Remembering The Schleswig War Of 1864: A Turning Point In German And Danish National Identity, Julie K. Allen Jan 2014

Remembering The Schleswig War Of 1864: A Turning Point In German And Danish National Identity, Julie K. Allen

The Bridge

Every country tells itself stories about its origins and the moments that define its history. Many of these stories are connected to wars, for example the tale of how George Washington and his troops crossed the frozen Delaware river to surprise the British and turn the tide of the Revolutionary War, or the way the American public rallied after the attack on Pearl Harbor to retool the American economy and support American troops in the fight against fascism. Not surprisingly, the stories we tell about our own country are most often ones about wars from which we emerge victorious, rather …

Daily Life In Denmark In The 19th Century, Sofie Krogh Nielsen Jan 2014

Daily Life In Denmark In The 19th Century, Sofie Krogh Nielsen

The Bridge

The 19th century entailed a lot of change in Denmark. For instance, industrialization broke through and changed the landscape, society, and conditions of life; the 1849 Constitution abolished absolute monarchy so that the political scene was changed. The 19th century was also the century where nationalism started to blossom and the idea of one nation with one people and one language developed. Moreover, Denmark was reduced from a great power to a small state with the loss of Norway in 1814 and the duchies of Slesvig, Holstein, and Lauenburg in 1864. Finally, it was also a century of emigration, especially …

Is Geoffrey Chaucer’S Tale Of Sir Thopas A Rape Narrative? Reading Thopas In Light Of The 1382 Statute Of Rapes, Kristin Bovaird-Abbo Jan 2014

Is Geoffrey Chaucer’S Tale Of Sir Thopas A Rape Narrative? Reading Thopas In Light Of The 1382 Statute Of Rapes, Kristin Bovaird-Abbo

Quidditas

Considering the tale’s placement between two narratives of violence—the Prioress’s Tale and the Tale of Melibee—it is surprising that the Tale of Sir Thopas has not merited more discussion of the potential for violence against feminine bodies. I argue that Chaucer the author introduces significant changes to the typical medieval romance, with the result that Thopas’s actions in the name of “love” conceal a rape narrative that engages late fourteenth-century debates as to what exactly constituted rape. As the transfer of property was a significant portion of such discussions, the 1382 Statute of Rapes prompted concerns about the ability …

1d Resistivity Sounding Geophysical Survey By Using Schlumberger Electrode Configuration Method For Groundwater Explorations In Catchment Area Of Anjani And Jhiri River, Northern Maharashtra (India)

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

The present paper focuses on groundwater exploration using scientific methods. The area decide for the study, Anjani and Jhiri river basin, which comes under hard rock terrain from Maharashtra province, India. In this regards to conduct the hydrogeological and hydrogeophysical survey to understand the groundwater condition in the area. The aquifer geometry in the study area has been interpreted by carrying out 1D resistivity sounding using the conventional four electrode resistivity meter. The resistivity measurements obtained in sounding have been interpreted by curve matching technique to calculate the layer parameters (resistivity and thickness) and subsequently to reconstruct the depth sections …

Dissenters: Portraying The Church As Wrong So They Can Be Right Without It, Brian C. Hales Jan 2014

Dissenters: Portraying The Church As Wrong So They Can Be Right Without It, Brian C. Hales

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

This essay addresses the reasons many persons have left The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. In particular, there are those who publicly assert the Church is not led by inspired leaders so they can feel at peace about their decision to leave it. One common argument used to justify their estrangement is the “Samuel Principle,” which ostensibly would require God to allow his followers on earth to go astray if they chose any level of unrighteousness. Problems with this interpretation are presented including examples from religious history that show that God’s primary pattern has been to call his …

Eye Of The Beholder, Law Of The Harvest: Observations On The Inevitable Consequences Of The Different Investigative Approaches Of Jeremy Runnells And Jeff Lindsay, Kevin Christensen Jan 2014

Eye Of The Beholder, Law Of The Harvest: Observations On The Inevitable Consequences Of The Different Investigative Approaches Of Jeremy Runnells And Jeff Lindsay, Kevin Christensen

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

In his Letter to a CES Director, Jeremy Runnells explains how a year of obsessive investigation brought about the loss of his testimony. In an LDS FAQ, LDS blogger Jeff Lindsay deals with all of the same questions, and has done so at least twenty years and has not only an intact testimony, but boundless enthusiasm. What makes the difference? In the parable of the Sower, Jesus explained that the same seeds (words) can generate completely different harvests, ranging from nothing to a hundredfold increase, all depending on the different soil and nurture. This essay looks at how different expectations …

The Empty Link: Zen Meditative Harmonics And Intimations Of Enlightenment In Pope1s Essay On Man And Shakespeare's Merchant Of Venice, John G. Rudy Jan 2014

The Empty Link: Zen Meditative Harmonics And Intimations Of Enlightenment In Pope1s Essay On Man And Shakespeare's Merchant Of Venice, John G. Rudy

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

Commenting on its status as "unmistakably a poem of its period;' Frank Brady complains that Alexander Pope's An Essay on Man . has not fared as well among readers as have other representative epics, specifically The Prelude and Paradise Lost: "While we still retain enough of the Romantic attitude toward life to understand Wordsworth, and enough knowledge, at least, of Christianity to understand Milton, the philosophical basis of Pope's viewpoint has disappeared todaf' The problem, according to Brady, lies in the relationship between reason, the quality which lends the period one of its names, and philosophical optimism, the basis …

