Factor Structure Of The Jordan Performance Appraisal System: A Multilevel Multigroup Study Using Categorical And Count Data, Holly Lee Allen
Factor Structure Of The Jordan Performance Appraisal System: A Multilevel Multigroup Study Using Categorical And Count Data, Holly Lee Allen
Theses and Dissertations
Development of the Jordan Performance Appraisal System (JPAS) was completed in 1996. This study examined the factor structure of the classroom observation instrument used in the JPAS. Using observed classroom instructional quality ratings of 1220 elementary teachers of Grades 1-6 in the Jordan School District, this study estimated the factor structure of the data and the rater effect on relevant structural parameters. This study also tested for measurement invariance at the within and between levels across teachers of two grade-level groups (a) lower grades: Grades 1-3 and (b) upper grades: Grades 4-6. Factor structure was estimated using complex exploratory factor …
Galectin-1 Improves Sarcolemma Repair And Decreases The Inflammatory Response In Lgmd2b Models, Matthew F. Rathgeber
Galectin-1 Improves Sarcolemma Repair And Decreases The Inflammatory Response In Lgmd2b Models, Matthew F. Rathgeber
Theses and Dissertations
Limb-girdle muscular dystrophy type 2B (LGMD2B) is caused by mutations in the dysferlin gene, resulting in non-functional dysferlin, a key protein found in muscle membrane. Treatment options available for patients are chiefly palliative in nature and focus on maintaining ambulation. Our hypothesis is that galectin-1 (Gal-1), a soluble carbohydrate binding protein, increases membrane repair capacity, myogenic potential, M2 macrophage polarization and decreases NF-κB inflammation in dysferlin-deficient models. To test this hypothesis, we used recombinant human galectin-1 (rHsGal-1) to treat dysferlin-deficient models. We show that rHsGal-1 treatments of 48 h-72 h promotes myogenic maturation as indicated through improvements in size, myotube …
Eigenvalues Of Differential Operators And Nontrivial Zeros Of L-Functions, Dongsheng Wu
Eigenvalues Of Differential Operators And Nontrivial Zeros Of L-Functions, Dongsheng Wu
Theses and Dissertations
The Hilbert-P\'olya conjecture asserts that the non-trivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function $\zeta(s)$ correspond (in a certain canonical way) to the eigenvalues of some positive operator. R. Meyer constructed a differential operator $D_-$ acting on a function space $\H$ and showed that the eigenvalues of the adjoint of $D_-$ are exactly the nontrivial zeros of $\zeta(s)$ with multiplicity correspondence. We follow Meyer's construction with a slight modification. Specifically, we define two function spaces $\H_\cap$ and $\H_-$ on $(0,\infty)$ and characterize them via the Mellin transform. This allows us to show that $Z\H_\cap\subseteq\H_-$ where $Zf(x)=\sum_{n=1}^\infty f(nx)$. Also, the differential operator …
Varying The Aspect Ratio Of Toroidal Ion Traps: Implications For Design, Performance, And Miniaturization, Praneeth Madushan Hettikankanange
Varying The Aspect Ratio Of Toroidal Ion Traps: Implications For Design, Performance, And Miniaturization, Praneeth Madushan Hettikankanange
Theses and Dissertations
A large aspect ratio leads to higher ion capacity in miniaturized ion trap mass spectrometers. The aspect ratio (AR) of an ion trap represents the ratio between an extended trapping dimension and the characteristic trapping dimension. In contrast to linear and rectilinear traps, changing the AR of a toroidal ion trap (TorIT) results in changes to the degree of curvature and shape of the trapping potential, and hence, on performance as a mass analyzer. SIMION simulations show that higher-order terms in the trapping potential vary strongly for small and moderate AR values (below ~10), with the effects asymptotically flattening for …
Segment And Intersection Crash Analysis Methodologies For Utah Highways, Camille Cherie Lunt
