Landau Free Energy Form At The F Point Of The Roverline3 Structure, Dorian M. Hatch, Daniel L. Decker Feb 1981

Landau Free Energy Form At The F Point Of The Roverline3 Structure, Dorian M. Hatch, Daniel L. Decker

Faculty Publications

A free energy form compatible with the F point of the trigonal D63d(Roverline3c) symmetry is constructed. It is a function of the order parameter, elastic strain, and the stress. The resulting free energy exhibits a close formalistic analogy to the stressed cubic perovskite structures and their associated multicriticality.

Measuring The Reading Level Of Lds Materials: A Supplement To The Dale Word List, Linda Stahle Jan 1981

Measuring The Reading Level Of Lds Materials: A Supplement To The Dale Word List, Linda Stahle

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to supplement the Dale word list with a list of terms that are familiar to most members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and thus increase the precision of the Dale-Chall readability formula when it is applied to LDS materials. The Dale word list consists of 3,000 words that are familiar to 80 percent of fourth graders. The procedure involved identifying non-Dale words that occur frequently in LDS church publications and testing them on LDS fourth graders in a three-alternative multiple-choice format.

Of the 850 words tested, 249 were identified correctly …

Medieval Studies In America And American Medievalism, Herwig Wolfram Jan 1981

Medieval Studies In America And American Medievalism, Herwig Wolfram

Quidditas

As far as one can tell, Ernst Robert Curtius appears to have been the first Central European so fascinated by American interest in the Middle Ages that he promised a study on the subject. He called this particular interplay oof academic, amateur, and popular interest "American Medievalism." According to his bibliography, the projected work never appeared, but a lecture he was asked to present to an American audience in 1949 was published in both the North American and Hispano-American editions of his famous book European Literature and the Latin Middle Ages.

Model For Coal-Fired Reactors, Philip J. Smith, Thomas H. Fletcher, L. Douglas Smoot Jan 1981

Model For Coal-Fired Reactors, Philip J. Smith, Thomas H. Fletcher, L. Douglas Smoot

Faculty Publications

An axisymmetric, elliptic model has been developed for analysis of confined, turbulent coal-laden diffusion flames. The scheme is Eulerian for gases and Lagrangian for particles. The approach emphasizes the turbulent fluid mechanics of the mixing-limited gas phase reaction processes. The two-equation (k-─ e) turbulence model is used for closure. Particle drag and turbulent particle diffusion are also modeled. Gaseous combustion is modeled with a probability density function for the mixture fraction. Fluctuations in mixing of inlet streams and coal off-gas are considered. Coal pyrolysis and oxidation reaction processes are assumed to be slow with respect to the turbulent time scale. …

Flood Frequency And The Assemblage Of Dispersal Types In Hanging Gardens Of The Narrows, Zion National Park, Utah, George P. Malanson, Jeanne Kay Dec 1980

Flood Frequency And The Assemblage Of Dispersal Types In Hanging Gardens Of The Narrows, Zion National Park, Utah, George P. Malanson, Jeanne Kay

Great Basin Naturalist

Hanging gardens of the Narrows, Zion National Park, Utah, are plant communities growing at permanent seeps on the canyon walls. The gardens are isolated from each other and from other plant communities by vertical expanses of sandstone. Gardens consist mostly of herbaceous species less than 1 m tall. Though not individually species-rich, the hanging gardens are diverse as a group, and very dissimilar.

This study considers two explanations of the heterogeneous distribution of species in hanging gardens. The assemblages of dispersal types in gardens of different spatial attributes and disturbance frequencies are examined. The GH statistic, a log likelihood …

Frequency Distribution Of Numbers Of Perennial Shrubs In The Northern Mojave Desert, A. A. El-Ghonemy, A. Wallace, E. M. Romney Oct 1980

Frequency Distribution Of Numbers Of Perennial Shrubs In The Northern Mojave Desert, A. A. El-Ghonemy, A. Wallace, E. M. Romney

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

Frequency distribution according to plant size as measured by dimensional analysis on different mathematical bases were determined for 10 common perennial plant species from Rock Valley in the northern Mojave Desert in Nevada. A total of 4282 individual plants was measured. The data provide information concerning the stability and prosperity of the natural vegetation as judged by the relative proportions of individuals in the size-class spectrum, as well as show graphically the relative abundance of the different species in the study area.
On the species level, the populations were close to normally distributed on the loge basis, but with …

Socioecological And Soil-Plant Studies Of The Natural Vegetation In The Northern Mojave Desert-Great Basin Desert Interface, A. A. El-Ghonemy, A. Wallace, E. M. Romney Oct 1980

Socioecological And Soil-Plant Studies Of The Natural Vegetation In The Northern Mojave Desert-Great Basin Desert Interface, A. A. El-Ghonemy, A. Wallace, E. M. Romney

