A Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of San Juan Red Ware, Robert Jacob Bischoff
A Spatial And Temporal Analysis Of San Juan Red Ware, Robert Jacob Bischoff
Theses and Dissertations
San Juan Red Ware was widely distributed throughout the Four Corners region of the U.S. Southwest between about AD 750 and 1100. Prior research indicates this ware is a marker of identity and was likely associated with feasting and other communal activities. A study of the distribution of this ware indicates that it was traded widely, but with significant variation in relative quantity between sites. This variation is likely caused by unequal access to this ware due either to a lack of access to the necessary exchange networks or by a conscious decision to not participate in the exchange of …
Similarities And Difference In The Neural Processing Of Speech And Song In Religious Music, Brett Pielstick
Similarities And Difference In The Neural Processing Of Speech And Song In Religious Music, Brett Pielstick
Undergraduate Honors Theses
An fMRI study was performed to see the differences in the neurological processing between spoken and sung language in religious music. Students at Brigham Young University, who are members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, were exposed to alternating blocks of spoken and sung lyrics of religious and non-religious songs. There was no significant activation when contrasting speech and song, but there was significant activation in the right middle temporal gyrus and the posterior cingulate gyrus when listening to spoken and sung religious lyrics, suggesting an emotional reaction to religious stimuli. Contrasting spoken stimuli for both religious …

Teaching Computational Thinking And Coding Education Basics To Early Childhood Educators, Enoch Hunsaker
Instructional Psychology and Technology Graduate Student Projects
The purpose of this project was to design and develop training, assessment, and credentials to help inservice and preservice teachers connected to Brigham Young University (BYU) to become competent in teaching computational thinking (CT) and coding in their classrooms. In accordance with the needs and desires of the stakeholders, the assessments for the project took the form of open badges, and the training consisted of corresponding tutorials to assist individuals earning those badges. The badges, tutorials, and some related resources were compiled onto the Tech with Kids website (https://iptedtec.wixsite.com/techwithkids) to make them accessible for all target learners.
An Analysis Of The Joseph Smith Translation Of 1 Corinthians 15:40, Jared T. Parker, Todd B. Parker
An Analysis Of The Joseph Smith Translation Of 1 Corinthians 15:40, Jared T. Parker, Todd B. Parker
Religious Educator: Perspectives on the Restored Gospel
The Joseph Smith Translation ( JST) of 1 Corinthians 15:40 is significant for the Latter-day Saint (LDS) community because the King James Version (KJV) is closely associated with the LDS doctrine of three degrees of glory in the Resurrection. Of particular interest is that JST 1 Corinthians 15:40 adds two phrases to the KJV,1 in bold below:
Backward Transfer Of Apology Strategies From Japanese To English: Do English L1 Speakers Use Japanese-Style Apologies When Speaking English?, Candice April Flowers
Backward Transfer Of Apology Strategies From Japanese To English: Do English L1 Speakers Use Japanese-Style Apologies When Speaking English?, Candice April Flowers
Theses and Dissertations
When learning a second language, there are elements of a learner's native language that can transfer and are exhibited during production in the second language. This can extend not only to the way things are said but even to gestures that are language- and speech-act-specific. However, there is evidence that the same can occur backwards, that is to say that elements of a second language can be exhibited during production of one's native language (Pavlenko and Jarvis, 2002). This study focuses on English L1 learners of Japanese who have spent significant time both in country and learning the language to …
י הנני (Here Am I, Send Me): Person And Proximity In Literary Prophecy, Matthew S. Kershaw
י הנני (Here Am I, Send Me): Person And Proximity In Literary Prophecy, Matthew S. Kershaw
Theses and Dissertations
Prophecy is a poorly understood genre, commonly understood as literature primarily focused on mantic visions of future events. A more nuanced understanding of literary prophecy recognizes the limits of this view, as well as the diversity of genres within many prophetic texts. These two views present one problem: forced readings of prophecy as a kind of reverse history on the one end and the problem of generic diversity on the other, resist an easy scheme of classification for prophetic literature. This study elucidates some of the problematic assumptions of primarily Biblical prophecy, and suggests that contemporary genre theory"“which views genre …
El Futuro Ya Está Aquí: A Comparative Analysis Of Punk In Spain And Mexico, Rex Richard Wilkins
El Futuro Ya Está Aquí: A Comparative Analysis Of Punk In Spain And Mexico, Rex Richard Wilkins
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines the punk genre's evolution into commercial mainstream music in Spain and Mexico. It looks at how this evolution altered both the aesthetic and gesture of the genre. This evolution can be seen by examining four bands that followed similar musical and commercial trajectories. In Spain, Kaka de Luxe and Radio Futura; in Mexico, Size and Ritmo Peligroso. Since punk music's gesture is both visceral and political, various methods of suppressing or containing the punk gesture arise. For both Spain and Mexico, containing the punk gesture was a matter of government censorship in the early years of punk. …

