Models And Output Are Interpreted In Conflicting Frames That Cause The Gaps To Be Unbridgeable, Rien Kolkman
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The unreceptiveness of potential end-user organisations to the potential benefits of IAMs en DSSs can be analysed and explained by frame reflection. The notion of frame is already used in social psychology, management sciences, and policy sciences. Frames are used by a person to make sense of their environment, to make observations and decisions rationally accountable, both to themselves and to others. Frames are relevant for communication and learning at the level of both individuals and organizations. Collectively shared frames may influence how knowledge is selected and organised. This abstract focuses on the implications of frame research (Kolkman, 2005) on …

International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
By copying information from sources and distributing it to new destinations we do not loseinformation at the sources. Nevertheless, exchange of information is still restricted by patent law, as well asby institutional, cultural and traditional hurdles that create protective barriers hindering the free flow of thisvaluable commodity. We believe that one of the greatest challenges we face in creating a new researchparadigm will be building the community modeling and information sharing culture. How do we getengineers and scientists to put aside their traditional modes of doing business? How do we provide theincentives that will be required to make these changes …
Combining Participatory Approaches And Modelling: Lessons From Two Practical Cases Of Policy Support, H. Van Deldena, Guy Engelen
Combining Participatory Approaches And Modelling: Lessons From Two Practical Cases Of Policy Support, H. Van Deldena, Guy Engelen
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In this paper two different policy exercises carried out with the METRONAMICA land use modelling framework are discussed. The first aims at finding suitable locations for the expansion of residential and business activities in Utrecht Province, the Netherlands. It takes into consideration future economic and demographic developments as well as all other land use claims in the province. The second was carried out as part of the EEA-PRELUDE project and aimed at exploring the impacts of different scenarios on land use developments and the state of the environment in Europe. Both exercises are similar in combining a participatory approach with …
Modelling Farmer Decision Making For Natural Resource Management Outcomes, Brett A. Bryan, J. Ward, Neville D. Crossman
Modelling Farmer Decision Making For Natural Resource Management Outcomes, Brett A. Bryan, J. Ward, Neville D. Crossman
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
This paper presents a conceptual modelling and simulation methodology that incorporates dryland farmer decision making into regional- and landscape-level natural resource management (NRM) planning. Decision making for many NRM on ground actions is made at the farm level so it makes sense to incorporate farmer behaviour into regional planning for meeting regional environmental objectives. Our model applies multi-attribute farmer utility functions within an agent-based simulation environment to model temporal change in land use and landscapes resulting from farmer implementation of on ground NRM actions. Farmer decision profiles are characterized using a survey of over 500 farmers. Landscape futures can also …

Uncertainty In Environmental Decision-Making: Issues, Challenges And Future Directions, Holger R. Maier, James C. Ascough Ii
Uncertainty In Environmental Decision-Making: Issues, Challenges And Future Directions, Holger R. Maier, James C. Ascough Ii
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Environmental decision-making is complicated by the complexity of natural systems and the often competing needs of multiple stakeholders. Modelling tools are often used to assist at various stages of the environmental decision-making process. If such models are to provide effective decision support, the uncertainties associated with all aspects of the decision-making process need to be taken into account explicitly. However, as models become more complex in order to better represent integrated environmental, social and economic systems, achieving this goal becomes more difficult. Some of the important issues that need to be addressed in relation to the incorporation of uncertainty in …

Environmental Policy Aid Under Uncertainty, J. Myšiak, J. D. Brown
Environmental Policy Aid Under Uncertainty, J. Myšiak, J. D. Brown
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Uncertainty pervades all aspects of environmental policy making. Numerous typologies and techniques have been developed to conceptualise, classify, assess (qualitatively and quantitatively), propagate, control, reduce and communicate uncertainty. Such assessments are a necessary but insufficient condition for reducing uncertainty in environmental decision making. In this paper we discuss how uncertainty is translated into decisions. Since this entails numerous value judgements and trade-offs which are sensitive to how policy problems are framed, we argue that perceptions of uncertainty cannot be viewed independently of the (quality of) the policy process that it intends to inform. Thus, uncertainty management should not be limited …

Application Of Mesocasimir: Assessment Of Baetis Rhodani Habitat Suitability, A. M. Mouton, M. Schneider, I. Kopecki, Peter L. M. Goethals, N. De Pauw
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The assessment of the ecological status of running waters at a mesohabitat scale is commonly based on fish. Nevertheless, due to their strong dependence on a good physical and chemical habitat, macroinvertebrate species can also be used for this assessment. A new approach is presented by applying the MesoCASiMiR module of the CASiMiR modeling system. In this way, the habitat suitability for the mayfly Baetis rhodani was modeled at a mesohabitat scale in the river Zwalm (Flanders, Belgium). The model inference system was based on fuzzy logic. Fuzzy variable sets and rules were derived from expert knowledge and from a …

