Multiscale And Multicriterial Hydrological Validation Of The Eco-Hydrological Model Swim, Fred Hattermann, Valentina Krysanova, Frank Wechsung, M. Wattenbach
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The hydrological validation described in this paper follows a bottom-up approach, when at first 12 mesoscale subbasins, covering the main subregions of the basin, are validated, and then the information gained from the mesoscale is used to validate the hydrological processes of the whole basin. Special attention was paid to the use of spatial information (maps of water table depth) in addition to usual point data (water discharge at gauge stations) to validate the model. While the primary purpose of distributed hydrological models is to reproduce both water fluxes in subbasins and hydrotopes along with river discharge, they are often …

The Heron Wood Reserve in Peeblesshire, Scotland is a 7.5-hectare wood, left untended tofacilitate investigation into a natural Scottish Forest Ecosystem. Data on fungal fruiting have been collectedsince 1994, and since November 2000 physico-chemical and biotic experiments on soil and forest litter havealso been conducted with the aim to construct and integrate a number of simulation sub-models of the variousecological systems present in an untended Scottish woodland. Important systems for modelling includepatterns of fungal succession, habitat characteristics and fungal biochemical patterns. For example, Glomalin,a protein secreted by arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, is believed to bind soil particles together in stablestructures called …

Environmental Modelling In Urban Areas With Gis, L. Matejicek, L. Benesova, J. Tonika
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
More accurate spatio-temporal predictions of urban environment are needed as a basis forassessing exposures as a part of environmental studies, and to inform urban protection policy andmanagement. This paper is focused on modelling in the GIS to estimate air, water and soil pollution in urbanareas. The basic environmental components are complemented by bio-monitoring, waste management andnoise exposure. The models, which use data from long-time monitoring, are developed using correlation, regression and factor analysis; simulation of dynamic relation and spatio-temporal phenomena. Integration ofa wide range of relatively independent factors enables more complex analysis of environment in urban areas.GIS, which can integrate a …
Trees, Dendrograms And Sensitivity, R. D. Braddock
Trees, Dendrograms And Sensitivity, R. D. Braddock
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Dendrograms and minimum-weight spanning trees (MWST) are discrete structures which arise inclustering theory, networks, and where strategic choices are made between discrete options. The discrete structureof the solution tree varies discontinuously with respect to changes in the dissimilarity or cost matrix. Tarjan[1982] has obtained bounds on the changes to the elements of the cost matrix, where the structure is not altered. These results are extended to describe the sensitivity of the tree structure with respect to changes in the costmatrix. The sensitivity of the structure to the addition of a node and arcs is solved using potential loops in thetree. This …

A Spatially Explicit Modelling Approach To Socioeconomic Development In South Africa, L. Erasmus, A. S. Van Jaarsveld, P. O. Bommel
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
South Africa finds itself at a development cross road: optimism for "high road" development is bisected by a wasteland of poverty and overpopulation. Intervention policies are largely "faith-based", even in the face of rising uncertainties surrounding population growth, HIV/Aids and resource availability. Added to this are the complexities of disparate spatial development and social scenarios, mass urbanization and immigration. In order to confront these threats, decision makers need analytical tools that can be used to explore potential intervention policies for their efficacy, desirability and inadvertent consequences in nontarget sectors. Such tools should adequately address uneven spatial development across environmental, economic …
Data Assimilation And Uncertainty Analysis Of Environmental Assessment Problems, Renata J. Romanowicz, Peter C. Young
Data Assimilation And Uncertainty Analysis Of Environmental Assessment Problems, Renata J. Romanowicz, Peter C. Young
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Stochastic Transfer Function (STF) and Generalised Likelihood Uncertainty Estimation (GLUE) techniques are outlined and applied to an environmental problem concerned with marine pollution dose assessment. The methods are used to estimate the amount and associated probability distributions of radionuclides transferred to marine biota from a given source: the British Nuclear Fuel Ltd (BNFL) repository plant in Sellafield, U.K. The complexity of the processes involved, together with the large dispersion and scarcity of observations regarding radionuclide concentrations in the marine environment, require efficient data assimilation techniques. In this regard, the basic STF methodology searches for identifiable, linear, Gaussian model structures that …
Integrated Systems Analysis And Sustainable Development, Tad Soroczynski
Integrated Systems Analysis And Sustainable Development, Tad Soroczynski
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The paper presents integrated systems analysis (ISA) as a "tool" for modelling and for thedevelopment of decision support systems (DSS). ISA enhances understanding of the complex relationshipsbetween different disciplines in the form of inputs fi transformations fi outputs and also facilitates anunderstanding of the term sustainable development. Further, the paper presents a definition and model of ISAand discusses performance of component systems or distribution patterns in relation to a time horizon. Somecomponent systems create constraints and impact other component systems which over time undergotransformations such as self-organisation and self-regulation. Some component systems may adopt a distributionpattern as an output. Therefore, …