U.S. Racial/Ethnic/Cultural Groups In Counseling Psychology Literature: A Content Analysis, Jared Mark Hawkins
U.S. Racial/Ethnic/Cultural Groups In Counseling Psychology Literature: A Content Analysis, Jared Mark Hawkins
Theses and Dissertations
Research on ethnic/racial/cultural (REC) groups can contribute to reducing mental health risks and treatment disparities among REC minorities. Content analysis is a way to measure the quantity and quality of REC-focused research within a given field. For this study, counseling psychology was chosen for its leadership in multicultural and social justice issues. Three journals (Journal of Counseling Psychology, The Counseling Psychologist, and Journal of Counseling & Development) were coded for several variables, including REC-minority focus, article topic, geographic location of sample, urban/rural setting of sample, and inclusion of ethnic identity and acculturation measures. The results showed that 490 (21.3%) of …

Moving From Eco-Forecasts To Eco-Projections, Brian W. Miller, Jeffrey T. Morisette, Gregor W. Schuurman, Jamie K. Reaser
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Ecological models can provide estimates of future conditions that are useful for decision-making, including long-term planning and resource prioritization. However, these models often rely on assumptions about ecological relationships and trajectories, forcings (e.g., biophysical conditions), and management approaches that may not be explicitly considered. To make assumptions more transparent, disciplines such as economics, demographics, climatology, and national intelligence make a fairly clear and consistent distinction between “forecasts” and “projections”. Forecasts are typically more near-term and rely on extending existing relationships and trends to estimate the most likely future conditions; whereas projections evaluate conditions under multiple scenarios that are based on …
Variable Selection For Improving Predictions Of Hydrological Events, Marina G. Erechtchoukova, Marina Zistler
Variable Selection For Improving Predictions Of Hydrological Events, Marina G. Erechtchoukova, Marina Zistler
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Application of supervised classification to short-term predictions of hydrological events rely on data routinely collected by Conservation Authorities with high frequencies on streams and their watersheds. It implies that the quality of predictions depends on location of monitoring stations and representativeness of data sets used in the analysis. Given that application of classification algorithms requires data transformation, an attempt was made to improve the performance of these algorithms by extending the set of variables of black box models which are supplied by stream and rain gauges and include their derivatives which may carry very important information as well. The original …

Data-Driven Hybrid Approach To Short-Term Predictions Of Hydrological Events, Marina G. Erechtchoukova Prof., Peter A. Khaiter Prof., Dennis Khaiter
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Application of supervised classification to short-term forecasting of hydrological events demonstrated that combining outputs of several individual learners into a final judgement improves the accuracy of predictions and creates more robust models. Given that predictions are generated as categorical values corresponding to a class label of a future hydrological event, the ensembles perform better when they incorporate black box models which disagree on the same subsets of data. To further extend the ‘diversity of opinions’ of ensemble members, black box models of a different type can be added to an ensemble of classifiers. Given that regression methods are aimed at …