Bottom-Up, Decision Support System Development : A Wetland Salinity Management Application In California's San Joaquin Valley, N. W. T. Quinn
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Seasonally managed wetlands in the Grasslands Basin of California’s San Joaquin Valley provide food and shelter for migratory wildfowl during winter months and sport for waterfowl hunters during the annual duck season. Surface water supply to these wetland contain salt which, when drained to the San Joaquin River during the annual drawdown period, negatively impacts downstream agricultural riparian water diverters. Recent environmental regulation, limiting discharges salinity to the San Joaquin River and primarily targeting agricultural non-point sources, now addresses return flows from seasonally managed wetlands. Real-time water quality management has been advocated as a means of matching wetland return flows …

Without A Common Mental Model A Dss Makes No Sense (A New Approach To Frame Analysis Using Mental Models), M. J. Kolkman, A. Van Der Veen
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In order to understand why the use of model software and its results in decision making is surrounded with a diversity of problems, this paper presents a new theoretical framework. The framework is based on the notions of frame and mental model that are commonly used in social sciences and psychology. Mental models are found to guide the activities of knowledge producing scientists, DSS builders, decision makers and stakeholders. These activities are described in a modelling cycle and a decision making cycle. The model – both software and mental – functions as an intermediate for knowledge transfer. The theoretical framework, …
Parenting Practices In Emerging Adulthood: Development Of A New Measure, Melanie Easley Mckay
Parenting Practices In Emerging Adulthood: Development Of A New Measure, Melanie Easley Mckay
Theses and Dissertations
Given that more and more young people are living at home well into their twenties, and parents no longer see their children as adults until well into their mid to late twenties (Nelson, Walker, Carroll, Madsen, Barry, & Badger, 2006), parents may continue to "parent" for much longer than we have typically believed. Although parenting may still play an important role, little research has been done examining parenting in emerging adulthood, including its correlates and outcomes. As such, there is a need for a measure of parenting that is appropriate for use in emerging adulthood. The current study attempted to …
Assessing Effects Of Iq On Sociable And Withdrawn Behaviors In Children With Language Impairment, Amanda Lyn Bradshaw
Assessing Effects Of Iq On Sociable And Withdrawn Behaviors In Children With Language Impairment, Amanda Lyn Bradshaw
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of IQ on subtypes of sociable and withdrawn behaviors in children with language impairment (LI). Research has suggested that children with LI are more likely to experience difficulty with social interaction than their typically developing peers (Brinton & Fujiki, 1999; Rice, 1991). The Teacher Behavior Rating Scale (Hart & Robinson, 1996) was used to compare sociable and withdrawn behaviors in 19 children with LI and 19 children with typically developing language. IQ scores for each participant were obtained by administering the Universal Nonverbal Intelligence Test (Bracken & McCallum, 2003). These …
Negotiation Through Identification: Elizabeth Tudor's Use Of Sprezzatura In Three Speeches, Alisa Brough
Negotiation Through Identification: Elizabeth Tudor's Use Of Sprezzatura In Three Speeches, Alisa Brough
Theses and Dissertations
Elizabeth Tudor, Queen of England, weaves the courtier's strategy of sprezzatura throughout her public orations in order to help her identify with her audience of courtiers, scholars, and politicians. Through her use of sprezzatura, Elizabeth woos her audience and transcends the differences of opinion that lead to conflict between the Queen and her audience members. Using Kenneth Burke's theory of rhetoric as identification, this thesis employs rhetorical analysis in order to discover how Queen Elizabeth's use of sprezzatura enables her to portray herself as a humanist scholar, a political servant, and a dedicated defender of her country and thus, identify …
Superficial Self-Harm Behavior: Helping Young Women Who Hurt Themselves, Katherine D. Ryan
Superficial Self-Harm Behavior: Helping Young Women Who Hurt Themselves, Katherine D. Ryan
Theses and Dissertations
Roughly 1 to 4% of the population engages in self-harm. Superficial self-harm is reported by more young women, than young men. Appropriate responses from family, friends, and other important individuals are a key ingredient in facilitating recovery. Non-therapists, such as family, friends, and school personnel often wish to assist young women who self-harm, but the problem is complex and they are often unsure of how to respond. Current studies primarily focus on the clinical interventions for self-harm, while very few have investigated the perspectives of the individuals who self-harm. This study investigated the perspectives of young women who self-harm in …

