Vertical Electrical Impedance Measurements On Concrete Bridge Decks Using A Large-Area Electrode, Jeffrey David Barton Aug 2018

Vertical Electrical Impedance Measurements On Concrete Bridge Decks Using A Large-Area Electrode, Jeffrey David Barton

Theses and Dissertations

In regions where chloride-based deicing salts are applied to bridge decks, corrosion of the interior steel reinforcement is a major problem. Vertical electrical impedance (VEI) is an effective measurement technique to quantitatively assess the cover protection on bridges against aggressive chemical penetration of reinforced concrete. In its current form, traditional vertical electrical impedance is time-consuming and destructive because a direct connection to the reinforcing steel is required to provide a ground reference. A new method using a large-area electrode (LAE) permits VEI measurement without a direct electrical connection to the steel reinforcement. The LAE creates a nondestructive, semi-direct, low impedance …

Implementation And Optimization Of Time Reversal For Use In Nondestructive Evaluation Of Stress Corrosion Cracking, Sarah Marie Young

Theses and Dissertations

The time reversal (TR) process manipulates a system's impulse response in order to focus a peak of acoustic energy at a specific location in space and time. This technique has been implemented in both fluid and solid media for purposes ranging from communications to source localization. This thesis will examine both the implementation and processing of TR for nondestructive evaluation in steel, specializing in nonlinear detection methods. A series of steel samples are inspected for stress corrosion cracking (SCC) using TR focusing to excite nonlinearities inherent in cracks. It is determined that SCC exists in the expected regions of the …

Synthesis And Determination Of The Local Structure And Phase Evolution Of Unique Boehmite-Derived Mesoporous Doped Aluminas, Ying Zhang

Theses and Dissertations

Mesoporous alumina (Al2O3) in the gamma (γ) phase is widely used as a support in catalytic applications because of its high surface area, large pore volume, acid-base characteristics, and thermal stability. To improve the thermal stability of gamma alumina, dopants such as lanthanum, magnesium, zirconia, and silica are often introduced. Current laboratory-based methods for synthesizing gamma alumina generally involve 10-15 steps and/or use toxic, expensive surfactants and solvents. Industrial methods, while simpler, lack control of pore properties and surface chemistry. In contrast, we have developed an innovative solvent deficient, one-step method that is able to synthesize a wide range of …

A Graph Theoretical Analysis Of Functional Brain Networks Related To Memory And Healthy Aging, Ty Alvin Bodily

Theses and Dissertations

The cognitive decline associated with healthy aging begins in early adulthood and is important to understand as a precursor of and relative to mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer disease. Anatomical atrophy, functional compensation, and network reorganization have been observed in populations of older adults. In the current study, we examine functional network correlates of memory performance on the Wechsler Memory Scale IV and the Mnemonic Discrimination Task (MST). We report a lack of association between global graph theory metrics and age or memory performance. In addition, we observed a positive association between lure discrimination scores from the MST and right …

Methods And Metrics To Measure And Predict The Social Impact Of Engineered Products, Phillip Douglas Stevenson Aug 2018

Methods And Metrics To Measure And Predict The Social Impact Of Engineered Products, Phillip Douglas Stevenson

Theses and Dissertations

More than ever before, engineers are creating products for developing countries. One of the purposes of these products is to improve the consumer's quality of life. Currently, there is no established method of measuring the social impact of these types of products. As a result, engineers have used their own metrics to assess their product's impact, if at all. Some of the common metrics used include products sold and revenue, which measure the financial success of a product without recognizing the social successes or failures it might have. In this thesis I introduce a potential metric, the Product Impact Metric …

DYNAMIC control of radiative surface properties enables optimization of thermal management systems for spacecraft, radiative cooling systems, and other applications [1–3]. Various methods of altering the absorption or emission from a surface have been investigated [4–6]. Use of origami-inspired tessellated surfaces to control apparent radiative surface properties is a promising technology [7–9]. Realizing the full potential of tessellated surfaces to dynamically control apparent radiative surface properties requires convenient methods of calculating apparent properties as a function of tessellation geometry and intrinsic radiative surface properties. This Note focuses on the use of geometry to affect total, hemispherical properties of V grooves …

Time-Domain Characterization Of Nonlinear Propagation In Military Aircraft Jet Noise, Brent Owen Reichman Jul 2018

Time-Domain Characterization Of Nonlinear Propagation In Military Aircraft Jet Noise, Brent Owen Reichman

