The Language Flagship Model And The Humanities, Sam Eisen Jan 2014

The Language Flagship Model And The Humanities, Sam Eisen

Russian Language Journal

The Language Flagship program provides a model that strengthens and deepens cultural engagement within the humanities and creates bridges to collaboration across disciplines. Flagship addresses needs for national security and global competitiveness and integrates professional and life experience into the humanities and other fields for the students who engage in this course of study. The cross-disciplinary nature of the Flagship program and the level of personal, cultural and professional engagement required to complete the program are successfully changing the undergraduate study experience in ways that address significant issues in the ongoing discussion of a crisis in the humanities. The Language …

Foreign Language Study Coupled With Internship Experience As An Entrée To Professional Opportunities, N. Anthony Brown

Russian Language Journal

Today’s global age presents its share of unique challenges, not the least of which is communication. Whereas in past centuries, fossil fuels played a central role in driving economies and influencing policy decisions, “language is the new oil” in the twenty-first century.1 Some forward thinking individuals and organizations have responded to the times and teamed up with universities and government agencies to develop new and innovative foreign language programs. Consider, for example, the U.S. federally funded National Flagship Language Program that offers upwards of nine months to one year of intensive language instruction in the target language culture and experiential …

Accuracy In Predicting Cross-Lingual Differential Item Functioning (Dif): A Study Of Russian To Kyrgyz Language Test Item Adaptation In The Kyrgyz Republic, Todd Drummond

Russian Language Journal

Russian-speaking teachers, assessment specialists, and other educators in Eurasia are frequently tasked with effectively translating and adapting sophisticated educational materials from Russian into non- Slavic languages. While standards, textbooks, and other teaching materials have been adapted from Russian to other Eurasian languages for over a century, a contemporary challenge is the adaptation of highly complex, standardized tests and assessments produced in the Russian language (Drummond and Gabrscek 2012). Because the results of educational assessments are often employed in high stakes decision making, the room for error in the adaptation of cross-lingual tests is small: Capturing exact meaning in all language …

Review: Russian Case Morphology And The Syntactic Categories, John Frederick Bailyn Jan 2014

Review: Russian Case Morphology And The Syntactic Categories, John Frederick Bailyn

Russian Language Journal

David Pesetsky’s Russian Case Morphology and the Syntactic Categories (MIT Press, 2013) is one of the most thought-provoking works of theoretical linguistics to appear in many years. It provides a startlingly original analysis of a well-known thorny problem of Russian morpho-syntax, embedding the analysis of that puzzle within a radical rethinking of the role of case in syntactic theory, and taking us on a journey of consequences and extensions that challenge one’s views of many aspects of minimalist theory, including key components of case theory, phrase structure, locality and others. If a monograph is to be judged by its creativity, …

Religion And The Politics Of Time: Holidays In France From Louis Xiv Through Napoleon: Book Review, Muriel Schmid Jan 2014

Religion And The Politics Of Time: Holidays In France From Louis Xiv Through Napoleon: Book Review, Muriel Schmid

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

As the full title indicates, Religion and the Politics of Time is organized chronologically and presents the evolution of the organization of time in France from the early seventeenth century to the early nineteenth century. The style of this historical inquiry is very much reminiscent of Michel Vovelle's or Bernard Plongeron's publications on eighteenth-century revolutionary France, both of which are similarly based on extensive archival research. One of the stated goals of the book is "to reexamine the republican calendar in a long-term framework'' (5). Looking at the history that immediately precedes and follows the creation of the republican calendar …

The Temple According To 1 Enoch, George W.E. Nickelsburg Jan 2014

The Temple According To 1 Enoch, George W.E. Nickelsburg

BYU Studies

During the Second Temple period (516 BCE to 70 CE), most Jews in Jerusalem worshipped at the Jerusalem temple. But a separate community at Qumran decried the lack of ritual purity in the activity at the Second Temple and saw their community as an ersatz for the temple. Literature at Qumran included 1 Enoch, a collection of five tractates composed in the Aramaic language between the fourth century BCE and the turn of the era and ascribed to the ancient patriarch Enoch, the head of the seventh generation after creation (Gen. 5:18–24). Some of the tractates are concerned about a …

