Recreational Trails As Corridors For Alien Plants In The Rocky Mountains, Usa, Floye H. Wells, William K. Lauenroth, John B. Bradford
Recreational Trails As Corridors For Alien Plants In The Rocky Mountains, Usa, Floye H. Wells, William K. Lauenroth, John B. Bradford
Western North American Naturalist
Alien plant species often use areas of heavy human activity for habitat and dispersal. Roads and utility corridors have been shown to harbor more alien species than the surrounding vegetation and are therefore believed to contribute to alien plant persistence and spread. Recreational trails represent another corridor that could harbor alien species and aid their spread. Effective management of invasive species requires understanding how alien plants are distributed at trailheads and trails and how their dispersal may be influenced by native vegetation. Our overall goal was to investigate the distribution of alien plants at trailheads and trails in the Rocky …

Jeffrey Pine Seed Dispersal In The Sierra San Pedro Mártir, Baja California, Mexico, Stephen B. Vander Wall, Mark S. Enders, Sarah Barga, Christopher Moore, Amy Seaman, Ramón Perea
Western North American Naturalist
The Sierra San Pedro Mártir (SSPM) in northern Baja California, Mexico, is a remote mountain at the southern edge of the California Floristic Province, a vegetation type that includes the Sierra Nevada of California and western Nevada. Unlike most forests in the southwestern United States, the forests of the SSPM have never been logged and have experienced only light grazing in recent years, and wildfires have not been suppressed until recent decades. The SSPM represents one of the best examples of an intact presettlement forest in the California Floristic Province. We investigated the mode of seed dispersal of Jeffrey pine …
Seed Source Affects Establishment Of Elymus Multisetus In Postfire Revegetation In The Great Basin, Courtney L. J. Rowe, Elizabeth A. Leger
Seed Source Affects Establishment Of Elymus Multisetus In Postfire Revegetation In The Great Basin, Courtney L. J. Rowe, Elizabeth A. Leger
Western North American Naturalist
Postfire revegetation with native perennial grasses is difficult to achieve in disturbed arid rangelands. If local populations are adapted to current conditions, then locally collected seed would be predicted to have higher survival than nonlocal seed, and using local seed should improve revegetation success. However, for revegetation projects in the Great Basin, sufficient quantity of local seed is often difficult to obtain commercially, so seeds often originate from source populations that are hundreds of kilometers from the project site. We investigated whether seed source affected first-year establishment of big squirreltail (Elymus multisetus M.E. Jones) seedlings in a common garden …
Current Status Of The Plains Pocket Mouse (Perognathus Flavescens) In Eastern Nebraska, Keith Geluso, Greg D. Wright
Current Status Of The Plains Pocket Mouse (Perognathus Flavescens) In Eastern Nebraska, Keith Geluso, Greg D. Wright
Western North American Naturalist
Distribution of the plains pocket mouse (Perognathus flavescens) overlaps tallgrass prairies in northeastern parts of the species’ range in the central United States. Distribution and abundance of the plains pocket mouse appears negatively impacted by agricultural practices during the last century due to the scarcity of records throughout the region. In eastern Nebraska, few plains pocket mice have been captured and no published account exists in recent decades. We investigated the current status of P. f. perniger, the eastern subspecies in Nebraska, because of a paucity of information regarding this subspecies’ natural history and suspected extirpation from the …

Observations On The Nesting Ecology And Early Life History Of The Dunes Sagebrush Lizard (Sceloporus Arenicolus), Wade A. Ryberg, Michael T. Hill, Daniel Lay, Lee A. Fitzgerald
Western North American Naturalist
Population studies of the dunes sagebrush lizard (Sceloporus arenicolus) suggest that fluctuations in the population dynamics of this lizard are driven by spatial and temporal variation in annual recruitment. Although variation in survival of eggs or embryos is known to contribute greatly to variation in annual recruitment in many other lizard species, little is known about these early life history stages and their contributions to the population dynamics of S. arenicolus. Here we describe the first 3 observations of nesting in the wild for S. arenicolus. All observations took place between 2005 and 2011 at Caprock Wildlife Area, …

