Influence Of Water Size And Type On Bat Captures In The Lower Sonoran Desert, Michael J. Rabe, Steven S. Rosenstock

Western North American Naturalist

We compared bat use by mist-netting at 4 different types of wildlife water developments in southwestern Arizona during summer 2000 and 2001. Scaling our results by netting effort, we caught bats more frequently and observed higher species diversity at tinajas (modified natural rock pools) with larger open-water area compared with "guzzler" type water developments that had less open water and more obstacles to bat flight. We caught the fewest bats at guzzlers with buried concrete vault drinkers, which impede bat access and have the smallest areas of open water. Water development designs that minimize evaporative water loss by reducing the …

A Life History Study Of The Snake River Plains Endemic Lepidium Papilliferum (Brassicaceae), Susan E. Meyer, Dana Quinney, Jay Weaver Jan 2005

A Life History Study Of The Snake River Plains Endemic Lepidium Papilliferum (Brassicaceae), Susan E. Meyer, Dana Quinney, Jay Weaver

Western North American Naturalist

Lepidium papilliferum is an ephemeral species that occupies "slick spot" microhabitats in the matrix of sagebrush steppe vegetation of the southwestern Snake River plains, Idaho, USA. We related population demographic data collected from 1993 to 1996 to on-site precipitation data on the Orchard Training Area west of Boise. We also carried out field seed-retrieval and in situ seed bank studies. We found that L. papilliferum has a dual life history strategy. A fraction of each cohort sets seed as summer annuals, while the remaining plants remain vegetative and potentially biennial. Surviving biennials flower and set seed along with the annual …

Attack And Brood Production By The Douglas-Fir Beetle (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) In Douglas-Fir, Pseudotsuga Menziesii Var. Glauca (Pinaceae), Following A Wildfire, Catherine A. Cunningham, Michael J. Jenkins, David W. Roberts Jan 2005

Attack And Brood Production By The Douglas-Fir Beetle (Coleoptera: Scolytidae) In Douglas-Fir, Pseudotsuga Menziesii Var. Glauca (Pinaceae), Following A Wildfire, Catherine A. Cunningham, Michael J. Jenkins, David W. Roberts

Western North American Naturalist

In 1994 ground fire ignited in forests of Douglas-fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii var. glauca (Mirb.) Franco, on Beaver Mountain, Utah. The Douglas-fir beetle, Dendroctonus pseudotsugae Hopkins, attacked a range of moderately fire-injured host conifers in 1995. Logistic regression models run for 1995 data illustrated that 1 year after the fire event the Douglas-fir beetle selected and attacked large-diameter Douglas-fir with 60%–80% bole char, 60%–80% crown volume scorch, and 50%–70% probability of mortality due to fire. In 1996 beetle preference shifted to smaller-diameter trees with lighter fire injury, because most large, fire-damaged conifers were colonized by beetles in 1995. Although beetle populations …

Winter Site Fidelity And Body Condition Of Three Riparian Songbird Species Following A Fire, Ivan A. Samuels, Thomas Gardali, Diana L. Humple, Geoffrey R. Geupel Jan 2005

Winter Site Fidelity And Body Condition Of Three Riparian Songbird Species Following A Fire, Ivan A. Samuels, Thomas Gardali, Diana L. Humple, Geoffrey R. Geupel

Western North American Naturalist

The effects of fire on nonbreeding songbird species in riparian habitat have not been studied. We compared body condition, within-year site fidelity, and between-year site fidelity of 3 songbird species (Passerella iliaca, Fox Sparrow; Catharus guttatus, Hermit Thrush; and Regulus calendula, Ruby-crowned Kinglet) at 2 coastal riparian sites. Wildfire, which is rare in this habitat, had occurred at 1 of the sites before data collection. A significantly larger proportion of Passerella iliaca was recaptured in subsequent winters at the unburned site than at the burned site, but little difference was found between sites for Catharus guttatus …

Response Of Sagebrush Steppe Species To Elevated Co2 And Soil Temperature, Melissa S. Lucash, Blake Farnsworth, William E. Winner Jan 2005

Response Of Sagebrush Steppe Species To Elevated Co2 And Soil Temperature, Melissa S. Lucash, Blake Farnsworth, William E. Winner

Western North American Naturalist

Elevated atmospheric CO2 may cause long-term changes in the productivity and species composition of the sagebrush steppe. Few studies, however, have evaluated the effects of increased CO2 on growth and physiology of species important to this ecosystem. Since the response of plants to elevated CO2 may be limited by environmental factors, soil temperature was also examined to determine if low soil temperatures limit CO2 response. To determine how CO2 and soil temperature affect the growth of species native to the sagebrush steppe, bottlebrush squirreltail [Elymus elymoides (Raf.) Swezey], Thurber needlegrass (Stipa thurberiana Piper), …

Simulation models were equipped with a Visual Basic interface to aid trainees to manipulate the model via ActiveX. Constructed computer simulation was compared with live simulation to answer these research questions: 1. Was computer simulation able to teach additional lean concepts not covered …