Leisure centers are growing in popularity as health and physical fitness awareness is becoming an integral part of human society. Leisure centers consume more energy compared to most office buildings but are less studied in the area of non-residential energy consumption prediction. This work presents an energy consumption prediction effort for a leisure center using a class of two ANFIS based adaptive networks: ANFIS GP and ANFIS SC and multi-linear regression. Climatic, periodicity and energy use data collected over a period of eight months were pre-processed, normalized and split into training and testing sets before being presented to the adaptive …

An Innovative Approach Based On Recursive Clustering To Design Optimal Districts In Water Distribution Networks, Armando Di Nardo, Michele Di Natale, Carlo Giudicianni, Dino Musmarra, Giovanni Francesco Santonastaso
International Congress on Environmental Modelling and Software
Water Network Partitioning (WNP) in District Metered Areas (DMAs) is an effective management strategy for the Water Distribution Networks (WDNs), simplifying pressure control, water loss detection and protection from contamination. Nevertheless, the definition of permanent DMAs constitutes an arduous task, since, the closure of some pipes may worsen significantly the energy and the topological redundancy of the system. In recent years, several optimization procedures, relied on heuristic optimization methods, were focused on the optimal design of DMAs; they generally are based on the simultaneous insertion of gate valves in all boundary pipes defined in the clustering phase. Since these procedures …
Wrestling With Agency, Courtney B. Nordgran
Wrestling With Agency, Courtney B. Nordgran
BYU English Symposium
In the Book of Mormon, the word wrestle, a distinctive and aggressive verb, is found in only two places: Enos 1:2 and Alma 8:10. Using that word to discuss prayer is a bold statement about one’s relationship to God and points to other similarities between the chapters, such as analogous beginnings, strikingly similar diction, allo-repetition, and various parallelisms. These similarities suggest that Mormon borrowed the word “wrestle” from Enos’ autobiographical account to create a connection between the two messengers of God and their stories. That connection is strengthened by the similarities, while the varying conclusions and other subtle changes …
The "Cursed Self": Anxiety And Unspoken Curses In Richard Iii, Hannah White
The "Cursed Self": Anxiety And Unspoken Curses In Richard Iii, Hannah White
BYU English Symposium
As an important aspect of language and corresponding action, cursing comes up regularly in critical discussion of Richard III. The current discourse illustrates the ties between cursing and important topics of the Elizabethan era, especially women’s power and Christianity. Whatever the ties, critics understandably focus largely on how cursing as language impacts the play. Although these critics significantly illuminate several aspects of curses in Richard III, what consistently goes unconsidered is unspoken cursing and how it expands our understanding of curses and contributes to Richard’s personal and political downfall. These unspoken curses come into play in Richard III …

