Causes Of Domestic Violence, Jennifer J. Morris Sep 1994

Causes Of Domestic Violence, Jennifer J. Morris

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

The family is supposedly the most loving and supportive institution; unfortunately, it is also the most violent. This paper defines the family unit and also violence. Five major factors contributing to domestic violence are also outlined: stress, personal dispositions, social isolation, cultural and societal norms, and situational factors.

A Latter-Day Saint Home Education: Passing On A Goodly Heritage, Abbie Jane Birch Aug 1994

A Latter-Day Saint Home Education: Passing On A Goodly Heritage, Abbie Jane Birch

Theses and Dissertations

Education is examined within the context of religious beliefs and values found in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons). Education is defined as the process of becoming like God. An investigation is conducted into the stewardship and responsibility parents have for the education of their children. This responsibility is determined to be a sacred stewardship that cannot simply be delegated to others in society. All education is shown to be religious in nature. Conflicts between the beliefs and values of different members of society are found to be at the heart of many of the difficulties in …

Inversion Of Light Scattering Measurements For Particle Size And Optical Constants: Experimental Study, Matthew R. Jones, Keng H. Leong, M. Quinn Brewster, Bill P. Curry Jun 1994

Inversion Of Light Scattering Measurements For Particle Size And Optical Constants: Experimental Study, Matthew R. Jones, Keng H. Leong, M. Quinn Brewster, Bill P. Curry

Faculty Publications

Measurements of the light scattered by a sample contain information regarding the physical properties of the sample. Laser light-scattering measurements can be made unobtrusively in environments that are inaccessible to other types of measurements, so laser light-scattering techniques have become an important tool in aerosol research. The primary difficulty associated with using light-scattering techniques to determine aerosol particle properties is inverting the measurements or extracting the desired information from the measurements. In this study we use a 15-channel polar nephelometer to measure the light-scattering patterns of monodisperse polystyrene spheres. The light-scattering measurements are inverted, and the particle size distribution function …

The Literature Of The Romandie: Switzerland's Wild West, Barbara Villiger Jun 1994

The Literature Of The Romandie: Switzerland's Wild West, Barbara Villiger

Swiss American Historical Society Review

Geneva's best-known writer lives in France. French Switzerland's best known woman writer lives in Neuchatel, but she is Hungarian. And to close the triangle - Switzerland's most successful writer in Paris last year is by no means a French Swiss but a German-speaking Parisian of choice. As regards the first author, the Genevan writer living in France, I'm talking about Robert Pinget; as regards the second author, the Hungarian living in Neuch~el, about Agota Kristof; and in the third instance, the Parisian by choice, about Paul Nizon. Before focusing on the two writers of today's talk--Pinget and Kristof--I'd like to …

Some Physiological Variations Of Agropyron Smithii Rydb. (Western Wheatgrass) At Different Salinity Levels, Rengen Ueng, Ivo E. Lindauer, Warren R. Buss

Great Basin Naturalist

The purpose of this study was to determine the physiological responses of Agropyron smithii Rydb. to various saline environments as evaluated in the laboratory. Agropyron smithii Rydb. (Rosana) seeds were germinated, transplanted into nutrient solutions with NaCl concentrations of 0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 mM, and grown for 80 days in a growth chamber. Results indicated that leaf water potential, relative water content of leaf tissue, and concentrations of Na, K, and Cl in plant tissue were significantly affected by increasing NaCl concentration. However, leaf chlorophyll concentration and concentrations of Ca and Mg in plant tissue were …

Resolving Conflicts Of Worldviews: Lds Women And Television, Daniel A. Stout Apr 1994

Resolving Conflicts Of Worldviews: Lds Women And Television, Daniel A. Stout

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

While disagreement exists about the impact of television viewing on LDS family life, this research takes an audience-focused approached to the question of "media effects" by examining how a sample of LDS women describe experiences with television in their own words. Three "interpretive communities" reflecting different strategies for resolving television-related conflicts in the home are identified. These diverse perspectives about the role of television in LDS family life provide a useful point of departure for counselors and other professionals seeking to understand the relationship between television viewing and family conflicts.

Effects Of Cobble Embeddedness On The Microdistribution Of The Sculpin Cottus Beldingi And Its Stonefly Prey, Roger J. Haro, Merlyn A. Brusven Feb 1994

Effects Of Cobble Embeddedness On The Microdistribution Of The Sculpin Cottus Beldingi And Its Stonefly Prey, Roger J. Haro, Merlyn A. Brusven

Great Basin Naturalist

Laboratory experiments were undertaken to assess the effects of three levels of cobble embeddedness on the microdistribution of the sculpin Cottus beldingi and its stonefly prey, Skwala Americana. Experiments were conducted separately and together as predator and prey in temperature- and flow-controlled artificial streams. When tested either separately or together, both the predator sculpin and its stonefly prey occurred in significantly greater numbers on substrata having unembedded cobbles than substrata having half- or completely embedded cobbles. Stonefly densities were greater in substrata having unembedded cobbles even though predator densities within the more embedded cobble patches were significantly lower. These …

