Documenting Tensions In Communities: Three Films By Eduardo Coutinho, Ryan James Norris
Theses and Dissertations
This project analyzes three documentaries that explore the inherent tensions and difficulties in building a sense of community in three different settings in Rio de Janeiro. The documentaries Boca de Lixo (1993), Santo forte (1999), and Edifício Master (2002) by Eduardo Coutinho present an in-depth look at the tensions inherent in developing communal identity based on vocation in Boca de Lixo, religion in Santo forte, and location in Edifício Master. Through these documentaries, Eduardo Coutinho presents the difficulties faced by different groups of people in Brazil as they explore the development of a sense of community. Boca de Lixo endeavors …
"You're Looking Good": Compliment Or Harassment?, David B. Mcmillan
"You're Looking Good": Compliment Or Harassment?, David B. Mcmillan
Theses and Dissertations
Whether an individual perceives an appearance compliment in the workplace as sexual harassment may depend on a number of factors such as the gender and/or status of the complimenter. Three hundred eighty-three (130 males, 253 females) participants completed an online survey in which they read and rated six different hypothetical vignettes imagining themselves as the recipient of an appearance compliment from a male superior, subordinate, and peer, as well as a female in each of those three status positions. Participants also filled out the Big Five Inventory (BFI; see John, Naumann, & Soto, 2008) in order to assess how personality …
Defining Critical Thinking For The 21st Century World Language Classroom, Bethany Rae Daniel
Defining Critical Thinking For The 21st Century World Language Classroom, Bethany Rae Daniel
Theses and Dissertations
Critical thinking has long been recognized as a valuable skill, both in education in general and within the world language teaching field specifically. In recent years, critical thinking has been identified as one of the 21st century skills that students need to succeed in modern society (Partnership, 2009). However, there is no clear, unifying definition of the term itself (Paul, 2004), and the definition of critical thinking is debated in many different fields without support from empirical data (Kuhn, 1999). Similarly, critical thinking has been often discussed in the literature as having great potential to facilitate language learning, and particularly …
Deicer Usage On Concrete And Asphalt Pavements In Utah, Chase David Thomas
Deicer Usage On Concrete And Asphalt Pavements In Utah, Chase David Thomas
Theses and Dissertations
The objectives of this research were to 1) compile winter maintenance data for the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) to directly compare concrete and asphalt pavements with regards to deicer usage and 2) determine if there is a statistical difference in deicer usage on concrete and asphalt pavements. To this end, three data sources were consulted for this research: Material Maintenance Quality Assurance (MMQA) database, UDOT road database, and Google Maps. The final compiled data set prepared for analysis in this research contained deicer quantities by deicer type, pavement surface areas by pavement material type, traffic, longitude, latitude, and elevation …
Water Fat Separation With Multiple-Acquisition Balanced Steady-State Free Precession Mri, Michael A. Mendoza
Water Fat Separation With Multiple-Acquisition Balanced Steady-State Free Precession Mri, Michael A. Mendoza
Theses and Dissertations
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is an important medical imaging technique for visualizing soft tissue structures in the body. It has the advantages of being noninvasive and, unlike x-ray, does not rely on ionizing radiation for imaging. In traditional hydrogen-based MRI, the strongest measured signals are generated from the hydrogen nuclei contained in water and fat molecules.Reliable and uniform water fat separation can be used to improve medical diagnosis. In many applications the water component is the primary signal of interest, while the fat component represents a signal which can obscure the underlying pathology or other features of interest. In other …
Benemérito De Las Américas: The Beginning Of A Unique Church School In Mexico, Barbara E. Morgan
Benemérito De Las Américas: The Beginning Of A Unique Church School In Mexico, Barbara E. Morgan
BYU Studies
In 1957, President David O. McKay instructed Church leaders to investigate creating Church-sponsored schools in Mexico. The vision of Church leaders reached beyond educating the students and focused on training faithful Latter-day Saints that would teach and influence children and youth throughout Latin America. Marion Romney and others assessed the educational needs of Church members in Mexico; membership in the Church reached twenty-five thousand by 1961. They worked to find and purchase land, develop building plans, and select directors for these Church schools. They created a society that had the legal authority to purchase land and run schools in Mexico, …