The Pilgrim’S Intuitive Cognition In Pèlerinage De La Vie Humaine, David Strong Jan 2014

The Pilgrim’S Intuitive Cognition In Pèlerinage De La Vie Humaine, David Strong

Quidditas

This article maintains that the Pilgrim in Guillaume de Deguileville’s allegorical dream vision, Pèlerinage de la vie humaine, acquires a previously unrecognized importance through his cognitive abilities. Each personified figure’s significance depends not upon a general introduction, but the Pilgrim’s ability to identify those traits unique to their person. This mode of intellection mirrors the late Scholastic epistemology of intuitive cognition as championed by John Duns Scotus and William of Ockham. This theory allows the Pilgrim to grasp a particular object’s certitude without relying upon universals. Since this philosophy extols intellectual surety, it serves as a framework for interpreting the …

The End Of An Era: John E. Wills Jr’S 1688: A Global History As A Capstone, Nikolas O. Hoel Jan 2014

The End Of An Era: John E. Wills Jr’S 1688: A Global History As A Capstone, Nikolas O. Hoel

Quidditas

When designing a course, an appropriate question is how to end it. What great primary or secondary source will send students off into the larger academic world, outside the immediate class at hand with a better understanding of the period they had just been studying? The quandary is important in every medieval or early modern course; for example, does one end the medieval survey with Dante or Petrarch, or even Erasmus? The necessity for a capstone is no less great in classes that are entitled “England to 1688,” which populate many university course catalogues today. Many monographs and articles have …

A Plea For Narrative Theology: Living In And By Stories, Louis C. Midgley Jan 2014

A Plea For Narrative Theology: Living In And By Stories, Louis C. Midgley

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The following are reflections on some of the complicated history, including the abuses, of what is commonly known as theology. The Saints do not “do theology.” Even when we are tempted, we do not reduce the contents or grounds of faith to something conforming to traditional theology. Instead, we tell stories of how and why we came to faith, which are then linked to a network of other stories found in our scriptures, and to a master narrative. We live in and by stories and not by either dogmatic or philosophically grounded systematic theology. Instead, we tend to engage in …

Resolving Exeter Book Riddles 74 And 33: Stormy Allomorphs Of Water, Thomas Klein, William F. Klein, David Delehanty Jan 2014

Resolving Exeter Book Riddles 74 And 33: Stormy Allomorphs Of Water, Thomas Klein, William F. Klein, David Delehanty

Quidditas

The following article argues that the idea of the allomorph is a productive way to view two “transformation” riddles from the Old English collection of riddles in the Exeter Book. In the view of the authors, Riddles 74 and 33 should both be solved generally as “water,” and specifically as “in the form of a thunderstorm.” Both riddles dramatize the multiple forms that water may take, and meditate on the divinely-ordained grandeur of the storm and the particular paradox of a thing being both immensely violent and necessary for life on earth. Understanding how these riddles play out these truths …

Was Frederick Barbarossa The First Holy Roman Emperor?, Thomas Renna Jan 2014

Was Frederick Barbarossa The First Holy Roman Emperor?, Thomas Renna

Quidditas

Frederick Barbarossa (1152-90) was the first German emperor—later to be called the Holy Roman Emperor—who gave considerable attention to the three terms of the imperial title. His own registers and contemporary chronicles reveal frequent references to the three components of both his title and the Holy Roman Empire. I argue that Barbarossa was the first to attempt to integrate them into the German traditions of the empire, in particular the method of electing the king of the Romans, the historical ties with Charlemagne, and the concept of the empire as an amalgam of smaller principalities. He was the first to …

Hagar In Lds Scripture And Thought, Andrew C. Smith Jan 2014

Hagar In Lds Scripture And Thought, Andrew C. Smith

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

LDS discourse vis-à-vis Hagar has changed through the years since the foundation of the Church. Her story has been considered and utilized in a number of ways, the most prominent being as a defense of plural marriage. This paper traces the LDS usages of Hagar’s story as well as proposing a new allegorical interpretation of her place within the Abrahamic drama through literary connections in the Hebrew Bible combined with Restoration scripture.

