An Analysis Of The Speaking Style Of Heber C. Kimball: Mormon Leader, James Francis O'Connor
An Analysis Of The Speaking Style Of Heber C. Kimball: Mormon Leader, James Francis O'Connor
Theses and Dissertations
The primary function of this thesis was to determine, through the analysis of three randomly selected speeches, the speaking style of Heber C. Kimball. The selected speeches were presented in three different utah locations, and they covered a span of nine years (1856-65). All three speeches were presented to a Mormon audience and were religious in nature.
Seven elements of style have been used for the analysis of the three speeches. They are: accuracy, clarity, propriety, economy, force, striking quality, and liveliness. It was determined that President Kimball's speaking style was weak in the areas of accuracy and clarity. In …

Parental Control Of Children's Television: An Exploration Of The Relationship Between Control And Family Home Evening, Marion Wixom Mccardell
Theses and Dissertations
This study was designed to examine the relationship between a secular behavior—television control—and a religious one—Family Home Evening. The findings show that there is a relationship, with those having favorable attitudes toward Family Home Evening and those who hold casual FHE's being most inclined to exercise positive control over their children's television viewing.

Guest Workers As An "Automatic Stabilizer" Of Cyclical Unemployment In Switzerland, W. E. Kuhn
Guest Workers As An "Automatic Stabilizer" Of Cyclical Unemployment In Switzerland, W. E. Kuhn
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
In the early 1970's, in excess of 5 percent of the total population of France, Germany, Britain, and Switzerland were immigrants, The extreme case was Switzerland, where one person in six had come from a foreign country. Between them, the four mentioned countries had nearly 10 million immigrants; this accounts for more than nine-tenths of the West European total of nearly 11 million. This estimate may be on the low side; Feurer indicates that in 1972 some 8 million guest workers lived in Europe who together with their families comprised about 13 million people, contributing some Sfr. 80 billion (about …

"Der Glarner": Abraham Blumer Of Zion Reformed Church, Allentown, Professor William T. Parsons
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
Up in the Lechadaal Pennsylvania Dutch Country, people tend to credit origins and you will often hear them say of virtues and of foibles, "he came by it honestly." They mean that children inherit characteristics, or that a new generation often mirrors the traits of its predecessor. So it was, surely, with Abraham Blumer, Ministre du Sancte Evangile, heir to family traditions of leadership in local church, business and civic affairs.

Robert H. Billigmeier, Americans from Germany : A Study in Cultural Diversity. Belmont, California: Wadsworth Publishing Co., 1974. 189 pp. $5.00.
Historians interested in immigration to the territory of the United States or in the ethnic dimension of American social history will welcome this synthesis of the story of immigrants from German-speaking lands. It describes "in both general and specific terms the complex social experience of one of America's most significant cultural and population components" (Preface).
The Lectures On Faith: An Authorship Study, Alan J. Phipps
The Lectures On Faith: An Authorship Study, Alan J. Phipps
Theses and Dissertations
The Lectures on Faith, important since 1834 to the theology of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, are of disputed authorship. In an attempt to ascribe the lectures to their true author from five possible candidates, Joseph Smith, Sidney Rigdon, Parley P. Pratt, Oliver Cowdery, and W. W. Phelps, the use of 738 function and other words in the lectures was compared with the use of the same words in known writings of the candidates.
The study showed that Sidney Rigdon's use of function words corresponded very closely with that in Lectures One and Seven, and fairly well …

En este artículo se busca verificar la vitalidad (o la caducidad) de los indigenismos léxicos que recoge Pedro Henríquez Ureña en su obra El español en Santo Domingo. Se intenta contribuir así al establecimiento de la nómina pasiva de esos indigenismos en la norma de cada estrato sociocultural en la ciudad de Santiago de los Caballeros.

The Japanese Translation Of The Book Of Mormon: A Study In The Theory And Practice Of Translation, Jiro Numano
The Japanese Translation Of The Book Of Mormon: A Study In The Theory And Practice Of Translation, Jiro Numano
Theses and Dissertations
English and Japanese are very different from each other in tems of their structures. And consequently no one would call the present translation of the Japanese Book of Mormon a low rank-bound translation.
However, a substantial amount of grammatical categories of English such as number, redundant subject for Japanese, pronominal expression, and the passive voice which is not used so often in Japanese as in English, are introduced in the translation. The improper placement of subject, verb and object also serves as a cause of foreign tones. Thus the present translation has more factors of Formal-Equivalence translation than those of …

A Study Of The Influence Of The Mormon Church On The Catawba Indians Of South Carolina 1882-1975, Jerry D. Lee
A Study Of The Influence Of The Mormon Church On The Catawba Indians Of South Carolina 1882-1975, Jerry D. Lee
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study is to discuss the origin and development of the Southern States Mission of the Mormon Church as it relates to the Catawba Indians of York County. The primary purpose of this relationship was to teach the Indian people the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. It is also the purpose of this study to show the significance of the change in the Catawba society resulting from this mission. From the time the first Mormon missionaries came into contact with the Catawbas, their lives have been deeply influenced by the teachings of the LDS Church. Every aspect …
Relf Kieser, Max Frisch: Das Literarische Tagebuch: Book Review, John F. Holley
Relf Kieser, Max Frisch: Das Literarische Tagebuch: Book Review, John F. Holley
Swiss American Historical Society Newsletter
The significance of Max Frisch's Diaries as literature is not dependent on a formal satisfaction of structural norms: it is not a art that strives for the perfection of a traditional model, but rather an attempt to move through a linguistic game ("ein linguistisches Spiel") toweard ther boundries of the expressible - toward that point at which, as Rolf Kieser puts it, the reader recognizes the significance of the white spaces between the words ("das Weisse zwischen den Worten"). In his book Max Frisch: Das literarische Tagebuch Professor Kieser bring calls " diaristisch," to the fore and, in a examination …