Children's Recognition Of Pride: An Experimental Approach, Darren Jason Garcia
Children's Recognition Of Pride: An Experimental Approach, Darren Jason Garcia
Theses and Dissertations
Pride is elicited when a child takes credit for an achievement or exceeds a socially valued standard or expectation. Evidence suggests that pride has a distinct nonverbal expression that is recognized by adults across cultures (Tracy & Robins, 2004). Research examining when children recognize pride has yielded age discrepancies between studies that use forced-choice response formats and those that use spontaneous-response formats. Differences in children's ability to use and comprehend language may account for some of these differences. The purpose of this thesis was to examine the age at which children reliably recognize pride, while minimizing the need for children …

An Investigation Of The Asit Problem-Solving Method On Middle School Technology Education Student's Ability To Produce Creative Solutions, Jared Aaron Merrill
Theses and Dissertations
This study compared two groups of students being instructed in various methods of problem solving over a two-week period. The control group was instructed using the standard Career and Technology Education (CTE) Introduction curriculum on using brainstorming to solve problems. The treatment group was instructed using a structured problem solving method developed to help focus problem solving on finding a solution that satisfies the conditions. Students were selected from 7th grade students at a suburban middle school in Utah. The independent variable in this study was the type of problem solving instruction received. The dependent variables of interest were the …

An Investigation Of Practices And Tools That Enabled Technology-Mediated Caring In An Online High School, Andrea Velasquez, Charles R. Graham, Richard E. West
Faculty Publications
The ethic of care has been an important part of the dialogue related to learning in traditional K-12 learning environments particularly because emotional relationships and caring pedagogies have been shown to be particularly important for adolescent learners. However, as online learning has become increasingly popular, there are concerns about the perceived impersonal nature of the online medium, and how this might particularly affect adolescent learners. The purpose of this study was to examine technology choices when experiencing caring interactions in the online schooling context of Mountain Heights Academy (formerly Open High School of Utah). The caring experience of two teacher …

The Rey L. Pratt Center for Latin American Studies is new to the BYU scene. I created the Center at the request of Dr. Thomas Pearcy. This was done to assist students, faculty, and staff, as well as any other interested parties, in their studies of Latin America. The center is located at http://fhss.byuedu/history/pr@itt The academic portion of the center, including photos, documents, and additional links containing more information, is found in the resources section. As time went on, it became obvious that the Rey L. Pratt Center needed to be more than just a hub of links. It needed …
An Investigation Into The Mechanisms Of Formation Of The Hard Zone In Fsw X65, Jacob D. Allred
An Investigation Into The Mechanisms Of Formation Of The Hard Zone In Fsw X65, Jacob D. Allred
Theses and Dissertations
Friction stir welding (FSW) of HSLA steel commonly produces a hard zone (HZ) on the advancing side (AS) of the weld. Despite its detrimental effects on weld toughness, the mechanisms of its formation have not been thoroughly investigated and are not well understood. This paper investigates the various mechanisms in FSW believed to affect the weld HZ, namely: strain, strain-rate, peak temperature and cooling rate. Gleeble tests indicate that strain and strain rate have negligible effects on weld HZ with cooling rate and peak temperature as dominant effects. Jominy tests resulted in cooling rate having 270% greater influence than peak …
"You've Got To Be Carefully Taught": Reflections On War, Imperialism And Patriotism In America's South Pacific, Jayna D. Butler
"You've Got To Be Carefully Taught": Reflections On War, Imperialism And Patriotism In America's South Pacific, Jayna D. Butler
Theses and Dissertations
Underneath the romance, comedy and exoticism, South Pacific is a story that questioned core American values, exploring issues of race and power at a time when these topics were intensely relevant-the original opened just four years post WWII, on the heels of Roosevelt's aggressive expansionist response to domestic instabilities. Much has been written about the depiction of war and racial prejudice in South Pacific. However, examining such topics in the context of their cultural and political moment (both in 1949 and 2008) and through the lens of Terry Eagleton's unique take on morality, is not only a fascinating study, but …