Theses and Dissertations

Nonlinear propagation and shock formation are shown in noise radiated from full-scale military jet aircraft. Perception of sound is not only affected by the overall sound pressure level of the noise, but also characteristics of the sound itself. In the case of jet noise, acoustic shocks within the waveforms result in a characteristic commonly referred to as"crackle." The origin of shocks in the far-field of jet noise is shown to be through nonlinear propagation. Metrics characterizing the shock content of a waveform are explained and given physical significance, then applied to jet noise at various distances and engine conditions to …

Methods For Creating Rigid Foldability In Origami-Inspired Deployable Mechanisms, Alden Daniel Yellowhorse Jul 2018

Methods For Creating Rigid Foldability In Origami-Inspired Deployable Mechanisms, Alden Daniel Yellowhorse

Theses and Dissertations

Because origami has proved to be a tremendously rich source of inspiration in engineering, interest in solving some of the challenges that affect origami-inspired design has been significant. One such challenge involves ensuring that origami-inspired mechanisms are rigid-foldable or capable of moving without requiring links to bend or distort. Because rigid-foldability is essential in mechanisms that are constructed using rigid materials, access to methods of engineering this characteristic are highly desirable. This research addresses this need by developing methods for the design of origami-inspired mechanisms that are rigid-foldable. Methods for modifying crease patterns to achieve this are described and compared. …

Measuring The Interaction And Cooperativity Between Ionic, Aromatic, And Nonpolar Amino Acids In Protein Structure, Mason Scott Smith Jul 2018

Measuring The Interaction And Cooperativity Between Ionic, Aromatic, And Nonpolar Amino Acids In Protein Structure, Mason Scott Smith

Theses and Dissertations

Protein folding studies have provided important insights about the key role of non-covalent interactions in protein structure and conformational stability. Some of these interactions include salt bridges, cation-π, and anion-Ï€ interactions. Understanding these interactions is crucial to developing methods for predicting protein secondary, tertiary, quaternary structure from primary sequence and understanding protein-protein interactions and protein-ligand interactions. Several studies have described how the interaction between two amino acid side chains have a substantial effect on protein structure and conformational stability. This is under the assumption that the interaction between the two amino acids is independent of surrounding interactions. We are interested …

Mirror Symmetry For K3 Surfaces With Non-Symplectic Automorphism, Christopher James Bott Jul 2018

Mirror Symmetry For K3 Surfaces With Non-Symplectic Automorphism, Christopher James Bott

Theses and Dissertations

Mirror symmetry is the phenomenon, originally discovered by physicists, that Calabi-Yau manifolds come in dual pairs, with each member of the pair producing the same physics. Mathematicians studying enumerative geometry became interested in mirror symmetry around 1990, and since then, mirror symmetry has become a major research topic in pure mathematics. One important problem in mirror symmetry is that there may be several ways to construct a mirror dual for a Calabi-Yau manifold. Hence it is a natural question to ask: when two different mirror symmetry constructions apply, do they agree? We specifically consider two mirror symmetry constructions for K3 surfaces …

Field Validation Of An Advanced Autonomous Method Of Exterior Dam Inspection Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Benjamin Joseph Barrett Jul 2018

Field Validation Of An Advanced Autonomous Method Of Exterior Dam Inspection Using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, Benjamin Joseph Barrett

Theses and Dissertations

The maintenance of infrastructure is critical to the well-being of society. This work focuses on a novel method for inspecting the exterior of dams using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) in an automated fashion. The UAVs are equipped with optical sensors capturing still images. The resulting images are used to generate three-dimensional (3D) models using Structure from Motion (SfM) computer software. The SfM models are then used to inspect the exterior of the dam. As typical dam inspections entail completing a checklist of inspection items with varied degrees of precision (e.g. a concrete spillway may be finely inspected for cracking or …

Theses and Dissertations

The primary objectives of this research are: (1) use a hierarchical structure to study electrode materials for next-generation lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) and (2) understand the fundamentals and utility of solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) with the addition of halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) for battery applications. Understanding the fundamental principles of electrode and electrolyte materials allows for the development of high-performance LIBs. The contributions of this dissertation are described below. Encapsulated Si-VACNT Electrodes. Two hurdles prevent Si-based electrodes from mass production. First, bulk Si undergoes volume expansion up to 300%. Second, a solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) forms between the interface of the electrolyte and …

Ion Friction At Small Values Of The Coulomb Logarithm, Robert Tucker Sprenkle Jul 2018

Ion Friction At Small Values Of The Coulomb Logarithm, Robert Tucker Sprenkle

Theses and Dissertations

We create a dual-species ultracold neutral plasma (UNP) by photo-ionizing Yb and Ca atoms in a dual-species magneto-optical trap. Unlike single-species UNP expansion, these plasmas are well outside of the collisionless (Vlasov) approximation. We observe the mutual interaction of the Yb and Ca ions by measuring the velocity distribution for each ion species separately. We model the expansion using a fluid code including ion-ion friction and compare with experimental results to obtain a value of the Coulomb logarithm of Λ= 0.04.