Henriette Renié An Enriched Perspective From Primary Sources, Clarissa Cashmore, David Day
Journal of Undergraduate Research
My ORCA project was a study of the French virtuoso harpist, composer, and pedagogue Henriette Renié. Renié’s archive collection is housed at BYU. There are over 9,000 items in her collection, including but not limited to spiritual diaries, letters from family and colleagues, concert programs, and newspaper clippings. My project was reading through and transcribing portions of hundreds of original letters and spiritual diary entries, translating what I chose to include in my finished product, and writing a roughly 10,000-word article to be submitted for publication.
Agency In Action: Exploring User Responses And Rhetorical Choices In Interactive Data Displays, Jacob D. Rawlins, Gregory D. Wilson, Kate Crane
Agency In Action: Exploring User Responses And Rhetorical Choices In Interactive Data Displays, Jacob D. Rawlins, Gregory D. Wilson, Kate Crane
Faculty Publications
n 2014, Rawlins and Wilson proposed a typology of agential interactions between users and designers of interactive data displays. This article tests that typology by studying 20 users working with three different types of interactive data displays and answering questions, which were coded by verb and actor and analyzed for themes. The authors show that rhetorical agency is marked by thoughts, actions, and language. Affordances by the designer open a shared rhetorical space where user and designer are coparticipants. As interactivity increases, participants see themselves as rhetorical agents in a community of rhetorical agents rather than as conduits of information.
The Effects Of Metacognitive Listening Strategy Instruction On Esl Learners' Listening Motivation, Corbin Kalanikiakahi Rivera
The Effects Of Metacognitive Listening Strategy Instruction On Esl Learners' Listening Motivation, Corbin Kalanikiakahi Rivera
Theses and Dissertations
Prior studies looking at the effects of listening strategy instruction on motivation have shown there to be a positive correlation between the two. However, the participants of these studies all shared a first language (L1) and were not enrolled in an intensive English program (IEP). This study aims to investigate the correlation between listening strategy instruction and listening motivation in an IEP classroom for students from different L1s. Listening motivation was recorded utilizing the English Listening Comprehension Motivation Scale (ELCMS) and strategy use was tracked with the Metacognitive Awareness Listening Questionnaire (MALQ). Pre- and post-test scores of 56 participants (control …
The Effect Of A Social Communication Intervention On The Correct Production Of Emotion Words In Children With Language Impairment, Annelise Luddington
The Effect Of A Social Communication Intervention On The Correct Production Of Emotion Words In Children With Language Impairment, Annelise Luddington
Theses and Dissertations
Children diagnosed with Language Impairment (LI) often have difficulty with aspects of social communication. This thesis evaluates the effects of a social communication intervention focused on facilitating the correct production of emotion words in four elementary school-aged children with LI. Researchers monitored changes from pretreatment baseline data, through the intervention, and ended with posttreatment follow-up data for the emotions happiness, surprise, fear, anger, sadness, and disgust. Based on baseline measures, emotion categories in which the child showed limited proficiency were targeted for the 20 intervention sessions. The emotions targeted were different for each child. Each intervention session contained a combination …
Poverty And Empowerment Discourse In Utah Dual Immersion Classrooms, Lauren Johnson
Poverty And Empowerment Discourse In Utah Dual Immersion Classrooms, Lauren Johnson
Undergraduate Honors Theses
This paper considers the discourse, or communication, that occurs in dual immersion programs in Utah. I take a sociocultural perspective to address the question of whether and how these programs are meeting the unique needs of the students enrolled in them. I consider two tasks frequently viewed in five consecutive days of filming: mirroring/repeated phrases and partner talk. Findings suggest that although they have promise, they often do not meet the intended aims of comprehension and language development. The findings also show that these tasks do little to empower participants. The conclusions and implications suggest that commonly accepted tasks in …
Esl Students' Reading Behaviors On Multiple-Choice Items At Differing Proficiency Levels: An Eye-Tracking Study, Juan M. Escalante Talavera
Esl Students' Reading Behaviors On Multiple-Choice Items At Differing Proficiency Levels: An Eye-Tracking Study, Juan M. Escalante Talavera
Theses and Dissertations
Theorists have been concerned with the overlap of reading and problem solving for at least a century (Thorndike 1917, 1973-1974; Sternberg & Frensch, 2014). Various reading models have been proposed including bottom-up and top-down reading processing (Goodman, 1972; Gough, 1972). In second language literature, theorists have further noted that reading consists of strategic, purposeful, and interactive processes (Grabe, 2009). In test taking situations, problem solving is important because it can compensate for students' language proficiencies. In spite of research showing the use of problem solving in reading, less is known about how learners actually read and problem solve in test-taking …