Swiss American Historical Society Review
The library from which this bibliography is drawn grew out of a longheld passion to know and to experience Switzerland, the land of my ancestors. As a young boy and with a lasting coziness, I recall falling asleep hearing my Swiss elders tell stories far into the night, stories of everyday life in Switzerland and stories of Switzerland's place in history. These stories fascinated me. I wanted to know what life was like in this far-away place. Readings about Switzerland began with casual book purchases. My fascination was greatly intensified when I would come across books descriptive of everyday life …
Predicting Career Outcome Measures Using An Internship Evaluation Instrument: The Internship Profiling Questionnaire, Christopher Terao Silva
Predicting Career Outcome Measures Using An Internship Evaluation Instrument: The Internship Profiling Questionnaire, Christopher Terao Silva
Theses and Dissertations
Internships have become an integral part of post-secondary education, while also serving as a means for students to distinguish themselves as job candidates. Although internship programs have formally been in place for over a hundred years, surprisingly little research has been done into the topic, even though more than three out of four students participate in at least one internship before they graduate college. The purpose of this study is to develop and test an internship evaluation tool that will help educators distinguish the high quality internship opportunities from low quality ones. Based on management profiling questionnaires that became popular …
Committees Vs. Curators: The Use Of Power And Knowledge In The Alderney Museum Of The Channel Islands, Aubree Banton
Committees Vs. Curators: The Use Of Power And Knowledge In The Alderney Museum Of The Channel Islands, Aubree Banton
Library Research Grants
The Alderney Museum is owned by the States of Alderney, but a group of elected volunteers known as the Alderney Society Council (ASC) controls the various aspects of the day-to-day running of the Museum. The Council employed a series of graduate student curators from 2006-2013 to perform tasks, such as accessioning and auditing. Unfortunately the ASC, which is composed of laymen, and the curator, who is a trained professional, frequently have conflicting ideas about how to run the Museum. This often leads to contention between those involved and creates a constant competition for control. In this paper I will present …

An Empirical Experiment On Service Recovery Design, Marc Preston Bernhisel, Dr. Kristie Seawright
Journal of Undergraduate Research
“Mistakes are an unavoidable feature of all human endeavor and thus also of service delivery” (Boshoff, 1997, p.110). Regardless of the efforts and precautions to avoid breakdowns and errors in service delivery, failures are bound to occur. Although failures will always occur, firms can avoid the cost of losing customers through service recovery. Zemke and Bell (1990) defined service recovery as a “thought-out, planned process for returning aggrieved customers to a state of satisfaction with the firm after a service or product has failed to live up to expectations” (p. 43).
Paraguayan Bilingualism: A Case Study Of Phonological Adaptation, Curtis W. Snyder, Dr. Willis Fails
Paraguayan Bilingualism: A Case Study Of Phonological Adaptation, Curtis W. Snyder, Dr. Willis Fails
Journal of Undergraduate Research
With the Paraguayan constitution of 1992, Guaraní gained a particularly interesting status as it became recognized by the government as the “national” language of Paraguay with Spanish being the “official” language. Although not all people in Paraguay speak Guaraní, the overwhelming majority do. Figure one illustrates the percentages of people that belong to the different linguistic communities of Paraguay. If we add the Bilingual Spanish and the Monolingual Guaraní sections we see that 92% of Paraguayans can speak Guaraní, either as a native or second language. The percentage of the total population included in this group is astonishing and definitely …

Sites Of Memory: The Destruction Of Public Buildings During The Paris Commune Of 1871, Julie C. Nay, Dr. Daryle Lee
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In March 1871, in response to the brutal Prussian siege of the city, a humiliating peace treaty with the Germans, and an attempt by the national government to deprive Paris of her cannons, the Central Committee of the National Guard declared Paris independent of the national government and installed itself in the Hôtel de Ville. The Commune de Paris was born. For seventy-two days the Commune held sway over Paris, occupying important public buildings. During the final week of the Commune, called the “Bloody Week” of 21-28 May, many of these buildings were destroyed in the struggle between the Communards …