Multi-Criteria Decision Support System And Data Warehouse For Designing And Monitoring Sustainable Industrial Strategies An Italian Case Study, C. Di Mauro, J. P. Nordvik, A. C. Lucia
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Decision-making processes for managing and defining policies related to social and environmental impacts from industry are becoming more and more complex. Raising public concerns on environmental issues requires public authorities to collect more accurate information related to impacts of industry. Overlaps between environmental, social and political interests, and rapid speed of change contribute even further to the complexity. Unfortunately, this multifaceted information is spread throughout multiple repositories. Thus, there is a need to integrate the available information within a structured network and to design a decision support system suitable for helping decision makers to define sustainable policies. This paper reports …

The Emission Inventory System For Upper Austria: The Role Of Environmental Information Systems In Translating Complex Information To A User S Requirements, Wilfried Winiwarter, Gerald Schimak
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Advances in environmental sciences increase the difficulty in creating products that can be readily used by non-experts. In this paper we demonstrate how a carefully designed environmental system is able to provide solutions. While complex transformations are kept in the system background, predefined expert choices give a user great flexibility in selecting what is required for the specific applications. In the given case study, emissions of atmospheric pollutants in the province of Upper Austria can not only be calculated for a multitude of options, but a scenario tool also allows for deep modifications of the models, if required. The example …

New Method Of Environmental Assessment Based On The Methods Of Self-Organization Of Mathematical Models., A. N. Timoshevski, V. Yeremin, S. A. Kalkuta
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The method of generation of mathematical models of the observations defined on an irregular grid of observation data has been proposed. The method is based on self-organization of mathematical models and allows for the reconstruction and forecast (on a regular grid) of the observations fields of a different origin with controlling accuracy. This method could be used to any data field that is presented as a set of values in some region. A space distribution of geophysical (geochemical) parameters in a real geographic region could be considered as the data field of interest. In this study, the method has been …

Multi-Model Integration In Decision Support System: A Technical User Interface Approach For Watershed And Lake Management Scenarios, David Lam, Luis F. León, Stuart Hamilton, Norm Crookshank, Derek Bonin, David Swayne
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Computer simulations using mathematical models provide useful tools to investigate different scenarios based on watershed management strategies and environmental conditions. To study the impact of these strategies and conditions, different models must be linked or coupled following hydrological pathways in air, soil and water. To connect one model to another successfully, we need to resolve a number of computational issues such as the compatibility of software tools and the consistency of the temporal and spatial scales and model assumptions used. To keep track of these issues and to provide efficient algorithms to resolve them, we propose to use a technical …