Review: The Russian's World: Life And Language, Diane Nemec Ignashev Jan 2014

Review: The Russian's World: Life And Language, Diane Nemec Ignashev

Russian Language Journal

Now in its fourth edition (first published by Harcourt Brace Jovanovich in 1974), Gerhart’s and Boyle’s encyclopedic catalogue of “common knowledge” among “Russians” is a classic; readers of this review likely have at least one well-worn edition of The Russian’s World on their bookshelf. Where else under one cover can one find the rules for “gorodki” (240–1), a guide to (Soviet) Russian clothing sizes—“take the bust or chest measurement and divide it in two” (111), or the how-tos on visiting a Russian Orthodox church (270–80)? Abundantly illustrated with no-frills line drawings and black-and-white photographs (of uneven quality), with two color …

Mitt Romney And "I Mormoni": A 2012 Analysis Of Italy's Print Media, Mauro Properzi Jan 2014

Mitt Romney And "I Mormoni": A 2012 Analysis Of Italy's Print Media, Mauro Properzi

BYU Studies

The author, a native of Italy, considers how the 2012 "Mormon Moment" (prompted primarily by Mitt Romney's campaign for the U.S. presidency) was covered by the Italian print and online media. He analyzes 344 articles, dated between January 1 and October 31, 2012, that use the words "Mormon," "Mormons," or "The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints," examining their portrayal of Mormonism through the lens of three questions: How did Mitt Romney's Mormonism affect the media's portrayal of his candidacy? What historical, social, and theological images of the LDS Church emerged from these accounts? And how did reports on …

The Lds Story Of Enoch As The Culminating Episode Of A Temple Text, Jeffrey M. Bradshaw Jan 2014

The Lds Story Of Enoch As The Culminating Episode Of A Temple Text, Jeffrey M. Bradshaw

BYU Studies

The story of Enoch might be understood as the culminating episode in a temple text cycle woven through the Book of Moses in the LDS Pearl of Great Price. A "temple text" is a sacred text that uses ceremony and commandments to allow a person to stand ritually in the presence of God. The Book of Moses reflects elements of temple architecture, furnishings, and ritual in the story of the Creation and the Fall. Like other scripture-based temple texts, the general structure of the second half of the Book of Moses follows a pattern exemplifying faithfulness and unfaithfulness to a …

Madonella's Other Convent: "Platonick" Ladies, Randy Rakes, And The "Mahometan" Paradise, Samara Anne Cahill Jan 2014

Madonella's Other Convent: "Platonick" Ladies, Randy Rakes, And The "Mahometan" Paradise, Samara Anne Cahill

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

In eighteenth-century England both the Roman Catholic convent andthe Muslim harem were stereotyped as feminine spaces of religious alterity and sexual subversion. As a result, those who wished to defend women's learning often resorted to complex xenophobic representational strategies as a way of disassociating learned women from these spaces. I argue that the stereotypical "Platonick lady:' as a satirical figure that negotiated both these sites of supposed sexual hypocrisy and foreign dominion, ought to be considered a complex but key trope in the history of feminist orientalism. This is because, in her hypocritical obsession with the disembodied "soul;' the …

Excerpts From The World At War By Georg Brandes, Catherine D. Groth Jan 2014

Excerpts From The World At War By Georg Brandes, Catherine D. Groth

The Bridge

Dear Friend:

Your remark about the Danes, that they are a nation without pride, has made bad blood in this country and has wounded me personally. A writer of your rank should refrain from derogatory expressions about a whole nation, especially since such generalisations never hit the truth, no more than one strikes a butterfly with a club. You doubtless remember Renan's words on the subject.