Spanish Language Learning And Supporting Strategies In Mixed Classrooms At The Secondary Level, Jorge Vasquez
Spanish Language Learning And Supporting Strategies In Mixed Classrooms At The Secondary Level, Jorge Vasquez
Theses and Dissertations
Students in the United States take language courses for various reasons. Many Spanish heritage language learners (HLLs) and the majority of second language learners (L2Ls) enroll in Spanish classes in the United States. Based on state demographics, sometimes immigrants from Spanish-speaking countries join HLLs and L2Ls in mixed-classrooms. Many times, these groups take classes together, even though their language abilities, motivations, and linguistic needs differ significantly. Such a learning setting presents challenges for them as well as for instructors. This study builds upon and reinforces findings from previous studies regarding teaching mixed-classes. Data were gathered from 41 students taking AP …
Differences In Gesticulation: A Mixed-Methods Approach To Gesture Differences Between First- And Second-Language Speech Output Among Advanced-Level Spanish/English Bilinguals, Dustin J. Hemsath
Theses and Dissertations
Hand gestures during speech lighten the speaker's cognitive load, provide lexical access, augment the precision of memory, and identify when a speaker is ready to learn a new skill (Abner, Cooperrider, Goldin-Meadow, 2015). Much of the research that has discovered these purposes of gesture have focused on gestures produced during speech in the speaker's first language. Many researchers use these findings to argue for the same cognitive benefits of gesture in the second language, though only little research of gesture and second language speech has been done. The present study sought to fill the gap between first and second language …
The Moral Realism Of Student Question-Asking In Classroom Practice, Susan Peterson Gong
The Moral Realism Of Student Question-Asking In Classroom Practice, Susan Peterson Gong
Theses and Dissertations
Question-asking has long been an integral part of human learning. In scholarly investigations over the past several decades, questions have been studied in terms of the answers they generate, their grammatical structure, their cognitive functions, their logical content, and their social dynamics. Studies of student classroom questioning have focused on science education and reading instruction particularly; they detail the reasons why students don't ask questions and explore a plethora of recommendations about teaching students how to question. This qualitative study addressed question-asking from a hermeneutic moral realist perspective, studying question-asking as it unfolded in the everyday practice of learning in …

Attitudes Of University Students In Castellón De La Plana Toward Valencian Catalan And Castilian, Jeannette Alicia Fuhriman
Theses and Dissertations
This study investigated language attitudes toward Valencian Catalan and Castilian among university affiliates in Castellón de la Plana, Spain. One hundred informants completed an online survey regarding attitudes toward and uses of Valencian and Castilian in various situations. The results were first analyzed globally, then again based on the independent variables of age, sex, and mother tongue. The findings suggest that overall, informants held positive attitudes toward Valencian and Castilian and believed that it was important that the local language be preserved and passed down to the next generation. University-aged participants, those whose first language was either Valencian or both …
The Effects Of Social Communication Intervention On Emotion Inferencing In Children With Developmental Language Disorder, Capri Annissa Seaberg
The Effects Of Social Communication Intervention On Emotion Inferencing In Children With Developmental Language Disorder, Capri Annissa Seaberg
Theses and Dissertations
Children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) often face problems in areas of social communication including negotiating with peers, entering ongoing interactions, and engaging in conflict resolution. A potential cause of these social communication difficulties is the decreased ability to make emotional inferences. This thesis investigates the effects of a social communication intervention on the ability of school-aged children with DLD to make inferences about emotions. Five children with DLD between the ages of 6;10 and 12;4 participated in a social communication intervention that highlighted principles of emotion understanding (recognizing emotions in facial expressions, inferring emotions with contextual information, and discussing …

"Laughter Is Part Of My War Effort": The Harmonizing And Humanizing Influences Of Laughter In Andrea Levy's Small Island, Jacob Holt Shumway
Theses and Dissertations
Most critical analyses of humor in postcolonial literary settings have focused on its power to critique and subvert dominant hegemonic systems in ways that tend to divide participants according to predictable dichotomies. Yet humor theorists have long recognized laughter's equivalent potential as a bonding mechanism. An examination of the rhetorical functions of humor in Andrea Levy'sSmall Islandreveals the extent to which these affiliative forms of humor can be successfully deployed across cultural divides within a migrant context, as well as the risks and limitations inherent to such an approach. Ultimately, the novel's gentle, inviting, and accessible humor provides the basis …
