research in nonverbal communication is briefly summarized and several problems are noted. Reciprocal communication (RC) is suggested, defined, and qualitatively investigated as a way of describing the experience of emotional compatibility in communication, with an emphasis on form, degree, and timing as fundamental aspects of nonverbal communication. Support for three different levels of emotional compatibility (fully, partially, and nonreciprocal) is found. Variation in the interpretation of nonverbal communication when communication is perceived as either intentional or unintentional is noted, and a system of categorizing reciprocal communication is suggested. Further patterns in nonverbal communication are observed, …
Effects Of Damköhler Number On Flame Extinction And Reignition In Turbulent Non-Premixed Flames Using Dns, David O. Lignell, Jacqueline H. Chen, Hans A. Schmutz
Effects Of Damköhler Number On Flame Extinction And Reignition In Turbulent Non-Premixed Flames Using Dns, David O. Lignell, Jacqueline H. Chen, Hans A. Schmutz
Faculty Publications
Results from a parametric study of flame extinction and reignition with varying Damköhler number using direct numerical simulation are presented. Three planar, non-premixed ethylene jet flames were simulated at a constant Reynolds number of 5120. The fuel and oxidizer stream compositions were varied to adjust the steady laminar extinction scalar dissipation rate, while maintaining constant flow and geometric conditions. Peak flame extinction varies from approximately 40% to nearly global blowout as the Damköhler number decreases. The degree of extinction significantly affects the development of the jets and the degree of mixing of fuel, oxidizer, and combustion products prior to reignition. …
The War Without A Name: The Use Of Propaganda In The Decolonization War Of Algeria, Benjamin J. Sparks
The War Without A Name: The Use Of Propaganda In The Decolonization War Of Algeria, Benjamin J. Sparks
Theses and Dissertations
The Algerian war for independence, 1954-1962, also known as the War Without a Name due to its lack of recognition as a war by the French government, remains an indelible scar on the face of France. The Algerian war represents one of the most critical moments in modern French history since the French Revolution (Le Sueur 256), putting into question the motto of the French republic, "liberté, égalité, fraternité". This thesis will show that although the French won the war militarily they lost the war of ideas, that of propaganda and persuasion. Thus, this thesis will demonstrate that propaganda by …
Hierarchical Bayesian Methods For Evaluation Of Traffic Project Efficacy, Andrew Nolan Olsen
Hierarchical Bayesian Methods For Evaluation Of Traffic Project Efficacy, Andrew Nolan Olsen
Theses and Dissertations
A main objective of Departments of Transportation is to improve the safety of the roadways over which they have jurisdiction. Safety projects, such as cable barriers and raised medians, are utilized to reduce both crash frequency and crash severity. The efficacy of these projects must be evaluated in order to use resources in the best way possible. Five models are proposed for the evaluation of traffic projects: (1) a Bayesian Poisson regression model; (2) a hierarchical Poisson regression model building on model (1) by adding hyperpriors; (3) a similar model correcting for overdispersion; (4) a dynamic linear model; and (5) …
Sacred Union And Sacred Violence In Tournier's Gilles Et Jeanne, David Doyle Drake
Sacred Union And Sacred Violence In Tournier's Gilles Et Jeanne, David Doyle Drake
Theses and Dissertations
Written in 1983, the novella Gilles et Jeanne seems to be one of Michel Tournier's simpler works at first glance. Yet, for all of its simplicity, Tournier does not repress his desire to lace the tale with metaphoric and metaphysical symbolism. It is through a symbolic marriage on the battlefield that Tournier links the two characters in a sort of mystical union. All of the crimes following this ritual that precipitated Gilles descent into depravity were in fact an attempt to reunite with the departed spirit of his "spouse", either by mimetically recreating the circumstances of her death, or by …
Letting Go And The Silence That Remains: The Effects Of Translating Point-Of-View From Text To Film In The Remains Of The Day And Never Let Me Go, Jennifer L. Price
Letting Go And The Silence That Remains: The Effects Of Translating Point-Of-View From Text To Film In The Remains Of The Day And Never Let Me Go, Jennifer L. Price
Theses and Dissertations
Kazuo Ishiguro's novels The Remains of the Day and Never Let Me Go exhibit many of the same characteristics as his other works. Out of all of those works, however, only these two novels have been adapted to film as of yet. Because of Ishiguro's reliance on first-person narration and point-of-view his novels are particularly more problematic to adapt to screen. This phenomenon is partially due to the audio-visually dependent medium of film and the camera lens' limitations when it comes to exhibiting character interiority. Therefore, the effect of the translation to screen for both of these films is a …

Facies Analysis And Reservoir Characterization Of Subtidal, Intertidal, And Supratidal Zones Of The Mudstone-Rich Entrada Sandstone, South-Central Utah, Tanner Charles Hicks
Theses and Dissertations
Understanding thickness variation and facies transitions in the mudstone-rich part of the Upper Middle Jurassic (Callovian) Entrada Sandstone depositional system is critical for constraining the paleogeography and evaluating the economic potential of Utah's Entrada Sandstone. Facies of the Entrada Sandstone in south-central Utah are dominated by mudstone-rich intertidal facies that were widespread within the Jurassic seaway. Intertidal deposits interfinger basinward with subtidal ooid-bearing shoals and bars, and landward supratidal sabkha, and erg-margin eolian deposits. Three sections were measured to improve understanding of the lateral and vertical facies transitions. Variations in thickness indicate the rate of developing accommodation space was high …

The Mountain Meadows Massacre Of 1857: A Civilizational Encounter With Lessons For Us All, Michael Andregg
The Mountain Meadows Massacre Of 1857: A Civilizational Encounter With Lessons For Us All, Michael Andregg
Comparative Civilizations Review
Between September 7 and 11 of 1857, an emigrant (pioneer) wagon train was attacked while traveling through southern Utah toward California. At the end of the attack, 120 were killed, sparing only 17 or perhaps 18 children considered too young to talk about it. In the annals of war and slaughter, this could be considered a tiny event. But for the history of the Great Basin of North America, it was quite exceptional. More white pioneers died on the Mountain Meadows than during any other violent event in the history of the American west. For civilizationalists, this is important as …

This article summarizes the definitions, means, and research of adapting psychotherapy to clients’ cultural backgrounds. We begin by reviewing the prevailing definitions of cultural adaptation and providing a clinical example. We present an original meta-analysis of 65 experimental and quasiexperimental studies involving 8,620 participants. The omnibus effect size of d 5 .46 indicates that treatments specifically adapted for clients of color were moderately more effective with that clientele than traditional treatments. The most effective treatments tended to be those with greater numbers of cultural adaptations. Mental health services targeted to a specific cultural group were several times more effective than …
Thermodynamic, Sulfide, Redox Potential, And Ph Effects On Syngas Fermentation, Peng Hu
Thermodynamic, Sulfide, Redox Potential, And Ph Effects On Syngas Fermentation, Peng Hu
Theses and Dissertations
Recently, work in ethanol production is exploring the fermentation of syngas (primarily CO, CO2, and H2) following gasification of cellulosic biomass. The syngas fermentation by clostridium microbes utilizes the Wood-Ljungdahl metabolic pathway. Along this pathway, the intermediate Acetyl-CoA typically diverges to produce ethanol, acetic acid, and/or cell mass. To develop strategies for process optimization, a thermodynamic analysis was conducted that provided a detailed understanding of the favorability of the reactions along the metabolic pathway. Thermodynamic analysis provided identification of potentially limiting steps. Once these limiting reactions were identified, further thermodynamic analysis provided additional insights into the ways in which reaction …
