Journal of Undergraduate Research
Thank you for this MEG award. It led to important research performed primarily by undergraduate students in my laboratory. Our work resulted in some molecular pathways leading to OA that can be exploited by pharmacologic intervention. We exceeded our stated goals for the project. Work from this MEG has already resulted in 2 publications (see below; undergraduate students are in yellow). In addition, we have another paper in review at this time and three others that will be submitted within the next 3-4 months. Besides those students listed as co-authors below, other students that participated in the project are Joshua …

This report will outline how effectively we met our academic and mentoring objectives.I have listed below both the academic and mentoring objectives put forth in the original proposal and have outlined how they were met or modified over the course of the past two years.
Academic Objective: To test two hypotheses about the causal mechanisms behind the flipped classroom.

Final Report For 2013 Meg: Improving The Memory Response Of Pathogen Specific Helper T Cells, Scott Weber
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The following two aims are from my 2013 MEG. We made great progress and completed most of both Aim 1 and Aim 2. Details on the progress for each aim are described below.
Mentoring Environment: This MEG allowed me to expand the size of my lab and increase the amount and quality of mentoring. I met with student each week in lab meeting as well as individually. I also had each student email me a weekly update. Students were given opportunities to do hands on work, be involved in the data analysis and presentation at local and regional meetings.

2013-2014 Final Report : Ephedra (Each Person Has Essential Disciplinary Research Abilities) In Interdisciplinary Climate Change Studies, Richard Gill
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The central aim of this proposal was to provide opportunities for students from diverse academic backgrounds to work collaboratively on a number of federally funded projects that include Colorado Plateau grasslands, the Mojave Desert, the Great Basin sagebrush steppe, and the Uintah Mountains. This proposal funded a portion of the salary for 9 students from life sciences, and engineering. The mentoring environment and plan focused on allowing students with diverse interests and training to work together on complex problems with frequent interaction with faculty and graduate students. We have a novel undergraduate lab that integrates training in science across the …

The Neuroprotective Effect Of Exercise On Memory Impairment Induced By Stress, Jeff Edwards
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The objectives of this award were met, especially in regard to the mentoring focus of the award. The students have been mentored and trained in an effective manner as outlined in my Mentoring Plan (abbreviated below). This includes mentoring students in research, writing, publishing, presenting at conferences, etc. Indeed, one measure of the success of mentoring is demonstrated by the fact that all the students graduating from my lab during this time were accepted to the professional school of their choice (see students listed below). Research, especially where the students are actually involved in all aspects of it including data …

Development Of An Interprofessional Health Education (Ipe) Program, Barbara Heise
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Evaluation of Academic Objectives We proposed to develop documentary videos on each discipline to highlight their strengths and what that discipline can bring to a team.
We also proposed to add an IPE course that would include TeamSTEPPS and crucial conversations education, approach other disciplines and work with our community partners.
Does Habitat Restoration Increase Coexistence Of Native Stream Fishes With Introduced Brown Trout: A Case Study On The Middle Provo River, Utah, Usa, Mark C. Belk, Eric J. Billman, Craig Ellsworth, Brock R. Mcmillan
Does Habitat Restoration Increase Coexistence Of Native Stream Fishes With Introduced Brown Trout: A Case Study On The Middle Provo River, Utah, Usa, Mark C. Belk, Eric J. Billman, Craig Ellsworth, Brock R. Mcmillan
Faculty Publications
Restoration of altered or degraded habitats is often a key component in the conservation plan of native aquatic species, but introduced species may influence the response of the native community to restoration. Recent habitat restoration of the middle section of the Provo River in central Utah, USA, provided an opportunity to evaluate the effect of habitat restoration on the native fish community in a system with an introduced, dominant predator—brown trout (Salmo trutta). To determine the change in distribution of fish species and community composition, we surveyed 200 m of each of the four study reaches both before …

Minimizing Pain During Childhood Vaccination Injections: Improving Adherence To Vaccination Schedules, Lacey M. Eden, Janelle L.B. Macintosh, Karlen E. Luthy, Renea L. Beckstrand
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Pain experienced in childhood can lead to long-term and psychologically detrimental effects. Unfortunately, the most common pain experienced in childhood is caused by vaccinations and may lead to non-adherence to the recommended vaccination schedule. As a result, it is the health care provider’s responsibility to take measures to reduce vaccination pain; however, there are a plethora of pain relieving interventions during immunizations and it is unclear which interventions are most cost efficient, timely, and effective. Studies have been conducted to investigate the efficacy of different pain management interventions during vaccinations. This review evaluates various pain relieving interventions and provide health …
Development Of The First High-Density Physical Maps Of Amaranthus – Genome Sequencing And Insights Into Speciation, Peter J. Maughan
Development Of The First High-Density Physical Maps Of Amaranthus – Genome Sequencing And Insights Into Speciation, Peter J. Maughan
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Amaranthus hypochondriacus is an emerging pseudo-cereal native to the New World which has garnered increased attention in recent years due to its nutritional quality, in particular its seed protein, and more specifically its high levels of the essential amino acid lysine. It belongs to the Amaranthaceae family, is an ancient paleopolyploid that shows disomic inheritance (2n=32), and has an estimated genome size of 466 Mb. Here we present a highquality draft genome sequence of the grain amaranth A. hypochondriacus. The genome assembly consisted of 377 Mb in 3,518 scaffolds with an N50 of 371 kb. Repetitive element analysis predicted …

Alcohol And Nicotine Co-Dependence Iii, Scott C. Steffensen, Jeffery G. Edwards, Sterling N. Sudweeks
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Alcoholism and nicotine (NIC) addiction are chronic relapsing disorders that have enormous impact on society. Alcohol and NIC are the most commonly abused drugs, and a large body of evidence indicates that there is a positive correlation between their consumption. Today, smoking NIC-containing tobacco products is recognized as one of the greatest risk factors in the development of alcoholism. A major goal of addiction research is to characterize the critical neural substrates that are most sensitive to these drugs, adapt in association with chronic consumption and drive subsequent drug-seeking behavior. The long-term objective of our research program is to advance …

Reconstructing Prehistoric Diets Of Desert People Through Dental Calculus, Michael T. Searcy
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In 2014 I was awarded a Mentoring Environment Grant by ORCA to examine microfossils embedded in the dental calculus (tartar) of individuals who were found during excavations in and around the site of Paquimé, which dates to the thirteenth century A.D. This ancient city is located in the Chihuahuan desert in modern-day Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, Mexico. Over the last two years, I have been able to involve students in the extraction, processing, publishing, and presentation of the results of this analysis. While the research is ongoing, preliminary results have positively identified several fascinating foods that were consumed by the ancient …

The signaling events that drive familial breast cancer (FBC) risk remain poorly understood. While the majority of genomic studies have focused on genetic risk variants, known risk variants account for at most 30% of FBC cases. Considering that multiple genes may influence FBC risk, we hypothesized that a pathway‐based strategy examining different data types from multiple tissues could elucidate the biological basis for FBC. In this study, we performed integrated analyses of gene expression and exome‐sequencing data from peripheral blood mononuclear cells and showed that cell adhesion pathways are significantly and consistently dysregulated in women who develop FBC. The dysregulation …
