A Study Of Sensitive Lands In Provo, Doris R. Monson Jan 1983

A Study Of Sensitive Lands In Provo, Doris R. Monson

Theses and Dissertations

Sensitive lands are being developed in great quantity. Because of problems caused by the development of sensitive lands, Provo City has developed land use ordinances. This thesis examines the development of Provo's ordinances along with the development of its sensitive lands. It determines ways that the city can strengthen their land use ordinances and avoid some of the problems found in sensitive land development.

Select Functions Of Price, Supply, And Demand In Market And State Economies. Study Ii, Gilbert Almquist Jan 1983

Select Functions Of Price, Supply, And Demand In Market And State Economies. Study Ii, Gilbert Almquist

Sigma: Journal of Political and International Studies

More than any other market aspect, price has the most direct linkage to supply and demand. Suppliers make product decisions according to production costs. Consumers decide their purchases after considering prices. Most prices are not set arbitrarily. Many factors must be analyzed before proper prices are applied. For this reason, the market manager must consider pricing strategies, evaluate applicable factors, set the price, predict its effect on the market, then observe the outcomes. Sometimes the outcomes are not in accord with the predictions. Prices and their effect on market supply and demand are not absolute. There are varying aspects in …

The Raccoon, Procyon Iotor, In Wyoming, E. Blake Hart

Great Basin Naturalist

Recent distribution maps show raccoon as occupying only the extreme eastern-northeastern portion of Wyoming. However, there is substantial evidence that raccoon are common throughout Wyoming and currently inhabit all the major and many of the minor drainages throughout Wyoming.

Intercanine Crown Distances In Red Foxes And Badgers, E. Blake Hart Dec 1982

Intercanine Crown Distances In Red Foxes And Badgers, E. Blake Hart

Great Basin Naturalist

Intercanine crown distances of 605 wild South Dakota red foxes and 249 badgers of unknown age were measured; adults and juveniles were diagnosed by radiographs of canine teeth. In foxes, T-tests between similar age, between similar sex, and between combined age groups were significant at .01. In badgers, significance was found only between adult males and juvenile males and between adult males and adult females at .05.

A Mathematical Contraction And Automated Analysis Of Internal Controls, Andrew D. Bailey Jr, Gordon Leon Duke, James Gerlach, Chen-En Ko, Rayman D. Meservy, Andrew B. Whinton

Faculty Publications

This paper presents a precedent oriented computer assisted method of designing, analyzing and evaluating systems of internal controls. The ..!..nternal Control _!iodel, TICOM III, is fundamentally a design and analysis tool useful in the context of Automated Office Information Systems (AOIS's). Traditional analysis and evaluation tools, such as flowcharting, written narratives and questionnaires, are inefficient, if not insufficient, to support the design and control analysis of these new systems. The advantages of TICOM III over traditional methods such as narrative description, questionnaires and flowcharts are: (1) the evaluation can be more rigorous and exhaustive because of the speed, accuracy and …

Private Documents And Papers As Sources For Research On Chinese Economy And Society During The Ch'ing Period-- A Report On The Materials Collected In Taiwan, Michael H. Finegan Jun 1982

Private Documents And Papers As Sources For Research On Chinese Economy And Society During The Ch'ing Period-- A Report On The Materials Collected In Taiwan, Michael H. Finegan

Journal of East Asian Libraries

Those interested in studying the society and economy of premodern China on the local level may have difficulty in finding suitable source materials. The information in standard published sources is often not detailed or precise enough to answer all important questions about the livelihood and social relationships of ordinary people. Three types of sources which may help to answer such questions and which may be found in Taiwan today are private documents and papers, popular editions of books from the Ch'ing period, and local government archives. Although discussion here will concentrate on introducing the private papers to be found in …

High-Temperature Battery Calorimeter, L. D. Hansen, R. H. Hart, D. M. Chen, H. F. Gibbard Apr 1982

High-Temperature Battery Calorimeter, L. D. Hansen, R. H. Hart, D. M. Chen, H. F. Gibbard

Faculty Publications

A battery calorimeter was built for the measurement of thermal energy generation of high-temperature lithium–aluminum/iron sulfide battery cells, which are under development for electric vehicle propulsion and other energy storage applications. The calorimeter was designed with a temperature range of 400˚–500˚C, a detection limit of 1 mW, and an upper limit of heat flow of 50 W. The results of measurements on 200-Ah LiAl/FeS cells were in excellent agreement with the predictions of thermodynamic calculations based on precise measurements of the total cell polarization and the temperature coefficient of the emf. Details of the construction and operation principles of this …

Structure Of Alpine Plant Communities Near King's Peak, Uinta Mountains, Utah, George M. Briggs, James A. Macmahon Mar 1982

Structure Of Alpine Plant Communities Near King's Peak, Uinta Mountains, Utah, George M. Briggs, James A. Macmahon