Great Basin Naturalist Memoirs

The purpose of this study is to further describe the distribution, habitats, and ecological characteristics of the natural vegetation in the northern sector of the northern Mojave Desert. Sixty-six stands were classified on the basis of shared leading dominant species. Each of these groupings is well defined and represents a sociologically distinct entity quite recognizable in the field. The relationships between each vegetational grouping and several environmental variables were statistically analyzed. Significant differences were found among plant groupings with respect to soil moisture tension, absolute and relative amounts of exchangeable Na, exchangeable K, cation exchange capacity, and elevation.
The analysis …

Printed Maps Of Utah To 1900: An Annotated Cartobibliography, Riley Moore Moffat Aug 1980

Printed Maps Of Utah To 1900: An Annotated Cartobibliography, Riley Moore Moffat

Theses and Dissertations

Old maps are valuable research tools in many fields. Finding and identifying them, however, is often difficult. This annotated cartobibliography attempts to identify all maps of Utah printed before 1900. Entries give the distinguishing features, peculiarities, inaccuracies, and a general description as well as the map's provenance and citations in other lists and bibliographies.

The maps are listed chronologically and include all maps located in research collections in Utah, and in the catalogs of the Library of Congress and the Bancroft Library. Although the first entry is dated 1777, the first map of Utah made from actual observation, earlier maps …

"But To Be Learned Is Good If . . .", E. Wayne Wright

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

On Friday April fourth the second semi-annual spring covention of AMCAP was held at the LDS Institute at the University of Utah. The theme was taken from 2 Nephi 9:28-29: "O that cunning plan of the evil one! O the vainness, and the frailties, and the foolishness of men! When they are learned they think they are wise, and they hearken not unto the counsel of God, for they set it aside, supposing they know of themselves, wherefore, their wisdom is foolishness and it profiteth them not. And they shall perish. But to be learned is good if they hearken …

Current State Of Affairs Of Japanese Language Information Processing And Its Practice At The University Of Tsukuba, Kazuhiko Nakayama, Akifumi Oikawa

Journal of East Asian Libraries

I. Introduction. The University of Tsukuba opened its doors in October 1973 as a university of tomorrow with (1) the introduction of a new framework for education and research, (2) a novel university management, and (3) an open university as its three distinguishing features. During the preparatory stages for founding the university, plans were made to establish a computer center and introduce a large-scale computer. At this early stage, research and development could be carried out to develop centralized operations control and efficient uses of the computer, as well as applications of the computer to education, research, and university administration. …

The Use Of Thierry Of Chartres' Hexameron By Anonymi De Elementis And Robert Grosseteste, Richard C. Dales

Quidditas

The twelfth century in the intellectual history of western Europe was a time of great creativity and freedom and a time during which the rate of acquisition of exotic material was at a maximum. In spite of this, however, the sources of much twelfth-century scientific writing and the use of twelfth-century authors by later writers is little known. Although the editor of a twelfth-century text can sometimes point to the specific source of his author, more often he must simply indicate similar passages in other works or indicate the ultimate source (e.g., Aristotle or Plotinus), which could not possibly have …

A man's life is shaped by decisions often not his own. Even before my conception it was decided what I was to be, and the date of my birth, too, was decisive.

The Marti School, 1947=1964, Fritz Marti

Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter

The Marti School was founded in 1947 in lower Salem, Ohio, first under the name of the Marti Farm Home School, and then the Berglihof School, for the benefit of the six Marti children. Dr. and Mrs. Marti felt they could not let the children waste half of their youth in the necessarily slow moving rural school of the neighborhood.

Economic Issues Of Groundwater Management, B. Gardner Delworth Sep 1979

Economic Issues Of Groundwater Management, B. Gardner Delworth

Faculty Publications

This is a coaceptual rather than an empirical paper with the primary focus on raising a set of economic issues faced by any authority charged with managing a groundwater aquifer. I will utilize the technique of making simplifying, albeit unrealistic, assumptions in order to establish easily and clearly the relevant economic principles. Some of the assumptions will be relaxed later to achieve greater realism. It is assumed that the hydrologic dimensions of the groundwater system are known and that the management authority has the power to enforce whatever rules it deems appropriate. There are a host of problems associated with …

Heating-Effect Minimization In Dye Lasers, Kenneth Lee Matheson, James M. Thorne Aug 1979

Heating-Effect Minimization In Dye Lasers, Kenneth Lee Matheson, James M. Thorne

Faculty Publications

Optical pumping of dye lasers deposits heat nonuniformly in the active medium. Because the refractive index of a liquid or gas is a function of temperature, gradients are created which refract the laser beam. This effect is sometimes serious enough to quench laser action. In this paper, we evaluate the effects caused by optical pumping with a coaxial flashlamp and suggest ultraviolet absorbers and wavelength shifters as materials for minimizing the problem