What's In A Name? Book Of Mormon Language, Names, And [Metonymic] Naming, Gordon C. Thomasson Jan 1994

What's In A Name? Book Of Mormon Language, Names, And [Metonymic] Naming, Gordon C. Thomasson

Journal of Book of Mormon Studies

Anthropological perspectives lend insight on names and on the social and literary function of names in principle and in the Book of Mormon. A discussion of the general function of names in kinship; secret names; and names, ritual, and rites of passage precedes a Latter-day Saint perspective. Names and metonymy are used symbolically. Examples include biblical and Book of Mormon metonymic naming, nomenclature, and taxonomy. Biblical laws of purity form the foundation for a pattern of metonymic associations with the name Lamanite, where the dichotomy of clean/unclean is used to give name to social alienation and pollution.

Brother Brigham Challenges The Saints, Hugh Nibley Jan 1994

Brother Brigham Challenges The Saints, Hugh Nibley

Maxwell Institute Publications

This volume in the collected works of Hugh Nibley features the gifted Latter-day Saint scholar’s reflections on the thoughts of Brigham Young regarding politics, education, leadership, and the environment. Nibley has brought together a priceless collection of the early Mormon leader’s counsel to the Saints of his era—counsel that is still relevant today. Add to these prophetic insights the scholarship and plain speaking that characterize Dr. Nibley’s works and the result is an eye-opening and sobering invitation to reevaluate our priorities.

The timeliness of Brigham’s counsel on these topics will quickly become apparent to readers, as will the unique insights …

Prisons: Are Boot Camps A Feasible Alternative?, Luke A. Brennan Jan 1994

Prisons: Are Boot Camps A Feasible Alternative?, Luke A. Brennan

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

The traditional prison system is facing the crisis of massive overcrowding and inefficiency. An alternative to this inefficient overcrowding of prisons is shock incarceration, or boot camps. Boot camps aim to rehabilitate, incapacitate, punish, deter, and reduce overcrowding and cost of the traditional prison system. Boot Camps meet those aims and should be considered an effective to the traditional prison system.

Guinevere's Kidneys, Or The Lancelot–Grail Cycle And The Rise Of Realism, Norris J. Lacy Jan 1994

Guinevere's Kidneys, Or The Lancelot–Grail Cycle And The Rise Of Realism, Norris J. Lacy

Quidditas

One of the most remarkable monuments of medieval literature in any language is the thirteenth-century French Lancelot–Grail Cycle (also called the Prose Lancelot, the Vulgate Cycle of Arthurian Romance, or the Pseudo-Map Cycle—the last because the texts identify the author as Walter Map, who complicated matters, however, by dying well before the cycle was written). Before turning to the subject indicated in my title, I'll situate the cycle and offer a few details about its phenomenal importance.

Risk-Taking Predispositions Among Mormon Women: Improving Communication About Health And Environmental Risks, Shelly Nicholls Jan 1994

Risk-Taking Predispositions Among Mormon Women: Improving Communication About Health And Environmental Risks, Shelly Nicholls

Theses and Dissertations

This study measures risk-taking predisposition among a conservative religious population of women, in this instance Mormon women. Risk taking is defined as a recognition of some probability of negative consequences to an action, which can include the loss of a potential reward as well as a punishment. A risk-taking predisposition results when individuals are not risk aversive but, in fact, enjoy risk taking.

Survey research collected at two conferences in Utah reveal the likelihood of moderate levels of rebellious and adventurous risk-taking predisposition among the over 500 Mormon women respondents. It is suggested that religious affiliation or economic and educational …

Youth In Gangs: Prevention And Reform, C. Micheal Rassmussen Jan 1994

Youth In Gangs: Prevention And Reform, C. Micheal Rassmussen

Brigham Young University Prelaw Review

In the past decade, street gangs have grown both in size and sophistication. These groups of youth are now spreading from the major cities to many suburban and rural areas. As the problems have increase, the need for a solution has exploded to crisis proportions. While many police agencies and communities hope tougher laws and stricter enforcement will overcome the gang problem, other such organizations have decided to focus on providing recreation as a means to conquering gangs. Through strong-arm tactics often produce some positive and quick results, recreation and other methods appear to be the long term solution.

The International Diffusion Of The Mormon Church, Samuel Otterstrom Jan 1994

The International Diffusion Of The Mormon Church, Samuel Otterstrom

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis outlines the international diffusion and growth of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, or Mormon Church. A model of Mormon spatial diffusion in foreign countries is developed incorporating both a functional and spatial perspective. The functional perspective includes supply and demand variables which influence the rate of growth of the Mormon Church in a country. The functional perspective is not fully explored in the thesis. The spatial perspective which the study concentrates on seeks to show a general spatial pattern related to the spread of the Church within countries.

The original diffusion of the Church to …