Segment And Intersection Crash Analysis Methodologies For Utah Highways, Camille Cherie Lunt
Theses and Dissertations
This research focuses on the Crash Analysis Methodology for Segments (CAMS) which provides a way for engineers at the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) to prioritize safety improvements on state-owned roadways. Unlike the Utah crash analysis methodologies that come before it, the CAMS focuses exclusively on segment-related crashes. The benefits of such an analysis can be found in identifying locations that have safety concerns unbiased from intersections and their related crashes. The CAMS uses UDOT data to create a spreadsheet of roadway segments and their associated crashes. Each segment is homogeneous with respect to five variables: Annual Average Daily Traffic …
Building A Predictive Model For Stratigraphic Transitions And Lateral Facies Changes In The Cretaceous Almond Formation, Wyoming, Joseph E. Phillips
Building A Predictive Model For Stratigraphic Transitions And Lateral Facies Changes In The Cretaceous Almond Formation, Wyoming, Joseph E. Phillips
Theses and Dissertations
The Cretaceous Almond Formation, located in the Greater Green River Basin, records deposition of coastal plain fluvial sandstones and shallow marginal-marine sandstones in a net-transgressive sequence along the western margin of the Cretaceous Interior Seaway (CIS) from the late Campanian to early Maastrichtian. The Almond Formation is an important hydrocarbon reservoir, with development mainly along the Wamsutter Arch and the northeast margins of the Washakie Basin. Previous studies have primarily focused on outcrops along the eastern flank of the Rock Springs Uplift and subsurface data targeting the Wamsutter Arch. Further development of the Almond petroleum system requires extending our understanding …
The Impact Of Experiential Virtual Dinosaur Excavation Assignments On Exam Preparation And Performance Inâ An Introductory, University-Level Geology Course, Nicole Elizabeth Ortiz
The Impact Of Experiential Virtual Dinosaur Excavation Assignments On Exam Preparation And Performance Inâ An Introductory, University-Level Geology Course, Nicole Elizabeth Ortiz
Theses and Dissertations
Advocates assert that experiential/applicational learning facilitates deep understanding but there is a dearth of empirical research testing the effectiveness of experiential learning in university geology courses. Domack (1999) and Moecher (2004) document applicational assignments within geology courses. These evaluations, however, are based solely on instructor opinion and informal student comments. To evaluate the effectiveness of experiential assignments this study utilizes empirical data from control and test groups in each of two semesters of Geology 100, a general education course on dinosaurs. Control groups completed traditional research papers which were replaced by experiential assignments in the test groups. The first semester …
Trace: A Differentiable Approach To Line-Level Stroke Recovery For Offline Handwritten Text, Taylor Neil Archibald
Trace: A Differentiable Approach To Line-Level Stroke Recovery For Offline Handwritten Text, Taylor Neil Archibald
Theses and Dissertations
Stroke order and velocity are helpful features in the fields of signature verification, handwriting recognition, and handwriting synthesis. Recovering these features from offline handwritten text is a challenging and well-studied problem. We propose a new model called TRACE (Trajectory Recovery by an Adaptively-trained Convolutional Encoder). TRACE is a differentiable approach using a convolutional recurrent neural network (CRNN) to infer temporal stroke information from long lines of offline handwritten text with many characters. TRACE is perhaps the first system to be trained end-to-end on entire lines of text of arbitrary width and does not require the use of dynamic exemplars. Moreover, …

The Aluminum was modeled with Lorentz model and the Alumina was modeled using Cody-Lorentz.