Great Basin Naturalist

A study was made at 18 sites with elevations between 3512 and 3768 m in the Uinta Mountains, Utah. Sites were small in extent but typified vegetation patterns found in the Uintas. Standing crop, species composition (based on dry weight), and values for several physical parameters were determined at each site. Simple linear regressions performed between the various biotic and abiotic characters revealed significant relationships between the characteristics of rocks visible at the surface (the number, size, and variation in size) and vegetation cover. This relationship was probably due to the burial of rocks as a region became vegetated. Bray …

Acquisition Of The Mitsui Collection By The East Asiatic Library, University Of California, Berkeley, Roger Sherman

Journal of East Asian Libraries

Not long after World War II came to a close, there was a burgeoning of interest in area studies, which prompted many academic libraries in the United States to embark on extensive acquisitions programs to obtain foreign books for their universities. At the Berkeley campus of the University of California, it was recognized that there was a need on the West Coast for a strong collection of East Asian research materials. This led to the establishment of the East Asiatic Library (EAL) in 1947 as a separate branch on campus. The first few years at the Library were a period …

A Hidden-Line Algorithm For Hyperspace, Robert P. Burton, David R. Smith Feb 1982

A Hidden-Line Algorithm For Hyperspace, Robert P. Burton, David R. Smith

Faculty Publications

An object-space hidden-line algorithm for higher-dimensional scenes has been designed and implemented. Scenes consist of convex hulls of any dimension, each of which is compared against the edges of all convex hulls not eliminated by a hyperdimensional clipper, a depth test after sorting and a minimax text. Hidden and visible elements are determined in accordance with the dimensionality of the selected viewing hyperspace. When shape alone is the attribute of interest, hidden-line elimination need be performed only in that hyperspace. The algorithm is of value in the production of shadows of hyperdimensional models, including but not limited to four-dimensional space-time …

The Bridge

"I am as water," Hans Christian Andersen wrote in a letter of 1855. "Everything moves me. Everything is reflected in me. I suppose it is part of my writer's nature, and often I have had pleasure and blessing from it, but it is often also a torment."

Four Utah Mormon Artists As Authors, Roxie Dale Trimble Jan 1982

Four Utah Mormon Artists As Authors, Roxie Dale Trimble

Theses and Dissertations

In researching the literary and visual art forms of four Utah Mormon artists/authors, considerable evidence supports the prognosis that natural parallels do exist between the written and visual works of artists/authors. Recent as well as past historical data also confirms this hypothesis.

To implement research personal interviews and written questionnaires were submitted. The resultant data compiled supports the prognosis that this parallelism does exist.

Antonio Possevino, S.J. As A Counter-Reformation Critic Of The Arts, John Patrick Donnelly S.J. Jan 1982

Antonio Possevino, S.J. As A Counter-Reformation Critic Of The Arts, John Patrick Donnelly S.J.

Quidditas

The Protestant Reformation called into question many traditions and practices of the Church, including the traditional relation of art to religion. Many Protestant theologians, for instance Calvin and especially Zwingli, condemned religious statues and art as idolatrous or superstitious, partly on the basis of Old Testament prohibitions. Luther and Lutherans approved of religious paintings but rejected the cult of the saints that had figured so largely in medieval and Renaissance religious art. In the Lutheran tradition religious art was more closely tied to the Bible, another manifestation fo the sola scriptura principle. In Catholic circles as well there arose lively …

The Role Of Economic Analysis In Public Range Management, B. Delworth Gardner Jan 1982

The Role Of Economic Analysis In Public Range Management, B. Delworth Gardner

Faculty Publications

Economic analysis has a vital, if not indispensable, role to play in the management decisions of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM} if the national welfare is to be served effectively. This rather sweeping conclusion is justified by the nature of the management problems faced by the BLM and by the unique view of the world provided by the field of economics.

Joseph Smith's Eternalism. Foundations For A System Of Psychotherapy, Robert L. Millet, Charles H. Madsen Jr.

Issues in Religion and Psychotherapy

At the October, 1980 AMCAP covention the authors raised some questions about the Gospel and psychotherapy (see the April, 1981 issue of the Journal, pages 11-14). In this paper, which is based on a presentation made at the October, 1981 convention, they offer some possible answers.

Grazing Impacts On Sagebrush Communities Of Central Utah, Jack D. Brotherson, W. Todd Brotherson Sep 1981

Grazing Impacts On Sagebrush Communities Of Central Utah, Jack D. Brotherson, W. Todd Brotherson

Great Basin Naturalist

Twenty-three study sites were established in the sagebrush communities bordering Utah Lake. Relic (ungrazed) and grazed stands were represented in the sample. Differences in species composition, vegetation, and soil characteristics were assessed. Major differences in species composition and vegetative characteristics were due to the influence of grazing. Major changes were loss of native perennial grass cover, and increases in cover from introduced annual species. Differences in the soil characteristics were due to habitat rather than grazing influences.