Modeling And Analysis Of Biofilms Formation And Evolution In Wastewater Treatment Processes Using Multi-Agent Systems, Laurent Lardon, Jean-Philippe Steyer, Nicolas Bernet, Christophe Le Page
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Biofilms are complex but omnipresent and industrially important structures. Many studies were devoted to build mathematical models for biofilm analysis but most of them were based on classical continuous approaches. On the other side, only very few studies were directly based on the functional mechanisms to obtain virtual systems which mimic the descriptive observations and allow to predict the state of a biofilm and its possible evolution. This paper will present a non-classical approach based on multi-agent systems for the analysis of biofilm formation. This model shows the spatial repartition of biomass within the biofilm and the impact of the …
Selopt: Selection Of Options Based On The Balance And Ranking Method, G. Strassert
Selopt: Selection Of Options Based On The Balance And Ranking Method, G. Strassert
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
A new multiple criteria decision-making (MCDM) method, called the Balancing and RankingMethod, is presented. The method overcomes some of the deficiencies of other MCDM methods, such assubjective evaluation of criteria weights, scoring of options, statistical estimation of weights andspecification of the utility function for criteria. The new method uses a three-step procedure to derive anoverall complete final order of options. First, an outranking matrix is derived, which indicates the frequencywith which one option is superior to all other options based on each criterion. Second, the outranking matrixis triangularized to obtain an implicit pre-ordering or provisional order of options. Third, the …

Data-Based Mechanistic Modelling Of Rainfall-Runoff Processes And Its Application In A Complex Hydrological Context, K. Bogner, B. Hingray, A. Musy
Data-Based Mechanistic Modelling Of Rainfall-Runoff Processes And Its Application In A Complex Hydrological Context, K. Bogner, B. Hingray, A. Musy
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Although the inherent uncertainty associated with rainfall-runoff processes is well known, mostmathematical models of such systems are completely deterministic in nature. Stochastic modelling requiresthat the uncertainty, which is associated with both the model parameters and the stochastic inputs, shouldbe quantified in some manner as an inherent part of the modelling analysis. To achieve these objectives, aData-based mechanistic (DBM) modelling approach will be tested for the Jura lake system (Switzerland). InDBM modelling, the most parsimonious model structure is first inferred statistically from the available timeseries. State dependent non-linear dependencies can be identified objectively from the rainfall and runoff dataand will be …
Single-Objective Vs. Multiobjective Optimisation For Integrated Decision Support, Dragan Savic
Single-Objective Vs. Multiobjective Optimisation For Integrated Decision Support, Dragan Savic
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
In many optimisation problems, analysts are often confronted with multiobjective decision problems. The most common purpose of an analysis is to choose the best trade-offs among all the defined and conflicting objectives. However, many optimisation studies are formulated as a problem whose goal is to find the “best” solution, which corresponds to the minimum or maximum value of a single objective function that lumps all different objectives into one. Water distribution system design is a multiobjective problem for which it is difficult to identify the true benefits and constraints due primarily to the uncertainty in future demands. This paper shows …
Modelling Of The Collective Decision Making Process For Compact Manufacture Organisation, D. N. Svirsky
Modelling Of The Collective Decision Making Process For Compact Manufacture Organisation, D. N. Svirsky
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
This paper addresses the organisation and management of compact (i.e. unsuperfluous resources) systems. The definition of compact manufacturing system (CMS) as well as the basic principles and general algorithms of its design are given. It is shown that the difficult task of designing of a system is effectively solved by a "collective intelligence" system using concurrent engineering. The author offers to use the tensor analogy for collective intelligence system development. Thus, production (its mathematical model) is a semantic invariant of a manufacturing sector of its life cycle. The production information description is mapped into the systems of co-ordinates appropriate to …

Environmental Damage Assessment Applied To Process Analysis. A Decision Support Alternative, I. Herrera, L. Kulay, Laureano Jiménez, Marta Schuhmacher
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Nowadays the environmental studies are increasingly important in the process analysis and design. These studies not only can be used to quantify the environmental damage, but also, as optimisation criteria together with technical and economical evaluations. In the present study, we develop a methodology based on several techniques (Risk Assessment (RA), Design Support Framework (DSF), and Endpoints Indicators Applying). This methodology which links the main aspects of process analysis and environmental damage assessment, comprehends three main steps: the first one involves the accomplishment of an inventory of raw material and energetic streams, which may be predicted or computed depending on …