The Integration Of Iterative Convergent Photogrammetric Models And Uav View And Path Planning Algorithms Into The Aerial Inspection Practices In Areas With Aerial Hazards, Michael James Freeman
The Integration Of Iterative Convergent Photogrammetric Models And Uav View And Path Planning Algorithms Into The Aerial Inspection Practices In Areas With Aerial Hazards, Michael James Freeman
Theses and Dissertations
Small unmanned aerial vehicles (sUAV) can produce valuable data for inspections, topography, mapping, and 3D modeling of structures. Used by multiple industries, sUAV can help inspect and study geographic and structural sites. Typically, the sUAV and camera specifications require optimal conditions with known geography and fly pre-determined flight paths. However, if the environment changes, new undetectable aerial hazards may intersect new flight paths. This makes it difficult to construct autonomous flight path missions that are safe in post-hazard areas where the flight paths are based on previously built models or previously known terrain details. The goal of this research is …
Photoacoustic Co2 Detection In Biomass Cookstove Applications, Jacob Matthew Thomas
Photoacoustic Co2 Detection In Biomass Cookstove Applications, Jacob Matthew Thomas
Theses and Dissertations
Billions of people use biomass burning cookstoves in their homes and suffer serious health repercussions. Additionally, global warming is exacerbated by cookstove emissions containing greenhouse gases and particulate matter. Improved cookstoves (ICSs) mitigate the problem, but accurate and affordable emission gas measurements, particularly of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Carbon Monoxide (CO), are required in order to confidently declare ICSs cleaner burning than traditional cookstoves. The aim of this research is to assess the suitability of photoacoustic (PA) CO2 detection technology for cookstove emissions monitoring. The designs of several longitudinally resonant, photoacoustic, LED, CO2 sensors of varying levels of functionality are …

Lithofacies, Sequence Stratigraphy, And Sedimentology Of Desert Creek Platform, Slope, And Basin Carbonates, Southern Margin Of The Aneth Complex, Middle Pennsylvanian, Paradox Basin, Utah, Christopher M. Perfili
Theses and Dissertations
The Aneth Field in the Paradox Basin (SE Utah) has produced nearly 500 MMbbls of oil from phylloid-algal and oolitic carbonate reservoirs of the lower and upper Desert Creek (Paradox Formation, Middle Pennsylvanian) sequences, respectively. The oil resides in a 150 to 200 foot-thick isolated carbonate platform located in a distal ramp setting on the southwest margin of the Paradox Basin. The horseshoe-shaped platform is roughly 12 miles in diameter with an aerial extent of approximately 144 square miles. Evaluation of the platform-to-basin transition on the leeward (southern) margin of the Aneth Platform, the focus of this study, was made …
Movements And Space-Use Of Female Greater Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus Urophasianus) During Nesting And Breeding Seasons, Drew W. Retherford
Movements And Space-Use Of Female Greater Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus Urophasianus) During Nesting And Breeding Seasons, Drew W. Retherford
Theses and Dissertations
Greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) are a species of conservation concern throughout their range including the state of Idaho. Little is known about the size of areas used by female sage-grouse during the breeding and nesting seasons, fidelity of females to those areas, or fidelity of female sage-grouse to specific leks or nest sites. The recent miniaturization of global positioning system (GPS) transmitting devices allows for a more thorough analysis of this behavior. We placed GPS transmitters on 234 female sage-grouse in Idaho, USA, from 2015 to 2019. We monitored 145 nest attempts, 15 of which occurred in consecutive years, from …
Exploration Into The Use Of A Software Defined Radio As A Low-Cost Radar Front-End, Andrew Michael Monk
Exploration Into The Use Of A Software Defined Radio As A Low-Cost Radar Front-End, Andrew Michael Monk
Theses and Dissertations
Inspection methods for satellites post-launch are currently expensive and/or dangerous. To address this, BYU, in conjunction with NASA, is designing a series of small satellites called CubeSATs. These small satellites are designed to be launched from a satellite and to visually inspect the launching body. The current satellite revision passively tumbles through space and is appropriately named the passive inspection cube satellite (PICS). The next revision actively maintains translation and rotation relative to the launching satellite and is named the translation, rotation inspection cube satellite (TRICS). One of the necessary sensors aboard this next revision is the means to detect …
An Ulk1-Independent Mechanism Of Atg9a Regulation In Basal Autophagy, Ashari Rashmi Kannangara
An Ulk1-Independent Mechanism Of Atg9a Regulation In Basal Autophagy, Ashari Rashmi Kannangara