Diet And Ectoparasites Of The Southern Short-Tailed Shrew (Blarina Carolinensis) In Louisiana, Terry L. Sylvester, Justin D. Hoffman, Eddie K. Lyons
Western North American Naturalist
Diet items and ectoparasites were identified from 15 southern short-tailed shrews (Blarina carolinensis) captured during a one-year study (December 2009–November 2010). Twenty different diet items were found in 13 southern short-tailed shrews. Collectively, insects made up the bulk of these shrews’ diet (92%), with Diptera and Hymenoptera being most prevalent. Plant material and arachnids occurred 46% of the time. Six of the diet items identified are new reports for the southern short-tailed shrew. Nine ectoparasite species were collected from 11 of the southern short-tailed shrews, comprising 8 species of mites and one species of tick. Orycteroxenus soricisand …
The Significance Of Sex-Linked Chromosomal Inversions In The Speciation Process Of The Simulium Arcticum Complex Of Black Flies (Diptera: Simuliidae), Gerald F. Shields
The Significance Of Sex-Linked Chromosomal Inversions In The Speciation Process Of The Simulium Arcticum Complex Of Black Flies (Diptera: Simuliidae), Gerald F. Shields
Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist
This study summarizes cytogenetic variation, particularly sex-linked chromosomal inversions which define taxa of the Simulium arcticum complex (Diptera: Simuliidae) in western Montana and portions of northern Idaho, Washington, and Oregon. Variation in polytene chromosomes was determined for nearly 15,000 larvae from 234 collections taken from 58 freshwater sites. The previously described siblings, S. apricarium, S. arcticum sensu stricto, S. brevicercum, and S. saxosum, were most numerous, while all cytotypes, with the exception of IIL-19, were found in low frequency. Additionaly, 6 new cytotypes in low frequency are described. Evidence suggests that the Y chromosome carries the testis-determining gene, and in …
Leaving The Alps For The Plains: A Brief Narrative Of A Swiss Family's Migration To Texas, Barbara Ozun
Leaving The Alps For The Plains: A Brief Narrative Of A Swiss Family's Migration To Texas, Barbara Ozun
Swiss American Historical Society Review
Cows, cheese, Swiss Army knives, mountains, and beautiful lakes are what people think of when they think Switzerland. Others talk about the military and the fact that every man is allowed-not encouraged-to own a gun and regularly shoot it at targets ... Still others marvel that a country so small could function so well with four official languages. Currently, cocktail party talk seems to center around the prescience of Switzerland's decision not to be part of the Eurozane-that is, if the person I am talking with can distinguish .Switzerland from Sweden! I am often asked about Switzerland and how my …
Bats Of The Wildcat Hills And Surrounding Areas In Western Nebraska, Keith Geluso, Jeffrey J. Huebschman, Kenneth N. Geluso
Bats Of The Wildcat Hills And Surrounding Areas In Western Nebraska, Keith Geluso, Jeffrey J. Huebschman, Kenneth N. Geluso
Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist
During the last few decades, detailed studies of bats have been conducted in many parts of Nebraska, but comprehensive surveys were lacking in the Wildcat Hills and other western regions of the state. The Wildcat Hills represent a unique and isolated area of rugged buttes, ridges, and canyons dominated by ponderosa pine forests (Pinus ponderosa) in central parts of Nebraska’s panhandle. This area also contains landscapes with some of the highest wind speeds in the state, making it conducive for future wind-energy development. To better understand the natural history of bats and to promote conservation efforts in the …
Metallization Of Dna And Dna Origami Using A Pd Seeding Method, Yanli Geng
Metallization Of Dna And Dna Origami Using A Pd Seeding Method, Yanli Geng
Theses and Dissertations
In this dissertation, I developed a Pd seeding method in association with electroless plating, to successfully metallize both lambda DNA and DNA origami templates on different surfaces. On mica surfaces, this method offered a fast, simple process, and the ability to obtain a relatively high yield of metallized DNA nanostructures. When using lambda DNA as the templates, I studied the effect of Pd(II) activation time on the seed height and density, and an optimal activation time between 10 and 30 min was obtained. Based on the Pd seeds formed on DNA, as well as a Pd electroless plating solution, continuous …

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy
Three cohorts of entering freshman women were assessed over the course of four years at Brigham Young University (BYU). The Eating Attitudes Test (EAT-26) and the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ) were administered at the beginning of each fall and winter semester. Results showed (a) steadily decreasing average levels of eating disorder risk and body shape dissatisfaction over time, which was mirrored in each cohort; (b) significantly lower eating disorder risk than other college samples; (c) a typically high percentage of women with clinically significant body shape dissatisfaction; (d) significant correlation between the EAT-26 and the BSQ; and (e) notable subgroups …

