The Effect Of Health Insurance On Retirement, Brigitte C. Madrian Jan 1994

The Effect Of Health Insurance On Retirement, Brigitte C. Madrian

Faculty Publications

FOR DECADES health insurance in the United States has been provided to most nonelderly Americans through their own or a family member's employment. This system of employment-based health insurance has evolved largely because of the substantial cost advantages that employers enjoy in supplying health insurance. By pooling large numbers of individuals, employers face significantly lower administrative expenses than do individuals. In addition, employer expenditures on health insurance are tax deductible, but individual expenditures are generally not.1

Despite these cost advantages, there is widespread dissatisfaction with this system of employment-based health insurance. Many people are excluded because not all employers …

Morphology And Growth Variation Of Agropyron Smithii Rydb. (Western Wheatgrass) At Different Salinity Levels, Rengen Ueng, Ivo E. Lindauer Dec 1993

Morphology And Growth Variation Of Agropyron Smithii Rydb. (Western Wheatgrass) At Different Salinity Levels, Rengen Ueng, Ivo E. Lindauer

Great Basin Naturalist

The purpose of this study was to determine the morphology and growth responses of Agropyron smithii Rydb. To various saline environments as evaluated in the laboratory. Agropyron smithii Rydb. (Rosana) seeds were germinated, transplanted into nutrient solutions with NaCl concentrations of 0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 mM, and grown for 80 days. Plant height, length of culm, and number of culms per plant were significantly reduced by the presence of NaCl in the nutrient solutions. As the external NaCl concentrations increased, values of root and plant ratio and leaf dry/fresh mass ratio increased significantly; biomass decreased significantly. …

On The Development Of The Institute Of Chinese Studies Library At Heidelberg University, Thomas H. Hahn Dec 1993

On The Development Of The Institute Of Chinese Studies Library At Heidelberg University, Thomas H. Hahn

Journal of East Asian Libraries

My initial thought about what to contribute to this commemorative issue included such matters as International Interlibrary Loan (IILL), resource sharing, shared cataloging projects and, in general, defining proper fields of cooperation between the European Association of Sinological Librarians (EASL) and the Committee on East Asian Libraries. Since these matters were already voiced and discussed during EASL's visit to Washington and other Chinese, Japanese, and Korean (CJK) libraries in April 1992,1 (as chairman of EASL) decided not to repeat them again. However, it goes without saying that these issues should not be dropped or neglected and it is my sincere …

A Branch Apart: East Asian Collections In A Research Library Context, Diane E. Perushek Dec 1993

A Branch Apart: East Asian Collections In A Research Library Context, Diane E. Perushek

Journal of East Asian Libraries

Much has been written in library literature of late about access and ownership and how libraries should respond organizationally to the new role libraries are developing to meet the dual challenges of pervasive information technology and reduced budgets. There are repeated calls for libraries to give customized service, be intimately aware of users' needs and deliver documents at the point of use. In an article on the efficacy of branch libraries entitled "Organization Misfits," it is posited that departmental (or "branch") libraries, due to their size and flexibility, can provide models for this type of service with little change to …

Special Reports, Mihoko Miki, Yasuko Matsudo, Tai-Loi Ma, Amy V. Heinrich, Kimii Mitsui

Journal of East Asian Libraries

This task force was formed in August 1992 to work for the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) Foreign acquisitions Project for Japanese materials. The charge of the task force is to write a report which assesses current strengths and weaknesses of the major United States and Canadian Japanese research collections, determines their needs and priorities, and offers concrete action/funding proposals to address the identified problems. Fortunately, a number of previous reports and studies on the issues are available, and we reviewed and studied them carefully, including the "Survey" (1980) by Naomi Fukuda, the Perushek Report (1990), and the reports of …

Archival And Library Resources Within The Mid-Atlantic States Region For Advancing Scholarship In East Asian Studies, Frank Joseph Shulman

Journal of East Asian Libraries

The Mid-Atlantic States region is the home to a vast array of archival and library resources that have long-term research value for scholars and students interested in the history, politics, commerce and culture of the countries of East Asia and in American interaction with China, Japan and Korea. A series of fifteen panels between 1977 and 1991 presented a wide range of papers about some of these resources at the annual meetings of the Mid-Atlantic Region/Association for Asian Studies (MAR/AAS).