Milton In Context: Book Review, Angela Eward-Mangione Jan 2014

Milton In Context: Book Review, Angela Eward-Mangione

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

John Milton evades literary categorization more than any of his early modern contemporaries. William Shakespeare and Christopher Marlowe primarily elicited fame through their contributions to English drama and poetry. John Donne is recognized as a master of both the sonnet and the sermon, though his love poetry remains a significant object of study as well. Milton, however, who wrote primarily as a poet and a pamphleteer, also worked as a government employee, actively engaging his social and political circumstances perhaps more than any other literary writer in early modern England. Milton's activism later led T. S. Eliot, when repenting his …

Of Broomsticks, The "Moderns;' And Self-Expression, Nathalie Zimpfer Jan 2014

Of Broomsticks, The "Moderns;' And Self-Expression, Nathalie Zimpfer

Religion in the Age of Enlightenment

Broomsticks have a history of making their way into Jonathan Swift's works. One might recall that such is the object of Peter's theologico-interpretive rantings in A Tale of a Tub, in which "after some pause the Brother so often mentioned for his Erudition, who was very skill'd in Criticisms, had found in a certain Author, which he said should be nameless, that the same Word which in the Will is called Fringe, does also signify Broom-stick." More conspicuously, said object is also at the heart of A Meditation upon a Broomstick, an amusing opuscule whose full title, A …

First Principles And Ordinances: The Fourth Article Of Faith In Light Of The Temple, Samuel M. Brown Jan 2014

First Principles And Ordinances: The Fourth Article Of Faith In Light Of The Temple, Samuel M. Brown

Maxwell Institute Publications

Familiarity can lead to a kind of blindness in life and in religion. The first principles and ordinances of the gospel are particularly at risk for neglectful misunderstanding. Author Samuel M. Brown offers a fresh approach by asking how our relationship with God and others can transform our understanding of the gospel basics of faith, repentance, baptism, and the gift of the Holy Ghost. By weaving a tapestry of personal stories, scripture, and history, Brown shows how the truths taught in the highest Temple ordinances relate to the first principles of the gospel. Get to know the Fourth Article of …

Restoration: A Theological Poem In The Book Of Mormon, Val Larsen Jan 2014

Restoration: A Theological Poem In The Book Of Mormon, Val Larsen

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The distinctive Mormon conception of God makes possible a logically coherent reconciliation of the facially incompatible laws of justice and mercy. The Book of Mormon prophet Alma clearly explains how these two great laws may be reconciled through the atonement and repentance that the atonement makes possible. Alma artfully illustrates the relationship between justice and mercy in a carefully crafted theological poem.

Founded Upon A Rock: Doctrinal And Temple Implications Of Peter’S Surnaming, Matthew L. Bowen Jan 2014

Founded Upon A Rock: Doctrinal And Temple Implications Of Peter’S Surnaming, Matthew L. Bowen

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

The famous Petros/petra wordplay in Matthew 16:18 does not constitute Jesus’s identification of Peter as the “rock” upon which his church would be built. This wordplay does however identify him with that “rock” or “bedrock” inasmuch as Peter, a small “seer-stone,” had the potential to become like the Savior himself, “the Rock of ages.” One aspect of that “rock” is the revelation that comes through faith that Jesus is the Christ. Other aspects of that same rock are the other principles and ordinances of the gospel, including temple ordinances. The temple, a symbol of the Savior and his body, is …

The Time Of Sin, Joseph M. Spencer Jan 2014

The Time Of Sin, Joseph M. Spencer

Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship

This essay provides a close theological reading of Helaman 13, the first part of the sermon of Samuel the Lamanite. Beginning from the insight that the chapter focuses intensely on time, it develops a theological case for how sin has its own temporality. Sin opens up a disastrous future, deliberately misremembers the past, and complicates the constitution of the present as the past of the future.

Teaching Correct Principles: The Experience Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints Responding To Widespread Social Acceptance Of Elective Abortion, Lynn D. Wardle Jan 2014

Teaching Correct Principles: The Experience Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints Responding To Widespread Social Acceptance Of Elective Abortion, Lynn D. Wardle

BYU Studies

LDS official policies and the teachings of General Authorities, beginning with Joseph Smith, have consistently decried elective abortion. Since the 1970s, social values in the United States have increasingly moved toward acceptance of elective abortion. Church leaders have consistently explained the underlying theological reasons for their policy that abortion should be illegal in most but not all cases and kept their focus on the specific practice (elective abortion) that was of major concern and avoided getting diverted by peripheral issues. This consistent message has successfully passed this value to younger generations of Church members.

Causality In La Mort Le Roi Artu: Free Will, Accident, And Moral Failure, David S. King Jan 2014

Causality In La Mort Le Roi Artu: Free Will, Accident, And Moral Failure, David S. King

Quidditas

The thirteenth-century French La Mort le Roi Artu indicates forthrightly how the Arthurian world comes to an end, but the text leaves less clear what motivates the disaster. Many critics attribute the cause to an external force, God or the goddess Fortune, that obliges Arthur and others to pursue their own destruction. A few offer greater insight into the nature of causality in the romance. They see the characters as exercising some degree of free will or even complete liberty. But these critics err in alienating the notion of free choice from moral concerns. In their reading, the heroes suffer …

The Intersection Of Music Philosophy, Performance And Genre In The Middle English Breton Lay Sir Orfeo, Lisa Myers Jan 2014

The Intersection Of Music Philosophy, Performance And Genre In The Middle English Breton Lay Sir Orfeo, Lisa Myers

Quidditas

The Middle English romance Sir Orfeo is a dynamic and creative retelling of the classical Orpheus myth in which the wife of the English king, Orfeo, is abducted by fairies but eventually restored to her position and husband through Orfeo’s musical prowess. While any retelling of the Orpheus myth would necessarily contain references to music and would, therefore, likely use music as an important cue within the text, the poet of Sir Orfeo displays a sophisticated understanding of musical philosophy, composition and performance, as well as the Breton lay genre. The intersection of these elements all work together not only …