Baptized In Acid Or Breathed With Life? An Exploration Of Psychology's Bridging Capacity, Michael J. Richardson
Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy
Three influences are described as contributing to a changing understanding of “secular” that ultimately excluded a consideration of theistic considerations: First, the separation of religious and scientific domains following Cartesian dualism opened the door for the popularization of a naturalistic science with a central characteristic of being independent of theistic considerations. Dualism eventually emphasized a distinction between subjective and objective experiences, rather than a distinction between spiritual and material realities—allowing the possibility of a purely naturalistic dualism. Second, naturalistic science made inroads back into traditionally religious questions involving the “objective” realm, particularly through the work of Charles Darwin. Third, drawing …

Mormons who know about her are usually fans of Margaret Barker. Disclosure: I am one of them (Mormon who knows about her, and fan). For further disclosure, she paid attention and respect to the writings of Hugh Nibley, to whom I was and am filially devoted. So it isn’t as if I am unbiased in appreciating Barker’s work. I am also not alone; there are quite a few of us who read and love her. Indeed it may be said we love her because she first loved us—or at least unwittingly agreed with us. With her 2012 book, The Mother …

Father involvement in families of urban American Indians has been a neglected area of research. In this study, the authors examined the associations among parental relationship quality, father involvement, and coresidence. The authors conducted a multiple group analysis through structural equation modeling comparing 107 American Indian fathers with fathers of the general population in the Fragile Families and Child Wellbeing Study. Although the results were similar between groups, findings indicated two key differences for urban American Indians. First, emotional supportiveness had a stronger relationship with physically active engagement for American Indian fathers. Second, parental relationship quality had greater total standardized …

The explosive growth in access to the Internet has led to a commensurate increase in the availability, anonymity, and affordability of pornography. An emerging body of research has shown associations between pornography and certain behaviors and attitudes; yet, how pornography actually influences these outcomes has not been documented. In two studies (Study 1N=969; Study 2N=992) we examined the hypothesis that pornography influences potentially risky sexual behavior (hooking up) among emerging adults via sexual scripts. Our results demonstrate that more frequent viewing of pornography is associated with a higher incidence of hooking up and a higher number of unique hook up …

Cell Speed Is Independent Of Force In A Mathematical Model Of Amoeboidal Cell Motion With Random Switching Terms., J. C. Dallon, Emily J. Evans, Christopher Grant, William V. Smith

In this paper the motion of a single cell is modeled as a nucleus and multiple integrin based adhesion sites. Numerical simulations and analysis of the model indicate that when the stochastic nature of the adhesion sites is a memoryless and force independent random process, the cell speed is independent of the force these adhesion sites exert on the cell. Furthermore, understanding the dynamics of the attachment and detachment of the adhesion sites is key to predicting cell speed. We introduce a differential equation describing the cell motion and then introduce a conjecture about the expected drift of the cell, …

Determining a user’s affective state can be an important element when trying to understand human-computer interactions. Accurately assessing affect during system use, however, can be very difficult, especially in a non-laboratory setting. Extensive previous research in neuroscience has shown that arousal and valence influence motor control. In this research, the prior relevant neuroscience findings inform the investigation of mouse movement behavior under conditions of low and high arousal as well as positive and negative valence. A controlled laboratory experiment was conducted, providing support for hypotheses predicting that arousal and valence may be inferred by monitoring for differences in the distance, …

Computer-mediated deception is prevalent and may have serious consequences for individuals, organizations, and society. This article investigates several metrics as predictors of deception in synchronous chatbased environments, where participants must often spontaneously formulate deceptive responses. Based on cognitive load theory, we hypothesize that deception influences response time, word count, lexical diversity, and the number of times a chat message is edited. Using a custom chatbot to conduct interviews in an experiment, we collected 1,572 deceitful and 1,590 truthful chat-based responses. The results of the experiment confirm that deception is positively correlated with response time and the number of edits and …

The Impact Of Parental Involvement On A Structured Youth Program Experience: A Qualitative Inquiry, Mat D. Duerden, Peter A. Witt, Christopher J. Harrist
Faculty Publications
Parental involvement is an often proposed, but rarely researched, key element of youth programs. Questions remain regarding the impact of parental involvement on program processes and outcomes. Qualitative data were collected over a one-year period with youth participants (n=46), parents (n=26), and teachers (n=5) associated with an international immersion/service learning program for adolescents. Three main research questions guided the data analysis: (1) what role does parental involvement play in the youths’ experience in the program; (2) how does parental involvement in the program influence the parent/child relationship; and (3) what role does parental involvement play in terms of the program’s …