Structures And Performances Of Five Rainfall-Runoff Models For Continuous River-Flow Simulation, M. Goswami, K. M. O’Connor, A. Y. Shamseldin
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Four black-box-type rainfall-runoff models, namely, the Simple Linear Model, the seasonallybasedLinear Perturbation Model, the wetness-index-based Linearly Varying Gain Factor Model, and theArtificial Neural Network Model, along with the conceptual Soil Moisture Accounting and Routing Model, were used for this study. The models exhibit a considerable range of variation in degree of structuralcomplexity and associated parameter parsimony, with corresponding degrees of complication in objectivefunction evaluation. Hence they represent a family of models suitable for application in both developed anddeveloping countries. Operating in continuous river-flow simulation mode, these models and techniqueswere applied to six test catchments representing wide variability in geographic location, climatic …

Parallel Processing For A Better Understanding Of Equifinality In Hydrological Models, A. Hreiche, D. Mezher, C. Bocquillona, A. Dezetter, E. Servat, W. Najem
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The aim of conceptual modeling of watersheds is to realize a numeric scheme for determining rainfallrunoff at the outlet of a basin. This modeling consists of a number of parameters that are identified by calibration methods using a series of measured rainfall-runoff data. One of the difficulties of this method is due to equifinality problems. The definition of the parameters, and their relation with the data, extends the space of acceptable parameters (zone of equivalence), which in turn makes the combination of acceptable parameters very large. In addition, the calibration methods currently used simplify the parameter hyper-space and yield equally …

An Innovative Modelling Concept For Integrated Water Resources Management Linking Hydrological Functioning And Socio-Economic Behaviour - The Hérault Catchment Case Study, South Of France, F. Giraud, S. Lanini, J. D. Rinaudo, V. Petit, N. Courtois
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
This paper presents a conceptual modelling framework for integrated water resourcesmanagement at the scale of the river basin. A simulator was developed using Matlab/Simulink software toensure the numerical formulation of the conceptual model. The simulator is problem-solving orientedallowing to investigate the responses of the hydrosystem according to various scenarios defined by thestakeholders of the basin. The simulator is mid-way between full-determinist models which are data- andtime-consuming, although more accurate in terms of quantitative outputs, and full-lumped models which aretoo simplistic to account for hydrogeological heterogeneity and realistic impacts of economic developmentscenarios, although easy to implement and time-saving. After having described …

Cell Interaction In Semi-Markov Forest Landscape Models, M. G. Monticino, T. Cogdill, M. F. Acevedo
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
This paper describes a model for incorporating both spatial interactions and succession dynamicswithin a MOSAIC forest landscape model. MOSAIC uses semi-Markov processes to model the successiondynamics of a forest landscape. A landscape is partitioned into cells and the parameters defining the semi-Markov process associated with each cell are derived from individual tree-based models that run in gap-sizedplots within the cell. Parameters vary from cell to cell based on the environmental and terrain conditions ofthe cells. Ecologically, cells and plots influence their neighbors’ development through processes such as seeddispersal and disease transmission. Neighborhood interactions are modeled through influence arrays that areflexible …
An Application Of Queuing Theory To Waterfowl Migration, Richard S. Sojda, John E. Cornely, Leigh H. Fredrickson
An Application Of Queuing Theory To Waterfowl Migration, Richard S. Sojda, John E. Cornely, Leigh H. Fredrickson
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
There has always been great interest in the migration of waterfowl and other birds. We have applied queuing theory to modelling waterfowl migration, beginning with a prototype system for the Rocky Mountain Population of trumpeter swans (Cygnus buccinator) in Western North America. The queuing model can be classified as a D/BB/28 system, and we describe the input sources, service mechanism, and network configuration of queues and servers. The intrinsic nature of queuing theory is to represent the spatial and temporal characteristics of entities and how they move, are placed in queues, and are serviced. The service mechanism in our system …