Theses and Dissertations
Macroautophagy (hereafter referred to as autophagy) is the bulk degradation and recycling of cytoplasmic materials by forming a double membrane vesicle called the autophagosome. Autophagosome formation is regulated by the coordinated action of a set of proteins. ATG9A is the only multispanning transmembrane protein that plays an essential role in autophagosome formation, yet its function is largely elusive. Previous studies have shown that the C-terminus of ATG9A plays an important role in regulating its trafficking and proper function in autophagy. In line with that idea, we previously identified an AMPK- and ULK1- mediated phosphorylation on the C terminus of ATG9A …
Formulating A Crowd State Prediction Problem For Application To Crowd Control, Brooks A. Butler
Formulating A Crowd State Prediction Problem For Application To Crowd Control, Brooks A. Butler
Theses and Dissertations
This project considers a new application of crowd control, namely, keeping the public safe during large scale demonstrations. This problem is difficult for a variety of reasons, including limited access to informative sensing and effective actuation mechanisms, as well as limited understanding of crowd psychology and dynamics. This project takes a first step towards solving this problem by formulating a crowd state prediction problem in consideration of recent work involving crowd behavior identification, crowd movement modeling, and crowd psychology modeling. We build a non-linear crowd behavior model incorporating components of personality modeling, human emotion modeling, group opinion dynamics, and group …
Writing Standards-Based Lesson Plans To Standards For Technological And Engineering Literacy, Scott Bartholomew, Thomas Loveland, Vanessa Santana
Writing Standards-Based Lesson Plans To Standards For Technological And Engineering Literacy, Scott Bartholomew, Thomas Loveland, Vanessa Santana
Faculty Publications
While written lesson plans may seem like a lot of work, with little purpose or benefit to new teachers, a well-written lesson plan is quite valuable for many reasons. The process of writing lesson plans at the beginning of one’s teaching career can be very time-consuming (Arnett-Hartwick and Cannon, 2019); however, the development of sequenced lessons that result in effective learning must be organized and articulate, not done haphazardly. Designing a lesson through a written document can help a teacher see the pattern, flow, and implications of a lesson and how it will help all students; this can be especially …

Mechanisms Of Asymmetric Membrane Formation In Nonsolvent-Induced Phase Separation, Jan Ulric Garcia, Tatsuhiro Iwama, Eva Y. Chan, Douglas R. Tree, Kris T. Delaney, Glenn H. Fredrickson
Faculty Publications
We report the first simulations of nonsolvent-induced phase separation (NIPS) that predict membrane microstructures with graded asymmetric pore size distribution. In NIPS, a polymer solution film is immersed in a nonsolvent bath, enriching the film in nonsolvent, and leading to phase separation that forms a solid polymer-rich membrane matrix and polymer-poor membrane pores. We demonstrate how mass-transfer-induced spinodal decomposition, thermal fluctuations, and glass-transition dynamics—implemented with mobility contrast between the polymer-rich and polymer-poor phases—are essential to the formation of asymmetric membrane microstructures. Specifically, we show that the competition between the propagation of the phase-separation and glass-transition fronts determines the degree of …

Cell factories converting bio-based precursors to chemicals present an attractive avenue to a sustainable economy, yet screening of genetically diverse strain libraries to identify the best-performing whole-cell biocatalysts is a low-throughput endeavor. For this reason, transcriptional biosensors attract attention as they allow the screening of vast libraries when used in combination with fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS). However, broad ligand specificity of transcriptional regulators (TRs) often prohibits the development of such ultra-high-throughput screens. Here, we solve the structure of the TR LysG of Corynebacterium glutamicum, which detects all three basic amino acids. Based on this information, we follow a semi-rational engineering …
Predicting Plans And Actions In Two-Player Repeated Games, Najma Mathema
Predicting Plans And Actions In Two-Player Repeated Games, Najma Mathema
Theses and Dissertations
Artificial intelligence (AI) agents will need to interact with both other AI agents and humans. One way to enable effective interaction is to create models of associates to help to predict the modeled agents' actions, plans, and intentions. If AI agents are able to predict what other agents in their environment will be doing in the future and can understand the intentions of these other agents, the AI agents can use these predictions in their planning, decision-making and assessing their own potential. Prior work [13, 14] introduced the S# algorithm, which is designed as a robust algorithm for many two-player …

