Freezing-point diagrams were detennined tor a number or p-dioxane systems. The system, p-dioxane:carbon tetrachloride, was found to contain a 1:2 complex with a congruent melting point of 255.71 °K. This confirmed work reported in the literature. Solid solutions in the region between 0.0000 and 0.4796 mole fraction of p-dioxane were found in the present study. The system, p-dioxane:chloroform, was found to contain a 1:2 complex with a congruent melting point of 215.65 °K. It was determined that no other complexes formed in the solid state. This information resolved contradicting reports in the literature. The system, p-dioxane:dichloromethane, was found to contain …

During the spring of 1941, Dr. C.L. Hayward, of the Brigham Young University zoology department, while on a field trip with his ecology class found some interesting planaria.ns at a place called Stewart's Flats on Mt. Timpanogos, Utah County, Utah. A fellow teacher, Dr. D. E. Beck, sent live specimens to Dr. L. H. Hyman of the American Museum of Natural History for identification. Although the specimens arrived in New York as a "putrid smelling soup,"1 the specimens, through correspondence, were thought to be Polycelis coronata (Girard), the same species Hyman collected in South Dakota during August 1929.

A Comparative Study Of The Species Of The Genus Crotaphytus Holbrook (Iquanidae), Wilbur Gerald Robison Jr., Wilmer W. Tanner

The anterior musculature of C. wislizeni and C. collaris is described in detail and compared. Size and number relationships of the skull and its component bones, the sternum, the clavicle, the parts of the hyoid, the general body form, certain scales and teeth, and the eggs per clutch were determined for large samples of both species and then statistically compared. The general character of many structures is also compared and notes are made on C. reticulatus.

The differences encountered by this study, as well as the valid ones of those listed by Smith (1946:158–159) are not considered to be important …

Atriplex is a genus in the Chenopodiaceae, the perennial members of which are ecologically important in western North America. Seventeen species and one subspecies of perennial Atriplex occur in Utah and the northern deserts. Three of these species and the subspecies were described by the writer in a recent publication as a result of extensive field work leading to this study. These are A. welshii, A. navajoensis, A. bonnevillensis, and A. cuneata ssp. introgressa. The political views of J. Reuben Clark, Jr. have been of interest to the membership of the Mormon Church since the year 1933, when Clark was appointed second counselor to Heber. J. Grant, then President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This interest was generated In part by the various political positions of importance which Clark held since 1906, and by the numerous politically-oriented speeches which he gave from time to time throughout the Church and the nation.

The purpose of this study was: (1) to find the effect of temperature on the wet oxidation of chalcopyrite, pyrite, and copper sulfide over the biological and nonbiological range; (2) to determine the influence of ferrous and ferric iron and free oxygen(air) on the oxidation. The sulfide minerals studied were oxidized over a range of temperatures between 25° to 75° C. The optimum biological oxidation occurred near 35° C. The nonbiological oxidation was very slow at low temperatures but increased with increasing temperature. The effect of solutions used in leaching the various sulfides over the temperature range differred. A synthetic …

This is a comparative study of the vegetation and soils of an exclosure in the mountain brush vegetation of the Wasatch Mountains, Utah. The exclosure was fenced and initially analyzed during the summers of 1949-1950. The study area is located in Pole Canyon in the Uinta National Forest, a few miles northeast of Provo, Utah. The dominant woody species of the vegetation in the exclosure are big toothed maple (Acer grandidentatum) and Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii). After settlement of the area in and around Provo, Pole Canyon became overgrazed by livestock. Since 1949 the area has been protected from grazing. …

Dostoevsky On Crime And Revolution: A Study In Russian Nihilism, Louis C. Midgley

Although Dostoevsky deserves praise for his literary accomplishments, his ability to write does not necessarily translate into political savvy. Examining Dostoevsky's views on liberalism, nihilism, and socialism, as expressed in The Possessed, The Brothers Karamazov, The Diary of a Writer, and other works, the author concludes that Dostoevsky's faith in "holy Russia" was misplaced even as his vision of the violence resulting from nihilist thinking was more accurate.

The purpose of the study was to gain an increased understanding of what the L.D.S. person feels during the process of divorce and postdivorce readjustment by (1) developing an interview guide to obtain the necessary data on divorce, (2) determining how strong the feelings of failure, guilt, and trauma were at different phases of the divorce process, (3) determining how the feelings of failure, guilt, and trauma were related to membership in the L.D.S. Church, its teachings, and contacts with Church authorities, and (4) gaining insights which might provide a basis for later investigation.

The present study was initiated to determine the effect sorbitol has upon the enzymatic functions of thiamin; specifically, what effect sorbitol bas upon the alpha-ketoglutarate and pyruvate dehydrogenases activities of rat liver mitochondria. In addition, the effect of varying the dietary sorbitol concentration on the development of an athiaminosis was studied, particularly the effect on growth rate.

It was the purpose of this study to determine what aquatic plants were common to central Utah and to outline the ecological factors that control their distribution. The main emphasis throughout has been upon the more macroscopic aquatic plants. Such algae were included as was warranted by their size,, abundance and importance in the various habitats in which they grew. As this study progressed it became evident that there was a need for a broad survey-type study of the aquatic plants that would include essentially all of the wet lands of the central Utah region.