Estimation Of High Floods By Three Rainfall-Runoff Models With Short Rainfall-Runoff Series (Alzette River Basin, Luxembourg), A. El Idrissi, G. Drogue, L. Pfister, J. F Iffly, L. Hoffmann, B. Hingray, F. Guex
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
This paper presents a comparison of hourly high runoff simulations using short discharge series for three parsimonious rainfall-runoff models that differ substantially in their conceptualisation (two reservoir models and one physically-based model). The models were applied to eight monitored sub-basins characterised by different physiographical properties and hydrological behaviour, located in the experimental Alzette river basin (Luxembourg). The model calibration procedure consists in selecting only rainfall-runoff events with highest peak flows and highest runoff production that occurred during the available measurement period (1997-2001). Simulated extreme values of peak flow and stormflow volumes were analysed and compared to observed runoff series. Results …

Comparing Basal Area Growth Models, Consistency Of Parameters, And Accuracy Of Prediction, J. J. Colbert, Michael Schuckers, Desta Fekedulegn
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
We fit alternative sigmoid growth models to sample tree basal area historical data derived fromincrement cores and disks taken at breast height. We examine and compare the estimated parameters forthese models across a range of sample sites. Models are rated on consistency of parameters and on theirability to fit growth data from four sites that are located across a longitudinal gradient across the states ofDelaware, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, and Ohio in the USA. We then examine the differences among thesemodels in their abilities to predict short-term (decade) and longer-term growth of trees. Accuracy andpotential effects of bias are discussed relative …

Plant Disease Models. Critical Issues In Development And Use, A. Susi, A. Perini, E. Olivetti
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Models which simulate the evolution of a plant disease during the season give important informationto assess the seriousness of the situation. This activity precedes the choice of an appropriate action to be implementedfor reducing the economical damage. Having effective models is a critical issue in modern agriculture, especially in Integrated Protection and Organic Farming, which rest on a set of plant disease managementpractices with low environmental impact.Considerable effort has gone in the study of models for the simulation of plant diseases evolution. Phenologymodels, population and epidemiological models have been developed for several, diffused diseases. Problemsare still open, especially when the aim …
Uncertainty In Model Predictions: Does It Preclude Effective Decision Support?, Peter Reichert, M. E. Borsuk
Uncertainty In Model Predictions: Does It Preclude Effective Decision Support?, Peter Reichert, M. E. Borsuk
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The uncertainty in the predictions of models for the development of environmental systems is usually very large. In many cases the width of predictive probability distributions for variables of interest is significantly larger than the difference between the expected values of the results for different policy alternatives. This seems to lead to a serious problem for model-based decision support, as policy actions appear to have an “insignificant” effect on decision variables relative to the predictive uncertainty. However, in some cases it is evident that some of the alternatives at least lead to changes with the desired trend. A formal analysis …
Graphic Model-Based Software For Supporting The Search For Efficient Environmental Strategies: Method, Real-Life Applications And Future Developments, Alexander V. Lotov
Graphic Model-Based Software For Supporting The Search For Efficient Environmental Strategies: Method, Real-Life Applications And Future Developments, Alexander V. Lotov
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Application of a new graphic multi-criterion model-based approach to integrated assessment and screening of environmental strategies is described. The approach is based on integration of mathematical models and visualization of the Pareto-efficient (non-dominated) frontier. In the case of linear integrated models, the visualization is based on application of the Interactive Decision Maps (IDM) technique that visualizes the frontier in the form of multiple animated decision maps provided on-line. Interactive visualization of the Pareto-efficient frontier helps the user to understand potentialities of choice and criterion tradeoffs for 3 to 7 criteria. Moreover, the IDM technique supports identification of a preferred non-dominated …

Multi Criteria Evaluation Of Low Carbon Energy Technologies, S. Mandera, C. Gough
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Achieving a low carbon energy supply in a future society driven by the impacts of climate change will require huge technological changes. This paper compares the methodological implications of assessing two very different technological solutions – renewable energy and geological carbon sequestration. The UK has high renewable resources, in particular the highest wind resource in Europe. In contrast, atmospheric emissions from fossil fuels could be avoided by storing carbon dioxide in underground geological formations for which the UK has a huge potential capacity. These two technological approaches will have diverse and wide ranging impacts; both inspire views amongst stakeholders that …