Evaluation Of Land Development Impact On A Tropical Watershed Hydrology Using Remote Sensing And Gis Jan 2005

Evaluation Of Land Development Impact On A Tropical Watershed Hydrology Using Remote Sensing And Gis

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Understanding how the land use change influence the river basin hydrology will enable planners to formulate policies to minimize the undesirable effects of future land use changes. Land cover changes increase impervious ground surfaces, decrease infiltration rate and increase runoff rate, hence causing low base flow during the dry seasons. Efficient tools such as satellite remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) are currently being used to manage the limited water resources. The need for spatial and temporal land-cover change detection at a larger scale makes satellite imagery the most cost effective, efficient and reliable source of data. The ability …

Spatial Analysis Of Urban Stormwater Quality Jan 2005

Spatial Analysis Of Urban Stormwater Quality

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

Urban stormwater non-point source pollutants are recognized as a major cause of receiving waters quality deterioration. To date most research has focused on specifying temporal variations of stormwater quality parameters which includes high uncertainties and also increases the risk of pollution control structures failure. Traditionally, the temporal variations of quality parameters in forms of either pollutograph or Event Mean Concentration (EMC) is obtained by sampling stormwater at the outlet of urban catchments for quality analysis in addition to measurement of flow rate over years. Spatial variations of the runoff quality are the key factor in non-point source pollution studies. This …

Model The Effect Of Four Artificial Recharge Dams On The Quality Of Groundwater Using Geostatistical Methods In Gis Environment, Oman Jan 2005

Model The Effect Of Four Artificial Recharge Dams On The Quality Of Groundwater Using Geostatistical Methods In Gis Environment, Oman

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

The geostatistical techniques of GPI, IDW and Kriging were applied in order to evaluate the use of these statistical approaches in GIS environment to examine artificial recharge dams and its effect on the quality of groundwater. Quantitative models were employed to investigate one aspect of the artificial dam’s role on improving the shallow groundwater quality.

The TDS was taken as the chemical parameter to validate the applicability of the geostatistical models in the four dams. The decrease of salinity of groundwater along the subsurface flow path away from the dams toward the coast, in all the prepared interpolated maps is …

Spatial Distribution Of Land Type In Regression Models Of Pollutant Loading Jan 2005

Spatial Distribution Of Land Type In Regression Models Of Pollutant Loading

Journal of Spatial Hydrology

This paper proposes a method to improve landscape-pollution interaction regression models through the inclusion of a variable that describes the spatial distribution of a land type with respect to the pattern of runoff within a drainage catchment. The proposed index is used as an independent variable to enhance the strength, as quantified by R2 values, of regression relationships between empirical observations of in-stream pollutant concentrations and land type by considering the spatial distribution of key land-type categories within the sample point’s drainage area. We present an index that adds a new dimension of explanatory power when used in conjunction …

Early Mormon And Shaker Visions Of Sanctified Community, J. Spencer Fluhman Jan 2005

Early Mormon And Shaker Visions Of Sanctified Community, J. Spencer Fluhman

BYU Studies

Polly Knight's health was failing as she and her family trudged toward western Missouri. Having accepted Joseph Smith Jr. as God's prophet on earth, the Knights left heir Colesville, New York, farm and joined with other Mormon converts at Kirtland, Ohio, in 1831. Finding a brief respite there, they again set out, this time for the city of "Zion" that Joseph Smith said they would help build in Jackson County, Missouri. Worried that Polly was too ill to complete the trek, her family considered stopping in hopes she might recover. But "she would not consent to stop traveling," recalled her …

The Online Language Learning Environment: New Roles For The Humanist, James S. Noblitt

Russian Language Journal

Thomas Edison played an important role in improving the technologies needed for the telephone. He was said to have been excited about the educational potential of the new instrument and speculated that it would soon be found in every classroom.

Well, he was right about the educational potential of information and communication technology, but he was wrong about the form the new technology would take.

This chapter raises questions concerning the role humanists will play in determining the development and implementation of information and communication technologies for educational purposes.

Development Of A Process Of Addition Of Tricalcium Phosphate From Burnt Phosphate Rock In Feed For Animal Nutrition, Luis Fernando Nogales Grágeda Jan 2005

Development Of A Process Of Addition Of Tricalcium Phosphate From Burnt Phosphate Rock In Feed For Animal Nutrition, Luis Fernando Nogales Grágeda

Theses and Dissertations

This study took place in Bolivia with the purpose of using thermally treated Capinota phosphate rock as a phosphorous supplement in balanced feed diets. The objective was to produce a natural phosphate substance that would be more easily accessible to the local population than commercial feed supplements. An additional objective of this study was to increase the availability of the low-fluoride phosphorous. The biological assays indicated that the diet with the added burned phosphoric rock produced similar yields to those using a commercial feed supplement (dicalcium phosphate). This indicates that the locally manufactured product, by partial acidification, can compete with …
