Spinturnicid Mites Of Venezuela (Acarina: Spinturnicidae), C. Selby Herrin, Vernon J. Tipton

Brigham Young University Science Bulletin, Biological Series

The results of an extensive survey of spinturnicid mites of bats from Venezuela are presented in this paper. Approximately 30,000 bats were collected from a wide variety of life zones and localities. A representative sample was searched for ectoparasites. There are 3 genera of the family Spinturnicidae in Venezuela: Cameronieta, Periglischrus, and Spinturnix. Three previously described species of Cameronieta were found in the Venezuelan collection. Of the 7 species of Spinturnix previously described from the New World, 4 are reported from Venezuela. The genus Periglischrus constitutes by far the most significant segment of the Venezuelan collection. It is represented by …

Invasion Of Big Sagebrush (Artemisia Tridentata) By White Fir (Abies Concolor) On The Southeastern Slopes Of The Warner Mountains, California, Thomas R. Vale Sep 1975

Invasion Of Big Sagebrush (Artemisia Tridentata) By White Fir (Abies Concolor) On The Southeastern Slopes Of The Warner Mountains, California, Thomas R. Vale

Great Basin Naturalist

White fir (Abies concolor) appears to be invading vegetation dominated by big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) on the southeastern slopes of the Warner Mountains of extreme northeastern California. The time of initial tree establishment within the shrubs was determined by increment borings. Possible causes of the invasion involving specific climatic conditions, fire history, and grazing use of the area during years of the establishment were explored. Heavy grazing by domestic livestock, particularly sheep, appears responsible for altering the sagebrush-grass vegetation and allowing tree invasion.

The Effect Of Recreational Uses On Vegetation And Soil In The Buffalo Campground, Targhee National Forest, Island Park, Idaho, Susan Daines Foster Aug 1975

The Effect Of Recreational Uses On Vegetation And Soil In The Buffalo Campground, Targhee National Forest, Island Park, Idaho, Susan Daines Foster

Theses and Dissertations

The effect of trampling on vegetation and soil, as a result of recreational pressure, was studied in the Buffalo campground of the Targhee National Forest, Idaho. Site deterioration was most evident in the forty-two year old site. The tree stand had matured, but there were few young trees and tree reproduction had been reduced to ten seedlings per acre for Pinus contorta. Only two shrub species were sampled with a combined population of eight individuals per acre. Most of the grass species had been seeded; forbs provided 20% of the ground cover, 13% was bare ground and 71% litter. The …

A History Of The Program Bureau At Brigham Young University, Thomas Zimmerman

Student Works

The Brigham Young University Program Bureau has sent between 200 and 700 student programs throughout the world each- year. These programs provide students at Brigham Young University with the opportunity to exercise and increase their talents, and also provide entertainment throughout the world as a representative of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the United States of America. Several universities have bureaus which send out entertainment groups, but none compare in size or international acclaim to that of Brigham Young University. Recreation is a process of engaging in wholesome activities during leisure time in which an individual …

The Effect Of Lead And Zinc On Selenium Poisoning In Mice, Cynthia Joy Call Aug 1975

The Effect Of Lead And Zinc On Selenium Poisoning In Mice, Cynthia Joy Call

Theses and Dissertations

Trace elements, because they are effective in catalytic amounts, must be held in delicate balance with each other as well as with the macronutrients of the diet. Disturbances of these balances result in deficiency and toxicity symptoms. Toxic doses of selenium, lead, and zinc, for example, are known to cause anemia (1, 2, 3, 4) and growth depression (5, 3) in experimental animals.

Habitat Partitioning In A Community Of Passerine Birds, Robert C. Whitmore Aug 1975

Habitat Partitioning In A Community Of Passerine Birds, Robert C. Whitmore

Theses and Dissertations

Habitat partitioning was studied in a community of passerine birds in the Virgin River Valley of southwestern Utah. Ten habitat structure variables were measured for each of 24 species of passerine birds and several multivariate statistical techniques were used to determine the extent of habitat partitioning. Ordinations of species distributions along known environmental gradients were constructed using Principal Component Analysis and Stepwise Discriminant Analysis. Stepwise Discriminant Analysis was also used to determine which habitat variables were important in species separation. It was found that percent canopy cover was the most important variable. Two hundred seventy six pairs of species were …

Steady State Fluidics: The Static Matching Of Fluidic Amplifiers And Loads, Frank J. Redd Aug 1975

Steady State Fluidics: The Static Matching Of Fluidic Amplifiers And Loads, Frank J. Redd

Theses and Dissertations

"Fluidics" is the title applied to a relatively new technology which is concerned with the control of fluid power and the processing of information through the use of the fluid mechanical properties of the fluid medium itself. The absence of moving parts and the relatively low sensitivity to enviromental conditions suggest the probability that fluidic systems will prove to be faster and more reliable than the mechanically controlled (valves, diaphragms, springs, etc.) fluid systems which they are designed to replace.

Computerized Reduction Of Meteorologic Measurements From Irrigated And Nonirrigated Plots In Central Utah, Ferron L. Andersen, Paul R. Roper Jun 1975

Computerized Reduction Of Meteorologic Measurements From Irrigated And Nonirrigated Plots In Central Utah, Ferron L. Andersen, Paul R. Roper

Great Basin Naturalist

Two FORTRAN IV computer programs were developed to facilitate reduction of meteorologic data from irrigated and nonirrigated plots at Provo, Utah. The first program compiles and tabulates daily, monthly, and yearly summaries of precipitation as rain and/or snow, snowfall, total snow cover, soil moisture, dew, relative humidity, potential evaporation, cloud cover, and wind. Temperature values are tabulated for measurements taken in a standard weather shelter. 5 cm beneath soil surface under grass cover, at soil surface under grass cover, and on bare ground.

The second program enables complete computerized (Calcomp) construction, labeling, and graphing of 10 different meteorologic measurements and …