The Cultural Whys Of Mental Retardation: Etiologies Among The Asante In Ghana, West Africa, Chelsea Shields, Dr. William C. Olsen
Journal of Undergraduate Research
During my time as an international student at the University of Ghana and volunteering at a school for mentally handicapped children, I uncovered a large lacuna in non-western mental retardation research and decided to return the next year as BYU’s Ghana Medical Anthropology field study facilitator. I desired to document and disclose Asante beliefs behind mental retardation under the hope that such awareness would lead to more positive treatment of handicapped individuals.
Altruistic Vs. Reciprocal Family Relationships: A Levinasian Alternative, Bradford J. Wiggins, Dr. Edwin E. Gantt
Altruistic Vs. Reciprocal Family Relationships: A Levinasian Alternative, Bradford J. Wiggins, Dr. Edwin E. Gantt
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Some of the greatest challenges we face today are in our own families. Husbands and wives struggle to find meaning in their relationships. Parents often end up battling with their children as they seek to bring their families together in unified goals and purposes. Many are not successful in their pursuit of meaningful family relationships. Divorce and abuse are all to common in today’s society. Even more pervasive are the strained relationships between family members. How is it that these relationships can fall so short of their seemingly immense potential? It appears reasonable that family members should be able to …
Discovering The Egg: An Investigation Into The Art Of Solo Performance In Dance, Marney Schaumann, Pat Debenham
Discovering The Egg: An Investigation Into The Art Of Solo Performance In Dance, Marney Schaumann, Pat Debenham
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The elements of choreography and performance are vital to the craft of a dancer. All dancers in a University setting invest a majority of their time studying both disciplines. Choreography is an outlet of expression, a journey, a process, that dancers use to explore the world around them, and the people, places, emotions, and ideas in it. Performance is the culmination and fruition of the time, energy, and effort put into choreography. It is the presentation of a refined idea in motion.
Language Policy And Language Planning In Post-Colonial Mozambique, James Dewey, Dr. Willis C. Fails
Language Policy And Language Planning In Post-Colonial Mozambique, James Dewey, Dr. Willis C. Fails
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Mozambique, located on the southeast African coast, gained its independence from Portugal in 1975. Since that time, the Mozambican government has faced numerous problems such as a sixteen-year civil war, famines, flooding, and extreme poverty. In addition, the government faces unique linguistic challenges including how to unite and educate a nation that speaks at least twenty different African languages (Firmino 336). Through my research I wanted to gain a more complete understanding of Mozambique’s socio-linguistic history since its independence, with a special focus on the country’s official laws regarding language.
Structure And Dimensions Of Maternal Perceptions Of Japanese And American Child Temperament, Kenichi Shimokawa, Dr. David Shwalb
Structure And Dimensions Of Maternal Perceptions Of Japanese And American Child Temperament, Kenichi Shimokawa, Dr. David Shwalb
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The study of temperament has an important part in furthering our understanding about human development. Although the word “temperament” is defined in various ways by researchers, two leading theorists defined it as “constitutionally based individual differences in emotional, motor, and attentional reactivity and self-regulation” (Rothbart & Bates, 1997, p. 108). This definition, particularly, the term “constitutional” emphasizes the biological aspect of temperament. However, Dr. Shwalb and other researchers found evidences that suggest the influence of culture on how people perceive others temperament. Specifically, we studied the differences between maternal perceptions of Japanese and American child temperament to better understand how …

Pro-America Or Pro-Mexico: The Role Of The Spanish-American Press In The Southwest, Kelly K. Wight, Dr. Alf Pratte
Journal of Undergraduate Research
During the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), violent movements against the United States of America sprang up throughout all of southern Mexico. A huge surge of Mexican patriotism united most of the Mexican citizens against the United States and its influence on their culture. This sense of Mexican patriotism did not exist in the northern parts of Mexico, however. In the areas of California to Texas that were once a part of Mexico, virtually no uprisings or movements occurred resisting the assimilation of these areas into the United States of America. The Mexicans in these areas typically accepted the United States as …
