Poisonous Plants Of Utah, Jack D. Brotherson, Lee A. Szyska, William E. Evenson Sep 1980

Poisonous Plants Of Utah, Jack D. Brotherson, Lee A. Szyska, William E. Evenson

Great Basin Naturalist

A list of the major livestock-poisoning plants has been compiled for the state of Utah. Two hundred fifteen taxa representing 36 families, 119 genera, and 209 species occur within the state. Forty-one percent are from two families, the Asteraceae and the Fabaceae. The remaining families of major importance are: Poaceae, Ranunculaceae, Solanaceae, Chenopodiaceae, Brassicaceae, Ascelpiadaceae, Liliaceae, and Euphorbiaceae. Sixty-nine percent of the genera occur with a single species. Thirty-three percent of the taxa are introduced to the state. Most of the plants are insect pollinated; 57 percent are herbaceous perennials.

Most livestock poisoning occurs during the spring. This is due …

Robert H. Billigmeier, A Crisis In Swiss Pluralism, Leo Schelbert Jun 1980

Robert H. Billigmeier, A Crisis In Swiss Pluralism, Leo Schelbert

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

The author, Professor of Sociology at the University of California at Santa Barbara, presents a study that is clearly a labor of love, an analytical tour de force, and a toughminded professional diagnosis. It is devoted to the Swiss segment of the once large community of Romansh speakers who resided in the Alpine regions between Italy and Northern Europe. The remnant occupies today a similar position as the Basques in Spain and France, the Flemish in Belgium, or the Lapps in the northern borderlands who are also encircled by more numerous and powerful linguistic groups. Professor Billigmeier views the Romansh, …

Pinyin Vs. Wade-Giles For Library Purposes, Beatrice Ohta, Ben Tucker Feb 1980

Pinyin Vs. Wade-Giles For Library Purposes, Beatrice Ohta, Ben Tucker

Journal of East Asian Libraries

New ideas about romanization schemes seldom receive unanimous acceptance by librarians. What is tried and true always has strong adherents, while the proponents of new systems are as vehement in their partisanship, sometimes as automatically as are the traditionalists who cling to the status quo. It is inherent In the nature of all writing systems that they are less than perfectly hospitable one to the other, a fact that provides ample opportunity for claims both pro and con. The present controversy over Chinese romanization, however, appears to have less justification for debate than most. Since the public is already using …

The Educational Philosophy Of N.F.S. Grundtvig A Century Of Influence: A Case Study Of A Lutheran Congregation, Omaha, Nebraska, Ruth Thorup Herman

The Bridge

When the editor of The Bridge asked if I would write my reaction to my dissertation, I did a great deal of thinking. How would I write about my feelings which covered the four years during which I did the research and writing of this paper? I concluded that a historical review would give me the best opportunity to present my reaction to my research. Then, when he asked me to review my own study since it related my experiences, I concluded that both could be incorporated in one effort if I were permitted to make personal references.

Thirty Years Of Emigrating, Lis Jorgensen Jan 1980

Thirty Years Of Emigrating, Lis Jorgensen

The Bridge

Contemporary emigration is both like and unlike the earlier emigration of Scandinavia.

The emigrants came to North America in the nineteenth century largely because of overpopulation in their own countries creating famine or purely for economic reasons. In North America they could obtain free or cheap land and thus make a better living for their families. According to early accounts, however, they often suffered even greater hardships here than at home. One question that seemed to bother the Danish settlers was whether they had done the right thing in leaving the old country. They wondered if in their struggle for …

The Epoch Of Biotic Impoverishment, Thomas E. Lovejoy Dec 1979

The Epoch Of Biotic Impoverishment, Thomas E. Lovejoy

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

1978 was the first year in the history of man that legal power to eradicate a species was established. It is one of a number of signs of rapidly accelerating rates of extinction which may result in reduction of biological diversity by one-seventh to one-fifth, with a parallel reduction in the planet's capacity to support man and a permanent reduction in the potential body of biological knowledge. Species loss of such a degree would warrant designating the close of the Recent epoch and the opening of a new one of Biotic Impoverishment. A great deal of the extinctions will occur …

Endangered Species: Costs And Benefits, Edwin P. Pister Dec 1979

Endangered Species: Costs And Benefits, Edwin P. Pister

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

Biologists are often placed in the difficult position of defending a threatened habitat or animal with vague reasoning and faulty logic, simply because they have no better rationale at their immediate disposal. This places them at a distinct disadvantage and literally at the mercy of resource exploiters and their easily assignable dollar values. Although the initial dollar cost of delaying precluding "developing" may be significant, the long-term benefits of saving the biological entities which might otherwise be destroyed are likewise great and are measurable in concrete terms which society is only now beginning to appreciate. Case histories are presented, a …

Emergence Data And Artificial Rearing Media For An Aspen Bark Beetle, Trypophloeus Populi (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), David A. Stewart, Gary M. Booth, Jerold L. Petty Jun 1979

Emergence Data And Artificial Rearing Media For An Aspen Bark Beetle, Trypophloeus Populi (Coleoptera: Scolytidae), David A. Stewart, Gary M. Booth, Jerold L. Petty

Great Basin Naturalist

The aspen bark beetle, Trypophloeus populi Hopkins, was studied in nature to determine the number of larvae emerging from galleries. Fifty-five percent of the larvae in aspen galleries in the field developed into adults. An artificial rearing medium for third instar larvae of the beetles was also developed from aspen bark sawdust and nutrient agar. The optimum medium contained a ratio of 1:2 parts of agar to sawdust which gave 70 percent emergence of the beetles and less than 10 percent of adult mortality over the 36 days following emergence.

Review Of Tularemia In Utah And The Great Basin, Harold E. Stark Jun 1979

Review Of Tularemia In Utah And The Great Basin, Harold E. Stark

Great Basin Naturalist

This is a compilation of tularemia research conducted in Utah, particularly at U.S. Army Dugway Proving Ground (DPG), Utah, and an evaluation of this information in relation to the current status of tularemia studies. A brief history of tularemia in Utah and a review of field and laboratory studies are included.

Human cases of tularemia occur throughout Utah during all seasons of the year. An analysis of recent human disease reveals a concentration of cases in rural areas, with a greater seasonal occurrence in late summer and early fall.

Mormon Montage: Mormons In The World: A Production Script, Kris Marele Morgan

Theses and Dissertations

This project makes available material that will help help drama directors cast young people in an improvisational show. This thesis includes suggestions for try-outs, a play manuscript with specific stage directions understandable to an inexperienced director, preparation exercises to help actors develop necessary dramatic skills, an index to these exercises arranged by areas of skill development, notes to the director, an extensive bibliography, and additional references for further research. The exercises can also be used for development of actors in any production and may be applied to education programs.

The play "Mormon Montage" concerns Mormon contributions to such fields as …