Tactile Sensing And Position Estimation Methods For Increased Proprioception Of Soft-Robotic Platforms, Nathan Mcclain Day Jul 2018

Tactile Sensing And Position Estimation Methods For Increased Proprioception Of Soft-Robotic Platforms, Nathan Mcclain Day

Theses and Dissertations

Soft robots have the potential to transform the way robots interact with their environment. This is due to their low inertia and inherent ability to more safely interact with the world without damaging themselves or the people around them. However, existing sensing for soft robots has at least partially limited their ability to control interactions with their environment. Tactile sensors could enable soft robots to sense interaction, but most tactile sensors are made from rigid substrates and are not well suited to applications for soft robots that can deform. In addition, the benefit of being able to cheaply manufacture soft …

Smart Technologies For Oil Production With Rod Pumping, Brigham Wheeler Hansen Jul 2018

Smart Technologies For Oil Production With Rod Pumping, Brigham Wheeler Hansen

Theses and Dissertations

This work enables accelerated fluid recovery in oil and gas reservoirs by automatically controlling fluid height and bottomhole pressure in wells. Several literature studies show significant increase in recovered oil by determining a target bottomhole pressure but rarely consider how to control to that value. This work enables those benefits by maintaining bottomhole pressure or fluid height. Moving Horizon Estimation (MHE) determines uncertain well parameters using only common surface measurements. A Model Predictive Controller (MPC) adjusts the stroking speed of a sucker rod pump to maintain fluid height. Pump boundary conditions are simulated with Mathematical Programs with Complementarity Constraints (MPCCs) …

Does The Scientist-Practitioner Gap Have Ontological Roots?, Eric Alexander Ghelfi Jul 2018

Does The Scientist-Practitioner Gap Have Ontological Roots?, Eric Alexander Ghelfi

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis, the nature and extent of practitioners' dissatisfaction with the psychotherapy research literature will first be described. A case will be made that a deeper analysis needs to be conducted to fully understand this dissatisfaction. Next, this dissatisfaction will be framed in the context of a particular ontology that seems to have largely contributed to it. Most importantly, several features of this ontology will be described and connected to practitioners' dissatisfaction. Finally, an alternative framework for understanding practitioners' dissatisfaction will be tentatively proposed, and it will be suggested that this alternative could help researchers and practitioners understand their …

Finding Torsion-Free Groups Which Do Not Have The Unique Product Property, Lindsay Jennae Soelberg Jul 2018

Finding Torsion-Free Groups Which Do Not Have The Unique Product Property, Lindsay Jennae Soelberg

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis discusses the Kaplansky zero divisor conjecture. The conjecture states that a group ring of a torsion-free group over a field has no nonzero zero divisors. There are situations for which this conjecture is known to hold, such as linearly orderable groups, unique product groups, solvable groups, and elementary amenable groups. This paper considers the possibility that the conjecture is false and there is some counterexample in existence. The approach to searching for such a counterexample discussed here is to first find a torsion-free group that has subsets A and B such that AB has no unique product. We …

An Algorithm For Symbolic Computing Of Singular Limits Of Dynamical Systems, Dane Jordan Bjork Jul 2018

An Algorithm For Symbolic Computing Of Singular Limits Of Dynamical Systems, Dane Jordan Bjork

Theses and Dissertations

The manifold boundary approximation method, MBAM is a new technique used in approximating systems of equations using parameter reduction. This method and other approximation methods are introduced and described. Several current issues in performing MBAM are discussed in further detail. These issues significantly slow down the process of MBAM and create a barrier of entry for those wishing to use the method without a strong background in mathematics. A solution is proposed to automatically reparameterize models and evaluate specific types of variables approaching limits -- significantly speeding up the process of MBAM. An implementation of the solution is discussed.

Adding Limit Points To Bass-Serre Graphs Of Groups, Alexander Jin Shumway Jul 2018

Adding Limit Points To Bass-Serre Graphs Of Groups, Alexander Jin Shumway

Theses and Dissertations

We give a brief overview of Bass-Serre theory and introduce a method of adding a limit point to graphs of groups. We explore a basic example of this method, and find that while the fundamental theorem of Bass-Serre theory no longer applies in this case we still recover a group action on a covering space of sorts with a subgroup isomorphic to the fundamental group of our new base space with added limit point. We also quantify how much larger the fundamental group of a graph of groups becomes after this construction, and discuss the effects of adding and identifying …