Automatization Of Urban Drainage Modelling By Hybridising Domain Knowledge And Equation Discovery, Matej Radinja, Mateja Škerjanec, Sašo Džeroski, Ljupčo Todorovski
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Urban drainage modelling (UDM) is widely used to assist decision-making process for numerous challenges related to urban water cycle. The procedure of UDM is quite complex, consisting of uncertain parameter values and alternative process formulations. In this research, we propose an automated urban drainage modelling approach, with the aim of improving the model selection and model calibration procedure. To this end, the automated modelling tool ProBMoT was used, based on equation discovery to (a) find the most suitable mathematical model among multiple alternatives for describing the selected (environmental) processes and (b) to calibrate model parameters on the measured data. ProBMoT …
Exploratory Study Of Profitable Combinations Of Electricity And Materials From Urban Biowaste, Karel Keesman
Exploratory Study Of Profitable Combinations Of Electricity And Materials From Urban Biowaste, Karel Keesman
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Electricity can be generated by renewable resources, such and wind and solar radiation, but also from biomass. To avoid competition with food and feed, waste biomass can be used. An additional advantage of waste biomass is that it contributes both to the circular and biobased economy, in which biomass is converted to food/feed, biomaterials, biochemicals or bioenergy. Thus, the waste biomass used to generate electricity can also be used to make chemicals, materials or fuels. Amsterdam, the capital city of the Netherlands, has the ambition to become a leader in the circular economy and it has also set targets related …
On Using 'Emerging Interest' In Scientific Literature To Inform Chemical Risk Prioritisation, Jason Whyte
On Using 'Emerging Interest' In Scientific Literature To Inform Chemical Risk Prioritisation, Jason Whyte
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Modern industrial practices employ a large and diverse collection of chemicals. This can challenge regulators charged with environmental protection. Typically, insufficient data is available for risk assessments. Thus, chemicals may find widespread use until adequate evidence of adverse environmental effects prompts regulatory action. Globally, regulators have seen that such ‘reactive’ risk management has disadvantages. Recently in Australia (and elsewhere), relatively rapidly, certain unrestricted, longused perand polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) became subjects of concern, then regulation. Such events motivate us to support regulators’ ‘proactive’ risk management efforts. We aim to assist regulators in anticipating the emergence of potentially risky chemicals, enabling their …
Enhancing Biophysical Processes Reuse Across Multiple Crop Simulation Platforms Via Cyml Language And Transformation, Cyrille Ahmed Midingoyi
Enhancing Biophysical Processes Reuse Across Multiple Crop Simulation Platforms Via Cyml Language And Transformation, Cyrille Ahmed Midingoyi
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Process-based crop growth models are developed in different programming languages within different modelling platforms using specific design patterns and architectural constraints. Even when modular approaches and reuse techniques are proposed by these platforms, there is little exchange of crop growth model components between them despite theoretical and application interests. To facilitate crop growth model intercomparison and model components exchange, several leading groups in the field have joined to create the Agricultural Model Exchange Initiative (AMEI). Recently, AMEI proposed Crop2ML, a centralized framework of model component exchange and reuse. Crop2ML provides a modular and declarative approach to describe and exchange components …
Application Of Recurrent Neural Networks For Streamflow Prediction Across A Mix Urban Rural Coastal Drainage System, Sadegh Sadeghi Tabas
Application Of Recurrent Neural Networks For Streamflow Prediction Across A Mix Urban Rural Coastal Drainage System, Sadegh Sadeghi Tabas
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Surface flow models provide a comprehensive assessment of rainfall-runoff processes to understand how a catchment system responds to different environmental conditions. Although, many modelling systems including conceptual and distributed physical hydrological approaches provide a concise expression of flow path heterogeneity and limited system response function at the catchment scale. Recently, deep leaning methods have been proposed for empirical rainfall-runoff modelling and to complement existing hydrological models (both distributed physical and conceptual approaches), particularly in a catchment where data to support process-based model is limited. This study implemented a new and innovative Deep Learning (DL) modelling system to simulate daily streamflow …