Educators' Perceptions Of Collaborative Planning Processes For Students With Disabilities, Nari Carter
Theses and Dissertations
When students with disabilities are included in general education classes, collaboration between special and general education teachers is necessary to ensure that the students have access to the general education curriculum and also have supports that enable them to benefit from their education. This paper reports the results of a phenomenological study that investigated the nature of a collaborative planning experience for pairs of special and general education teachers. From the teachers' descriptions of their experience, sharing common philosophies about educating students with disabilities was an important aspect of successful collaborative planning. Collaboration in this experience was voluntary and was …

Three different home plans were obtained from a local builder and seven different energy efficient packages were created. Using Hot2000 the heating and cooling loads were calculated for each building, with each energy efficient package, in each of the four major cardinal directions. The averages were taken and the payback information was calculated. The payback information included the increased cost of the package, the increase in the mortgage payment, the annual savings from heating and cooling bills, …
The Mechanism Of Assembly Of The G-Protein Beta Gamma Subunit Dimer By Ck2 Phosphorylated Phosducin-Like Protein And The Chaperonin Containing Tcp-1, Christine M. Baker
The Mechanism Of Assembly Of The G-Protein Beta Gamma Subunit Dimer By Ck2 Phosphorylated Phosducin-Like Protein And The Chaperonin Containing Tcp-1, Christine M. Baker
Theses and Dissertations
Phosducin-like protein (PhLP) binds G-protein beta gamma subunits and is thought to assist in assembly of the G-protein beta gamma dimer. Phosphorylation of PhLP at serine residues 18-20 by the casein kinase 2 (CK2) appears to play an essential role in this process. PhLP has also been shown to interact with the chaperonin containing TCP-1 (CCT) atop its apical domain, not entering the substrate folding cavity. However, the physiological role of the PhLP-CCT interaction in G-protein beta gamma dimer formation remains unclear. This study addresses the mechanism of G-protein beta gamma assembly by exploring the specific roles of CCT and …
Active Learning In A Large Enrollment Introductory Biology Class: Problem Solving, Formative Feedback, And Teaching As Learning, Diane Flint Robison
Active Learning In A Large Enrollment Introductory Biology Class: Problem Solving, Formative Feedback, And Teaching As Learning, Diane Flint Robison
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to take a case study approach to exploring student learning experiences in a large enrollment introductory biology class. Traditionally such classes are taught through the lecture method with limited instructor-student interaction and minimal student-centered learning (Lewis & Woodward, 1984; Wulff, Nyquist, & Abbott, 1987). Biology 120 taught at Brigham Young University winter semester 2006 by John Bell was chosen as the case for the study due to its large enrollment (263) and its innovative pedagogy. In the classroom, students applied their learning through a variety of student-centered activities including solving problems, discussing concepts with …
How Parents And Their Adolescent Children "Talk The Talk" In Religious Conversations, Jennifer Yorgason Thatcher
How Parents And Their Adolescent Children "Talk The Talk" In Religious Conversations, Jennifer Yorgason Thatcher
Theses and Dissertations
This study builds on previous research regarding parent-child religious conversations to explore the elements and bidirectional processes of parent-adolescent religious conversations. It employs qualitative analyses of interviews with highly religious parents and adolescents representing the major Abrahamic faiths (Christianity, Judaism, Islam) from New England and Northern California. Variations in content, structure, conversational processes, and bidirectional influence are summarized in a conceptual model. Findings suggest that the quality of conversations is greater for parents and adolescents when they are youth-centered than when they are parent-centered.

Advances In Student Self-Authorship: A Program Evaluation Of The Community Standards Model, Klinton E. Hobbs
Theses and Dissertations
Universities are increasingly applying student developmental theories in a variety of contexts in order to better understand students and to accomplish institutional educational objectives. Robert Kegan's constructive-developmental theory has been utilized in the creation of the Community Standards Model, a program designed for use in university residence halls. The purpose of the Model is to promote student development from Kegan's third order of consciousness, in which student identity is based on a fusion of their peers' expectations and ideas, to the fourth order of consciousness, in which one becomes the author of his or her own values, beliefs, and ideals. …
The Relationship Of Implicit Family Process Rules To Adolescent Presentation Of Psychological Systems, Ian David Feinauer
The Relationship Of Implicit Family Process Rules To Adolescent Presentation Of Psychological Systems, Ian David Feinauer
Theses and Dissertations
Implicit family process rules refer to unspoken rules about family beliefs and expectations about communication, closeness, and organization and are an important dimension of family functioning that may have a powerful influence over adolescent psychological well being. This study focused on the relationship between implicit family process rules and adolescent psychological symptoms such as: Hostility, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, and somatization. It was hypothesized that more facilitative implicit family process rules would be related to fewer adolescent psychological symptoms. In addition, a model was created that included theexogenousindependent variables of family status, (defined as intact-marriage or non-intact), treatment status (whether …