Effects Of Crosstalk On Fidelity In Page-Oriented Volume Holographic Optical Data Storage, Gregory P. Nordin, P. Asthana May 1993

Effects Of Crosstalk On Fidelity In Page-Oriented Volume Holographic Optical Data Storage, Gregory P. Nordin, P. Asthana

Faculty Publications

Using numerical simulation, we quantitatively examine the effects of cross talk on the recall fidelity of stored binary data in a page-oriented volume holographic memory system. We discuss the trade-off between the signal-to-noise ratio of the reconstructed bits and the optical throughput of the system (i.e., the fraction of the incident beam that is diffracted to the detector plane). We show that significant gains in the signal-to-noise ratio can be achieved with modest decreases in optical throughput in the region where the highest throughput occurs. The magnitude of this trade-off is influenced by both beam degeneracy and coherent recording cross …

Microbial Spatial Heterogeneity In Microbiotic Crusts In Colorado National Monument. I. Algae, Anne E. Grondin, Jeffrey R. Johansen Apr 1993

Microbial Spatial Heterogeneity In Microbiotic Crusts In Colorado National Monument. I. Algae, Anne E. Grondin, Jeffrey R. Johansen

Great Basin Naturalist

Spatial heterogeneity in visually similar sites under Utah juniper canopy in Colorado National Monument was examined. Sample sites were arranged in a transect 24 m long, such that distances between samples were 0.013 m, 0.03 m, 1.0 m, 12 m, and 24 m. Twenty-five taxa of algae were observed, mostly belonging to Cyanophyta. Algal density varied by more than an order of magnitude within the 46 samples examined. The coefficients of variation for each distance class were very similar, demonstrating that algal patchiness can be as significant on a scale less than 0.013 m as it is on a scale …

Microbial Spatial Heterogeneity In Microbiotic Crusts In Colorado National Monument. Ii. Bacteria, Catherine Cole Wheeler, Valerie R. Flechtner, Jeffrey R. Johansen

Great Basin Naturalist

Microbial spatial heterogeneity and bacterial composition of homogeneous surface soils showing evident microbiotic crust development located under Utah juniper canopies in Colorado National Monument were studied. Four distinct homogeneous sampling sites positioned along a 12-m transect were compared on the basis of bacterial density and taxa composition.

Bacterial densities showed a range differing by several orders of magnitude. In comparisons of adjacent soil samples or samples taken from two different sampling sites within close proximity, adjacent samples showed no more similarity to each other on the basis of bacterial density or taxa composition than did more widely separated samples. The …

Interview: The Biological Evidence For Homosexuality Reappraised, William Byne

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

Because of recent media reports and public interest in the role of biological and genetic factors in the development of homosexuality, the editor decided some information regarding this topic might be useful for AMCAP members. Dr. William Byne has recently published several professional articles in which he has criticized the biological and genetic evidence relevant to the etiology of homosexuality. Dr. Byne graciously consented to be interviewed for the AMCAP Journal.

Analysis Of Weighted Fan-Out/Fan-In Volume Holographic Interconnections, Gregory P. Nordin, P. Asthana, B. Keith Jenkins, A. R. Tanguay Mar 1993

Analysis Of Weighted Fan-Out/Fan-In Volume Holographic Interconnections, Gregory P. Nordin, P. Asthana, B. Keith Jenkins, A. R. Tanguay

Faculty Publications

The feasibility of employing volume holographic techniques for the implementation of highly multiplexed weighted fan-out/fan-in interconnections is analyzed on the basis of interconnection fidelity, optical throughput, and complexity of recording schedule or implementation hardware. These feasibility criteria were quantitatively evaluated using the optical beam propagation method to numerically simulate the diffraction characteristics of volume holographic interconnections recorded in a linear holographic material. We find that conventional interconnection architectures (that are based on a single coherent optical source) exhibit a direct trade-off between interconnection fidelity and optical throughput on the one hand, and recording schedule or hardware complexity on the other. …

The Sword Of Laban As A Symbol Of Divine Authority And Kingship, Brett L. Holbrook Jan 1993

The Sword Of Laban As A Symbol Of Divine Authority And Kingship, Brett L. Holbrook

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Swords often symbolize divine authority and kingship. Numerous examples from the mythology, literature, and history of the world attest to distinct patterns. The sword of Laban from the Book of Mormon fits these patterns and can be compared to the sword of Goliath. The sword of Laban can also be traced as part of the royal regalia that provides authority throughout Nephite history and later as it appears in the restoration. The sword of Laban as associated with Joseph Smith came to be an additional witness of his authority and of the divine sanction for his work.