Digitizing Farmers' Land Use Decisions - Interactive Whole Farm Optimization, Johannes Mossinger
Digitizing Farmers' Land Use Decisions - Interactive Whole Farm Optimization, Johannes Mossinger
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Smart and informed farm management and policy decisions are a key prerequisite for improving livelihoods of smallholder farmers worldwide. Climatic changes, volatile prices, policy shifts and technology innovations are some of the decision factors hinting at the complexity of challenges faced. Whole-farm mathematical programming has a long tradition in farm operations and agricultural economics research helping to understand and analyze complex implications of management decisions considering the full farm-household system. However, a technical and conceptual knowledge divide has prevented its widespread use in direct interaction with smallholder farmers so far, both in farm management and agricultural policy analysis. Although rapid …
Comprehensive Uncertainty Assessment In Modelling, Elicitation Of Stakeholder Preferences, And Decision Support, Peter Reichert
Comprehensive Uncertainty Assessment In Modelling, Elicitation Of Stakeholder Preferences, And Decision Support, Peter Reichert
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The current practice of uncertainty quantification in environmental decision support is in-complete by not covering all sources of uncertainty. In particular, typically used parameterizations of value functions that quantify preferences of stakeholders are insufficiently flexible to describe stake-holder preferences, the uncertainty of stakeholder opinions and of aggregated “societal preferences” are usually not quantified, and the sensitivity regarding prior assumptions in modelling of the outcomes of decision alternatives as well as on elicited preferences is usually not investigated. In this presentation, the attempt will be made to demonstrate how uncertainty can be considered more comprehensively in environmental decision support. In particular, …
Digital Support For Farm Investment Decisions: Climate Change And Economies Of Size In Farm Mechanisation, Francisco A. Mendoza Tijerino
Digital Support For Farm Investment Decisions: Climate Change And Economies Of Size In Farm Mechanisation, Francisco A. Mendoza Tijerino
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Climatic change holds considerable challenges for farm management. On the one hand, climate change increases uncertainty about future trends and the inter-annual variability of farming conditions. On the other hand, economic pressure and climate mitigation efforts require farmers to be efficient economically as well as efficient in natural resource use. Strategic decisions, especially machinery investments, fix resources for a long time span and affect both the future capacity to adapt to environmental variability and the efficiency of resource use on-farm. Improving decision support tools to inform such strategic management decisions is demanded by both farmers and farm machinery suppliers. The …
Using Game Technology To Engage Citizens And Quantify The Public Acceptability Of Air Quality Interventions, Enda Hayes
Using Game Technology To Engage Citizens And Quantify The Public Acceptability Of Air Quality Interventions, Enda Hayes
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Ambient air pollution has as significant impact on public health and was responsible for more than 4.2 million premature deaths annually worldwide. It is within our cities where this public health impact is most acute as high population densities and elevated ambient pollution concentrations result in an increased risk of exposure. This health impact is further exacerbated as air pollution interacts with other social determinants of health creating a disproportionate risk and burden especially for vulnerable communities. Traditional approaches to public engagement on this issue has resulted in a general apathy among citizens as they cannot connect the scale of …
Incorporating Scenarios Of Value Change In Robust Decision Making Using Cross-Impact Balances, Tristan De Wildt
Incorporating Scenarios Of Value Change In Robust Decision Making Using Cross-Impact Balances, Tristan De Wildt
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
The aim of this work is to demonstrate how scenarios of value change can be incorporated in robust decision making. The deployment and operation of energy infrastructures frequently lead to protests from the public (Wüstenhagen et al., 2007). To address stakeholder concerns, approaches in ethics of technology such as Value Sensitive Design (Friedman et al., 2006) aim to embed values into technological designs. This is done through specification of design requirements and policy guidelines. A difficulty scarcely addressed by this literature is how to account for future value change (Van de Poel, 2018). Values to which designs need to comply …
